I'm from NYC and I go to a Steak N Shake every time I come to the Midwest. This is a horrible chain, time means nothing to these workers. We ordered 4 simple specialty shakes at 10:00pm, it is now 10:46pm as I'm writing this review... And it's not like they are busy. I am a big fan of steaks and shake for probably close to 25 years now. There was one at Purdue and since college I have always enjoyed their burgers if I'm in the mood for fast food. This location is a little slower than most though. It also takes a while to get the order right when ordering but otherwise, the food has always been good. Improve your staff and training if you want more stars. read more

This restaurant is honestly just so disappointing. When you look at it from the outside, you'd think it'd be at least decent. But MY FRIEND, YOU ARE WRONG. Every single time I come here, it is the same thing. The waits at the drive-thru AND inside are insane. You will sit in the line for 30 min+ to receive cold food, every single time. The fries taste like cardboard- flavorless. Their staff is mostly rude, and impatient unlike their customers. If you work for any delivery food service, don't accept orders from here unless you want to waste 2 hours of your time. You will pull up to the drive thru window and they will tell you that they JUST got the order so you will have to park and wait for it, which will take forever. We walked in and the person did not say hi and just asked how many and was not friendly and had no smile at all , which she turned out to be our waitress as well named Angie. She just took our order and still not friendly and no smile. Placed a call -in, in Merrillville, In. Was told 10 min. go thru the drive thru, they tell me I have to come in because they don't take call-ins thru the drive-thru any more fine... We had the worst experience. Walking in no one greeted us then we waited 11 minutes to be seated. Then the server finally came over after nearly 15 minutes, she was an older lady with a limp. We ordered burgers and a shake, she said that the guy that make the shakes has left and we could not have any. Sitting there we noticed people at other tables were getting shakes that's when we asked about the other people. Her reply was she would go and ask him even though prior she said he had left. When the shakes finally came to the table she said she made then herself for us. Also the burgers we ordered were wrong and the fries didn't have the cajun seasoning or the cheese. The food here is very good. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars and not 5 is because the people who make the food behind the counter are super loud and ghetto. I understand they're trying to have fun but when you're working in front of customers, you should try to be professional. Live right down the street and frequently get a craving for a steakburger. When i choose steak n shake merrillville, i more often than not am vey dissatisfied. If they dont mess up on the burger, its the fries, or the sauces. And when there is nothing wrong with the order, it is usually made very sloppily or wrong. Go to Culvers! Stopped in with my boyfriend to get a frisco melt (I have been craving one ever since the Valparaiso location shut down). We ended up ordering the frisco with frisco on the side, a western BBQ burger without the fried and fresh onions, a large parm fry, and a large cherry limeade. After 25 minutes of waiting in the nearly empty resturant, we get our food. No drink. 10 minutes after the workers just stared at us, we finally got a small cherry limeade, which took 5 more minutes to get the large we paid for. I checked the bag in the car to find that we had 3 small fries, none of which were parm and we were charged for all 3, including the large parm we didnt get. No frisco either. So I went back in, had to wait another few minutes while the workers just stared at me to even get someone to help me. Finally, I got the parm fry (it was even warm, shocker!) Amd the frisco. Got to driving and my boyfriend discovers his burger is full of onions. 25 dollars for cold and wrong food, plus terribly slow and rude service. Drive thru service left a lot to be desired. The gentleman working the window had zero pride in his work as he handed be a Coke where the outside of the cup was covered in product. No napkins in the bag. No salt on the fries and no salt or ketchup in the bag. Will not return. read more

I've been to every Steak & Shake between Chicago and Indianapolis and most of them are pretty dumpy...especially in the bathrooms. However, this Steak & Shake is great! The staff was friendly. Took awhile and I mean awhile to receive ANY kind of service or even acknowledgement! I started off seating at the bar area...No acknowledgement! So I got up to be seated in the dinning area, then someone approached us to be seated. He was very joyful and singing (which was nice), but then stated, "Are you wanting to be seated at a booth or was I going to be seated at the bar, where I was sitting previously?" Wow...this means that you and most possibly others saw me sitting at the bar for service w/o ANY acknowledgement! Needless to say the server, Eric, was very courteous and served us well w/the water w/lemons and food orders. Eric also smiled a lot, which was very nice! My Double Cheese Burger was tasty, especially with the lovely amount of pickles that were placed on the burger...which gave each bite a nice crispy texture! The Thin Fries were fresh and salted perfectly, as well! At the end the young lady, with a grossly amount make-up on, just walked away from the cash register and told another person to take care of us while I reached for my phone which was to display my coupon. For a $3.99 meal which consists of a double cheeseburger and fries, this is a steal! The thin cut french fries are my favorite part of the meal. I always top it off with a strawberry milkshake which is by far the best milkshake on the planet! The burgers are thin cut pieces of beef which are loaded with flavor. I'd been here before and the service wasn't great. This time we walked in and were seated right away but we had a child with us & they didn't give us a children's menu. We think it might have been because it was a Sunday & kids eat free on Sundays. After waiting 10 mins. & no one had come to take out order, we loudly said we would wait 2 more mins. before leaving.
