The shakes are resonably priced as well as the kids meals are a real deal! Service was meh. The burgers remind me of my elementary lunchtime burgers. I was recently exposed to steak and shake a in south Austin and absolutely feel in love!! The menu, the service, and the price. I live on the north side of San Antonio so the only one was on the west side about 40 mins away. But I loved the experience at the Austin location so surely this other should be worth the drive...... Right???? RIGHT!?!? Never again will I venture to the San Antonio SnS. Like most others said, the food was cold, fries were actually the worst I've ever had, and the menu was horrible!! Tonight was my first time eating at this location and we had great service. The staff was super friendly while ordering, the food didn't take long and it was fresh. The one thing that I appreciated the most was the staff member who literally ran out in the rain to our car to give us the side of ranch they forgot to put in our bag. They even gave us an extra one! Update to 3 stars, mainly due to the limited menu. The seating in here is also fairly minimal. If you have a group, go to freddies. It is honestly about the same food. I do, however dig the parm/herb fries. So, after looking for the cheesy cheddar, bleu ribbon, and the wisconsin buttery here and not finding them, I finally settled with the jalapeno crunch burger, which is a good choice if you have never been here. The service was good, but it was also probably the "we just opened so we are going to give great service" service. I will keep going back since I do have some good coupons there. When they run out, I will probably start eating at freddies again, who honestly has better menu selections and desserts anyways. I think they should have just built a real steak n shake instead of just a halfway one. I still maintain that the shill 5 stars should be removed. As a kid who grew up eating Steak 'n Shake burgers, I was extremely excited to find San Antonio locations when I moved here earlier this year. I've eaten at the Alamo Ranch location about five or six times in the past two months. The food is as great tasting as I remember and the combo meals are very reasonably priced. The employees are very friendly and helpful. My only complaint is the service is so S-L-O-W. There has never been a visit where this location was busy (six other orders) in the restaurant. I have never waited less than 20 minutes to get my food; once I actually waited 30 minutes but that was because an over anxious employee marked my order as being completed even though it had not yet even hit the grill. Based upon my past experiences, the average wait time should be 10 minutes or less. Those experiences were in very busy restaurants with waitress services. This location has no waitress service. You order at the front like any other fast food place and wait to be notified by one of those flashing, buzzing devices. In those faster paced restaurants, there is usually only one person manning the grill...same here. In those faster paced restaurants, the person manning the grill places as many orders on the grill as there is room. At this location, I've never witness more than one or two orders on the grill at one time. It appears additional training is needed and perhaps more than just two or three employees at one time. The question is, how many customers must be subjected to the very slow service before they cease patronizing this location? As a kid who grew up on the taste of steakburgers, shoe string potatoes and ice cold Cokes, I haven't reached my tolerance level. However, it is coming soon. To the franchise owner, please wake up. You've got a potential gold mine but it's drying up fast. Make some personnel changes to improve the service before it's too late and you follow Carls Jr in the category of "What ever happened to..." read more

We got a grilled cheese kids meal as part of our order, but when looking at our receipt we realized they charged us separately for the sandwich and fries rather than the kids meal price - so we paid double for it. Understanding mistakes happen, we brought it to the cashier's attention, and he said he'd give us a refund when we got our food because there was a line behind us. He was clearly a little frazzled, so we agreed. When our food came, we waited in line to talk to him again, at which point he said he can't issue a refund and offered us a free drink... even though we just purchased drinks for our family. read more

Finally tried this place. It was pretty good, minus that the patties were a little on the saltier side. For the price and the burger it wasn't bad though. We didn't get to try the shakes but were tempted to. Maybe next time. They had a good flow of customers coming in to dine so that's always a good sign. A couple of employees were a little rude and unprofessional in my opinion, but most of them were great. They even provided us plastic forks and knives with are meal without us asking just in case we needed it. Much appreciated. I wish the fries were a little thicker. My husband really enjoyed his meal also and he didn't mind the size of the fries. Used to live in Orlando and basically lived off of this food so excited they built one here. The staff is always super nice!!! There's a blond girl who I believe is the manager and on multiple occasions has left a positive impression on my visit. And the past few times there's this younger guy who looks slightly island-ish. Lol he's super nice as well. I love the food but come back because service has been great so far. I do miss the original steak and shake menu with my 3.99 meal options. I've been here several times I always order the organic signature burger but they seem to have renamed it to all natural signature burger. I went during a Black Friday Lunch rush hour and despite how packed it was my food came out quick, hot and fresh. The service there is always friendly, the ingredients are always fresh, the organic signature burger is top quality Meat, juicy, and flavorful the fries are thin but still good and made from actual potatoes. They recently added a double meat and cheese with fries for less than $5 I thought it was great that Steak N Shake isn't going down without a fight with the new competitor In N Out around the corner. A typical Steak n Shake; the burgers our kids had, and what my fiancé and I had were delicious. And of course the milkshakes were super good. I had the nutella and I really recommend it! They're located in a weird spot though, it was hard to find. They should be near the Ross area where their sign is at, at the entrance there, but unfortunately they are at the opposite end where the USAA is. But you should go and have a steak burger with a shake. They're yummy, the place is clean, they're friendly, and they even serve beer (if you're in the mood). read more

Very disappointed in their limited menu. I grew up with steak n shakes and expected a full service restaurant, not this limited version. No baked beans, no salads, no chili mac. They will have a hard time against freddys, chesters, and whataburger if they don't introduce more food lines. Guess ill wait til I gr8 st back to Illinois.
