Oh no! What happened to the consistency of the Hokkaido soft serve? This place used to be SO good. The Hokkaido soft serve was rich, creamy, BUTTERY and just downright divine. My husband and I would go to mitsuwa just to get it and would frequently bring our out of towners here just for the Hokkaido soft serve. However, when we went today, we could immediately tell from the appearance that it seemed different. And unfortunately, taste wise, its gone completely downhill. It is no longer thick and creamy. It's bland and very icy. Reminds me of the cheap, free ayce soft serve you get for free at some bbq jpints. So disappointing. Hopefully, it's just an off day for the machine or something. But if it's a permanent change, we will no longer come back. read more

Originally my party and I went as they sent us a coupon to redeem. However, upon trying to type it in, it didn't work. And in asking a staff member, he explained that they've been trying to tell the company to stop sending out discounts as the store doesn't accept any. So that was a little disappointing. We just order a regular matcha ice cream and we felt that it was a little stronger in matcha in the past - not sure if recipe changed. read more

Soft Noodles on top was a bit too sweet but I did like the matcha soft serve very creamy & intense matcha taste. Service was quick especially on a weekend it was packed on this food court. Be sure to keep an eye out on the table where they put the orders that are done, they come out fast. read more

I love matcha soft serves and was excited that this was near where I was hanging out. However, the soft serve was disappointing as it did not have too strong of a matcha taste and the soft serve texture was not what I normally expect. It was about $7 or so for the soft serve. I came at the tail end of the night so maybe that was a factor. Don't think I would be coming back though. read more

I got the mochi ice cream and while the mochi was delicious, the quality of the matcha ice cream inside was pretty average. I did also get a strawberry matcha daifuku, which was enjoyable! The worker was very friendly. The place itself is in the Mitsuwa food court, so it's quite busy (depending on the time). I would need to come back to try more of the menu, which I am happy to do in the future. read more

This spot has the best matcha and mochi I've had since Japan -- no exaggeration. The mochi is unbelievably soft, light, and just melts perfectly with every bite. And the matcha!!! So good. It's rich, earthy, and actually tastes authentic, the kind that immediately transports you back to a quiet café in Kyoto. Their mochi ice cream is a must, their matcha green tea is flawless, and the Mont Blanc ice cream is straight-up dreamy. I really wanted to like Matcha Ren (located near the entrance of Mitsuwa Marketplace's food court), but the experience was disappointing overall -- especially given the high prices. I should had "consulted" with recent Yelp reviews so I could lower my expectations. :((( First off, the ordering process felt impersonal. There were staff available (not busy with other orders), yet I still had to use a self-serve kiosk since I had a question if there's a cone upgrade. When there's no crowd why not just take the order directly? I ordered the Hokkaido milk sesame soft serve, and it fell short. It wasn't creamy at all, and they were very stingy with the black sesame topping (see photo). The sesame was more of artificial dip-coating NOT grounded paste. The coating only covers the top with nothing at the bottom so the remaining portion was literally vanilla. For $7, the portion was small and definitely not worth the price. The one saving grace was the friendly server who handed me the drink -- they were kind and polite. But unfortunately, good service alone couldn't make up for the underwhelming soft serve and overpriced for small portions. I very rarely regret trying desserts so this is the first. Probably not worth coming back. read more

I went here today and saw the poster of the Sakura stuff. I decided to buy the Sakura and the flower on top almost tastes like medicine. But the strawberry and red bean were delicious. Located inside the mitsuwa market, Matcha Ren is poppin!! I went for the sole reason of trying out the very instagram worthy matcha noodles which are actually made out of red beans! Soft serve was amazing too, with full matcha flavor. Even my not-so-matcha-fan bf was turned into a matcha fiend after trying this! Definitely recommend. read more

They are fast, overpriced, and quality is not really worth the price in my opinion. We tried a chocolate filled mochi with strawberry and Hokkaido milk soft serve. The Hokkaido milk soft serve was rich and creamy, but not worth the price. The mochi was okay. Overall, I'd come back only for convenience if I wanted dessert after having a meal at the delicious food court. read more

It's located right in the middle of the bustling food court, so there's plenty of communal seating available. A long line had already formed, which made it clear this spot is popular. I ordered the Matcha Mont Blanc and the Matcha Soft Serve Shake. The shake was refreshing, and the matcha soft serve was especially creamy. When they opened the store, there used to be a long line, but line has died down. So I gave a shot to their matcha mochi crape, and that was very disappointing. I was excited when she started preparing my crape right after order, so I expected it warm, but the crape was somehow very cold when I was handed. She also handed crape in the box, not the "cone style" which was inconvenient as a quick snack. It was a torture to finish it...no right texture; cold, mushy, tangy (cause it's matcha) and saggy. I also felt like it was overpriced, as it was $11.50 with tip...will not recommend anyone this place for crapes. read more

It is located inside Mitsuwa. There is a self order tablet that takes your order. There is only one person working so even though it is just ice cream the wait can be a bit long. I got the matcha and milk swirl for $6.90. The milk flavor was very yummy. It was rich and complemented the swirl really well. However I did not enjoy the matcha. It was grainy and I have had much better matcha ice cream before. This is a good spot for a late night snack since they stay open fairly late but it is not a place I would go out of my way to return to. read more

Lots of matcha dessert options, but I always come here for the Hokkaido Milk. I love anything Hokkaido milk and I'm glad I don't have to travel across the earth to get something similar. I believe they also use Hokkaido milk for their matcha so it will taste slightly different from the matcha you are accustomed to. read more

On a Saturday afternoon, it's not too bad of a wait anymore. It used to be very crowded and busy when they first opened, but now, it's better of a wait. They also changed it to a self order kiosk. The only confusing thing is the pickup is also where you order, so it might get a little squished and confusing. Got their Matcha Mont Blanc Soft Serve with the matcha and Hokkaido milk swirl. - Matcha Mont Blanc: Getting it, it looks great. You can choose the flavor of soft serve (I got the matcha/Hokkaido milk swirl), not sure if there's a charge though. The soft serve is a nice consistency, creamy, and not strongly matcha, but it's not bad. This is what people originally stopped by for when they opened. If this peaks your interest, I'd say it's not a bad choice. Overall, it's a good dessert spot for when you're in the store and want ice cream that's convenient. I think that for the size and quality that this is, it's quite on the pricier side. Might be a bit of a wait if they're understaffed, but when I went, it was not too bad (10 mins max). I don't think that this would be a place I'd go out of my way to go to though. read more

Ordered the parfait and I liked half of it - the matcha, fruit, and cream were the best part. Hidden in the cup were some pieces of mochi and the other half of the cup was the jelly. The jelly had no flavor and felt like a filler, so I'm taking a couple stars off my review. I probably would order something different next time but am glad I tried it. read more

I've had quite a few matcha soft serve and this one is not on my top favorites. The does have a nice thick and creamy texture which is really good, but the flavor is just straight matcha. Slightly bitter (which I'm okay with) but not sweet at all. I like my ice cream to be a little sweet, this was just straight up match tea, so it didn't taste like soft serve or dessert at this point. Worth a try if you don't like sweets. I just like my matcha soft serve to have a good matcha taste and a good "ice cream"/soft serve flavor. I have been meaning to try Matcha Ren for such a long time. I live closer to their pop up in downtown, but I found myself to be in the Costa Mesa area yesterday and I immediately thought to finally try out this spot. First off, I'd like to say that this spot is inside the Mitsuwa grocery store. Some people may be confused about that. I love that is inside though! There's so many seating areas and they even have a bar wrapped around the little pop up. I got the Montblanc Matcha Softserve and it was the creamiest matcha I've ever had in my entire life!!!! It literally made my day yesterday and I'm so glad I got to try this spot. They also had these delicious looking crepes that I wanted to so bad, but definitely the next time I come, I need to try them! read more

I highly recommend the Hojicha Hokkaido milk soft serve! The roasted tea flavored drizzle goes so well with Hokkaido milk soft serve. The Strawberry matcha crepe was also yummy. The sweetness levels of both are perfect since the flavors advertised do come through. The wait time wasn't bad when I came in the afternoon, but it's definitely crowded since it's in the middle of the food court side of Mitsuwa. Parking could be a challenge as well. Trust the reviews on this one! Ordered 2 desserts to share and we were not impressed with either. The items we planned to get were sold out (we were told the machine was broken). Every item is way over priced and serving size is small. This matcha spot is located in the food court area of Mitsuwa Marketplace. Location is great, but that was about it. Pictures on the screen when ordering should be how an item is served. My friend and I were sharing these desserts and if a crepe shows as served on a plate, that is what we expect. Instead, it was rolled up and handed to one of us. Luckily they had a to go box we were able to use to unwrap the crepe and cut it up. Overall, taste was lacking. Very light in flavor except strong, grainy and bitter matcha of the matcha mont blanc. Service was average and took less than 5 minutes to receive our order. read more

The strawberry pretzel salad tasted like strawberry cheesecake, which was right up my alley. And if you love cinnamon, you have to get the cinnamon snickerdoodle. It is the perfect amount of sweet and tastes just like a snickerdoodle cookie. I also appreciate the good amount of mix ins for both flavors.

Place is easy to find right off 17th Street. You really can't miss it with that big sign. And the building is definitely unique as well so you shouldn't have any problem finding it Inside you can either choose to go digital and and skip talking to a real person. I'm old school, I actually like engaging with people. So I went to the counter. I ordered the rib sandwich without looking, and was a little shocked by the total. The sandwich itself is 15 bucks, I ordered a small fry which was $4.50, and a small drink which was $4. With a 15% tip my total came out to $28. Definitely a little shell-shocked by that. Now let's talk about the sandwich. It came to the table and at first glance it looked very small. When I picked it up there was a very generous portion of rib meat inside like a big chunk of rib meat. Huge pickles and a lot of sauce. It was a great sandwich. Do not get me wrong, what I ordered again? Maybe. They don't really have a meal deal that includes fries and a drink so it's sort of all a la carte. Now let's talk about the taste. The fries were perfectly cooked, and the sandwich itself was a solid 10. That being said, I would definitely feel more comfortable paying $12 for this sandwich, as I think 15 is a little exuberant. And you don't really get that many fries for $4.50. I can't imagine what the meal deal would have been, but I'm sure people would absolutely balk at that price. I would have given it a five-star review, but that is way too much for that sandwich. As delicious as it was, I just don't feel right spending that much for a sandwich. If it could be reworked, and the price dropped down I would be all in in a heartbeat. Bottom line? If you've been wanting to try it, I say go ahead. Just be warned that you could be unpleasantly surprised unless you know what the prices are you're getting into.

They had only been open for an hour and are already closed, even though store hours said they're open. So my wife and kids and I waited as she walked in and out, not trying to acknowledge us. Super weird experience really bad customer service. We've been coming all the time and this is the first time we've ever experienced this.

I finally got to try the Matcha Mont Blanc at Matcha Ren, and it was absolutely worth it! The dessert was beautifully crafted, with delicate chestnut puree on top and a rich matcha flavor that wasn't too bitter or too sweet--just perfectly balanced. The texture was so light and creamy, and every bite felt like a real treat. The only downside is that this place is always packed, and the lines can get long, especially on weekends. It was definitely overcrowded, but honestly, after tasting the dessert, I can see why--it's that good! If you're a matcha lover and don't mind waiting a bit, this spot is a must-visit. It is located right in the middle of the facility. In regards to the wafers, they are called Petites Grafres from Japan. They come in a couple of sizes. Each size is packaged in an aluminum canister, and the canister is wrapped in decorated paper. Very classy. Now these things are cheap, but they are unique. The wafers are thin and very fresh. In the middle of the fresh wafer, you will find a thin layer of either vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry. You can get twelve individually wrapped packages containing three wafers each for $18. I also enjoy the Gaufrier L'espoir wafers. These wafers are thicker and covered in chocolate. Inside, you will find overlapping layers of vanilla and wafer. This is a great snack with a cup of great tea or coffee. You can get twelve pieces for $18. I can't wait to go back to the market place and get some more. The last batch only lasted a day. I should also mention they give you a free sample with each purchase!

Currently, their guava cheesecake is very yummy. A split scoop costs $6.75 and they are decent sized scoops. Service here is hit or miss. Sometimes you get a pleasant worker and other times you'll get someone who is merely there doing a job and can't even manage to crack a smile. I really can care less though because the ice cream is just so good and makes up for it. They do let you sample. Indoor only has standing tables but if you walk outside the store there are plenty of cute places to sit and enjoy your ice cream within The Lab.

I was warmly greeted as I walked in and looked over the unique flavors; I think there were 14 or so. I decided on two scoops of two different flavors: Madagascar Vanilla and S'mores. I found a table to sit down and dove into the ice cream. Admittedly, Madagascar Vanilla was probably the most boring choice I could have made, but the bold vanilla flavor was delicious. The S'mores was exactly what you'd expect: chocolate ice cream with bits of chocolate, marshmallow, and graham cracker throughout. The vanilla was more dense than most ice creams I've had, yet fresh and smooth. The S'mores was definitely more creamy and yummy. I'd rate this ice cream 4.5 rounded up.

The chocolate one tasted more like an overly sweet chocolate milk with very little matcha flavor, while the mango and matcha completely not combined well. For almost $17 for two drinks, I expected much better quality. I couldn't even finish the drinks and ended up throwing both of them away. If you're stopping by because of the Snoopy collaboration, the drinks are definitely photogenic. But if you're looking for good matcha, I personally don't think this place is worth it.

It may be a little bold to say, as we have eaten so many tasty things thus far, but it's in no small part because I've yet to find a bingsoo spot as good as them in the Bay Area! Not to mention the fact that the warm weather down gives me that much more of a reason (read: excuse) to keep coming back! Compared to the one in Costa Mesa, this Heybings is seems to be a bit smaller and the parking situation here isn't quite as easy (the parking lot has a lower level, but it can still fill up during peak hours). However, for whatever reason, this one feels a bit warmer and brighter (and just as cozy). As for the menu, it has all of the same delicious treats to offer - a terrific collection of their signature bingsoo flavors, including both their classic and seasonal offerings, mochi and liege waffles, coffees, and specialty lattes and drinks. The one thing I don't recall seeing listed that I remember from before is matcha, but I can't say I was looking for it either. -- MELON LIME BREEZE - Honeydew Base, Fresh Melons, Lime Zest, Condensed Milk, and Vanilla Ice Cream This is one of their specialty flavors that they rotate in, but they need to make this one of their regulars because it is SO GOOD! Between the melon base and fruit, plus the lime zest, this tasted so refreshing. Plus, I LOVED the creaminess from the vanilla ice cream. DELICIOUS! -- MANGO PARADISE - Milk Base, Housemade Mango Puree, Fresh Mango, Coconut Flakes, Condensed Milk, and Vanilla Ice Cream Not as amazing as the Melon Lime Breeze, but no less delicious. The taste of mango in this was really strong and, combined with the vanilla ice cream, condensed milk, and coconut flakes, kind of reminded me of Mango Sticky Rice (without the rice). -- MATCHA STRAWBERRY - Matcha Base, Housemade Strawberry Puree, Fresh Strawberries, Condensed Milk, and Matcha Ice Cream You could argue this is a little "basic", but there's a reason why this is a classic sort of combination. The Strawberries and the puree weren't overly sweet and balanced nicely with the taste of the matcha (flavorful with just a slight bit of that earthy flavor). Beyond the bingsoo, the other awesome thing about this place has been the service. While I do think it's a little better at their location in Costa Mesa, the workers have always been friendly and get orders out fairly quickly. Really, the only "knock" is that they don't come around to clear off tales as fast, which can be problematic when seating gets scarce (mostly at nights and on weekends). Of course, it would be nice if customers bussed their own trays/dishes when they're done and brought it to the little window/shelf at the back, but that's not exactly something that can be (nor should be) relied on either. Considering how much I've enjoyed our visits to this location just as much as their spot in Costa Mesa and how I rounded that down from the same FOUR AND A HALF STARS, it seems only fair that I round up for this one. Although, truth be told, I love Heybings so much, I will take them however I can have them, regardless of whichever of their locations I need to go to!

Ordered the Large Mango Paradise ($14.50), Single Strawberry Delight ($8.50), and Single Black Sesame ($8.75). All three were super refreshing and came with a generous amount of toppings. I honestly couldn't pick a favorite because they were all delicious, especially on a warm summer afternoon. The bingsu was light, refreshing, and perfect for sharing. Disposable paper cups and utensils are available by the register for self-service, which is convenient if you're sharing your bingsu. There is parking directly in front of the restaurant shared with the other businesses but it does tend to fill up. Underground parking is also available and is shaded. Overall, another great Heybings experience!

I've been coming here for months, and it is easily my favorite matcha place of all time. Not only is the ambience of the tea house amazing in itself being outdoors with beautiful greenery, fountain, incense, and soothing/calming music... the tea itself is unmatched in taste, preparation, and intentionality. I love Chafinity's mission of honoring traditional Japanese matcha preparation, as well as also serving sencha and other loose leaf teas. They do not compromise on their values whatsoever to hop on current drink trends... they serve delicious hot matcha lattes with high quality matcha from Kagoshima, Japan and have a close relationship with the farmers who harvest the tea. My go-tos are the hot hojicha and hot matcha lattes served unsweetened with their delicious homemade walnut milk. Not only do their lattes honor the true, authentic flavor of the teas, but the walnut milk in itself is delicious and naturally sweetened with dates and is unlike any other nut milks I've ever tasted. I also am a regular customer of their premium Gokoro matcha powder which I prepare at home myself. This matcha is honestly the best matcha I've tasted compared to other matchas I've tried all over California, and even in New York (I'm a self-proclaimed matcha snob and have very high standards for matcha flavor!). Not to mention to mention the amazing businesses they collaborate with that prepare their mochi and wagashi (Japanese sweets)! I am a big fan of their strawberry daifuku (which I always order with my drink), created by Hanaichi Mochi, and also love trying the gorgeous seasonal Wagashi creations made by WaSweets. If you want to drink delicious traditional Japanese matcha (while also honoring the farmers who have worked so hard to cultivate the tea), I cannot recommend Chafinity enough!!
