I'm going to give credit where it's due. Stepdad's on Freeport. Finally tried the 1924 burger last night. (Added bacon) Immediately hit top 5 Sacramento burgers in my opinion. They told me that business is still a little slow some nights and that's wild to me, especially in a neighborhood still mourning the loss of Pangea. (RIP) Anyway, fries were excellent too making this spot a "must try" for any burger enthusiasts. read more

Not a bad spot for happy hour. This wasn't on my radar but a friend visiting from Hong Kong was suggested this by her friend. Parking was challenging. Keep that in mind. It was a bit quiet when we arrived but it definitely picked up. Navigating the space was a bit challenging. Small hallways, that lead into different rooms. One side has a bar, the other has small booths and tables. They even have an outdoor patio. We ordered the happy hour Brussels sprouts, Freeport fries, burger (comes with fries) and ordered the turkey club sandwich. Brussels sprouts were devoured quickly. Your standard. Nothing really unique or anything to rave about. Still amazing. Freeport fries were uniquely their take on what seemed to be Animal Style fries from In n Out. It had the thousand island style sauce but it had the fresh red onions and pickles. Interesting. I would ask for the sauce/toppings on the side. It would be great control the amount. East LP Bacon Burger was my favorite. The ingredients you can tell were fresh, the meat was perfectly medium rare, each bite had the crispy onions, bacon and bbq sauce. I did the fries into the extra sauce from the Freeport fries. We also ordered the turkey club sandwich with a salad. Sadly no picture. It was a massive portion. Great for sharing. Nice joint. Our family decided to start out our day celebrating a family member's birthday by having Sunday brunch at Stepdad's. That turned out to be a pretty good idea, especially since it was during FIFA World Cup play. Stepdad's had food offerings for everyone in our party, from ages 4 to 74. There was french toast and chicken with waffles for the young ones, along with bacon, eggs, and juice. The "adult" selections ranged from smoked salmon toast, breakfast sandwiches and breakfast burgers. There were specialty FIFA themed cocktails as well as Bloody Marys and a variety of beers. The kiddos were pleased with their orders. The wagu breakfast burger was pretty good and the fries were crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. Unfortunately, the salmon toast left a lot to be desired. The toast seemed stale and soggy, the salmon was very salty, and the capers were left off. Maybe on a less busy day everything may have been perfect. They did a good job of preparing a great ambiance for World Cup. We just wish they had taken that same amount of time preparing the food. read more

I so want to give thos place a 5 star but unfortunately I can't this round. The food was amazing and very good the steak sandwich was delicious and cooked perfectly. The waitress we had Kay T was also great she was the only waitress working but her service was still on point I loved the way the team worked together to make sure she wasn't over stressed.. the only bad point was made a reservation for one of the tall tables arrived bit early had to wait because the party that was their didn't seem to know that when you're done eating you don't sit and talk for 2hrs in a busy restaurant on a Friday night with empty glasses. We got stuck at a small wobbly table under the fan not good. But when a booth inside opened up I asked to be moved they moved us no issues will be trying it again next time I'm sure they will get that 5th star read more

We just stopped here for drinks at the bar, so no food. What a difference from the old "Dad's", this place is much more upscale. My old fashioned was really good, one of the better ones I've had in Sac. Also, the staff was super friendly, we had a great conversation with one of the bartenders. Prices are average. I can't speak for the food (sorry!), but the drinks and bar are great! read more

I departed feeling quite disappointed, as I had high expectations due to my acquaintance with the owner and my previous experience working at his other restaurant. I had hoped he would uphold the same high standards that were instilled in us at this new establishment. Although we were a walk-in group of five adults and five children, it was a Wednesday night, and we requested to be seated outside, where we were the only patrons. Upon stepping outside, my initial impression was that the hostess had not taken the time to wipe down the table, which was wet from the misters in the outdoor seating area. Thus, my first impression was already somewhat shaky. Our server greeted us approximately five minutes after our arrival; however, considering the restaurant was not busy and we were the only ones on the patio, I understood that she might not have realized she had been assigned to our section. I was quite surprised that, despite having children aged four to nine, when the waters were brought to the table, the staff did not inquire if a cup with a lid, such as a to-go cup or coffee cup, would be more suitable, especially for the four-year-old. The drinks arrived fairly quickly, and we ordered two glasses of wine before placing our dinner order. I appreciated that the server was able to split the check, which is often not feasible for larger parties, and we were grateful for that. However, when our food was ordered and subsequently delivered, it was not done in a timely manner. One member of our party received her burger well before the rest of the food arrived, and the children's meals were the last to come out. In my experience as a server and in the hospitality industry, it is essential to prioritize the children by ensuring they receive their meals first and offering water cups with lids if available. Additionally, the steak on my salad was cut excessively thick, making it difficult for me to eat, as steak on salads is typically sliced thinner. My husband also ordered a salad and requested avocado to be added, which was not, yet he was still charged for it. We chose not to raise the issue at that moment as we did not want to be perceived as difficult customers. Additionally, we asked for the children's burger to consist solely of meat and cheese, but sauce was added, which led to my child refusing to eat it. We did not bring this to the server's attention because by the time she returned to our table, half of our party had already finished their meals. Unfortunately, the food did not meet my expectations. Having previously worked at another restaurant owned by the same proprietor, I know the quality of their food to be excellent; however, I was left feeling quite disappointed this time. The soft-serve ice cream was already melting off the cone before it even reached our table, making it difficult to enjoy. Furthermore, we were celebrating a birthday and had informed the staff beforehand, yet instead of bringing out the ice cream with a lit candle, they simply handed us a candle and said, "Here's a candle if you want it," without providing a lighter. Overall, I must say that the venue is beautiful and I appreciate the design, but I will not be returning for a meal due to my significant disappointment. read more

My husband took me here to try it and it was terrific! Started with espresso martinis and a cinnamon roll. Then I had the burger and my husband had the burrito. Both were excellent! Fries were nice and crispy and the bacon was so good!!! Burrito had half chorizo and half bacon and he added avocado. Mmmmmmm! Service was great and all the staff were very friendly. Oh my goodness, Dad's got a glow up! Stepdad's is now a charming and warm MCM dream with an adorable dining room, cozy bar and outdoor patio. We came on a glorious Saturday and sat on the patio for brunch. I had the chorizo scotch egg which was lovely. Jammy yolk, tasty chorizo, black beans and two delicious tortillas. Stepdad's...is your cool dad! FOOD: I have been here three times and each time my belly leaves happy! I have had the burger twice and LOVE it. The flavors and quality of ingredients are a perfect match. This is for sure a high end burger. I also had the chicken sandwich which has the perfect layer of flavors. They also make a great Shirley temple. SERVICE: Each time we have been here we have always received the best customer service! Food arrives timely and we were checked in several times. They were also kind to our kids. AMBIANCE: Showstopper!! I love love the mid century modern vibe. You can tell the owners put a lot of thought into the vibe of this place. And to top is all off they have the cutest patio that is large. KID FRIENDLY? Yes, I have been here twice with my kids. They have a great kids menu. This place definitely has potential to be amazing but it needs quite a bit of improvement before it can unlock its full potential. The space is gorgeous. The wood paneling, the old school green furniture and the different touches create a cozy atmosphere. The service here is on the border of bad and good. There was no host to seat us when we arrived and so we just aimlessly stood there for a few minutes before we got someone's attention. When we were finally seated we stared at the menu so long that we had grown bored of discussing what we were going to order by the time our server showed up to take our order. After the food started to arrive they did pay a little more attention to us but I'm on the fence whether it was enough to redeem the lack of service at the start of the meal. On the fence is how I felt about this place thought out the night There were moments of magic which makes me believe they can unlock their full potential with a few changes. The cheese curds and the deviled eggs were the highlight of the evening. The dill in the ranch sauce reminded me of the dipping sauce at La-Bou. The wedge salad was a total miss. To take such a classic dish and add pumpkin seeds and squash is unnecessary. To me the beauty of a wedge salad is its simplicity. The burger was average and the soft serve with Granny Smith apple, caramel and what amounted to a Madeline cookie just felt too lazy for this menu. It's easy to add a burger to a menu, but when you are competing with In-N-Out, Willie's, and Shake Shack then you have to be confident the burger on your menu can stand up to those places. This one did not. It might sound harsh, but we started the meal with such great bites like the dill sauce and cheese curds that when the rest of the night didn't meet that level of excellence we couldn't help but be disappointed. I hope they can make a few tweaks because this has the potential to be a wonderful little spot. read more

We finally made it back after visiting the second day they opened, and everything we experienced was either on point or improved from back then. They added sound baffling to the main indoor dining area, which made a huge difference in noise volume (although it's still not quiet of course). Everyone was just as friendly and attentive as before. The blue cheese burger was absolutely delicious. It was a fun homage to blue cheese-crusted burgers that Dad's Kitchen used to serve, but IMO it was a step up. Everything at Stepdad's has such strong flavors, and this burger was no exception. It was sour, and savory, and tart, and as always the house-made pickles did a lot of the carrying as they do on pretty much every dish they're included in. I also don't know why, but the fries here are incredibly good. Other than being maybe a bit more salty than usual, I can't put my finger on why, but damn they are satisfying. I tried two new drinks (Ducktail and Fall Ball) and both were unique and tasty. My wife had the blackened salmon bowl and very much enjoyed it. But just as last time, the star of the night was the soft serve. I'm pretty sure I said it in my original review, but Stepdad's has the best chocolate soft-serve ice cream i've ever had by a mile. I was looking at local. Well reviewed restaurants near my hotel and decided to pick stepdads because it had a lot of appealing pictures and good reviews and they delivered to the hotel through DoorDash. I ordered the 1924 burger and the crispy brussels sprouts both were OK. I feel conflicted cause I imagine if I were in the restaurant it would've been better, but I had to wait for the delivery driver to bring it at at least 12 minutes after it was ready. I love the fries. The burger was only OK and the crispy Brussel sprouts were not at all crispy. They had a coating of cheese on the top that had melted so I picked through the dish for the brussels sprouts as best as I could. It came with Shinto peppers and/ or some other kind of peppers, which were delicious and gave a little heat. I'm thinking to walk over for dinner to try their chorizo scotch eggs. read more

They have a handful of different ice cream treats here, which is exciting! This normally includes Mr. Whippy (sounds a lot like a 99 from the menu description to me, a heavenly treat for a different visit I think!) but they were all out. I ordered the strawberries and cream instead. With real strawberry slices, yum yum. It was excellent. We love Dad's, but Step Dad's deserve a chance too. Went here for lunch the first time--they definitely renovated. Everyone sat outside but we opted for indoor seating. We were the only one seated inside...it was super quiet, the kitchen was nearby so staff were accessible and plenty. We order an appetizer, salad and entree to share. The Chili Mac was creamy and cheesy, love the rigatoni but wish the chili was spicer or at least more plentiful. I forgot we got "chili" mac. Overall, good mac. We love a good beet salad and it had all the great ingredients of one: farro, blue cheese, argula, red and yellow beets, candy walnuts but this was supposed to be a Beet and Pear Salad, it was just lacking the pear. A few pieces of shaved pears doesn't make this a beet and pear salad--just call it a beet salad. Tasted really good though. The entree has to be the down fall, the fish may look golden and crispy but the batter thick, wet and mushy on the inside--I gave up and just ate fish on the inside. Fries were alright. We'll be back to try other things, Step Dad's can't replace Dad's but he's trying to establish a place in our hearts and that's all that matter. Hahaha. read more

I stopped at Stepdad's yesterday for lunch with a friend. I had the Caesar Salad with grilled chicken, and she had the 1924 Burger. Except for the chicken which was pretty average, my salad was simply awful. It appears as though Stepdad's uses hearts of romaine rather than the whole head. Not a single leaf look like it was more than the palest of green/yellow from the core. The croutons were dry but didn't taste as though they'd been toasted or seasoned. The over abundance of chopped egg was frightening, and the capers (?) or oil-cured olives (?) just seemed out of place. All of this might have been overlooked had the dressing delivered. It did not. It had absolutely no flavor. How can that be? By definition Caesar dressing is nothing but a flavor symphony! No acid (lemon, vinegar), no salt (Worcestershire, anchovy, Parmesan), no pepper, no GARLIC. I bemoaned the lack of flavor as I grudgingly ate my salad, to which my friend replied "Well all of the salt ended up on", not in, "the middle of my burger". ‍ read more

Let me start by saying I love that this neighborhood restaurant was reinvented and reopened. I live down the street and it's great to have a place to walk to. I think with some time and tweaking, this place will earn more stars. I truly love the remodel. It looks great and feels great. Service is friendly and attentive. The cocktails were fabulous- great old fashioned. Why the 3 stars....unfortunately the food. It was fine, just not flavorful. Both our salads were fresh, but bland. The large pretzel was good, but the English cheddar sauce was also bland. I have no doubt with the current owners, that this place will only get better. Let me start by saying the food was great! I've been wanting to come for so long and finally swung by and got the maple fried chicken sandwich. It was incredible! Thick chicken, crispy fried, perfect bun, great slaw and pickles and sauce. Service was good, came during happy hour it was pretty early. Kind of an interesting setup. There's the bar which is open then the side room tucked away behind big booths. I will say that it ain't cheap. Chicken sandwich was $21 and came with fries which wasn't horrible, but I also got the happy hour fries which I thought would be big for $10 but it came in a little bowl the same size as the kids Mac n cheese. I'd love to come back and try the burger but I think I'll have to work a few overtime shifts in order to afford it. The stepdad lite beer was great though! $5 on happy hour too! I brought my two girls with me and they were fairly well behaved. There were two other tables in our way out and both had kids there. Make no mistake, this is NOT a dog friendly restaurant. They have an outdoor patio, but I assume the entrance is through the restaurant only. I approached the front desk and requested an outdoor table because we had our 9 year old 10 pound dog with us after a day of traveling. The gentleman at the host stand looked at me like I was a Martian and we were told they do not allow dogs in the restaurant. I am not blaming the gentleman who was the host. Yelp has the restaurant listed as "allowing pets". We went to another restaurant that allowed pets outside on their patio and had a delicious meal. Honestly the menu for stepdads's is full of sandwiches and burgers not quite sure how a neighborhood place survives cutting out the neighbors. read more

We have had the shortribs for dine in and they were fantastic. Had a beautiful, glistening sauce over the top of the beef. Potatoes were smooth, buttery and lump free. However- we ordered take out and this is what we got. DRY, dry, dry beef - no sauce to be found. Potatoes with golf ball size lumps. The vegetables were thrown in and rather tasteless. We sat on the porch and had an amazing lunch. Fish and chips was piping hot and crispy, both tartar and ketchup were very flavorful. The chicken sandwich was the star, crunch buttermilk coating cooked to perfection with dad's mayo, pickles and apple slaw made the perfect sandwich to make you want more. The small Cesar salad with avacados was the perfect size. Don't forget the dessert, Carmel apple strudel which soft serve ice cream and a Dutch chocolate cone. Came in on Sunday looking for brunch/breakfast we were seated quickly into a booth seat. The ambiance is kitschy 60/70ish with darker tones but looks to have a nice outdoor seating area. We glanced over the menu which was interesting and different. My husband chose the Chorizo scotch egg rancheros and I the power bowl. Pleasantly surprised at the depth of flavors and texture in my quinoa salad power bowl had me loving every bite. My husband's Chorizo choice was just as amazing. The portions were generous, but the fish was not crispy in the least. It was like eating fish in dough. There was little to no seasoning going on. Let's start out with the positive! Stepdad's has an amazing staff. They are friendly, fast, helpful and attentive. The place is charming and on the minimalist side. It is clean with clean bathrooms. We sat at a "bar nook" and still had great conversation and privacy with the service of a table. They have a lot of fun drinks and N/A options too. The food was also great! We tried the Deviled eggs and I like that they don't do anything crazy to them but the Dijon mustard is a nice tangy addition. We also had the Brussel sprouts and they were fantastic. Again, not getting fancy with crazy ingredients. Just really great roasted and seasoned little guys. My main dish was the salmon bowl. The salmon was cooked perfectly! The mint yogurt sounded like maybe it wasn't needed with the lemon vinaigrette already dressing the dish but it was such a cool flavor with the salmon. Everything tasted so fresh. The first reason I can't give Stepdad's a 5 is while I loved this salmon bowl, it really should be listed as a salad. It had dressing like a salad and I forgot quinoa was even listed as an ingredient. It was a great piece of salmon and a lot of arugala. Just not what I expected ordering a bowl. The second reason is parking. There is very little and street parking in this neighborhood is clearly discouraged by the occupants. I never understand why people open food establishments in neighborhoods that aren't very business friendly. And there are quite a few in a two or so block area. It gives a vibe that the only people who are welcome live close and that's kind of a bummer. I still say check it out! read more
