Checked out Stepdads this past week. Was not impressed. I know they are just getting started.. but the food was not great. Our table had fish and chips that left a lot to be desired. The fish was undercooked and the fries are bland. The portion is not worth the asking price... and the boujee amount of condiments was a joke as they don't provide enough. My wife had the burger and enjoyed... just felt the fries were boring and bland. I am truly hoping the food improves and the menu grows once they land on some favorites. The menu is very limited as they start out, which is to be expected. Parking is still a nightmare, and the ambiance and atmosphere feel fresh, but not fun. The patio is nice and has misters which makes the Sacramento Nights a little more bearable. On a plus... the service was friendly and attentive. Had to ask for silverware and salt and pepper, as well as sugar... which was a downside when trying to enjoy dinner. Rooting for this place to be a hit, but lots to work on before a more solid review. read more

We were weekly regulars at Dad's on Freeport. Chiming in for all of the other neighbors who are wondering what the new space is like. The headline: We'll be back! The notes: It's lovely -- so pretty & well laid out and family friendly with a great menu and the food is all delicious. The staff are all top shelf & professional. It's also 100% not Dad's! And that's ok. They have a full bar with gorgeous cocktails, now! AND they are currently open til 10! No hovering at the bar. No chalkboard & the garage door stays closed. The hard note: the lighting in the bar is just not right -- too dim & the bar lamps end up glaring. (This is fixable, I know a local shop that can help.) The bar vibe is less sports bar (they do still have the game on) & neighborhood chat space, but that might evolve. They do have these darling alcoves in the bar for 2-top dates! I'm so glad to have this back as a restaurant in the neighborhood. We hope to see you there, that was always the fun of the spot -- we always saw friends & neighbors there! read more

As others have suggested, the neighborhood restaurant is a treasure to be coveted. It's a rare bird in suburban Saramento. I'd like Pangea and Hop Garden and Cafe Dantorels to sustain and thrive. When I walk past my driveway-parked car on my way to eat I grin with glee. Never cared too much for the food at the Original Dad's. This one has potential. I think sincerely the burger is the best one in town. I've ordered it each of the three times I've been. That's their signature. It's not some great bargain, in honesty. Drinks are good. The Strauss Family Creamery softserve has recently been called out by brand name in the revised menu. Ambience is nice, save for the front room that housed a pinball machine at the old restaurant. I hope for all of our sakes they make it. We should do whatever we can to make it so. read more

I love that this restaurant is located in Land Park, and the menu looked absolutely fantastic! I was genuinely excited to try several items and had high hopes for a great dining experience. Unfortunately, the front dining area really detracted from the evening. I was seated up front, and it was a very unpleasant experience. Three separate tables were squeezed in together, right in the middle of foot traffic -- people walking in and out, waiting for tables, or standing around staring in our direction. It felt more like a chaotic lobby than a dining space. I waited 25 minutes to be seated, only to be placed in what felt like an overflow area with zero ambiance. Meanwhile, guests who arrived after me were seated in the back, which was clearly more relaxed and inviting. When I asked to be moved, I was told I'd have to wait all over again -- so we left, and sadly, no one seemed to care. I really do want to come back, but I hope you'll consider redesigning that front area. It would work much better as a waiting space or standing bar -- not a place to enjoy a special meal. read more

Was very excited to try Stepdads and are thrilled a neighborhood spot is back open. The place was packed and even though it's a casual atmosphere, they ask that you make a reservation. We were able to get in at the bar without a wait though. Drinks were great--specifically the Old Cuban. The bartenders were all very nice and took good care of us while we were there. Three star rating for the food. Chickpea smash burger wasn't cooked enough, very soggy in the middle. Tasted like the bun wasn't grilled. Bland all around. Simple salad was decent. Most items are very expensive for the quality of food being served. Bill for two was over one hundred dollars for simple bar fare. Hoping with some menu adjustments this place will become a favorite spot. Will give it another try, specifically for the Old Cuban and the stellar service. read more

We used to love Dad's before they closed. Based on the reviews, I was concerned about going here. Honestly, I really don't know what these people are talking about. Food and service was fantastic. Too cold to sit outside, but the hostess was accommodating and found us an inside table quickly. Server was friendly and checked on us several times. Two of us got the breakfast burger. It was so good. Very flavorful. You know how you get a burger that's sloppy and falls all over? This was not that. Perfect sized burger, and toppings that fit inside the bun. And everything was fresh. Wife got a Cobb salad. Presentation was beautiful and everything was fresh and good. Looks like we found a place in town to get a Cobb salad. Root beer that was recommended by the server and it was really good. We will be going back for sure. read more

First visit for wife and I. No wait and found a DP parking space right in front. Seated immediately by a pleasant hostess. Limited dinner menu with a happy hour menu. We selected the fried chicken sliders, east land park burger, deviled eggs and the Freeport fries. All the food was prepared well and was very tasty. The cheese sauce on the Freeport fries were too spicy for my wife. She ate my fries that came with the burger. After our sliders and burgers, wife ordered the soft serve ice cream. Our server, Anna, was very nice. The assistant ensured that our water glasses were always full and cleared dishes when necessary. Only complaint, the dining room is very noisy. Poor acoustics. I wish they served soup or chili during the cold months of winter. All in all, this is a nice place for a casual dinner and we'll be back. read more

We just stopped by, and weren't sure exactly what we were going to do... Valerie came over, and was an absolutely amazing server, giving us options of appetizers, happy hour, or a full on menu. There were lots of different beverage choices as well, and even some great ones on the happy hour menu. We sat out on the patio, which was perfect, it was warm, and super cozy... We wound up ordering a bit of 'a mixed bag', and everything was amazing. The portions were huge, we couldn't even finish what we got... We would go back in a hot second, and would definitely ask for Valerie. When pricing on the menu is so off and then taste is below average, I Just can't get on board. Chicken tenders ($18?!) are $1 less than a wagyu blend burger yet are only 2 pieces of chicken...and then the fish and chips are $24 but only 2 average sized pieces of fish, chili's is a better value at that point. They are super picky about where you seat or maybe they reserve tables for VIP. Not sure. , regardless we could not seat where we wanted to even though it was the same size table. Aside from that, we were super happy with our meal and the restaurant. A total upgrade from where it used to be. read more

was very excited for this restaurant opening up down the street from me. Have been for all the themed brunches, regular brunch and dinner. I also think the happy hour is a great deal , grab a beer watch a game and relax. The reason for my low star review is the overall quality of the food and service I've experienced. The food is always bland , like constantly flavorless. I ate my way through the menu and now whenever I go in I get a salad or the pretzel . Everything else is just underwhelming. Especially for the price point. Now the service is another thing. Seeing servers giggle and gossiping instead of maintaining tables. The busser always seems overwhelmed and I still see dirty tables with plates and trash on them every time I go here. I saw a RAT on the patio three times. Long story short. This is a great place to come to drink and watch sports. Not the place to come and have a proper meal. read more

Like most Land Park natives, we were devastated by the closure of Dad's. Such an institution! However, Stepdad's is a very worthy replacement. The interior facelift is top notch: open and warm. The dining area where we sat was inviting, and the bar area looked adorable. The exterior patio speaks for itself. We were growing increasingly excited about the food as we sat down. We noticed another table with deviled eggs, and ordered them for ourselves. Absolutely fantastic! We both had to try the burger, which didn't disappoint either. I don't think I've ever eaten a softer burger bun. Melted along with the pattie in each bite. The kick of the sauces was a joy. Service was quite attentive. Overall, a great experience. I sat right at the bar for 10 minutes and no one gave me a menu or came over to me at all. Both bartenders just kept serving the people that had already been there. So I had to leave. Why compare to Dad's, well when your in the exact same spot and slightly change the name it is to be expected. We had a large group. Dad fans for a birthday party. We were shocked to see one burger, one salad, one this one that. They were horrible. What a rip off! Went to Stepdad's with my family twice since their opening and am planning on this being a regular spot for us. The food was delicious and the service was on point. The atmosphere is exactly what I want for a local neighborhood spot. We got a little bit of everything. Like many reviewers on here we were weekly customers at Dad's and couldn't have been more excited when Stepdads opened. Unfortunately, it left a lot to be desired. While the remodel is beautiful, the food and drinks were a pain point. We had a party of 8 people and our server was amazing and promptly greeted us and took our drink order. When she returned with the drinks, over half were incorrect and had to be sent back. Our server apologized and quickly fixed the situation, but surprising that the bar sent out the wrong items. The way the wine is priced out on the menu is also confusing. We thought we had ordered a bottle of wine, however they serve the wine in carafes so you aren't getting the whole bottle. I ordered the Chickpea Smash burger which was mushy and bitter. Others in my party had the pasta which they said was good but needed more seasoning and the Waygu burger, which they said they would order again. Given the price for some of these items, it was disappointing. Overall, the service was great but the food was not my favorite. I don't think this will be our weekly spot, but I do hope they work out the kinks and stick around in the neighborhood. read more

The Land Parker is, by nature, a gentleman--one who enjoys the finer things in life, but insists upon obtaining them at a modest cost. Unlike his East Sac counterpart, who swims in a sea of abundance, the Land Parker is left to wander his own, humbler realm, ever hopeful when a new purveyor of spirits dares set up shop. Enter Stepdad's--formerly known simply as Dad's--a reincarnation born from the ashes of a well-regarded beer bar, laid low by that great plague of our times, the coronavirus. But Stepdad's, as the name implies, is no longer playing by the same paternal rules. This new patriarch brings the hard stuff--and with it, a twinkle of rebellion. Upon arrival, I was met by a gracious staff and promptly served--always a good omen. I took my seat at the bar and surveyed the kingdom: a pleasing array of bottles, varied and well-chosen. As a whiskey drinker, I am often disappointed by the uninspired shelf featuring a lone Basil Hayden, offered with the smug pride of a place that believes it has done enough. Not so here. Stepdad's shows creativity in its selections--a welcome sign of intent. But alas, creativity is no excuse for assuming I have New Money. A standard $45 bottle of whiskey served at $18 to $20 a pour--with the pour being precisely a single ounce, no more, no less--strikes this nobleman as cheeky at best, impudent at worst. For you see, I descend from old money--by which I mean there's very little of it left. I can appreciate fine drink, but not if I must auction off family heirlooms to afford a second round. To be fair, there are more modest offerings in the $14 range, mostly in the form of mixed cocktails. The bar menu? Tasty, indeed. I sampled a small bowl of fries--delightful, though at $9, more fitting for a dowager's tea plate than a full serving. But I did want more and this is a compliment. In sum: Stepdad's is charming, if a bit dear. The ambiance is lively, but seating can be scarce. I wish it every success--but I, with my modest inheritance and government stipend, must seek out an establishment that reveres both my nobility and my frugality. Still... if they ever decide to pour with a heavier hand, they may yet win back this Land Parker's loyal custom. I can only hope. read more

Have a great artisanal cocktail menu, beer, selection, and wines. So far I've only tried one of their appetizers and two of their entrées. Their cheese curd app was tasty. The sauce on the short rib entrée was overly salty, the meat was not as tender as typical short rib dishes, and the veggies were undercooked (like hard to chew). Altogether, it wasn't awful by any means it just wasn't as great as the other two dishes I tried. The parpadelle pasta dish was amazing! Like dreaming about it since I left. I was excited to try Stepdads. Tonight was the first time but I'm sick so was happy to see they had a curbside option. I ordered the braised pork rigatoni. After 10 minutes late for curbside, I went in and they said "oh sorry we're too busy- here's your food." The food was in a brown bag stapled shut. When I arrived home and opened the bag, the food container was gaping wide open and the food was barely warm. So while the taste was okay, I can't imagine how good it might e been if it had been hot.
