In my case, Stephan frankly acknowledged that in diagnosing a very complicated ECU/turbocharger issue a faulty part had been overlooked. He only charged me for the part I would have originally needed and nothing for the labor (over $450) to install the part. My Golf broke down on I-80 just west of Sacramento on my way to Tahoe last Friday - I had a bike race to get to on Saturday, so this was hugely inconvenient. I got towed to Stephan's (this is about 4PM on a Friday.) Was met by Stephan himself, who after listening to my story arranged a very reasonably priced rental car and had me picked up and on my way within 30 minutes. They worked late that Friday to diagnose my car and order the part it needed, and had the repair done early on Monday afternoon. In August SAH completed the needed work on the under carriage. We took it out and enjoyed multiple short trips with the improved ride and handling. To make it truly long-trip road worthy we had SAH rebuild the transmission and do the 1.8T conversion. We took it on a 250 mile round trip to the coast today. Can't say enough about my first experience with Stephan's Auto Haus. We were buying an '03 GTI VR6 in Sacramento, and we live 2 hours away. I wanted to get it checked out before we bought it, and honestly, we chose Stephan's because it was the closest VW specialist I could find on Yelp. I was thoroughly impressed! Scotty helped squeeze us in for that day. The mechanic and Scotty both knew GTIs really well, and the results were thorough and professional...Scotty took time to walk through it with us thoroughly. We felt very confident about what we were buying now. Both the shop and the waiting area are very clean and pleasant; and if you like being surrounded by Westys, this is the place to wait! I know that checking out a used car isn't a money maker for them, especially when we likely won't be able to come back since we live so far away. But it was clear to me that they care about their customers and about doing quality work at a fair price. I'd recommend them to anyone with a European car. read more

During this summer, our 09 VW Jetta was experiencing a bad shake at about 60mph. Well I just purchased 4 brand new tires from America's tire store the day before. I took it back to ATS and they stated that all tires were balanced. The shaking continued at 60mph. I took it back a 3rd time, and they told me I may have bad engine mounts or driveline. I told them my car never shook b4 I had the tires changed. Well I got frustrated and hopped over to Les Shwab who charged me $50 to redo the rebalancing. I took it out again, and still had the shakes. When I went back to LS, they told me that the balance was indeed off, so no refund. Arghh!.... well b4 I was going to be taking it down to the dealer (I really dislike dealers btw), our neighbor recommended Stephan's Auto Haus, so I did some additional research and saw a lot of good comments. I took our car to Stephan's Auto Haus and their mechanic took the time to even test ride with me in the car b4 they troubleshot. (The 2 other tire stores didn't do this b4 or after their servicing. They just relied on the specs their machine stated) ...anyway, SAH acknowledge the problem and pointed out that even new tires could be bad on occasions. They went ahead and had the tires rebalanced again just to make sure but the shaking still resided. They put the car on the lift and ran all tires to do a visual inspection of each wheel/tire while running. they were able to see a wabble on 2 of the tires. To help confirm if this was indeed the problem, Sara went above an beyond and offered to even switch out her wheels (off her own Jetta) and put them on our car to confirm this. We took the car out again and no shakes at all. Smooth ride at any speed. So in the end after ALL of SAH's servicing was documented, I went directly back to America's tire and told them what has been tested. I had them replace the 2 identified tires (again new), with 2 newer tires and lo and behold the problem vanished. They told me that even though their machine stated the wheels/tires were balanced, they are not able to validate that the rotating circumference is true. Don't know if they are lying or not, but I won't be going to America's or Les anymore. WOW, what a headache this all was just for 2 bad tires, BUT without the great customer service and expertise of Stephan's Auto Haus, It would have cost me a fortune If I took the car to the dealer... God only knows what the dealer would have "claimed" to be wrong with the car. AGAIN, THANKS SARA, STEPHAN AND ENTIRE STAFF FOR TAKING GREAT CARE OF OUR CAR AND US! Over the years I have spent at least $ 15,000 at Stephan's with no regrets until the last year or so. The writeup dated 8/25/17 by Boris J. is right on! I was about to make the same comments. When I ask about Stephan, the answer is evasive, and I have not seen him in the last couple of visits to the shop. I suspect that he may have sold the business and perhaps moved on to something less stressful. The person running the front counter has been of no help beyond coming up with $ 200+ bills for the most minor matters plus a long list of alleged deficiencies which another shop told me were not needed, any of them. When I asked him what the approximate cost might be to remedy all of them, his response was "a couple of grand should do it!" He needs a course or two in "customer relations," is an irritant and does not inspire confidence. read more

Best auto repair shop I've been to. Period. Now let me qualify that a little bit. I'm 60 years old. Been around the block more than a couple times, and to lots of repair shops. I don't like, or trust, auto repair shops in general. Call me a cynic, if you will, I call it personal experience. They have turned me into a semi-mechanic. Yes, I am the guy you see in the parking lot of Auto Zone, or Pep Boys, changing my own water pump, or transmission, or whatever. So it was with reluctance that I went to Stephans Autohaus, because I was traveling, without the proper tools, and frankly stumped by the root cause of my problems. This place is clean, orderly, competent, and do quality work, no b.s. If I lived within driving distance I'd hang up my own tools, no kidding. read more

I have been taking my Jetta TDI to Stephan for almost 5 years and trust him completely. He keeps detailed records on my car, trouble shoots, and researches issues for me. He is upfront with possible costs and alternatives. Communication is terrific and phone calls are returned quickly. The waiting room is comfortable and warm - about as welcoming as a shop room can be. The only reason that there are not five stars is because I was concerned that the reason that took me back to the shop was because it may have not been done throughly in the first place. It could have been many factors including my driving! Anyway, they stood behind their work and DIDNT CHARGE ME A DIME! The situation is hard to explain, but they were diligent in locating/diagnosing the problem, ensuring that it would not reoccur. I was totally pleased with the service. I have taken my car here numerous times since moving to Sac and I am happy with the service. I appreciate the communication, I like Sara(h?) who is ALWAYS helpful and really seems to understand what's going on with everything in the shop. We brought our 2005 Audi A4 in after 3 other shops, including the dealership, failed to be able to give us a good idea as to what was wrong. From the first interaction, Stephan's was wonderful. Good clear communication, definitive recommendations, and a great turn around time. After dealing with other shops in town who seem to expect people to just be able to leave their cars indefinitely and rarely, if ever getting calls when promised, Stephan's was such a positive surprise. Thank goodness we didn't fall for the dealer's solution that 'it must be the transmission because we can't find anything else.' CAVEAT EMPTOR!! Our experience seriously different than other reviewers. Most everything we had done on the old bug had to be done two or more times. On one occasion took it in for electrical/headlight problems. Next night driving home realized had NO working headlights! Back in the shop the next day. Had a recurring front problem, took in so many times lost count. Had to rebuild engine at least twice because of "defects and/or workmanship" issues. One occasion got it out of the shop, drove to So Cal, engine seized. Discovered the bolt on the flywheel not tight and tore up the motor. Of course, SAH wouldn't admit their mistake but repaired it as a "customer courtesy", (legalese for our lawyer said to say that). This is just the highlights...but you get the idea...in any case; CAVEAT EMPTOR!! read more

I found myself stuck on the side of the road (female). Looked up VW auto mechanics on my smart phone (I didn't have a mechanic), read the reviews and called the tow truck company. After having my Jetta towed to Stephan's Auto Haus, I was impressed! Not only are they nice (Stephan and Rob), clean, and upfront. They took me in, 3 minutes from closing and had my car fixed and ready to go the next afternoon. They didn't try to over sell anything and they fixed exactly what I needed. They even did a complete inspection and gave me the heads up on future ideas for maintenance. They picked me up from home when my car was ready, thank you Eugene. Had a nightmare with my warranty company covering my repairs. My audi needed new piston rings. Stephan worked very hard with me and we got the repairs I needed. Another great service experience at Stephan's! I am a picky consumer of car repair services and I have been sorely disappointed by many other places. They don't have extended hours or Saturday service. You won't find a fancy waiting area. BUT, they deliver where it really matters - Over the years, I have developed great respect for their owner, technicians, and the across the board honesty and work ethic I have witnessed. I was a fan of this place at one time, but my last experience was very unfortunate. We took our vehicle in to have some odd noises checked out. The speedo was also acting up, with the needle bouncing all over the place. They came back with an estimate of almost $5,000, saying we needed all kinds of suspension arm bushings and motor mounts replaced. They chalked up the speed to the engine torquing (due to bad mounts) and stretching the speedo cable. Okay, except my vehicle doesn't have a speedo cable - it has a speed sensor. I also later discovered the clunk was a loose fire extinguisher in the rear cargo area. I had another shop fix the speedometer issue for $180. Needless to say I was pretty annoyed with all of this. I have had them do a fair amount of work in the past, some of it very expensive, and always felt fairly treated. But this time I got the feeling they didn't want to even look into the problem and gave me a shotgun estimate for an absurd fee figuring it would either make me go away or make them a fortune. It achieved the former, only it is for good. I won't be back. read more
