Needed a breakfast place that opened at 7 a.m. and Stepping Stone does. Quick service, generous servings.....we split a spinach scramble that was perfectly cooked and generous with the veggies. Friendly, lively diner-ish restaurant that's great for brunch! Came with some family on a Friday morning and had a nice meal. The interior is a bit beat, but it adds to the personality. There seemed to be a few regulars and the employees were having fun. I ordered the cup of soup/half sandwich deal with the vegetarian chili and cold turkey sandwich but ended up receiving the tomato Gorgonzola soup instead. It was still good but next time I'll make sure to try the chili. My dad got the biscuits and gravy which was a massive plate but definitely worth the money! (He ended up taking over half of it home.) Mr. Richman has, in my opinion the single greatest job in all of the known Universe. All we can do is sit back and learn from him. I have a Doctor up near 25th and Lovejoy and when I go see her I have to be fasting for 12 hours, so I schedule my appoints super early so I can run down the block and grab some bagels at Kettleman's however recent I found out that those greedy scum sucking pigs sold out to Einstein Brothers, the people that bring you mind-numbingly average bagels at Noahs. As I adjust to a world without Kettleman's I started looking for other options in the area to break my fast with. Didn't take but a minute on my DroidX with my Yelp App to figure out where to steer the mighty Yelpmobile. The Stepping Stone. I had prepared myself for how small it looked on TV and from occasion drive by's but man, this place is small. It was so small I had to walk outside to change my mind about what to drink! (rimshot) I walked in and there were seats open, bonus of visiting on a weekday morning I guess. The server that seated me seemed like a typical Portland disassociated Hipster living the dream of ignoring people in a northwest Portland eating establishment, but he actually warmed up to me and was very quick about his service. Can't always judge a book its cover. If you are even a casual follower of my reviews you know about my obsessive, unhealthy love affair with biscuits & gravy. Now to you that may sound like a bad thing but I assure you, to me it's not. A good biscuits & gravy is as good as the finest things in life, only more filling. It did not feel like that long before this large plate came out covered in white gravy. How do they make their gravy so white? TLDR: Average breakfast food. Large proportions. Groups, bring cash. Small diner that serves breakfast all day. Lunch and dinner served between certain hours. No reservations, but a large group can be accommodated for if someone arrives early and they have enough tables to put together. Be warned: the larger your group, the harder it will be to hear people further away. If you have a large group, tip is included in the check. Bring cash for ease if splitting. Proportions are large. Order one entree first and then order more if you need to if you're still hungry. Tables have the usual condiments, butter, and blackberry jam in a jar. Traditional Bacon Strips: bacon didn't have much meat and you could feel the grease come out when you bite in. Personally, I'm not too big of a fan of that. Hash browns are thin potato slices instead of slivers---so they aren't as crunchy. Bread that comes with the meal is toasted and lightly buttered--more like a single lazy smear--so you most likely have to add more butter on your toast. read more

They have a early bird special that's $4.50 before 9 am that is amazing 2 eggs toast and potatoes the perfect early morning start. They have a full bar so mimosas or beer can accompany your breakfast if that's your thing. It's a great place to stop before heading up to Washington Park. The funky decor definitely lets you know your in Portland. A funky dive worth stopping at it can get busy so prepare to wait outside up to 15-20 minutes on average. Best breakfast in Portland! Been coming here for years and it never fails to impress.

After hearing about this place from one of my best friends and seeing this restaurant highlighted on Man vs. Food, I had to try it out. First off, one of my friends from "the hood" aka Hood River came to visit and my other best friend tagged along for some breakfast glory. We managed to get a parking spot at front of the cafe saturday morning. Unfortunately the place was super packed and it would be an hour wait. We went somewhere else that day. Later on that week, one of my best friends and I decided to go there, this time being on a Thursday night. I was relieved to see it was very quiet and this time we got a table. It was very much worth the wait, the staff was great, friendly, and made sure we were taken care of. The breakfast food is quite delicious, even for dinner time. I enjoyed the coffee with "something something" meaning you can have a shot of any liquor you may desire. My personal choice is Bailey's Irish cream. The food came out promptly and I enjoy the side condiments they offer, especially the berry jam. 3 days later, we went there again on a Sunday evening and it was still laid back and quiet. The steak and eggs are a real treat. On a Friday morning, we went there with my group just before heading out to Seattle for a mini vacation. We tried the mancakes and they don't lie, they are really huge, I just ordered on mancake and I could barely eat half. The biscuits and gravy could be improved, tasted funky but then I did have other food to eat too. Highly recommend going there during the evenings as it's more relaxed and less hectic. "You eat here because we let you". I was really impressed with this breakfast place. We went in on a weekend morning and didn't even have to wait....got a pint sized mimosa and a huge breakfast. The pancakes were massive and delicious...we ended up sharing them with some strangers at a neighboring table. Everything was great....look forward to going back...and the service was awesome. This place is vintage Portland. Weird but totally dedicated to excellence in food. When a place has pictures of their customers celebrating their triumph over the menu, it just has to be good. My standard breakfast is the "Ranch" style breakfast with bacon, scrambled eggs, hash browns, wheat toast, and coffee. I am scouring the Earth for the perfect breakfast and nothing but the best will do. The hash browns must be LOOSE and perfectly grilled (i.e., not burnt). I just hate hash browns that come in a solid square with no love. Why even bother to take it out of the shrink wrap that tried to protect it from six months in the freezer (or maybe it was imported from China)? The only place I have found during the last 10 years that knows how to do hash browns right (and bacon too btw) is a small diner at the base of the DHS office (on the Parkway, not downtown) in Salem. Scrambled eggs must be SCRAMBLED. I mean fresh, perky, and full of life. They should be FLUFFY, not some congealed amalgamation of yellow paste with a few halfhearted folds thrown in. They should be BRIGHT. Their pure yellow color should instantly bring joy to your heart and comfort you with the thought that today really is going to be alright. They need to be mixed well so there is no goo hanging around but not beaten to death so they can do nothing but lay limp on your plate with no hope of resurrection. They need to be made with great skill, dedication, and attention. You cannot simply throw them on the skillet and forget about them while you cook the other, more important parts of the meal. Bacon must be THICK, CHEWY, and LARGE. Not a thin, shriveled, burnt and tangled scrap of some unrecognizable material that explodes in your lap and cracks a tooth when you take a bite. Now, I don't expect the coffee to be as good as an Americano from the Barista but it must not be your typical, neglected diner coffee made from cheap beans and left to fester on the warmer all morning. That's not too much to ask. Is it? Why is it so hard to find a place that knows how to do a classic breakfast? I mean, they do it a bunch of times every day! Well, the Stepping Stone meets all these stringent requirements in spades! They don't serve hash browns but the POTATOES (kinda scalloped style without the yucky cheese, perfectly grilled) were magnificent! Light, flavorful, very pleasing to the eye. Warm and comforting. Definitely two thumbs up! The bacon was thick and chewy, perfectly made with a complex, deep hue that just says BACON! The eggs met all of the most stringent criteria, including the fluffiness. The wheat toast was exceptional. I only require that the toast be not burnt and not stale. But this was outstanding. I believe they source it from another local Portland bakery that provides an amazing selection of breads with total dedication to excellence in food. The coffee was GOOD. Not espresso (although I'm pretty sure you can get that) but, like any self-respecting Portland establishment, they take their coffee seriously, prepare it with great care, and source it from Stumptown. Finally, the weirdness factor is definitely a plus. So I am grateful to the Dragonfly Coffee House and my former coworker for the referral. And now consider the Stepping Stone my go-to place for breakfast in Portland. While you're there, check out the Christmas tree ornaments that rise and fall from the ceiling. I think my theory of its origins is pretty sound. But I will leave it to you to discover. How do they think up this stuff? I definitely need to go back for a mug souvenir. Another diner rises above the fray. I had a meeting in a different part of town than I normally am in. I took the opportunity to get some reading done while grabbing a bite to eat. Stepping stone has an awesome counter. It has a built in shelf underneath, which is perfect to stash your gear while you are eating. Their coffee was a few notches above many diners. It was good, deep roasted, strong and hot. For a guy who takes his Java black, I was happy. The menu was pretty varied, with numerous options for a vegetarian. I had a three egg omelette with feta, spinach, mushrooms and artichokes. The artichokes were canned, and had that citric acid tang to them, and the feta, which was abundantly present, at times overwhelmed the other flavors. The omelette itself was made in a pan, not on the griddle--a real omelette in other words. It was a bit tough--probably cooked a bit too long, though as you can see in the photo, it stayed yellow the entire time--part of a traditional omelette. But it didn't have that soft comforting quality to it. The home fries, meanwhile, had nice color to them. They weren't at all crispy, which is generally my preference. Nonetheless, they were delicate and buttery tasting. Unsalted of course--while that's a personal pet peeve, I get that low sodium folks are out and about. It's just that salting them off the heat never quite tastes as even to me. So even though I tend to prefer my spuds with some crunch, these had their own happy and individual identity. Yum. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely. But Stepping Stone has that awesome diner vibe, solid and huge portions, and solid coffee. I'll be back. read more

Now that we've got the food out-of-the-way, the restaurant is very adorable. They've got action figures and toys hanging from the ceiling, pictures and posters all over the walls and a generally chill vibe. The staff isn't really over friendly, they'll come, take your order and be on their way. I was going there pretty regularly about four years ago and I could get a seat, no problem, nowadays, this is quiet the Hoppin spot. There's almost always a line outside, so if you're planning on going, I would suggest getting there half an hour before they open so that you can get your spot in line on the weekend. I decided to take some friends here a few months ago thinking it would be the same and we waited 45 minutes for a table. That's not on the restaurant by any means, I'm glad they're so popular! But I would just say make sure to give yourself plenty of time if you're planning on eating here for breakfast. read more

I specifically wanted to try this menu item because it was featured on Man v. Food, but I didn't want just plain buttermilk or whole wheat. Instead, I chose one of the specials of the day, which included cherries and chocolate chips in the pancakes, making them more tasty. Most people order a single stack and cannot finish more than half of it. The guy from Man v. Food had the max number of stacks possible - 3 pancakes. I ordered the short stack, which consists of 2 pancakes (about $6-7.50). Mancakes are giant pancakes, 13 in diameter! They were so wide, they were larger than my plate so the syrup was falling onto the table - oops! It was extremely filling, delicious but also very fluffy. It was very challenging trying to finish both of them, but alas, and to the waiter's amazement, I emptied my plate! The place is right on the corner, looks like a diner inside. Small, narrow walkways between the booths/tables. They have little figurines hanging on string that move up and down whenever the front door opens. Portions portions portions. Last time I was here, I went all out and ordered a chicken fried steak, biscuits and gravy, and an egg. Might I say, $5 for a chicken fried steak is not a bad deal...but my was I swamped in gravy. What's even crazier was that I finished all my food. The food here was delicious, and portions are generous. I was pleased with the food overall but I made the mistake of ordering two meals smothered in gravy. I would definitely recommend both the chicken fried steak and the biscuits and gravy. Maybe not both in one sitting! Speaking of chicken fried steak, the "Bad Ass Omelette" here is truely bad ass. This is what I had on my previous visit. The omelette is stuffed with deliciously fried chicken fried steak, hash browns, vegetables, and JALAPENOS for a kick. Oh yeah, lets just smother than in gravy too. My friend was not a fan of this because the jalapenos were too spicy for him, but I like spices and loved it. I would not, however, go for any other omelette on the menu. They all sound pretty basic, and other than that, my friend has ordered one and it was pretty darn small. There is a bit of outdoor seating too. We arrived on a nice overcast Sunday morning just because 9am. Got our name on the clipboard and were called within 4 minutes. Food came quickly out of the kitchen and was accurate. Huge biscuit, Mancake enormous. The walnut 'nana pancake was excellent. My Neo Bobcat omelette was ordered with feta. I'm not an omelette kind of guy, this one was fine, but did not convince me to order an omelette again, nothing personal Neo Bob. The order of biscuits and gravy I saw at other peoples tables looked really good and a huge portion, I may try that next time. Pretty good cup 'o Joe (coffee from Portland Roasting) It is pretty loud inside with chatter being so cozy and all. Add loud music and you must raise your voice to be heard multiplying the overall volume inside. I dislike loud diners. This place is basically a diner that makes huge pancakes and was made popular as it was once featured on Man Vs Food for the "mancakes" (basically a pancake the size of a dinner plate). When you first arrive, you need to sign up on the clipboard outside. The weird thing is that there's no one really manning the clipboard so we let them know we were there to make sure. The service here was lacking. The majority of the waiters were really rude and unfriendly except for one guy. the waiter who took our order didn't go over the specials much to the dismay of my boyfriend who saw the specials sign after we ordered and wanted something off the specials menu instead. However they were diligent with refilling water/coffee. The food itself was actually pretty good. Everyone enjoyed the omelettes (the meat and cheese, the bacon Swiss avocado, and the jalapeño) and the hashbrowns were very flavorful. You can tell they were cooked in butter. Adorable little neighborhood diner. My husband and I lived in alphabet district/slab town and walked here every weekend (and sometimes during the week while I was pregnant). We have ordered pickup a few times over covid to support the small business, even though we live in South Waterfront now. We're happy to see Stepping Stone is still open!!! I've been coming here for over five years. There's a reason for that....It's so darn amazing! Stepping Stone Cafe is located in the historic NW neighborhood. The neighborhood is beautiful with many houses built in the late 1800's and early teens. The cafe it's self was built in 1912. It's a classic looking dinner with a counter area (10 seats), two big booths for large groups, 2 booth for groups of 4, 3 tables for groups of two, and 4 tables for groups of four. So probable no more than 50 seats in total. There is tupically a long wait on the weekends. I've waited up to 45 minutes on a Sunday morning. However, if you get there before 9 a.m. you will have a much better chance of getting a seat sooner. I have only received the best service. They are on top of filling up your coffee and water. The food is so so very good. I order breakfast no matter the time of day. So I can only attest to the quality of breakfast. My only complaint would be...They don't toast their English muffins enough. I ask for it to be more toasted, and it still will be under done. Lastly, their coffee beans are from Portland Roasting Co. The coffee is amazing, and your cup will always be full. When I arrived here, there was a line outside. What you need to do is to write your name on the list by the entrance and wait to be called. The wait was decent, about 10-15 minutes. I noticed through the windows that the waiters quickly cleaned and set up the tables so people can be in and out constantly. This place is like an old-school diner with upbeat music playing in the background. The noise level is average to loud and everyone looks happy. All the waiters were friendly and helpful. They seem to treat all customers like VIP. I've never been to a restaurant where servers always made sure that all their customers are hydrated. They refill your water and coffee constantly. It's a cute place for groups to eat usually four would be more convenient group size or a couples brunch. I got one plate of food and it was a lot of food. If you're not too hungry, I'd definitely share with a friend. The food is warm, fresh and tasty. I ordered a breakfast plate and the gravy was flavorful and so fulfilling. Pros: large portions, good food for $, early morning and late night hours Cons: limited seating For brunch I shared a Smothered B.A. omelet which is filled with chicken fried steak, hash browns, fresh jalapeno & Tillamook cheddar topped off with country gravy. First the jalapenos were definitely fresh providing a good kick and contrast to the gravy smothering the chicken fried steak and other filling... and believe me it was food coma filling. My table shared a short stake (2) Mancake and we couldn't finish them off. Although large, ~13" diameter, their taste do not eclipse other hotcake places in town...still yummy. I also got to try the Eggs Benedict- the yolks could have been a little more runny but it was still good. I may get this next time. Not the speediest of service but it'll do. I can easily see how this casual cafe could be packed, particularly for the late night crowd. I visited mid-morning so street parking wasn't an issue either. Small little cafe with slow steady service. I ordered the Smothered Badass which is Country Fried Chicken Steak, Hashbrowns, Cheese & Jalapeños inside an omelette with Country Gravy poured onto it. Instead of toast I substituted for a Mancake (13"). The portion was so gigantic I'm glad I shared this meal, but even sharing I couldn't finish my half. The food came out pretty fast and it was still hot! I came here because I saw this restaurant filmed on the show Man V. Food. I wouldn't agree with the prices, however. It was a little pricey for the food, possibly since being advertised on the television show. It was worth a visit! Really liked this place, classic simple breakfast done really well. Line moved pretty quickly and probably waited 15 minutes with ~8 people in front. Loved the bacon and the super dense biscuit. read more
