A was having a weekday brunch with some girlfriends and we decided to try our Stepping Stone Cafe. It gives off diner vibes but the food was much more than something you'd get from a greasy spoon. I ordered the Chilaquiles Verde off their "Really Special Specials" menu and it was amazing! The flavors were complex but comforting. The staff were super friendly and welcoming. I to-goed a tuna melt with fries, and my boyfriend got the chicken fried steak. Both were heavy, but filling and we enjoyed it. I liked that my tuna didn't fall out of my sandwich and create a mess, and I thought the fries stayed nice and crispy despite being in a to go box. This is unrelated to my review, but one of the servers dumped some leftover omelette onto the road for one of the crows and told us it liked to steal the jam packs. Shortly after she went inside, a crow swooped in, ate all the eggs, and returned and flew off with a jam pack. Just thought it was funny. read more

A perfect neighborhood, diner style breakfast and lunch spot. I've lived in this neighborhood for two years now and this was my first time stopping in. Stopped in this morning and it was pretty busy for a Friday. I grabbed a spot at the counter & didn't have to wait which was great. The service is kind and genuine and they play the perfect music for the setting. The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, etc. I don't know why but this really made it that much better for me. I got two eggs over easy, rye toast & veggie sausage. The portions were big and they cooked my eggs just how I like them and I love how they actually give the proper amount of toast(two pieces cut in half unlike some places that do just one slice, this really bothers me). They have eggs Benedict on the menu which looked really good and for 10.50 it's probably the cheapest Benedict in town. They also do a variety of specials that sounded really good. I can't recommend this place enough if you're looking a non-pretentious but fun place to have breakfast in the neighborhood. They even serve cocktails & mimosas too. My wife, her bother and I opted to grab brunch instead of attempt to solve an imaginary murder in the pouring rain. This was our first time to Stepping Stone. The cafe was tightly packed but the atmosphere was inviting. There was plenty of variety in the menu. My wife went with her standard, eggs and hash, and my bro-in-law opted for the eggs Benedict. I decided on the veggie scramble, minus the cheese, with a house-made biscuit. I ordered the Salty Dog, a greyhound with a salted rim, to accompany my scramble. We were all pretty happy with our selections. The house-potatoes could have been a bit crispier and the biscuit was a little dry, but the Hollandaise was excellent, my scramble was full of veggies, and we left full and happy. The Salty dog was perfect, I'll be back to try their Bloody Mary. read more

Oliver's special sounded good in theory. But temperature was inconsistent. A few parts were hot but most of it tasted barely warm. Somewhat lost count of how many times I've been to Stepping Stone. First time we came was thanks to the very first episode of Man vs Food. I've not made the mistake of ordering a full stack of mancake since my first visit! (just way too much.) This place isn't big, so arrive early for brunch (think 930ish), it was a swift five minute wait at that time on a Saturday during the most recent visit. My go to dish has been the smothered bad ass, which is fried chicken steak in a three egg omelet, with jalapeños for the added kick. Mancakes are thick aside from being huge, typically moist and I like to enjoy it with the gravy from my smothered bad ass. They serve Portland Roast coffee, which is decent but not great. We enjoy taking our out of town guests here for the vibe, and the novelty of being featured on a food show. Service has ranged differently on different visits throughout the years, and this recent visit was nothing but fantastic. read more

Saturday late morning, we waited for a good 30 minutes for a table for four. Small local place, as to be expected but we'd like to have seen them open up the outdoor tables which could easily have been done with the weather but, perhaps to curb their staffing, they opted not to. Finally seated, a guy took our drink orders, simple coffee and water. We told him we were ready to order (having already decided whilst on line outside) but he promptly told us that he doesn't take orders and that there's only one server, and that they will come by. We waited 15 minutes as we watched a staff of three move around between manning the counter, making shakes and brewing coffee, clearing tables, picking up checks etc. Unfortunately we had to make it kind of obvious that we were waiting for someone to come to take our order, and finally with eye contact, the server uttered "Be right there." Orders placed and surprisingly, the food didn't take as long as we had dreaded it would - in about 10-15 minutes we were served our beautiful plates. Food was overall, good. Their Country Fried Steak is some of the best we've had. Their homemade biscuit resembles a dinner roll, and isn't your typical biscuit. Theirs is more true to a bread, and not flakey or crumbly. Stand alone, it's pretty bland, dry and not at all salty or buttery but with some butter and jam, accompanied or accompanied with some gravy - good enough. Omelettes were good, but nothing too complicated there. Good variety/options, good portions. Their hash browns are really home fries. Their mancake (giant pancake) is definitely more of a novelty as people see how huge they are and think that it's going to be something amazing - as did we. But alas, big indeed but bland, dry and actually really difficult to cut with a knife for some reason. We saw the table next to us with Banana Nut French Toast and that looked amazing. Also, some sort of sticky (cinnamon?) bun with icing that also looked really good. If there isn't a long wait, we'd be willing to try Stepping Stone again; for the Country Fried Steak, and French Toast. Hopefully next time - better, more attentive and prompt service as well. read more

My man & I have been going here almost weekly (before COVID) since we found this place. We just started going again 2 weeks ago. We love the atmosphere! The server always welcomes us & everyone is friendly. They're having inside and outdoor seating to space people out. We have tried multiple meals and all have been delicious & filling. read more

If you're looking for the best breakfast spot in Portland, look nowhere else. This place is it. My favorite thing about traveling is getting to discover the best places to eat at wherever I am. The only reason I knew about this place is because a friend of mine lived in Portland a few years ago and she told me I had to eat here. She also advised me on what to eat. This was where I had my last meal in Portland this past Monday. We got there right before noon and were seated right away. One random thing I noticed after we were seated is how they have random things hanging from the ceiling and when the door would open, a bunch of bells started ringing. Some of the things hanging where members of Kiss, Joker from Batman and other random figures. As I was ordered to do, I got the chicken fried steak with gravy. The traditional way because I wasn't ready to have it with an omelette. I also decided to chase it down with a cider. Let me tell you how good the food is. The moment my plate was set down in front of me I switched to silent mode. The first bite was so good, I forgot to look up. By the time I finally did, my friends were barely halfway through their meal. I cleared my plate so quick even I was impressed. Seriously so good I'm pretty sure I made inappropriate sounds after every bite. The biscuit which by the way was bigger than my fist was just so good even on its own. Then you add the jam and OMG. Highly recommend this place! We waited around 20 minutes to get seated. Once we got in the place was packed but we managed to get a good table. The cafe has a very interesting vibe, cool and badass. There are so many subtleties all around the restaraunt that make it worth while to pay close attention to the surroundings. The food was really good, we ordered the Country omelette with a side of bacon and the Smothered Badass omelette. The portions were pretty sizable (enough to make us skip lunch) and very tasty. The biscuit was really good, fresh, so was the coffee. The staff was helpful and attentive, even though the place was full. Definitely coming back on our next visit. read more

It's the perfect neighborhood diner and actually opens at breakfast time, a huge plus as most spots don't open until 9-10, not great for us early birds The service was also the best I've had recently, the servers tag teamed the tables so everything was really efficient, coffee stayed full, they brought our ticket just before we were done and it only took a few seconds to close. That's so rare these days, and they were all super friendly. The food was great too, the tofu scramble with fried sliced potatoes and a bowl of fruit was a perfect vegan and gluten free breakfast. They didn't have silverware for everyone at my table and begrudgingly brought some in no hurry at all after the food had arrived. The mancake was nothing but I giant, thick pancake and the server was incredibly rude when I pointed out that it didn't have anything on it that was advertised, and they didn't ask what I wanted on it (they asked me nothing and charged extra for the mancake). The nothing special breakfast food and cramped, loud space was not worth the terrible service. How disappointing. read more

First time visit today. Staff is friendly and prompt. Portions are generous. Mancakes are large; glad to have a whole wheat option. Hash browns seem to be made in-house; no seasoning or onions so they were a bit bland. Same thing with spinach omelet; they simply folded a good amount of raw spinach into the omelet with cheese. No onions or seasoning. I probably won't return but you may find your favorite breakfast there so you may want to try it. read more
