Yes, I am in my 30's and getting my wisdom tooth pulled. I'm a bit of a procrastinator. Dr. Steven Perkins was recommended to me by my dentist, Dr. Hoppe. According to her, he has pulled every wisdom tooth in Westlake for the last 20 years. I have no facts to back that up, just what I have heard. Anyway, I went in for my consultation. (I love docs that take the time to discuss a procedure with you before you actually have it done) He suggested that I have just a local anesthesia since we were only pulling one tooth. When he saw the look of fear in my face, he immediately said, "But how about we just put you under?" YES! Thank you. Dr. Perkins is very sweet and personally called me that evening to see how I was feeling. The next day, I had trouble getting my wound to stop bleeding and his staff called me every half hour offering suggestions and checking on me until it stopped. Per the recommendation of my dentist, Dr. Jim Tyree I went to see Dr. Perkins to have all 4 wisdom teeth removed as well as a first molar that was severely decayed. When I called for the consultation, the receptionist also booked my surgery for the following day. So, between seeing Dr. Tyree and Dr. Perkins, I only had to wait a week! I hate having to wait for an appointment. The consult was pretty straight forward. The dental assistant put on a video that described the process, Dr. Perkins came in and answered my questions, and wrote prescriptions for pain and antibiotics. He was even able to move my surgery up an hour and a half so I wouldn't be hungry all day. (I had a light IV sedation.) The day of surgery, I was seen quickly, changed into a Hill Country Oral Surgery T-shirt and taken back to the room where the procedure was done. Even though I had a light sedation, I was completely knocked out. I don't remember anything about the procedure. All I know is, I woke up, and my teeth were gone! The after care nurse was very kind and explained everything to me and my boyfriend for what I needed to do when I got home. Once I was ready, she wheeled me out to the car. Dr. Perkins called to check on me later that day, which was a nice touch. But, the best part is I had very little pain after the surgery. I think I took pain meds for about a day and after that I didn't need them. That really speaks to the skill of Dr. Perkins. read more

Dr. Perkins pulled seven teeth from my 12 year old about a week ago. He did a great job and my son was riding his bike at 5:30 that afternoon. The woman that takes care of billing informed me about a savings program (Aetna Vital Savings) that made the procedure cost less than half what we were first quoted. I went to see Dr. Perkins upon the recommendation of my dentist. I needed to have a first molar pulled, due to damage from a broken filling, etc., and, apparently, the trend is for dentists to refer patients to an oral surgeon to extract a tooth ... news to me, but whatever. The day arrived and I drove over to his office. It was raining cats and dogs, and I had no idea where I was going. I live in Jonestown, not Westlake. I found the building without issue, but when I got there, I realized it was a large complex with multiple suites, and I didn't have a suite number. I called them on my cell from the parking lot and the girl who answered the phone asked me what I could see from my car. She said she knew where I was, and that she'd be out to get me in a second. Before I could get out of the car, she was standing in front of me, ready to show me the way! In the rain. Really? What service! I met Dr. Perkins a few minutes after filling out the paperwork. We talked about what he was going to do, and he gave me ample opportunity to ask questions. He wrote a couple of prescriptions (pain and antibiotic), and then one of his assistants came in to discuss payment / insurance, etc. I paid up front and then was escorted back for the surgery. When the assistant and I entered the operating suite, she remarked that it was pretty cold in there, and I should let her know if I wanted a blanket. Dr. Perkins was just coming through the door at that moment and said, "I'll grab one now." He came back five seconds later with a crisp, white (clean) cotton blanket that had come straight from a warmer! It was awesome! He and his assistant were great. Very friendly and fun to chat with, while the anesthetic was taking effect. Ten minutes later, the tooth was out. I was given a very thorough briefing about post-operative care, and a handy little reference sheet to take with me, and was on my way. Dr. Perkins called that evening around 7:00 to check in with me, and I was doing fine. I'm six days post-op today, and I've had no issues. As trips to the dentist go, I would say this is probably the best experience I've ever had. Dr. Steven Perkins was recommended to me by my Orthodontist Dr. Randy Kunik after one of my wisdom teeth broke off while I was brushing one day. Turns out I had cavities in all four wisdom teeth. I had already made the decision early on that I was not going to get my wisdom teeth out since I've been told for years that I had plenty of room for them to come in, and they did beautifully. But, as your dentist will tell you, they serve no function and they are hard to keep healthy. So I went to see Dr. Perkins. His staff was amazing and so friendly from the start making me feel important and like I mattered. When it was time to see Dr. Perkins he greeted me with warm enthusiasm. He began right away educating me on the problem and how he was going to fix it. I had several questions of my own to ask him directly and he took the time to answer all of them for me. He offered his personal opinion but made sure I was comfortable by educating me and making sure I understood the facts of my teeth so I could make the best decision for myself. The surgery was a walk in the park. One tooth was a little stubborn so Dr. Perkins spend extra time taking care of it. I couldn't tell at all. What caught my attention most, was how thoughtful Dr. Perkins is. He called to check up on me that same day and the next day to see how I was doing. He made himself available if I needed him for anything. This was the best surgical experience I've ever had. Simply put, Dr. Perkins, Dr. Cavaretta and Staff are the best, period! My teeth hurt. The teeth that were surgically removed from my head a few days ago are probably delighted in their little jar on a shelf somewhere. Maybe I should ask if I can get them as souvenirs of the sheer panic and debilitating pain I've been experiencing over the past month or so (pain for the last few days, panic for the months before that). Falling into the "I'm too old for this shit" category, I, Quani C., had my three wisdom teeth removed at the ripe old age of 28... having procrastinated for several years now. And, I must say, it was an awful experience, but notsomuch from the doctor standpoint. My dentist, Dr. Tyree, referred me to Dr. Perkins for my much procrastinated wisdom tooth removal. Because Dr. Tyree is such a nice guy, I decided to trust his judgement... and Allison's, seeing as how she's the first to review him. My consult appointment was disappointing, making me more concerned about my choice of oral surgeon. Dr. Perkins was running about 30 minutes behind, therefore making me feel rushed in the consult process. He was nice enough, but kept getting interrupted by the people in his office asking questions about other patients. I was so nervous that I had my partner come with me and nudge me to ask questions I'd previously thought of, but had forgotten in my nervousness. As the day crept closer and closer (unfortunately, there was almost a month between my consult and surgery), I kept getting more and more and more anxious. I tried calling to ask for anxiety meds for the day of surgery, but got the answering machine... with an old message, on a Wednesday morning. Made me just a little more hesitant about the whole process. The day finally came, and the experience with Dr. Perkins and his staff completely changed. They made me change into one of their t-shirts for the surgery (I guess so I wouldn't get blood on mine, although I'd picked one that could be blood- worthy) and I was whisked back to the operating suite. I spoke briefly with the nurses as they were putting monitors onto me and Dr. Perkins nailed the IV the first time... quickly giving me some sedation. I remember crying and being very upset, being told to take some deep breaths and calm down... then being taken to the "recovery" area to watch a video about recovery. They gave me some time to fully wake up from the sedation, gave me an ice pack, and then put me in a wheelchair and brought me out to my partner's awaiting car. Dr. Perkins called me later in the evening to check to make sure I was okay and told me to call him if I had any problems, although I would've felt bad calling on a weekend. I still can't open my mouth very wide, the stitches are difficult to not feel with my tongue, and my teeth still hurt... not up to solid food yet. I'm going back for a consult later this week. At least I got a free t shirt and ice pack out of the deal. read more

I would recommend Dr. Perkins to anyone needing oral surgery. Like the other reviewers, I also procrastinated on getting my wisdom teeth pulled. (I'm 25) They were completely impacted, and I was losing sleep at night thinking about how i really should get them taken out. Dr. Perkins first gives you a consultation, and he is so warm, kind, and really at ease with his skills. He wasn't even phased by how impacted my widsom teeth were. His staff worked up a payment sheet, and with delta dental my payment was surprisingly low, considering I being totally knocked out. Before your surgery the staff gives you a great list of things you should do to prepare for surgery and also things to remember while you are recovering. Totally great because there's a lot of things to remember. Before the surgery the staff also calls in your prescription to your pharmacy so you can get your drugs before, not after. VERY GOOD. That night after the surgery, Dr. Perkins ACTUALLY called me. Yes, a doctor called a patient. Is this even possible these days? Of course I was completely knocked out sleeping and I missed the call, but he left a nice message checking up on me. The next day his staff called me and asked how i was doing and if i had any questions. A few days after your surgery they have you come in for a check up to see if you are healing well. Another amazing thing about Dr. Perkins is that even while his office was closed for renovations, he managed to see me in another dentist's office when I had a minor freak-out about something. This is the best place to go for oral surgery in Austin. I had my wisdom teeth removed by Dr. Perkins, and the whole experience was remarkably smooth. My dentist actually had recommended a different place, but I went to Dr. Perkins instead based on a family member's recommendation. I went to the initial consultation appointment with an x-ray from my dentist that was covered by my insurance only once every 3 years, but it wasn't the best quality so Dr. Perkins took another one for free. I knew that I wanted general anesthesia for the surgery, and he didn't try to talk me out of it or convince me otherwise. His staff was able to take care of all the insurance stuff without any trouble. The actual surgery was as good as a surgery can get. The staff gave me a free t-shirt to wear so I wouldn't ruin my clothes. Dr. Perkins even called me later that evening to check up on me, but I was too groggy to answer the phone. The healing process did not take very long and I was back at work 3 days after my surgery. Overall, I can guarantee that Dr. Perkins and his team will take great care of you when you have oral surgery! read more

My experience was much closer to Alison P's than Quani C's. I was very nervous about having my wisdom teeth removed, but ultimately really just wanted to get it over with. I just recently turned 19, found out my wisdom teeth were going to come in at a weird angle and/or crowd, and decided to get them out this summer. They were able to get me in for a consult the next day, and a week later, I had my surgery. Dr. Perkins came highly recommended by my orthodontist (and several others), so I gave him a shot. During the consult, he was very nice and friendly, and mostly pretty comforting. He told us the risks, but said he personally had never once had a patient suffer permanent nerve damage from a wisdom teeth removal, which made me feel better. He assured us that the surgical fee was one-time, and that even if we had to go back in for dry socket and get things dressed and fixed up and have follow up appointments, they weren't any additional cost. Our insurance covered most of the surgery too, which was nice. Anyway. The surgery was quick, all four were removed under general anesthesia, he said everything went really well. They called several times the next few days - Perkins himself and staff members - to make sure the bleeding had stopped and all was going well. They hooked me up with lots of gauze, too, which was nice of them. Overall, would highly recommend. read more

I had four wisdom teeth removed by Dr. Perkins about two weeks ago. At each necessary appointment (initial consultation, surgery, follow ups) I never waited more than 2 minutes in the waiting room. As others have stated, Dr. Perkins called me to follow up late the afternoon of surgery and I was very comfortable with him and his staff at all times. I did end up with dry sockets, at no fault of Dr. Perkins, and each appointment to deal with the very painful complication was quick and efficient. I would definitely recommend him and will take my daughters here when and if the time comes that they need any extractions of their own! read more

Dr. Perkins is probably the most amazing oral surgeon I have come across. I have had oral surgery before, and my oral surgeons have been fantastic. Dr. Perkins and his team, however, raise that to a whole new awesome level. I had my bottom two wisdom removed and everyone I knew told me stories of trouble, trials, tribulations and agony I was about to undertake. Well, nothing could have been further from the truth. At my consultation I was given clear, friendly advice about the situation and I could tell Dr. Perkins was a Ninja Oral surgeon. At the actual appointment, he told me it would be 45 minutes from start to finish. And I think they did it in 47 minutes :). I was awake (local anesthetic only) and the speed and precision of both Dr. Perkins skill as well as his "mind meld" with his assistant was nothing short of astonishing. He talked to me as he did the surgery with complete confidence...at the same time giving me complete clarity as to where we were. I have never seen anything so well conducted in all my life. It was so amazing, at times I got lost in the process envy and forgot I was being operated on. Ok so the results: 6 days later.....almost no pain, eating everything in site, and well...shocked this was all so easy after avoiding it for ....30 years! Dr. Perkins is GREAT! I actually had his partner do the wisdom teeth removal, but he soon went out of town. Dr. Perkins then took over my case, and what a case it was. Most likely due to my own lack of patience, I have had a great deal of trouble with dry socket and infections. :( Dr. Perkins is the sweetest guy. He has taken me on and put up with all my mouth trouble. It's to the point all the staff knows me by my first name and the sounds I make when I cry! They all are more than lovely, and have taken great care of me. He is so willing to work with his patients; I don't think I would have been able to get through this experience without him to baby me through it! His staff always is so happy, sweet, and sincere! They are very timely, always call back ASAP, and are just great all around. If I ever have to get anything else done, this is my place for sure! read more

I tried to get my son to see the oral surgeon who performed my surgery years ago only to find out he is now retired. Dr. Perkins came highly recommend from our dentist Dr. R. Butcher. The concern and attention that was given during the consultation clinched the deal. My 18 year old son had all four wisdom teeth removed at once and Dr. Perkins and his staff were excellent. My son had some mild nausea the first night and hasn't complained of any pain since. When we came back in for the post-op visit the week after the surgery again we were greeted by friendly staff members. I wish more health care providers were as attentive to their patients as Dr. Perkins and his staff. If anyone ever needs a oral surgeon Dr. Perkins will be at the top my list. read more

Dr. Perkins did an implant on both my wife and myself. He did an excellent job and was very conscientious to get the implants in the correct location between the adjacent teeth and be in substantial bone for maximum success. He answered any questions we had and explained the treatment in detail and in lay terms. His staff, front and back office, were very helpful, kind, and thorough. We had many appointments during both procedures and never waited too long either in the reception room or in the treatment rooms. read more
