Two words: Lobster. Tail. We'd already eaten four meals before our dinner at Stevenson's, so my family of four started with two appetizers and four rolls. We had the sushi pizza, lobster tail dynamite, Stevenson's roll spicy tuna furikake roll, shipwreck roll, and black rock roll. I thought all of the rolls were pretty average, though I did think the namesake roll was especially tasty. The lobster tail dynamite, however, was OUT OF THIS WORLD. It was so good that we flagged down our waitress to order another one despite the fact that our stomachs were bursting. This is not your traditional lobster tail; the tail is also stuffed with scallops and crab--resulting in super tender and delicious meat--and covered in delicious sauce, mushrooms, and onions. Absolutely unforgettable. Ask for an outdoor table. The Grand Hyatt is such a lovely resort, and the view is beautiful. read more

Had a gorgeous sunset dinner out on the balcony, overlooking shipwreck beach...here at Stevenson's Library. I ordered some sake/salmon/sushi and it was the freshest i have ever had. I also ordered a tropical roll, which is tuna and avocado inside and mango and salmon on top...and that was really really good. it was oh so fresh. james ordered a rainbow roll and a poke. i tried the poke and it too was really fresh and good. it is pretty pricey-[ i think my two glasses of wine was the most expensive part of the tab]---but for the super freshness and the amazing view, it is completely worth it. read more

Bar has a great atmosphere. There's no hostess to seat you. Our server Jeff was awesome! Patio is great spot to enjoy dinner. Food is barely acceptable and over priced. Being from L.A. we must be spoiled. We had high expectations from all the Yelp reviews and we were disappointed as soon as we looked at the menu. Then it was worse when we tasted the Honolulu roll. Big eye tuna was too fatty, tempura crunchies were like rice crispies on steroids and the sweet sauce was not complimentary. We've never sent food back before and we did today. Didn't even have faith that the rainbow roll would be good. Stick with the Nigiri but even then the freshness is questionable. read more

Stevenson's isn't that great. Stevenson's is full of hotel guests that don't realize they need a car in Kauai to get around. Once they realize they need a car, it's too late. That's the worst part of this place - it can get full of people who have a tendency to be pushy. Traditional tourist that won't leave the hotel grounds. Want to play pool? Yea right - someone will knock you over to play in front of you. The drinks? overpriced. Sushi on weekends? No better (and more $) then the Dolphin down the road. So yes, if you are going to Hyatt, come here so there isn't a wait elsewhere. read more

Good sushi, Okay service. The location is outstanding with fabulous ocean views. The menu is a bit pricy but worth it for the quality sushi you receive. I went with a non-sushi eater and they were accommodating by providing a menu from their other restaurant and brining it to him. Overall great, but not impressed with the wait staff. For my birthday November 11 I have decided to try this sushi restaurant . Around 4pm I called the restaurant to make a reservation and I was informed the restaurant didn't take reservation but first come first served. When arrived about 7pm I was asked if I had a reservation I said when called I was told you didn't take reservations! They were surprised I have accepted to check in I was told the first opening will take 45 minutes after 30 minutes I check in and was invited to go to my table. My dinner was a great success I had the Chef sushi menu which was excellent I had a good time ,my son had Black Rock Roll was delicious, Chef's Sashimi Plate was best I ever had before, my grandson had Lobster Dynamite and loved it . Great view, great service. Be sure to get here right at 6pm when they open (actually 5:45) as the tables outside with views fill up FAST. We got a lot of angry looks from people who came at 6 and had to sit inside. Cocktails are $14 which are steep but normal for this place. We did not stay at the hotel, but came to visit. Has a great selection of high end wines and whiskey's, but its $$$$. We did not try the sushi but the reviews look like it is great. read more

Came here with my sister and her team from work for an offsite celebratory dinner- so delicious and unique! The sushi was very fresh and the drinks were strong. We stayed for a few hours, happily eating sushi, drinking, and enjoying the lovely library ambiance. The desserts were also SO GOOD. read more

This was probably the worst sushi experience I have ever had. I ordered the Eel and Avadaco Roll. To start with I have never seen a cut roll that was at least three inches in diameter. When I asked the sushi chef how am I supposed to eat it, he asked me if I would like him to cut the pieces in half, which he did. The pieces were still too big to eat. There was almost no eel and no avadaco in the roll. I don't even know what one ingredient was. I think it might have been a chunk of boiled egg. I ate two cut pieces of the roll and pushed it aside. When the hostess came by I asked her for the bill. She saw my plate with almost the entire roll of sushi untouched. She didn't even inquire why I hadn't eaten it. I have eaten sushi for many years and was looking forward to eating here. I definitely would not recommend eating here. read more

There is a scent of deep mahogany, leather binding and long ago smoked cigars in this bar named after Robert Louis Stevenson who visited Kauai in his twilight before passing into the great beyond. He was said to enjoy the occasional Green Fairy and sometimes a nice rum punch served In a carved out coconut shell as if drinking from the hollowed out and discarded skull from a cannibal feast. It is also rumored that Neil Armstrong frequented this juke joint regaling willing young nymphets with tales of moon landings and craters of gold doubloons. This Thursday night saw a local band, Greenstone Project, kicking out the jams; covering Hall & Oates, Stevie Wonder and Santana. They even accepted a request of my favorite island song "Molokai Slide". Talking to the singer later I found he competed in a battle of the bands with the guys who first sang it back in the day. This band was made up from guys who tour with other groups all over the West Coast and like to jam together when they can. As far as the bar itself, all I can say is they make Mai Tais stronger than Lou Ferigno. Plus, it's prime territory for cougar hunting. read more

They were busy. It was late evening. They were short on staff. All of the above made a perfect storm... for poor service. We sat at a table in the bar area for more than 5 min w/ no server in sight. Then we moved to the outdoor patio and took over a recently-vacated table and tried to flag down a waiter. We eventually got the attention of a table bus person. A waiter arrived a few minutes later and took our drink order. 10 min later the drinks arrived and we ordered some miso soup and sushi. More than 20 minutes later the soup arrived. Another 10 minutes and the sushi arrived. The staff was polite and friendly, but the service delay was unacceptable. We're staying at the hotel, so we'll probably visit again. Well this was certainly one of the worst experiences I've had in Kauai. We heard from people who only stay in resorts that this was a good bar, and I regret taking their opinion seriously. Worst cucumber martini I've had in my life. Truly uninspired seared ahi. It was so bad, we didn't want to stay for a second drink or hop on over to Tidepools for dinner. At this point, I would much rather spend my money on food I KNEW was good. The best part was when we were quietly walking around the pool/beach area, as our server told us to do, and were approached by a security guard asking if we were staying at the resort. When we said we were just walking around, he grunted rudely at us and said "we arrest people for going into the pool and we have this whole area monitored on cameras, in case you were thinking about it." Um, okay. Noted. We weren't dressed for the pool, nor standing near one, but okay. Also, creepy. As far as Stevenson's Library, I have no problem spending ridiculously high prices for food when it's worth it. This was not. This seemed designed for people who weren't leaving the resort and didn't realize that there was a ton of better options on the island available to them. The prices charged for this place in proportion to the unimpressive quality of the food earns this a very disappointed one star. I'll definitely be mentioning this entire experience to friends, colleagues, and family who frequent Kauai a lot. read more

My wife and I were celebrating our honeymoon here at the Grand Hyatt and decided to try Stevenson's based on the online reviews. We were not disappointed. We showed up much earlier than our reservations, but were still seated promptly. Our waiter Jeff was very nice and attentive. We ordered the Stevenson, Honolulu, and Black Rock Maki rolls and they were amazing. Being from New York, we appreciate great sushi and this was top notch. Our cocktails were great, I got the pineapple thai'd and my fiancé got the lychee martini (the martini was better). Our dessert was fantastic as well, definitely go with the tiramisushi it was so good. To top it all off we returned to our room the following night to a bottle of Rose gifted to us by the Stevenson, with a note from our waiter congratulating us on our honeymoon. We had our first dinner at Stevenson's the first night we arrived to the Hyatt and had to go back the 2nd night. I am sure we will do at least one more dinner with them during our stay. We are from California and had great sushi there but have to say this is one of our favorite sushi restaurants. The food seemed super fresh and very delicious. Our favorite was the seared ahi tuna and the lobster dynamite. The staff is very kind, attentive and hospitable. We were a party of 3: myself, my husband and my 6 years old son. The chef went out of his way the first night to offer my son a desert and the 2nd night a very cute shrimp roll. We highly recommend this restaurant for its great ambiance, friendly staff and great food. read more

Sat down at 9:10 and it took 15 minutes to get a server over to table and she immediately says HURRY TO ORDER kitchen closes in 5 minute so. Edamame came out but we had no silverware, no napkins and no soy sauce cups. Ordered mango martini and got a Limey Martini. Sent it back and I swear all they did was put mango in the lime one. Yuck. 1 California roll 1 shrimp tempura roll 1 martini and 1 wine and bill was $72!!!!! I don't mind paying high price but price did not match service at all. We are staying at Grand Hyatt so one night I thought to try out Stevenson's. Really nice decor in the restaurant. I ordered eel and avocado roll to start with, and that's what I decided to end with ultimately. The roll was so big, packed with rice, very little fish, falls apart before I've even put it in my mouth. Not what I would expect for a restaurant that charges $$$$ for something basic. I would not recommend if great japanese food is what you're looking for. read more

The sushi here is not very good. My fiancé came here for some variety while staying at the Grand Hyatt. Most on-site restaurants serve the same food, with Stevenson's being one of the exceptions. The setting is nice. If you can get a spot on the patio overlooking the ocean, it's a good spot to enjoy dinner. They don't take reservations, so it's first come first served. The sushi was not authentic, with the rolls having too much sauce and crab mix etc. The fish didn't tast particularly fresh either, considering being in Hawaii. We live in the desert (AZ) and find better sushi there! read more

Not a very library like atmosphere and not very Hawaiian either . . . if it had been anywhere else but on an island, I probably would have given it at least three stars, but it had no "aloha" feel whatsoever. And as far as library goes, the quiet one expects from such an establishment was anything but with an intrusively loud band playing in the back. Not my cup of tea . . . But . . . Fridays through Mondays they have sushi on the menu, so keeping up with my fish at every meal trend, I thought this would be the perfect place . . . right on the resort property. The sushi and the sashimi were fresh and delicious but for what you received, it is so overpriced. We ate our initial orders and split. If you're looking for atmosphere, the real stunner is the Sea View Terrace a few short steps away. read more

It was $20 for a plate of 5 when you can buy the entire box of like 30 for that same price and make it yourself including using the sauce from the box. You can go to Kim Chee#9 and get possibly the best shrimp tempura on the island with a plate of rice and homemade dipping sauce for $18.95, and it's crispy on the outside and the shrimp is not mush on the inside. Get almost anything else on this menu and you will be impressed. Anything with the shrimp tempura will leave you disappointed. read more

Perhaps we should have walked out but I was hungry. They were out of hamachi sashimi was is my favorite and it kind of went down hill from there. The local poke had no taste and the rock and roll sushi looked like it had been out partying all night. Sushi is a work of art and the sushi chefs were not feeling it that day. The best roll was the Tropical Salmon and it was amazing. The server was gracious and the manager was great too, so I am giving an extra star for them. Went out for an early birthday celebration and this place was great! It was my first time & the atmosphere is just amazing! It's got an amazing view and I love the concept. We sat at a table and ordered a little of everything. The Edamame & butterfish for appetizers were good fillers. The sushi (the tempura, Stevenson's and the rock n roll) were delicious! We could barely eat them all! I did save some room for dessert and ordered the Tiramisushi. After dinner, we sat on the couches by the "library" and just drank and hung out the rest of the night. I absolutely loved it! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone and everyone! It is a little pricy, but you can get a drink and a roll for under $30! read more

My husband and I ordered the miso soup (eh, pretty typical), the carpaccio (delish), the spicy tuna temaki (eh), the black rock roll (AMAZING), and the Amakihi roll (delish). The black rock roll was one of the best rolls I've ever had. The blackened ahi stole the show. I could have just eaten that. My husband liked the Amakihi roll the most. It was super delish as well. Not so great: the spicy tuna temaki. It's $12 and really just consists of some spicy tuna in the seaweed taco. Just kinda boring and a little tasteless (although its still delicious tuna). Overall great food. Main reason for the 4 stars and not 5 is we did wait a long time in between the server checking on us. We were seated and ordered drinks and waited probably 7-10 minutes for the drinks. Then waited probably another 5 minutes to order. But if you aren't in a rush (we weren't), then still worth going for the food! read more
