We have been customers for about 15 years and always have recommended the skinny, crispy french fries... until now. About 2 years ago, they went away from their best-in-class fries and brought them back a few months later. They have just repeated the experience in the fall of 2019 with lousy, mushy fries for who-knows-what reason. So I've been going to Steve's deli pretty much my entire life. I will start with the positive. The corned beef is very good and the bread, bagels they have are very fresh! We went for breakfast yesterday around 10am the place was basically empty. Took a while for us to get a waitress over and when we did she was not paying much attention. 3/4 items we ordered came out relatively quickly but the last order came out over 5 min later. I had the corned beef hash (something I often order from Steve's) this time it was a very large serving but the quality was bad. Also my eggs were rock hard and barely warm. Not great! I realized that I wanted a water and the waitress asked us if we were ready for our check before I was able to even order my water. Saw our waitress twice place was empty. She also spilled water, coffee and food onto my girlfriends purse and leg on three separate occasions not once did the waitress notice. The food is good but yesterday the food was sub-par and the service was even worse. read more

The prices at this restaurant are outrageous. We ordered potato latkes and it was over six dollars for a very small latke so $36 for 6 small latkes and they give you a thimble of applesauce. When I spoke to the owner, he was very rude, and said that this was the going price for latkes. However he could not name one restaurant that had a similar price. The Stage deli and Embers deli are less money and the latkes are bigger and better. When I mentioned these restaurants, he said that his restaurant was superior. I am such a foodie but will never go back to Steve's Deli. My friend fed her 1 year old in a high chair and, of course the child threw some food on the ground. What child that age does not? The owner came up and stated "would you people do that in your home?" as she saw how old the child was . "Are you not going to clean that up? I'm probably rating this higher than I should. The food is good, which is four stars, but you have to deal with some other annoyance if you eat here. The chicken and tuna salads are great, especially their fat free versions (really). I love their sweet and sour soup, but hate the price for the tiny cup and high price for it. The sandwiches are good and a nice size, a wide variety of salads and some unique breakfast items (like the breakfast omelet "pizzas"). If you come here you'll have to deal with a somewhat annoying clientele and some attitude from the waiters and management. I almost feel like the management feels entitled that people are coming there. The space is small, there's usually a wait during peak times and they charge you for EVERYTHING. There's even a sign in the kitchen (on the way to the bathroom that you can see) that says something like, "Give the customer any thing but charge." Steve's has always been a favorite of my family's since I was little. This place has been in business for what seems like forever, and when somewhere is open that long, it must be doing something right! I feel like I enjoyed the place more when I was little and wasn't worried about watching my weight, but some great things on the menu are the chicken noodle soup with the bagel cracker (I know this sounds basic but you have to try it), the corned beef sandwich, and I really love their shoestring fries. Also their lox platter is fantastic. Don't leave without grabbing some bagels (they're fantastic, my dad always brings them home). Also make sure you get a Dr. Brown's soda to round out the Jewish Deli experience. I'm only giving them 4 stars because their healthy options aren't nearly as tasty, but at least they're on the menu! I get the Telegraph salad chopped with turkey off the bone and FF raspberry vinigarette dressing (good portion, pretty tasty). read more

The Reuben sandwich on challah bread is what I come here for. Super clean, not fatty and deliciously cured. Huge portions which I ended up splitting with my hubby. I'd give it 5 stars for the sandwich alone, but the service is unique. I felt like I was living back in NYC with the waitress' sass and attitude which threw me off. I'm use to attitude in a cultural context (NYC snippy, surly) but in Michigan? I will go back again but only order carry out so I don't have to deal with the unfriendly, NYC-snotty attitude. Never know when this place is open... Update your website. It has the wrong hours. And you have two different times for hours on your door. As much money as this place makes they can afford to update a website and have the correct hours on the door. Nice to have a place like Steve's around. It has a few vegetarian choices and plenty for the meat eaters. There are many deli's around but I try and support the businesses that have been around and support our community. We've had service vary but overall have had some pretty good servers. I've read some of the other reviews about ownership and management and that's a shame if true. I haven't had any problems and if I do I'll update this review quickly. Actually I've seen some customers who were pretty rude to the servers. As always it would help if the servers knew something about good vegetarian or vegan options. It's pricey for a sandwich but it's a nice place to get something light or some sides. Friends have liked the egg salad sandwich with the delicious potato chips as well as the veggie sandwich and the veggie burger. I liked the veggie reuben minus cheese. It's nice to have healthy options like the lavash wrap. There's a lot on the menu but if you want to keep it simple for about $4 you have some good options such as hot cereal, two eggs any style, a fresh fruit salad, OR a side of hash browns (make sure they aren't cooked in lard for you vegetarians). That's a pretty good set of options on any menu. read more

This place can be overwhelming! There is stuff everywhere you almost don't know what to get! They have fresh bread and bagels on racks in the front. At the register there are all kinds of snacks you can pick up.. things like popcorn, brownies(fudge like huge slabs and so good!), pretzels, chocolate covered Oreos, rice krispy treats etc, they also sell beef jerky for 99 cents a piece. They are delicious, a little on the spicy side but so good! They have an area with some pick up and go items.. salads etc. they have a hot bar with atleast 20 items! Ranging from pastas, meatballs, stuffed cabbage with turkey etc, they have a whole bar of cold Salads and pastas! They menu is quite extensive. Their sandwiches are HUGE! The bread is fresh on the sandwich, but I used a fork to eat a lot of it.. I don't know how people eat it! But the California was good.. its got turkey with turkey bacon and avacado. It comes with 3 slices of pickles. They tomato mozzarella salad is good too! Note that this is not a cheap place! If you are looking to just spend max $10 do not come here.. 1/2 a pint of the tomato mozzarella costed $7! There is a lot of room to eat there and since the weather is better they have seating outside as well! Their cakes are HUGE as well! But they have a lot of variety! read more

The overstuffed sandwiches are really good, albeit pretty pricey. They're nice for a treat now and again. The actual wait staff & counter people are incredibly patient & kind (they really have no choice, since the shift manager / manager? is perhaps one of the rudest, most condescending people I've ever encountered). He let people cut in line, was disrespectful to his staff in front of costumers, was unapologetic to people waiting for food. But my grandparents have been gone a while now, and it's not the same. But the restaurant is great. It is very pricey though. First I must say this: About 6 months ago, I shared an order of blintzes (3 to an order), for what I believe was priced around $10.00-$12.00, for the 1 order. I thought this was priced somewhat reasonably. And the blintzes were really good. Last Saturday, December 30th, my mother and I were in the mood for the blintzes, so we headed over there........ Here is our experience: We arrived at the restaurant and saw that they renovated it; having booths and new light fixtures instead of the small tables once in place. We were seated and then looked at the menu. It became very clear..... the customers will be paying off this expense VERY QUICKLY. The prices were unbelievable. A huge increase from when I had been there 6 months ago. Again, this was not a small increase, it was a huge increase to the point of being unreasonable and insulting. Side note: The waitress could have been friendlier in general. Ultimately, she will be making great money with this huge increase in the prices. I am thinking she should have had a BIG smile on her face. Remember those blintzes I mentioned earlier in this review from 6 months ago.....Well now with the increase, 1 blintz is $7.99, and a full order consisting of 3 blintzes, is now $20.99. We could not believe it. And we are NOT CHEAP by any means, as we are always 20%+ tippers.....but this price was crazy. Hence, on principle, we did not order the blintzes! Well then, we thought we would have some soup. Price for a cup: $5.99, and a bowl is now $7.99. Really? As we were pretty hungry, (and after having seen the price), we reluctantly ordered 2 cups of soup, and 1 cup of coffee for my mother. When we saw how small the cups of soup were for the price of $5.99 (in all reality, $6.00), I told the waitress we did not want those, and to bring us 2 bowls of soup. The bowl was larger, but still not worth $7.99 (in reality......$8.00). It's soup, not gold. When the waitress brought the bowls of soup, my mother told me she probably could not eat all of that soup. I had the waitress take her bowl away, and I asked her to bring back an empty CUP. I poured soup from my bowl into the empty cup for my mother. That is how we had our soup for $8.00, from the one bowl. With how crazy their prices were on the menu, we thought we would probably get hit with a "sharing" charge for the soup. I hope they don't get any ideas if they read this. Uh-oh! For those that have eaten at Steve's Deli, everyone knows that they put that really thin and very HARD bagel slice (with small pieces of old looking melted cheese on it) around the spoon handle that is placed directly into the soup when they serve it. It's kind-of like a dog biscuit. And don't you think if people are spending that kind of money for a cup or bowl of soup, they deserve some BREAD AND BUTTER. But NO....no bread. I feel certain if we asked for bread, they would have charged us for it. The reason I believe this is because.... for example, on the menu it states.... if you want a salad with all Romaine lettuce, they charge an additional $3.00.... or if one wants a salad chopped, then one has to pay another $1.00 for that... Come On.... Really? Who wouldn't feel completely taken advantage of in this restaurant? Ultimately, after sharing our 1 bowl of soup, and still hungry, we left Steve's, and went down the hall to The Gallery restaurant. Looking at their menu, they had very reasonable and FAIR prices. As we complained about the prices at Steve's Deli to our waitress, she told us that many people have been complaining, and like us, they leave Steve's and come to their restaurant. Those customers said they refuse to go back to Steve's Deli. We won't go back either. This outrageous increase in their prices reflects an arrogance which we will not support. read more

This was an awful dining experience. My wife, brother in-law, his girlfriend, my wife's cousin, and I all went to Steve's Deli for lunch at 1:30 PM yesterday. We had to get our own menus, and I had to ask one of the men walking around the restaurant aimlessly, "Excuse me, sir? Can you have someone come take our order. We have been waiting for 20 minutes now." The waitress came over to take our order after the kind man asked her to help us. When he talked to her, we over-heard her say, "I'm sorry, I've got like 500 things I am doing right now and the credit card machine is broken." If the credit card machine was broken, then she could have communicated that with us. The odd thing is that I was able to pay for my meal with my debit card. The waitress was nice, but I don't understand how the table for two sitting next to us was able to get menus, waters, order their food, and get their food before we were even able to order. And the worst part was they were seated five minutes after us. In addition to that, this was the worst Ruben sandwich I have ever had. The cook left the cheese and sauerkraut on the flat top grill for too long, so it became a burnt mess. So I had to remove the corned beef and eat that without the bread, sauerkraut, cheese, and thousand island dressing. That's the other thing, there was almost no dressing on this sandwich. To make matters worse, I watched multiple waitresses arguing with each other on the floor by the tables where customers were sitting. In addition to that, my wife bought a rice crispy treat from the bakery and the girl working behind the counter seemed pissed off that she had to help us. She didn't say hello, good-bye, or have a nice day. I'm never coming back to this place. This is an example of poor management. Fast forward to this evening - after years of living out east, I come home and as a ceremonial first of many metro Detroit Sunday dinners, my wife asks me to bring back some great deli. Sadly I passed Star and made my way north up Telegraph to Steve's. Now I've been to Steve's countless times, so in my opinion their bar is set high given their own standards. Twice since coming home and I am disappointed to report they aren't reaching the bar. This evening I approached the carry out counter and put in my meat order. For some reason the man taking my order gave us attitude. Lean corned beef was met with an eye roll. Turkey pastrami? A snicker. When I got to a loaf of bread I got a "We don't got it." Really? You don't have bread? Pretty hard to make a sandwich then eh? I could forgive the rudeness if the food justified it, but besides their incredible chicken noodle matzo ball soup, they have nothing to stand on. At least not on Sundays. The corned beef was bland. The turkey pastrami looked as though it were sitting out for a while. Given the price tonight, I was simply not happy. Steve's Deli used to rank somewhere between Star (The best of the best in metro Detroit) and Deli Unique. As of this evening though, they need to do a lot to earn my patronage back. read more
