In a competitive barbeque region, styles switch stands apart to me as the best in the area. Pork ribs with a great dry rub, immense beef ribs that are super rich and tasty. Tender brisket with a nice pink smoke ring on it. Potato salad and beans were maybe the best things there but hard to say because everything is so good. I had family in town for lunch today and was very excited to take them here, since I remembered it being so good. I don't know if it was just an off day, or if this is the new direction, but I was quite disappointed. I normally go to blacks bbq when I am in Austin but they were closed due to ice. My friend wanted to try Stiles so off we went. I ordered brisket and sausage and two sides. The brisket was good but blacks blows them out of the water. The spicy sausage was amazing. Probably best I ever had. I had two sides. Mac and cheese and corn casserole. I would not get either again. Been looking forward to the Cedar park store opening. I was a little disappointed in the food. Brisket was good, sausage was just OK as were the ribs. Beans were dry and bland. Bread was dry. Top 5 BBQ Writing this after my second trip to Stiles. My first trip was maybe 4-5 months ago and in my opinion, they have made some strong improvements in the meats served. I told the guy who runs the place and he was very humble saying that they continue to try and improve on a daily basis. Here were my thoughts on meat, sides, service and atmosphere. Meats: I ordered some fatty brisket, jalapeno sausage, a couple of pork ribs and a few slices of turkey. The fatty brisket was honesty some of the best I have ever had...simply amazing. Such a great peppery bark and extremely tender. The jalapeno sausage was great with a nice snap...on my last trip I had the Stiles sausage, which was just as good although I like the jalapeno a little better. The pork ribs were very good on both trips. I only had the turkey on my second trip and it was pretty good. Sides: I had potato salad (mustard based) and beans. I personally like this style of potato salad...reminds me of Rudy's, which for me is a good thing. The beans were standard fare. You don't come for the sides but they do a good job in this area. Service: Great folks here. I can't recall the name of the guy that runs the place but super nice, came up to me after I had finished eating and just chatted with me about bbq for a while. He also was catering for a large party so went out of his way to stop a couple of times to chat. All the folks were nice, had a smile on their face and took good care of you. Atmosphere: Cool little place. You walk up to the stainless steel looking door and the smell of smoke just forces you to inhale deeply. When you get inside, it looks more like a nice sports bar than a BBQ joint and I don't mean that in a bad way. Several big screen TVs to watch sports if you want. I could see this being a great place to watch college football on Saturday and enjoy some bbq. Another interesting side note from my perspective is that it is located in the Violet Crown Plaza (at least I think that is the name) in north Austin, which is the same area that Dazed and Confused was filmed. One of my favorite movies - the Emporium, paint spill on O'Banion (Ben Affleck's character) and Centennial scenes were all shot right there. Fun area. Overall: This place is in my Top 5. My colleagues and I were at a conference today and were tired off sandwich shops and salads. Someone suggested BBQ and off we went....who knew? Yelp found me another gem and I was the winner of both great food and their praise for finding this place. As to the food, I don't think that you can find any better BBQ in Austin. We didn't have to wait in an incredible line and were served with prompt, courteous service. The quality of people here is good. Lots of professionals today. The brisket was solid. I really thought it was of a great quality of meat. It wasn't OMG, melt in your mouth like Louis Mueller's but was better than just about every BBQ joint I've been to. It was impressive and really good. I was tremendously surprised to find this good of brisket on North Lamar. Way better than Rudy's or The Salt Lick. The bbq is some of the best in town. Their brisket is very tasty and has great consistency. The ribs are fantastic and if you fancy it, try the pork tenderloin! Wow. The side dishes offer a good variety and mostly pretty good. I didn't like the slaw, but I don't like mustard slaw. They have an excellent sauce and I highly recommend this spot for local brews and great food! Went to dinner here tonight with a friend. It was our first time having Texas barbecue. We both ordered three meat plates brisket chicken and ribs pork ribs. We both had the moist brisket and loved it. The chicken was flavorful but I did not like the texture of the skin. It was too chewy and not very edible. And the ribs were excellent as well I would say. The barbecue sauce was different than what I'm used to. It will had a more watery texture whereas I am used to a more pasty barbecue sauce. I went in today solo just after opening to see what Style Switch was all about. I ordered the beef rib plate with an extra quarter lbs of fatty brisket. My sides were spicy slaw and tomato and cucumber salad with feta. I didn't plan on eating all of this... but I'll get to that in a second. The brisket was perfectly most and everything i could ask for in a brisket. The sides were great and light to help guide my meat binge to its final destination. But the beef rib. I honestly don't know the appeal of this place. It's always busy, listed as top by Texas Monthly and seemingly has a reputation. All of that and I walked away thinking it was mediocre at best. Sure they have lots of sides. Sure they have good beer. But man, I really wasn't impressed by their meat. My gold standard when getting BBQ is brisket and sausage. I'm a pretty easy to please guy but I just didn't get it. I'd say with all honesty, you'd get better meat at HEB at Mueller. I'd also rather get Rudy's than come here. Maybe it's personal preference I dunno. I just don't get the appeal. If someone brought it to me, I'd eat it. But this is not a place that I want to go to nor is it somewhere I'd take out of towners. read more

One of the girls I was with is actually vegetarian and even she was happy with the side dishes. Just wanted to give a shout out to Stiles Switch for not only having some of THE BEST BBQ in Austin but for also having the kindest, most sincere customer service. I picked up two family packs last week to take to a friend in Dallas who is not on the best of health. Not only did Kevin, the GM, offer to carry my carefully packed giant box of BBQ and sides to my car, he provided a few desserts on the house. Totally blown away by his gesture of kindness. The world is kind of a messy place right now, but if we take the time to really listen and take care of one another, it can totally brighten things up. Been here a few times with family that likes it, but their food is ALWAYS lukewarm so you eat it cold. Tonight I said the turkey doesn't look good yet other plates did so instead of offering me a new cut the woman behind the counter said "it will all be the same" so we waited to get a refund and my mother's food got even more cold. I enjoyed the fact that Dazed and Confused was filmed at this location when it was a shopping center! I ordered the 2 meat platter. I chose brisket and spicy sausage. The sausage was good and the brisket good as well. the Spices on the brisket were very good. The meat was a little dry but my sisters brisket was better. Not all brisket is cut the same.
