I went with the 3-meat plate, which includes three types of meat ( pound each), two sides, and two slices of bread. Although delivered some great BBQ, but not everything hit the mark. You pay at the counter and seat yourself so there's basically no service outside of them handing you your food. I got the two meat plates with two sides and a banana pudding. The sides were good but the bbq itself was kinda bad. So bad that I took most of the meat home and gave it to my dog the next morning. The brisket and pork ribs were both dry and the pork ribs were especially salty. I'm not sure if they had an off day but the people at my table agreed that the brisket were dry and pork ribs disappointing. I choose beef brisket and smoked turkey breast as my meats, and Corn Casserole and Serrano Glazed Brussel Sprouts as my sides. I elected for the complimentary onions, pickles, and white bread slices. They had a nice selection beer, but I had no idea what I wanted. Luckily there was person behind the counter who pretty much played beer match maker, and he was spot on. You have Franklin BBQ founded in 2009, LA BBQ in 2012 (which was JMueller BBQ before that), Micklewaith in 2012, and here on North Lamar, a true staple that started back in 2011 is Stiles Switch BBQ. You likely have seen this building before in the cult movie classic "Dazed & Confused" showing The Emporium where the cast used it as a poolhall during the movie. Stiles Switch is serving up true Texas style BBQ worthy of being in the Texas Monthly top 50 list. They have 2 other locations in Cedar Park & Dripping Springs, but here in north Austin is the original place. The hours run from Tuesday - Sunday 11am - 8pm located on North Lamar, near the Texas DPS building. The menu consists of a typical bbq list of brisket, pork ribs, beef ribs, turkey, sausage, pork belly burnt ends, and smoked chicken. The restaurant will serve random specials such as their smoke wings, smoked brisket burger, or other menu specials. A great time of year to visit is during December when they host 12 days of Christmas specialty menu. You can order anything by the pound, order a specialty sandwich, or get the meat plate with two sides. There is a large variety of beer selection to choose from along with a soda machine with Dr Pepper and Big Red. For sides there is a typical list of baked beans, mac & cheese, corn casserole, cole slaw, potato salad and others. You have a wide variety of dessert options such as peach cobbler, banana pudding, chocolate pudding or cake. I ordered the two meat plate with brisket, ribs, corn casserole, and mac n cheese. The portions are huge and bold with flavor. The brisket has a heavy smoke bark, well trimmed fat ratio, and strong post oak flavor to it. I felt the brisket was cooked well, but seemed a bit over cooked from the texture and tenderness of the meat. Pork ribs had a strong bark with a tangy peppery sauce flavor to them. The ribs felt also more cooked, wasn't a soft tender peel off the bone, but it had a strong zesty pork smoked flavor to it. The ribs had a solid bark and seasoning, but just were not as tender from other spots I have had. The sides were very large and well prepared. Corn casserole was cooked well balanced where the mac n cheese had a basic soft shell pasta with a lighter flavor cheese that was not heavy feeling at all. For a two meat plate, the portion sizes are huge to where I didnt even have any room for dessert. The Texas Monthly top 50 bbq list is considered by many to be a pinnacle chart to show that you are one of the best places to go in the state. Stiles Switch bbq has been delivering solid bbq for over a 15 year span. The service here is friendly, efficient, and gives a true Texas style feel in their restaurant. Prices are very fair for the amount of food you get on a platter. We went for the 3 meat + 2 sides platter, added an additional side, and the server gave us a free portion of one side to taste. Here are the meats and sides in order of preference below. Meats: - Jalapeño Cheddar Sausage: I'm just as surprised as you are that the sausage made it at the top of my meats list, but here we are. The sausage was juicy and flavored perfectly. The jalapeño cheddar kind is a must! - Beef Brisket: had to make it to at least the middle of the pack. It was seasoned nicely and worked well with the provided bbq sauces. It wasn't the juiciest brisket I have had, definitely not the melting in your mouth kind, but was not dry either. - Pork ribs: was a bit underwhelming to be honest. You really get two very thin ribs and are working to scrape the measly amount of meat from the bones. I generally love ribs, but if we only got these ribs as our choice for the 3 meats, we would have left severely hungry. Sides: - Glazed Brussels Sprouts: this side stole the show as the best thing I tasted on the entire platter. It was perfectly sweet from the sauce, salty, and crispy. I was very underwhelmed by this food and considering the price a bit upset. I paid around $90 to get 2 3-meat platters and a peach cobbler. I was very excited given the reviews. Let me start by saying the peach cobbler was very good. However, everything else was less than ok. Ribs and brisket were dry and overly salty. Macaroni had zero flavor. Cole slaw had an odd taste, and my friend said they didn't enjoy the pinto beans. This is just my experience and maybe I got a bad batch, who knows! But not sure I'd pay the price for this place again. read more

I stop by every year when visiting my family in Austin. We all love the brisket, it's so phenomenal. An incredible blend of fat that is rendered and absorbed the smoke flavor and meat that melts in your mouth. It is truly the best brisket I've had. We also got the pulled pork this year and really enjoyed that, although a touch dry. The St Louis ribs were okay, the pepper rub is just so strong, that sad the ribs are smoked very well.
