I wanted to love the au gratin potatoes, but found them flavorless and overcooked with a watery cheese sauce. I believe the seasonal vegetable was purple cabbage, but I do know that I liked it a lot. My friend really enjoyed the Mac n cheese and prime rib. The best end to the meal was the carrot cake! It's multiple layers, does not have raisins, and is amazing! Not too sweet, just a perfect sweet delight-and enough for 3 people, or 3 really individual good times! We actually requested that it be split 3 ways, which they gladly did for us! Slightly more modern and less stuffy take on a traditional steakhouse. The menu is predictable with a few unique appetizers. We quite enjoyed the tuna stack which was recommended by our server. It's nice to start off with something lighter and it's quite sweet thanks to all the mango. The whiskey shrimp on toast was also better than expected. The shrimp are plump and not overcooked, the sauce is rich and flavorful. We then waited quite a while to eventually find out that our ticket got lost in the kitchen and they never started our order. When we finally got our tomahawk steak, we weren't even hungry anymore. The steak itself was very good though, perfectly cooked to medium rare with a nice char on the crust, buttery and well seasoned. The brussel sprouts were unremarkable. For dessert, the carrot cake comes as a giant slice, enough to last a whole week. It was good but very sweet. I believe it got comped due to our long wait for the steak. My husband and I went here for our date night and it was amazing! We were early and it wasn't a problem at all they went ahead and sat us and our experience began. Our server was absolutely amazing! He was able to provide suggestions and descriptions of everything we asked about. He was very knowledgeable of the menu. We enjoyed the spinach dip for our appetizer and it came out quickly along with some complimentary biscuits and honey butter. Our entrees were the Bistro chicken and Meatloaf. Both exceeded expectations! For dessert we had the bread pudding with ice cream and caramel sauce. We left full and happy!! We will definitely be returning to this facility! The steaks are dependably high-quality, even unadorned, the appetizers delicious, the mac and cheese THE BEST -- so much so we've taken to bringing it to Friendsgivings -- and the cocktails never disappoint. We were quite disappointed with the service during our recent visit. We had to remind the waitress several times about our requests, and despite asking for the dishes to be served in order--appetizer before the main courses--one of the appetizers was forgotten. When we reminded her, it was brought out, but the main dishes followed almost immediately after, leaving little room to enjoy the meal as intended. The table was also too small to comfortably accommodate all the dishes, a bottle of wine, and four wine glasses, which made the dining experience feel cramped. Unfortunately, the food did not meet our usual expectations either. The quality has declined compared to previous visits--for example, a medium rare steak arrived cooked closer to medium. read more

We love this restaurant. This place is by far one of the best steakhouses in the area. The only thing keeping it from a 5 star is that the turnover of staff seems to be high, so at times you can get inconsistent services. However, the kitchen is very consistent and does not disappoint. We have our go to dishes here for sure: Steak rolls are a must! Think ground steak served in an egg roll. Maybe the best thing on the menu! Center cut filet is solid. I order this nearly every time and the medallion trio is fantastic as well. Sides are smaller meant for the individual. All the potato options are good, but my favorite is the Mac & Cheese. A friend of my that came to the states recently from Germany wanted a steak and we ended up here for dinner last night. It was a last minute decision and I'm so glad that we went! Around 4:30, I made a dinner reservation for 6:15pm and I'm so glad that I did, because the restaurant filled up quickly! The atmosphere is great, as is the service but the food was exceptional! My petite cut filet with blue cheese was probably one the best pieces of meat I've ever had and the au gratin potatoes were amazing as well and thought that the price was very reasonable. My friend got a rib eye which he was very pleased with! We both had cesear salads which tasted great, but I felt like they were a bit pricey...I am very much looking forward to another visit soon! read more

The portions are huge! I've never been to a steakhouse that gives such good portions like this place and I had a lot to take home. I got the cheesesteak egg rolls and the salmon with Mac and cheese and scalloped potatoes as my sides. The egg rolls were cooked well and weren't too hard which I like. They had a nice crispy crunch and came with a good sauce on the side! My entree was good as well but I will say that the salmon had a bit of a fishy scent. Not the typical good smell of salmon that's been cooked but way stronger than I feel like it should have so I didn't finish it and that's why I'm giving this place 4 stars. Went for Lunch, on a beautiful Fall day. The restaurant staff were warm and welcoming, even provided toys for the 5-year old with us. Excellent location, easy parking, beautiful place. The classical modernist design was simple, but elegant and in many places very well done. Had the signature Chicken Biscuit with Mamphis Hot Sauce, the Hong Kong Style Sea Bass, the Prime Rib and a wonderful Shishito Pepper appetizer. All fresh, tasty, and well prepared, with care. Was a little reluctant to order a big cut of Prime Rib for a lunch, probably better fresh cut at Dinner, but it was extremely well prepared. Nice seasoned crust, pink inside, and flavorful. Only great things to say about the Sweet Potato casserole side, would go back for that alone! We also ordered shishito peppers, their infamous steak rolls (our favorite), a ribeye and the scallops that are currently one of their specials. This was our 4th time eating dinner here, and every time we have excellent service and food. The environment is perfect for dinner and doesn't get loud even with the bar located between the 2 dining areas. The bread, salad, appetizers, entrees and dessert have never disappointed. If you like steak, try Stony River Steakhouse in Chapel Hill. The service is excellent, and the food is delicious. It is a little expensive but worth the taste and the service. My son invited us for dinner on a Sunday evening, and we had a great experience. The hostess seated us (six people) at our table precisely at our reservation time. Our server, Nick, greeted us very soon and explained the menu pleasantly after inquiring about our drink orders. I was very impressed by his attention to each person as he approached to get all of our orders. Interestingly, when asked a particular wine-related question and he did not know the response, he immediately said he would get help. He came back with a detailed response and choices. One of the appetizers we shared was Steak Rolls. It was delicious: a crispy shell filled with a delightful spicy content with fantastic aroma and texture. I am sure the Deviled Eggs were delicious, as I noted my grandchildren enjoyed them very much (I have never been a fan of DE.). My choice of entree was Steak Frites, which usually comes with fries on the side. However,comeentree choice was steak frites they accommodated my substitution with a beautifully presented baked potato that was "fully loaded" but not heavy. They served the entrees at a reasonable wait. They had cooked them ideally based on the individual's request. They did an excellent job of cooking my steak medium well. When you go to Stony River Steakhouse, you are served these tasty rolls to snack on while waiting for your entrees. They are so delicious that you should not hesitate to ask for encores. Meh. I have high standards for steak and Stoney River fell a little short. The highlight was the beef spring rolls, a huge portion and nice flavor and tasty. Overall, portions for everything were quite large, but the quality was not top end. It was more of a nice steakhouse chain feel (think Firebirds or Ted's) than top quality beef. The wedge salad was also nice, again two huge wedges, good (albeit a little watery) blue cheese and ample bacon. Ironically, given it is a steakhouse, I found the steak the most mediocre of the dishes. Again, nice size but the ribeye was not particularly tender or tasty. Not bad (and again large) but nothing to write home about. Overall, an okay steakhouse where you are better off with the appetizers and salads than the steak. read more

I came here for a friend's birthday dinner. The service was excellent! If you come to Stoney River, ask for Noor! He was such a patient, funny and very attentive server! He came through with the recommendations for our dinner; everything he recommended was delicious. I will say, we were probably a lot to handle but he didn't seem to have a problem with it! There were a few issues with someone getting the wrong drink (lemon drop mojito instead of a martini) or the sides not matching what was ordered, but he didn't hesitate to go back to the kitchen to get those items corrected. He even gave us complimentary champagne to toast the birthday girl and gave her slice of chocolate cake to take home! I got the spicy margarita and it was good but I wish the salt was all over the rim and not on the side of the glass. I guess it's the new trendy look for margaritas these days but it makes you look pretty awkward licking the side of the glass lol I don't eat a lot of steaks so decided to go with the ribeye steak cooked medium rare with a side of au gratin potatoes. PRO's: Lovely restaurant that's lighting is so dim it will take twenty years off you. The carrot cake is enormous and delicious. Cons: This is a restaurant with cooks, not chefs. Advice: Best not to add raw tomato (with the tag still on) to ahi tuna. Consider cooking your rice, rather than microwaving it. Consider serving the rolls as desert, or better yet, not at all. This is our second time coming to Stoney in the past 2 years and I don't know why we waited that long to return. 10/10!! I would even go as far as 12 or 15 out of 10! Excellent food, quality and service. A little pricy but worth every penny!!! I could cut the steak with a butter knife! Crab was perfect! Everyone at the table cleaned our plates including the dessert. I got a filet Oscar style with the crab and Bernase sauce, asparagus and Gouda Mac & cheese. My other half got a filet with Carmelized onion mashed potatoes and my in laws got a filet with a baked potato. Dessert was carrot cake and Cookie skillet with ice cream. The interior was warm and simple but all felt so elegant, had just the right touches.
