Went in today for breakfast. Ordered the steak & eggs. Med rare steak came out dry as a bone. The owner took 1.80 off of a 20 dollar meal that was inedible. We used to be regulars. We wont be back. We recently had dinner here at their new location in Fruita. It's on the "other"side of I-70, sadly, instead of downtown. It replaced the Kannah Creek brewery that abruptly closed just before Christmas. We greatly enjoyed our meal. We both had prime rib, which was prepared perfectly. It was tender and moist and delicious. The service was great, our server was there when she needed to be, and stayed on top of things. They spent a lot re-doing the bar area, which looks great. However, the rest of the restaurant doesn't have much in the way of ambience, which is a shame, as this could arguably be the best (non-pizza) meal in town. Everything else gets full marks, though...decent parking, great service, very good food, at a good value. We will definitely be back! read more

Very good dining experience. We went there a few years ago and hadn't gone back until October 13, 2022. When one of our friends in our group suggested we go there for our Thursday night get together. We're so glad we did! The food was very good, three of us had the chicken fried steak, which was delicious and very tender. Two other people had the Bunkhouse chicken, also very good. I thought the food was reasonably priced. Our server Chelsea was very friendly and attentive to our table, despite the place starting to get busy. She was great. When we moved here in 2014, we were looking for experiences - and this was one of the first places where we explored. It is located at the north end of the Western Slope Cattlemen's Livestock Auction building. So, you know you are in beef lover's territory. Every time we come here - there are a couple of tables filled with what look - to my eastern eyes - true blue cowboys (retired cowboys - but they do look right at home here). They shoot the breeze for quite a while over quite a few cups of coffee. The decor here is Western. Not kitchy western, though. There is a large stone fireplace that is very welcome in the winter. There is a cowhide or so on the walls. There is also a long list of pies cooked in house. Which gets us to the food. There is a lot of beef served here - breakfast can include country fried steak, grilled steak, prime rib, smoked brisket, a grilled beef patty. Or you can go with sausage, ham or bacon. But beef does seem to be king. PS - if it says smoked, it is smoked right here! When we went back today - we were surprised to find the prices the same or close to those we found in 2014. The portions are large, as you might expect. Steaks are cut large, but thin (which I expected for a cowboy type place - I don't think cowboys eat rare steak). My husband had the Cow Camp Skillet - 2 eggs, chopped brisket, roast potatoes, green chiles, onion, cheese and a biscuit. Good choice! The brisket was very tender and the potato chunks had a bit of a crunch on them. The green chile was spicy and the over easy eggs made a great sauce for it all. I had pancakes which were just fine. But - their wheelhouse is meat and I think that is what you want to eat when you are here. I did have a side of sausage patties that were well spiced and had clearly spent just the right amount of time on the grill. We asked our very friendly waitress, Sammi, about the origin of this restaurant. She said that the stockyards were owned by two men (Jim Brach and Bill Martin) - but the restaurant was owned by Bill Martin and his wife Sheryl. They started the restaurant in 2009 because of their love for all things Western and all thing home cooking. Sounds good to me! read more

I stopped in on my way to Denver from Vegas. The place was very difficult to find. Not much signage or anything at all. For that I was road weary and ready to eat. The decor was pretty cool and the place was pretty vacant as I stopped in just after they had opened. As for the food, I had the chicken fried steak and all the fixings. The steak was a bit on the tough side but the gravy did help. On that the gravy was very thick so I would go only four stars. Overall do not think about passing this place by. If you can find it. Much better than the chain joints that I will not name. read more

I came here last night for dinner, and came again the following morning for breakfast. It was that good. The modern country atmosphere was pleasant and inviting. Service both at the bar and table were excellent. The food is priced right, the restaurant clean, and good for both an intimate night or casual meal. The Sweet Heat martinis we had at the bar before getting to the table were genuinely unique, and a fun start. For dinner we started with the tapaderos, a chicken, cheese green chili fried bites. I had the lamp chop special. Three thick cut lamb chops grilled as best as I have ever had, perfectly medium rare. Served with a warm fennel slaw- delicious and unique. My girlfriend had a 12oz prime rib, requested to be seared and came out perfectly cool pink served with both prepared and fresh horseradish plus au jus. We had a few table sides, creamed spinach, mashed potatoes, all great, the green chili creamed corn was truly memorable. Breakfast the following morning were smothered enchiladas verde and Strayhorn Benedict. Fresh made hollandaise smothered homemade pulled pork and delicate poached eggs. Literally twice the pulled pork you would have expected. You will NOT leave here hungry. My single only regret was ordering the plain grits instead of cheese grits after I saw them on another table. Not a problem though, I'll be back here for many more great meals. read more

We went in for an anniversary dinner looking for a meat and potato meal that was not overly priced. We accomplished this. The waitress was helpful and friendly. We shared the porterhouse pork chop that was perfectly cooked and seasoned (5); it came with green beans, a little too buttered(4), baked potato with ample butter and sourcream (4), and they gave us an extra dinner roll that was actually quite tasty. My husband ordered the side house salad that came with the meal(3.5) because he does not care for the arugula mix, he prefers iceberg/romaine; irregardless, it was fresh. I ordered a cup of their posole green chili soup (3.5) it was flavorful but a bit underwhelming. Others with us ordered the tenderloin steak (5) and the burger smothered in green chili(4). We all ordered cocktails/drinks from the bar and my lemon drop martini did not get finished(2.5). Others ordered crown and coke that were quite weak. Waitress commented the bar tender was not the usual. In the future, we will order wine or beer. Not sure I will return as the price, although very reasonable, is not commensurate with the quality. read more

Food critic here for the Grand Valley. I was super stoked to hear that the Staryhorn Grill was under new ownership and menu. Unfortunately, the breakfast is similar to another restaurant I've been to in Fruita. Nothing really special. I had asked for basted eggs and our server didn't know what I was talking about instead I got a set of mediums. Chicken fried steak was not very good at all. The oil in the fryer needs to be changed out. It had a fishy taste to it. Anyways, I thought I would give dinner a shot. I was sitted quite quickly which was nice. However, I was sat a table that was meant for 8 people. My significant other and I looked at each other in confusion as if other people were gonna join us. We had both ordered a steak medium rare and the steaks came out medium well. Does the cooks know that if that can't use the hand method well enough then they can simply use a thermometer. Medium rare is between 110-121. Our steaks were diffently in the medium well range 135. Disappointed for sure. I'll be visiting soon with my buddies in the restaurant business to see if any improvements have been made and get there opinions of the Staryhorn Grill. Question why was not the name changed if it's under new menu and owership? Seems like the restaurant still has the same old dirty laundry as the old owners. read more

All I can say is PERFECTION. Server, ambiance, parking, cleanliness, and that's not even the food review! The selection isn't overwhelmingly huge, rather carefully though out to attract all tastes. The portions were just the right amount-no fancy little bits of food with stripes of sauce to fool the eye here. The taste of everything hubby and I ordered was without fail 100% fantastic. We waited outside. 35 min later (sitting just outside and watching other people walk in and not come out), we checked back with hostess... who has written the phone number down wrong after we repeated it 3 times for her... she had given our table away. I'm from Cali and this place is so fucking good! Dannie made me my fave drink which is annoying to make in herbal and she came over and made sure she had it correct!!! Kiara was so sweet! Sit with her. She's the epitome of SERVICE WITH A SMILE!! The food came out quick and was perfectly made. Sounds to good to be true But it ain't. Also being from Cali I asked for four different sauces and she came with all of them with my entree and did not have to go back. Second chance. 1st time steak was well done when I asked for medium rare. This time came in for Brunch. Greeted right away, sat at a booth and sat and sat. Mind you they aren't busy. So we had our choice of tables. Finally a server comes over and asks what we want to drink. Water and tea. Came back with tea. No water. Then waited 10 or so minutes to see server finally appear and take a different tables order. We sat again 5 more minutes. Finally we left. Service is abismal at best. Not worth the money!!! I can cook better steak at home. I also plate it nicer. The ribeye steak was crazy thin and $26.... plus the gravy was so haphazardly thrown on the plate, it was all over the steak. The salad was nothing to write home about either. Pretty disappointing. Agree with some of the recent reviews that I would love for the local places to do better, but the Strayhorn really isn't good. The ambiance is loud and difficult to hear. The prices are amazingly over-priced and the food has much to be improved. I get the impression the owners bought too much crappy steak out of the trailers at the mesa mall during the 20-for-$25 deal and decided to open a restaurant to sell it all. My wife's ribeye tasted watery. My prime rib was okay, but the horseradish was more sour cream than horseradish. The presentation on both was lacking. Mismatched dollar store plates did them no favors. When we brought attention to the fact we didn't have the rolls brought to us, it was explained that they may not have had any tonight...despite the other tables around us having rolls? As a local I strive to support local businesses. Sadly this place makes it impossible to justify going back. read more

Had an unfortunate mix-up the last time. Ordered to go and the order was not correct. On one order requested no gravy on a side of mashed potatoes and my chicken fried steak dinner came without gravy. The meat was very overcooked and tough. Without the gravy it was almost impossible to eat - next day my mouth was still raw from the effort. We also didn't get the dinner rolls. Time before we ate in person and our server so indifferent that she never checked back with us to even get our credit card. I would have ordered pie (they do have good pies) but chose otherwise due to no follow-up. Another waitress finally came to our rescue and ran our card. read more

My boyfriend and I went here on a whim for some Sunday breakfast. We were seated quickly and our waitress was at our table within minutes to get our drink order. Our order was taken when our drinks were brought to us. I ordered the Cow Camp Skillet and my boyfriend got the prime rib and eggs. Our food arrived quickly and perfectly prepared. My skillet was delicious! The brisket was tender, perfectly cooked, and there was plenty of it. My boyfriends prime rib was also delicious. I live 2 blocks from this place & had bad service the first time and decided to give it a few more chances because of the convenience..NEVER again! The owner sits around every time getting drunk on wine while the servers are obviously struggling & he doesn't ever help out. Will NOT be back for the same lousy food or service. We kept seeing the signs saying that Colorado was beef country so we thought that in this stop of the trip we would have a steak. Little did I know that the steakhouses between here and there would be mostly 3 star reviews. Glad we came to Strayhorn Grill. I had the prime rib and my wife had the ribeye. The sides (between the two of us was the Cesar salad, the cup of soup, the roasted red potatoes, and the mushroom wild rice. For drinks my wife had the double Don Julio and I had the Dirty Hippie dark Wheat beer. Needless to say but we cleaned our plates. The bar did not have a wide variety of choices in each category, but I'm sure everyone could find something that they will be pleased with. The service was A+. read more
