I can't even begin to express how freaking excited I am that Strickland's IS BACK. As someone who grew up coming here, I truly think it's one of the best ice cream spots ever. It's like a thicker, creamier soft serve but still lighter than your typical ice cream. I truly have not been able to find anything like it since they sadly closed down a few years back. But low and behold!! It's one of the most simple frozen desserts ever, but just done so well. They have Vanilla and Chocolate every day, and two rotating flavors that change daily. Ok, this place has hype because it used to be by UCI for a long time and was closed for many years. There are a lot of customers that have been missing this place for a while. If you have a lot of nostalgia, I think that will bump up the rating to 4 or 5 stars. This place serves custard ice cream, which is not easily found, this means the ice cream is very creamy (and traditionally has more yolk content). If you are a custard fan, this is your place. If you've never had frozen custard before, think of it like the softness of frozen yogurt but the creaminess of ice cream. Pros: homemade custard, rotating flavors Cons: as of now there are only 4 flavors a day: chocolate, vanilla, and 2 others that are on a calendar. If you show up on a day with flavors you don't like...well you don't have much of a choice. The sizes are definitely smaller than they used to be back in Irvine (but I think still a decent value). There is not much seating here, just a small bench, this is a "take it to go" ice cream but the problem is there isn't much place to go except to take it to your car to eat. Tip: check the calendar of flavors on their website to make sure there's something you'd like to try (unless your're happy with chocolate or vanilla) Parking: there is plenty of parking BUT the shop is not easily visible in the shopping center, it is literally around the corner from the Coffee Bean and faces the street rather than the shopping center.. read more

The Scoop: Location: Between 24 hour fitness and coffee bean. There is parking by 24 or coffee bean. The parking by coffee bean is probably closer, but more crowded. Flavors: Today's selection was vanilla, chocolate, chocolate almond, and Oreo (our pick!). They'll be posting the daily flavors on a calendar, so check before you go. Seating: Currently no seating available, so grab your cone and enjoy it on the go! Ambiance: Clean and fresh, with a modern ice cream shop vibe. The staff was friendly, but their training wheels are still on. Experience: Rich, creamy, slightly melted - it hits almost all the right spots. Just wish we had more! I was also looking forward to the pineapple float or pineapple "dole whip" soft serve, but sadly, they didn't make it on the return menu. There's no seating. I don't mean "limited seating;" I mean "there literally isn't even one seat inside or outside." Of course their ice cream is so good that it magically disappears almost the same instant that you start eating it, but, still, it would be nice to have a couple of tables outside. The shop is a little hard to find. The address is on Newport Blvd, but physically it fronts on 19th Street near Harbor. It's between the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on one side and 24 Hour Fitness on the other. It's not hard to find -- once you know it's on 19th. On the positive side: The service is good, the vibe is relaxed, home town ice cream shop -- and the ice cream is darned freaking good.
