While I've never been to Sugar Bakery, I have had several items from Uber Eats and boy they can bake. I had a the Turkey, Havarti & Cranberry sandwich on a baguette and it was incredible. You know you're biting into good bread when you hear that loud crunch, then you bite through and it's nice and chewy inside. Everything inside the sandwich was as if you were making the best sandwich out of Thanksgiving leftovers. I also had the jam scone. Awesomely rich and crumbly. In the center there's a dollop of berry freezer jam. A little sweet for my taste with all the powdered sugar, which makes is more of a dessert than something I would eat for breakfast. I came here to treat myself since it's down the street from the blood donation center on a Sunday afternoon, and they had run out of chocolate chip cookies, but still had a fair selection of items. I got a lemon crinkle cookie, which was small for the price of $2.50, but tasty. The cheddar scallion biscuit was wonderful! Fluffy and buttery and flavorful, for $4.00 again a bit pricey but it was tasty. This is a great spot for typically-priced baked goods for Seattle. There wasn't that many single person seating so I had to sit there anyway. They have outdoor seating too, along with cups for water, and bins to bus your stuff, including metal forks and whatnot. I got an Americano (good, nothing special for $4), and a lemon polenta loaf slice (delicious, would recommend!!). They brought my order to me which I appreciated, there was a small yet understandable wait to order but they are pretty busy. I went on a Tuesday morning for reference. I recently went here while my husband was in surgery at Virginia Mason, on the recommendation of FOUR surgeons and nurses there. It's a small bakery/cafe, but has a nice cozy feel to it. The staff were all friendly, though a bit harried (it's clearly a popular place). They have an extensive array of non-dairy milks, which makes me so happy, and Cafe Vita coffee. The cafe au lait I got was delightful. Their bakes goods look pretty mouthwatering. I got a cinnamon brioche bun that was not as delicious as I'd hope for (the brioche was fine, it just lacked a good cinnamon flavor, had too much icing for my taste, and there wasn't much dough in there). I also got a cup of the leek and potato soup (they have sandwiches and salads as well) and it was comforting and tasty. And because I buy sugar when stressed, I also got a pack of day-old cookies. The Chocolate Chip Bacon was a standout favorite, though the PB and Snickerdoodle are good....amazingly, even at four days old, these cookies were soft, chewy, and delicious. read more

NO, THERE AREN'T *SAFE* GLUTEN-FREE OPTIONS HERE. A friend of ours bought us a "gluten-free" Flourless Chocolate Cake for a birthday party. She was told it was safe for celiacs. My fault for not verifying, but it was in no way, shape, or form gluten-free. Let me be clear: I didn't get "contaminated," I'd eaten pure gluten. My body and cognition and gut and vision and hearing and my ability to walk were destroyed for a solid week+. Within 15 minutes of consuming 4 bites, I was scratching my skin off and my husband and I looked at each other, and I burst into tears knowing what was to come; then scrambled for the Benadryl and ibuprofen and L-glutamine and prescription pain killers before I wound up doubled over and screaming as my body tried to kill itself over gluten... He called the bakery and asked about the cake. They told him it's gluten free. He gave them another chance to be honest and reiterated that it would be a Celiac consuming it--not someone who chooses to be GF, nor someone with a minor sensitivity. A straight-up systemic Celiac. S/he said after a pause, "I wouldn't trust it." No [expletive]. So, Sugar Bakery--remove "GF options" until you can do it right. My liver can't handle anymore companies "trying their hand at gluten free" and not knowing what they're doing, plus not being 100% transparent with their customers. Needless to say, we advise anyone with a gluten allergy to stay far away from this place. ------ UPDATE: In response to Quynh L. of the Sugar Bakery, the birthday party we attended in which the cake was purchased for (for my family) was in May 2019. I normally don't ever trust other people when it comes to my health, but she was told by someone at your establishment that I would be safe, and when we called, it took giving whoever answered the phone a second chance to give an honest response. I've been a diagnosed Celiac closing on 3 years now (apparently a lifelong, undiagnosed issue--hence my liver issues). We've lived in Seattle for a little over a year. I would not have chosen to eat at your establishment, and normally never trust other people with my health, no matter how much they think they know or how hard they tried to do something for me. My review states that I should have verified myself in the very beginning of it, and that that was on me. And although I appreciate your passion, it's unprofessional and misplaced. And I doubt that you haven't had another gluten reaction before. You just haven't heard about it [yet]. (I, too, don't return to places I've gotten sick from and just started doing reviews within the past 14 months.) I choose to live a full life, not stay at home and live in fear. I know doing so is risky, but imagine being stuck for years in a house, in constant pain and unable to walk while your organs are failing and no one can figure out what's wrong with you. I choose to live while I still can. If that makes me a "risk-taking Celiac," then so be it. With that, I've been contaminated enough in three years to know the difference between an, "Oops, this was handled improperly" versus "gluten is IN this". *What I experienced was the absolute worst glutening I've ever had. EVER.* Hence why I felt the need, months later, to finish my review. I recommend you check with the manufacturers of the heavy cream, butter, and chocolate chips then. Something contains gluten, and if not, then you have bigger problems in your bakery that more than just Celiacs should be concerned about. Next, I appreciate your response. You care so much that you checked out my other reviews (at the time: on coffee and an apartment, plus one glutening from a restaurant that said they could handle a severe Celiac and could not, but still was not anywhere near as bad as the glutening I received from your establishment)--these reviews apparently make me a "risk-taking Celiac"? Disgusting and ZERO customer service. I ordered two cakes for Christmas for a total of $126.50 and both were inedible. They were dry, crumbly and the icing had the taste and texture of lard. I was so excited to serve the cakes for dessert after Christmas dinner, but that excitement quickly turned to embarrassment as one of my guests spit the cake out. Yes, it was that bad. I sent an email about this to the bakery, and have never received a response. To make matters worse, I was a loyal and weekly customer at their cafe location in Queen Anne until my last visit when I spoke to one of the staff about my cake order. They pretended to care and address the issue with a manager but never asked for my name or the details of my order. No one should frequent an establishment that does not value its customers. I strongly recommend you get your cafe and sweets fix elsewhere as Seattle has plenty of wonderful options. read more

When I said Sugar Bakery, she had no idea where that is. So spread the words guys. By the way this place is so adorbs. When you walk inside, you are greeted by friendly staffs and a display of baked goods. I've tried their lemon tartlet (my favorite), almond tea cake, lemon bar, chocolate chip cookie, lavender shortbread, vietnamese coffee, unsweetened ice tea, and spit pea soup with demi baguette. You can't really go wrong with anything here. They bake everything fresh on the daily and they sell day old cookies at a discounted price. They also serve breakfast and lunch items and even deliver. We went through some different ideas and ultimately, she produced a beautiful cake for our wedding. She was upfront about costs; she delivered and assembled the cake at the venue. Overall, great experience with this bakery for a custom cake/event. The cake was pink champagne, which is an airy, lighter cake with raspberry filling. We asked her to put fresh berries on it (to match our outdoor summer wedding). The guests enjoyed the look and taste of the cake. Was excited to try this place as it's near my new job and I need to find a go-to coffee-shop. I made it in around 7:45 and it wasn't too busy. One gal walked in ahead of me, and there was one other person on the phone enjoying her coffee. The selection of pastries all looked good, and I noticed a large bag of Cafe Vita coffee beans on the shelf behind the bar. I had a cortado and a Havarti croissant. I wish they offered to heat the pastries up, and this was to be my breakfast and cold previously-melted cheese is not so appetizing. The cortado was not good, however. I'm not a huge fan of cafe vita, so I can't say it was the baristas fault or anyone's fault, I just didn't enjoy it. The croissant, being cold, was put off until I could heat it up myself (Not until the following morning) but toasted in a pan, I will admit, it was very very good. (Even being a day old!) this will definitely not be my go-to coffee shop, but if I'm in the mood for pastries, I'll go back. They do have a sandwich menu too for lunch. read more
