This was my first visit to this long standing old school diner in downtown Des Plaines. It's been on my to-try list forever but it took a venue change for my neighborhood men's club lunch group to get me here. I enjoyed my lunch and the value is good here. Parking is also easy, either right out front on Miner Street or in their adjacent parking lot. They have an extensive brunch menu. I had their gyros omelette, which comes with hash browns and pancakes. It was $15.95 and everything was generously sized. It was good except for the hash browns which had a powdery taste and were very bland. One lunch mate had a huge cheeseburger with fries for $13.95. Another had French toast with a side of bacon for $14.49. Yet another had two eggs with pancakes and sausage links also for $14.49. All items were generously sized. It wasn't crowded and the noise level was ok for conversation despite some contemporary pop music from the speakers. Naturally the restaurant has dated decor but is clean. Our server was Vickie and she was attentive and friendly and readily prepared individual bills for each of our party of 6. I didn't see a sign or notice but fyi they do charge a 3% credit card fee. Overall, a solid 4 stars, and a thumbs up for our lunch outing at this historic restaurant.

A Des Plaines institution...old school diner with a large menu, large portions, and damn good coffee. Great staff. But, I noticed the other day, when I stopped in, the quality of the food has dropped a bit. Maybe I caught the kitchen on a bad day? My eggs were flavorless, tasted stale. The ham off the bone was a bit drier than what I was used to previously. Potatoes came lukewarm, flavorless... not even salt and pepper could rescue them. Prices are still reasonable, portion sizes are large. But they have to up the game in the kitchen a bit. I've had better experiences there in the past.

Awesome experience here. Every staff member was sweet and willing to help! They converse with you, ask to help, and are quick to take your order. I highly recommend this establishment! First time I've ever tried poached eggs and it was runny yoke goodness. I would definitely return here!

My experience was truly a 3-1/2 star review, and only on the basis that the service could have been a bit more attentive. Very friendly and approachable staff, however, I did have to get up a few times to ask for items that were needed. Food was delicious, though more of a breakfast spot if that's what you are looking for; I had the grilled chicken delight, seasoned perfectly. Portions were very generous, so you certainly have value in what you are ordering, and the lentil soup was absolutely fantastic. You can tell that it's an establishment that people return to frequently, the retro old school sign is a classic, traditional diner fair with a relaxing vibe.

My friend picked this spot for lunch and it was nice. Great friendly staff. Lots of food choices. I liked my nutella crepes but I just wish they were stuffed with nutella like in Vegas's crepe spot, the nutella was just drizzled on. Still good though. Love the vintage feel to the place. My father orders the pound of ham off the bone every single time. A pound! (The man likes his leftovers). The basics are good here. We've had pancakes, waffles, eggs, omelettes. The only thing I didn't like was the breakfast burrito. Maybe it was an off day. Run by a nice Greek family. A standard for us in Des Plaines. read more

Simply put, I am a fan. Good food, great service and a nice atmosphere. Locals, day trippers from O'Hare and several office crews are always inside during the lunch hour. I have never had a bad meal. My dining partners rave about the soup. I love the spinach and feta omelet - all day. read more

After missing my flight at noon from vegas i finally made it back around 4am and all i wanted was a warm place and a meal and when i walked in i was greeted as if i was family. They are so sweet and caring. Best service i have seen in such a long time. I love it. Thank you to the hostess who treated me with such respect. Definitely will stop in more often!!! Really great breakfast place! I also get the banana nutella crepes and they are delicious! I usually get the corned beef hash on the side and I really enjoy that as well. It's not too greasy like It can be at other breakfast places. The service is also great here, I have never had a bad server. I will continue to return :) read more

Went for breakfast. Pancakes were exceptional,coffee just okay a little on the weak watery side,(may have been a poorly brewed pot). Was seated quickly. But afterwards there was great confusion among the waitress's on who would serve our table. All leading to a long delay before the coffee came. The overall ambiance is very diner like in my opinion. TV;s and free WiFi which wouldn't work for me. Friendly waitresses and hostess. Bottom line. Pancakes good among the best I've ever had. Service and ambiance not there for me. read more

Had lunch with 4 coworkers today, I had the "Clubhouse" not bad, needed a little salt, otherwise very good. The place was packed, had a small wait, but had time to chat with my friends. 2 others had salads, man they were overwhelming large enough for 2 people. Service was good, staff was friendly. I will be back with my family. read more

This place is great for bringing a book and having breakfast and coffee on your own. I am a female, and I have gone there alone many times and never felt judged or awkward. The staff is very attentive, service is quick, and the food is tasty. Its typical diner food. French fries and burgers or breakfast stuff. I like the decorations inside, they are always different with the seasons/holidays. read more

It was good. 2 of us thought it was great; 1 (myself) thought it was ok. I don't like my omelettes runny on the inside, which they were. Otherwise they were fine. Many choices in the menu. The pancakes and waffles were good; the reuben was fine. They forget to serve the kid's milk alongside the meal. The hash browns were blah. The coffee was dishwater. We had to leave to buy coffee elsewhere afterwards. Big group of cops were eating here, which was I guess a vote of confidence. read more

Place is alright food. Their hash browns could use new recipe they taste horrible. I would also make sure to check your bill total is correct. I had three items equaling $23 and my bill was $31. Totally did not make sense. If it wasn't for the hash browns and my bill being completely off I would've given more stars. read more

My husband and I have moved from LaGrange to Des Plaines and are so happy to have found an excellent replacement for our favorite neighborhood breakfast place. We used to love going to Blueberry Hill and now love Sugar Bowl. Great food, wonderful atmosphere and good prices. Though we will still go back to LaGrange's Blueberry Hill once in a while too. read more

Haven't been to Sugar Bowl in several years. Went today, 2/3/15, for a late lunch (2:00 PM). My companion and I have the Chicken Noodle soup and BLT's. I thought that the food was fine, my companion felt that the soup was too salty. The restaurant was nearly empty, but the service was awful. Waitress said our soup would be brought right away... our sandwiches were ready before the soup arrived. I never received the Diet Coke I ordered and the waitress did not check back with us until we had finished our meal. I won't be back for a long time! read more

First time here even though the iconic sign has been up forever. I ordered biscuits and gravy and they were great. The gravy has sausage bits in it and fantastic flavor. After trying someone else's pancakes though I would have to get them next time. The pancakes surprised a lot of us with their flavor and fluffiness. I can see why Sugar Bowl has been around so long! read more

If your looking for a nice place for breakfast this is it! I have been here 3 times so far and I have not been disappointed. In fact, everyone I have taken has also enjoyed this restaurant. Most have been back. They have a big menu, so pretty much anything you look for is there. The prices are average but the portions are large. It's clean and the staff is very friendly and attentive. They also have this homemade marmalade they bring to your table. YUM!! Make sure you try it. read more

Whenever we visit a new town, my friends and I resort to Yelp to find good places to eat. And very few times had Yelp disappointed us. And with this attested belief, we did much the same thing to get breakfast at Des Plains. Unfortunately, the culinary experience that my friends and I had at Sugar Bowl could be summed up as dreadful. As college students, we weren't expecting much at all from an old fashioned breakfast and brunch place. But even for our ordinary standards, this place offers very poor food especially when given that it has such high reviews on Yelp. I ordered a spinach omelette which was served with hash browns and pancakes, and my friends had ordered a breakfast burrito. One would find it hard to believe that simple items such as these can be cooked in an unappetizing way. The hash browns were extremely under cooked to the extent that some of it was even raw. It tasted more like mashed potato rather than hash browns, which are supposed to be crispy. The omelette was overcooked leading the eggs to lose its tenderness entirely. Moreover the omelette didn't seem to be seasoned at all. The saving grace was the coffee, which was served piping hot (the way I like it). Again, our expectations from an inexpensive place like this were very ordinary, but even the service was poor in that it took us a few minutes each time to get the attention of our waitress. When your entire group starts to talk at the table about how poor the food was, one can clearly make out that the experience was very unsatisfactory. As is the case often, I suspect our experience might be a one off or that this place is more famous for its lunch menu and not so much for the breakfast menu. Regardless, given our experience we have no reason to eat at this place or recommend it to anyone we know. But given that we aren't likely to go to Des Plains any time soon, I guess that assertion was irrelevant. Our faith in Yelp reviews is far from lost, but is definitely shaken. read more

I wish I had something good to say. After eating at this establishment for the past year and a half, the owner refused to seat me because I'm single, and I come in and read my newspaper on Sundays when I have breakfast. I don't know if someone complained, but I'm a good paying customer like everyone else, and I have no respect for any business establishment that discriminates for any reason. read more

Haven't been here since I was a kid. The hostess/owner as we entered was super nice and placed us by the front window so our kids could watch for trains. Very accommodating for those with kids. Service was great. Food was great. Restaurant was clean. Everything from the all american burrito to the pancakes were excellent. Average prices for a great experience. Definitely coming back. read more

Came in here on a Sunday at 10:15 a.m. not super busy I ordered 3 scrambled eggs 2 pieces of bacon 2 pieces of sausage and French toast. The bacon wasn't even cooked the sausage was undercooked I told my server she took care of it came back now the bacon was completely overdone and by the time she brought it back to me in my eggs were cold. French toast was rubbery at best I don't know why people are raving about this place when it wasn't that busy and they can't even serve quality food. Would I come back to this place for breakfast I highly doubt it. When the cashier asked me how my food was I told her it was mediocre at best that the French toast was kind of robbery told her about my issues with the bacon and the sausage and she didn't even care, she did ask how the service was that was good I guess they care more about service than quality food read more

I was grossed out by how they make orange juice. They throw the whole orange, peel and all, right from the box from the fruit distributor, into the juicer. Ugh!!!! anything could be on the peels, and their hands, and probably is. read more

Good, basic breakfast place. The fruit cup was freshly cut and tasty---no grapes! My husband had a skillet which he enjoyed; everything came out exactly as ordered. Good coffee and you can't beat the great retro sign outside. I appreciate that their breakfast potatoes are homemade, and that there's Tabasco on every table. read more

I had the Irish skillet, awesome!! I asked for the potatoes extra crispy and they nailed it. The food was fast, fresh, 10 points for presentation (the skillet came in an actual skillet, nice touch), and just plain delicious. After ordering, the food arrived within 5 mins. My order also came with a side of pancakes at no extra charge. Come eat here! You won't regret it. read more

Went in last Monday after picking up my mom from Ohare, wanted to take her somewhere good since she had been stranded in the blizzard, I had read good reviews & am I glad to have tried it! It was amazing! Food was great & service was perfect. From the young man who served us our water & coffee & our server(Vicky) to the manager who checked us out, all great. Our reservation was for 7:00 p.m. on July 2, and despite having a reservation, we waited more than 20 minutes to be seated. The ceviche, made with tilapia, came out shaped like a fish -- an extremely cute way of plating that caught our attention inmediately. The flavor was amazing, not too fishy, perfectly paired with citrus, and minced small enough that we weren't left chewing our seafood for long. This paired perfectly with the accompanied chips, or if you're me, just eat it by the spoonful because it was that good and refreshing. The molcajete was....insane. You can't go wrong with flame grilled meat piled high in a stone bowl, but each piece had it's own flavor and was so delicious. Though served with homemade tortillas to make your own wrap, I couldn't stop myself from just grabbing the meat on its own. This was the first time I tried cactus as well, and to my surprise it had just as much flavor as the meat. The salsa that is poured on top of all the meat pools at the bottom of the molcajete after your meal, making for a great treat at the end with some rice. Speaking of rice, their rice is perfectly fluffy and has great flavor as well. I'm typically not a fan of beans but I couldn't stop eating the ones that accompanied our meal...how did they season everything so perfectly? I also ordered the enchiladas oaxaqueñas (mole), but ultimately was served the verdes. This wasn't a big deal for me and I didn't even bring this up since I devoured my plate anyway, but after reading a few reviews have found out that they often are out of the mole sauce and possibly just served me the green sauce for that reason. Something to be aware of in case you were set on trying their mole! All in all, this restaurant packs flavor, quality, and great service. Staff was always attentive and I wish I lived closer to try more items.

Walked in at 3:10pm waitress said I cannot he served. Waitress was not accommodating not knowing I only wanted a coffee to go. Didn't bother asking what I was looking to order only said " kitchen closes at 3:15pm" ... curly hair waitress needs to learn Restsurant basics 101! First off if someone walked in 20 mins before close you don't assume they are staying to eat! How about offering them a cold drink or a dessert to go! No up sale no nothing just bad customer service! Funny seems the whole restaurant has this level of customer service, as I was walking out the door I asked a waiter if I could wait inside for 3 minutes to wait for my Lyft ride and he said again " we close at 3:30pm" I said it's only 3:13pm I'll be right out ( while there were 4 people sitting and eating). Sugar Bowl has a huge menu! It's the perfect place to take my family because there's something for everyone. I personally really enjoy the California Omelette and the Avocado Benedict - if you're a sucker for avocado and eggs just like I am, these will be your go-to. My kids love all the pancake and French toast options. Stuffed, Captain Crunch, and PB&J are so of their favorite flavor options. Good old-school breakfast place environment. If the staff is not happy with their jobs no one is chaining them to the restaurant chairs forcing them to stay. My husband and I enjoy a good breakfast and when we moved to Des Plaines a few years ago we discovered the Sugar Bowl. The food is good, the service is fast and the place is clean and bright. I am happy that I was able to visit this small family breakfast cafe. The food is great and staff do a great job and are very kind. The lady in the front is so friendly which she even help the senior general men to zip up his coat because he was having some difficulty with. I highly recommend this place. read more

The current owner is a lot nicer than that illiterate, ignorant foreigner Ted that used to own the place. Ted was good for sitting on his rear end all day, and screaming and yelling at everyone like he was God. Food is decent and prices are ok. There are better places to go than the Sugar Bowl! read more

Killer. Massive bar and the menu is amazing!. I would recommend a savory breakfast because that is really where this place shines. I will say that it was strangely cold in here? Make sure to bring something warm. read more

Very slow service. Was 15 minutes before someone even took our order. I had to give my order twice as the waitress wasn't listening...food was OK, once it arrived. read more
