Came in in labor day, so pretty busy. There were only 2 people working the front of house, 1 person serving the entire floor by herself and 1 person hosting and bartending it seems. Waited to be sat for about 20-30 min, which was fine. When we were sat we waited another 20ish minutes and got no service. So why were we sat? I would rather have waited to be sat if the server couldn't get to us yet. Management clearly has staffing issues and I was mad for the girls working that they had to deal with the labor day business with no support. Food looked good but never got a chance to order before leaving, we didn't want to wait that long. My issues with this experience were with management - to staff a holiday with only 2 FOH workers is not only torture for your staff but also disappoints customers. So I was feeling like grits on my trip to Memphis, and this spot has grits in the name! I had to try it! We came in with a large party and were seated immediately. The waitress took good care of us. We all order drinks and then we were. Drinks for nothing really spectacular. I don't know if they don't have an actual bartender at the restaurant, but they do have a full bar. But the drink mixing wasn't really impressive here but the food sure was. I got the grits with the duck. And it is super tasty. The Grits were a little bit hard, but the white gravy that gave you really helped. It made it mixed together very well. I also tried a piece of country fried steak. Now the country fried steak was amazing. It was breaded very well seasoned to a t. I love country fried steak, usually I make it my face from Cracker Barrel, but this one works great! Also the hash browns were good too, they had like some cream cheese type of mixture in them I guess? I don't know, but they were crispy on the outside and flavorful and tender on the inside. He was walking distance from where we were staying at and I loved it. My husband and I had a show at the Orpheum at 1. We walked in at 11:20 thinking we had ample time to eat. We were seated and had our order taken by 11:30. At 12:20, we still didn't have our food, so we asked the waitress if it was close to being ready because we needed to get to our show. The reviews are in fact consistent with my experience. We had a reservation at 12:00 p.m. The host sat us down at 12:35 p.m. There were so many many waiting and even more waiting for their food. We waited approximately 30 minutes for food that came out lukewarm. The grits didn't taste like cheese grits and they weren't tasteful or fulfilling at all. We went here by recommendation of our friendly hotel staff since it was closer than where we were originally going, and within walking distance. I ordered the Giddy-up grits, which were really good. The country ham and braised greens in it were the best part, but everything was really tasty and melded into a big delicious mess once I dug in. With Grits being the main food source, I expected them to taste better and have more flavor or seasoning. The place itself was pretty spacious and inviting. Because this is downtown, parking is up to you. I want to give another chance but I am afraid I will have the same opinion. The only saving grace was the mimosas. I was wandering around Downtown looking for brunch one Saturday. Everywhere was full or completely dead. It was strange. I expected Sugar Grits to be packed but I peeked inside and I didn't see a line so I decided to try it. When I went inside, there was a couple trying to get a table. They did walk away. The menu is large and it has a bit of everything. There are a lot of choices. I decided to go for the rise and shine because I felt basic but it's good to try the basic fare to judge a place. The bacon was good. The eggs were okay. I don't know if I'm a fan of the hashbrown casserole because I think it had gravy in it. I think I just like regular hashbrows. The grits were amaaaaaaazing. I've never had grits I didn't have to add salt to. They were perfectly seasoned and flavorful and thick... I was truly blown away by the grits. Then the biscuit. I was considering the biscuit flight. I'm glad I didn't get that. The biscuit was great. It was thick and rich and buttery and soft but crunchy on the edges. BUT it was so filling. So so so filling. It stayed in my stomach like a brick. I have been wanting to give this place a try, so Saturday I went in for brunch. Let me just say it is a pretty nice facility. I love how spacious it is and how the seating arrangements are. Speaking of, it didn't take us long to be be seated after arrival. Once sat at our tables, they started us off with water. They also quickly took our drink order. We had a bottle and made cranberry mimosas. That was so delicious. The champagne that they used was a little sweet and gave it that extra something that makes for a delightful drink. For brunch, I had the "Rise & Shine." It included grits, 2 scramble eggs, cheese hash browns, 2 slices of bacon, 1 sausage, and a homemade butter biscuit. I enjoyed certain dishes more than the other. The hash browns were really good as well as the meat. However, the eggs were super bland, the grits were not flavorful at all and seemed not to be mixed well, and the biscuit lacked the honey flavor that was described. This place's entrance faces 14/64/70/79, which had us confused when we were attempting to follow Google Maps. You've been warned. In the morning there's actually plenty of affordable street parking nearby (something we didn't know, we ended up paying $10 at one of the garages), for $1.50/hr on weekdays. The inside of this place is really nice, dimly lit for ambiance, and cool relief to the heat outside in the summer. Pick from a table or booth, or the bar in the back. They immediately supply you with ice water with LOTS of ice, very refreshing. The employees are all very friendly and don't rush you. The breakfast options are all a bit pricey but we knew that going in. The wait time for the preparation of the meal was a bit long for anyone who's eager to eat and get back on the road (like we were), but would be fine if you were there to relax and socialize. DO NOT GO HERE. First off, we only went here because it was the ONLY restaurant open on Memorial Day for breakfast. Do not be fooled by how delicious the menu seems. First off, they had one waiter working that morning so there were only about 5 tables seated but we still had to wait to be seated. People who sat after us got their food first. Moving on to the food, it looked delicious when it came out but IT WAS COLD. So not only did it take 45 minutes to come out it wasn't even straight out of the kitchen. The water tasted horrible no filter or anything. Specifically bad about my food as pictured was they didn't even melt my cheese, I asked for bacon and got none...AND the ham was inedible. There was no meat, it was all fattie pieces. I found this place on Yelp, somewhere close to where I wanted to go exploring. I got the cinnamon biscuit, blueberry biscuit, and the honey butter biscuit because I wanted to try all three, they were all good. I also got the gardener's grits with added cheese, and a side of scrambled eggs, I didn't get the added cheese I ordered but I didn't bring it to the waiter's attention, I just ate my food. The gardener's grits came with all the good veggies; onions, bell peppers, garlic sautéed spinach, chickpeas, and tomato gravy over red corn ground grits. The tomato gravy came on the side so you could pour how much you wanted. All of it went so good with my scrambled eggs, and the flavor of the veggies were so good, grits hot and cooked well. I really enjoyed my meal, and the rest of the group did as well. Three of us got green tea to drink and one got coffee. The coffee came with creamers and different sugars; the tea came with honey and lemon and of course you could choose to have sugar. The tea was hot but just would get cold fast, the waiter did bring out more hot water, but we wanted it hotter, but they didn't have a microwave to do that. We understand that it may be a safety issue but still wish we could have had it hotter. The actual place was nice and clean and all staff were great with service; we left a really nice tip. No real wait on Mother's Day. We were seated quickly but waited a while for a server to decide who gets our table. We ordered coffee to start and an orange juice. By the way the OJ was light with no pulp but not excellent. Also - because it was Mother's Day there was a special menu for today only so we couldn't modify or order off the original menu. We had three entrees and an appetizer. The appetizer was the Biscuit Board which comes with a cinnamon biscuit, a blueberry glazed biscuit and a honey butter biscuit (all very large) plus sausage, bacon & ham, PLUS raspberry jam, apricot jam, blueberry jam & butter. This was filling and we split it between the three of us. The ham was SUPER SALTY, bacon was good, and sausage was excellent (think Bob Evans or Tennessee Pride quality). We had the shrimp and grits with andouille sausage which smelled amazing and my Dad says it was the Best Shrimp & Grits he's ever had! (he's also never had them before, so this was a first for him) I wanted the Rise & Shine breakfast: two eggs, meat, biscuit & hash browns - but I don't like melted fake cheese much so I didn't want the hash browns with cheese - which is the only way they came...guess they were premade so no substitutions or options were available...the server allowed me to order ala carte - so I had 2 eggs over medium, grits (very good), bacon & honey butter biscuit (it was cold). The ala carte meal was $2 less than the Rise & Shine meal...I just got grits instead of the hash browns. Hmmmm. Refills of coffee were slow too...and it wasn't even a packed house yet. We saw so many servers with the salmon-colored shirts but it appeared everything was just moving slow today. I had the blessed opportunity to visit Sugar Grits for breakfast. Overall, it was an awesome dining experience. I highly recommend the Bird in a Bed (Chicken and Waffles). The reason that I am giving Sugar Grits 4 stars, rather than 5 stars, is because of their men's restroom maintenance or the lack thereof. The men's restroom was rather nasty and smelly.
