So, I should preface this by saying I usually go to Sugar Koi once every other week from my home in Greensboro. That's how much I love it. I am absolutely crazy about the thai tea and matcha flavors. The flavors are hard to find, but also the ice cream is just delicious. Very smooth and amazingly blended flavors. Never chalky (like matcha sometimes especially can be). Nat (the owner) is also an incredible person and one of the kindest people I have met since moving to NC. I cannot recommend this place enough, and I am happy to have found it! read more

On my trip to Japan I looked all over everywhere I went for ice cream filled tayaki (fish shaped pastry). Little did I realize that I was more of an American-created trend. So you can imagine my excitement when I saw that one had come to Durham. Overall, I was a little underwhelmed. The soft serve that they used was sub frozen (did not hold its shape even while they were dispensing it. This made the fish shaped pastry get soggy very quickly. On the other hand, their freshly scooped ice cream was great. Hopefully they can work on refining their tayaki ice cream product! read more

We loved Pinecone so I was happy to see that they have been rebranded as Sugarfish with the same staff and ice cream/espresso :) The sugarfish itself is so cool! They walk you through the different steps to choose your ice cream and toppings. It's so fun to have the ice cream, mochi, pocky etc in this really yummy and soft cone. We will definitely be back a lot during the summer! read more

Once I saw photos on social media of the taiyaki ice cream (fish cone) I knew I had to get in on the action. I am a self-proclaimed matcha lover so choosing that flavor of soft serve was the obvious decision. The good: very cute Instagram-worthy ice cream with pocky and sprinkles! the fish waffle was pretty yummy too! Complements ice cream for sure. The bad: the soft serve was bad. Very icy, not smooth at all. The green tea flavor was not good at all...very artificial tasting, not premium matcha flavor. You can tell this is the case before you even taste it because the color is like a bright fake green...doesn't look like a matcha green..very disappointing. Also, we got the mochi topping and they just give you three tiny mochi on a stick. ummmm what? Can you be any more stingy with mochi balls? and the mochi were stale..not soft and chewy as they should be. Finally, the price: EXPENSIVE. For what you're getting, which is some mediocre soft serve in a little fish with three balls of stale mochi and some sprinkles, it came out very very pricey. Not worth it at all. All in all, i'm glad I got my Instagram picture of the cute taiyaki soft serve but I wouldn't get it again. I'll certainly come back to try the ice cream though as they had some interesting flavors. read more

After seeing the koi cones on Instagram, I knew I had to stop in to check out Sugarfish. Unfortunately, I think the hype is unjustified. The cones are undoubtedly beautiful, but they're a bit pricey considering the ice cream quality. As many other have mentioned, the soft serve texture seemed a bit off. Further, the vanilla soft serve lacked any real flavor. To me, it tasted more like slightly sweet frozen milk than vanilla. The amount and/or quality of the vanilla they use to make the vanilla soft serve isn't great - the flavor needs to be stronger. I would also argue that the soft serve machine needs to be set to a lower temperature - it melted QUICKLY, which I think could be solved if the ice cream were served colder. By the time I had reached the koi cone, the ice cream was starting to melt through the cone - again, I think serving at a lower temperature would help. Finally, they could really up their sprinkle and mochi game. In all, while I think the Sugarfish concept is cool, I probably won't come back unless it's for an Instagram picture. There are better (and way less expensive) ice cream shops around. If the quality improved, I would definitely be willing to give them another shot, but for now I'll stick with other options. read more

If you love taking food pics, you kinda have to check this place out! The cones and ice cream presentation are very Insta-worthy. Unfortunately, the ice cream itself was not up to par. The cones are delicious. Mine was fresh and soft and ultra tasty. If the ice cream was better, I'd be here all the time. The problem is, Sugar Koi charges a lot for these gorgeous cones, but the soft serve is some of the worst I've ever had. It's grainy and melted from the start. I'd rather give me money to The Parlour or even DeeLuxe Chicken and get better ice cream. read more

If you have ever visited the ice cream store called PineCone that previously occupied this space, you will quickly realize that the store is pretty much identical but rebranded and now serves instagram worthy fish shaped-waffle cones too. I ordered one of the fish-shaped waffle cones, and chose the green tea as my flavor. I hadn't read the other reviews until writing this review, but I am very much in agreement that the soft serve ice cream itself had very little flavor. The waffle cone was super delicious though. It was more waffley than coney in texture if that makes sense? My daughter tried a regular kids cone, which was generously scooped. I think they are still serving regular Maple View ice cream (different from the soft serve) because the strawberry fields tasted much better than my soft serve one. read more

We have been eager to try this place but it's always so packed when we go by. Luckily, we went on a Wednesday night and there were only a few people in front of us. The decor is cool, they have several cute items for sale. The ice cream was delicious. I got mine in a fish pancake. So. Good. And they made it fresh to order which made me very pleased! I stopped here yesterday for a quick snack because honestly those cute little koi cones from the pictures drew me in. I found out when I got there that those cones are only for the soft serve ice cream. I asked to try a few of the hard ice creams and I feel in love with the butter bourbon truffle. So good! I am so glad Sugarfish has brought taiyaki to the triangle! It really hit the spot. I also enjoyed their add on options of the pocky and the pirouette. I will say I would like to see more ice cream flavors offered for the taiyaki, and maybe a slightly softer taiyaki cone like I had in NYC. The slight crisp on the cone was still good, however. While the concept is great for Instagram photos, the soft serve was at best meh. The fish cone/waffle is actually great, crunchy outside and soft inside and goes well with the icecream. I'm not sure if their ice cream flavors are better but there was much lacking flavor wise for the soft serve, we got matcha/vanilla and chocolate/vanilla. It was good consistency but barely any flavor except sugar. Plus the servings are huge and we could barely scratch the surface, they really need to offer more sizes for soft serve if possibleas it leaves a rather messy experience given it's a heaped cup of fast melting soft serve. read more

5 stars for the concept, 3 for the execution, so 4 overall. This place is definitely catering to those people looking for a novelty that is also extremely "grammable". I really wanted the ice cream to be great, and maybe the hard ice cream is great, but the soft serve leaves a lot to be desired. I had the green tea vanilla swirl, I could really only taste the vanilla flavor, and the ice cream is closer to frozen yogurt texture. The fish cone was surprisingly good, it's not as crispy as a traditional waffle cone, but the flavor was really good. It had that waffle cone flavor you would expect plus a touch more cinnamon flavor which I enjoyed. In the future I will opt for the hard ice cream in a bowl topped with the fish cone, rather than the soft serve. read more

What a treasure! My nephew and I stopped by for an after dinner treat and had a really lovely experience. He got a cone with strawberry and chocolate, I went for the whole shebang of the Koi cone with mint chocolate chip, vanilla, marshmallows, pocky sticks, and sprinkles. The Koi cone is sooo yummy- warm and chewy and not too sweet. The owner, Nat, was really attentive and super kind. My nephew has a peanut allergy and Nat went out of his way to make sure he felt really comfortable, even making sure without asking to switch out the scoop utensil. Visited this new establishment for the first time today. Told my server that I couldn't decide between coffee or ice cream. He said that he had a drink to incorporate both. Choose a scoop of ice cream and have 2 shots of expresso added to the cup. He suggest a bourbon, chocolate, caramel ice cream. It was out of this world!! Will be back! read more

i was super excited to come to sugar koi to check the ice cream in the taiyaki. the environment was awesome and beautiful. the brick building is pretty and lots of shops to check out. totally a place to bring a friend or a group of them. but i was pretty bummed because it was crazy expensive and there was no custard in the fish cone with the ice cream which was what i had before in los angeles. it's pretty disappointing but i think this the only taiyaki place in this area so definitely a try for ppl. enjoy! read more

Durham again surprises me by serving another eclectic Asian cuisine - taiyaki ice cream. My fiancé had actually just proposed to me and this was the place I wanted to try out to celebrate! I agree with some of the other reviewers that the matcha flavoring in the soft serve is not particularly strong, but the fish cone is soft and delicious. The toppings are also very cute, so overall, a presentation well done. There isn't a lot of seating in the place, but the fish cone is perfect for walking and eating. read more

Lovely little ice cream place, and a lot of flavors are made in house - toasted coconut, green tea, Thai tea, all are super yummy. Best green tea ice-cream I think I've ever had. The restaurant is family owned, and the kids have been making their own Asian-influenced ice-cream since they were 10 years old or younger. My children love this place. We will be back. read more
