During my last visit, I walked in to see only 4 cupcakes left. I was extremely disappointed to only have leftover cupcakes to choose from. Since I know getting here before all sold is a hit or miss, I decided to get the peanut butter sopapilla & chocolate hazelnut cupcakes...two flavors I would not normally get. Both cupcakes were excellent!! Sugar Ray's cupcakes are always moist which keeps me coming back for more. The one thing I was worried about when I first tried Sugar Ray's is the fact they use cream cheese in all icings. Fortunately, it is such a small amount and comes together perfectly with the cupcake flavor. My favorite is the Smores cupcake. All I can say is thank goodness they give me a limited selection, because I'm sure I would get two of everything if they had more to choose from. I am so disappointed. I've used Sugar Ray's numerous times for cookies and cupcakes; my parents' 50th anniversary, my 50th birthday, showers, etc. I went to them more than a week ago for frosted sugar cookies for a housewarming party. I wanted house shaped cookies. I explained this. I was asked to send a picture of my new house they could use for inspiration. I thought how awesome! They would make red brick, etc. Nope. They took that picture and somehow imposed in the icing. It is cheap and tacky looking. Worst of all despite making it clear this was not at all what I had expected when I picked them up, I was charged $180 for them. I'm too embarrassed to even hand them out. We order cupcakes from Sugar Ray's at least 7 to 8 times a year. When It came time for my personal birthday, we ordered them in advanced as always called after emailing to verify. Called again the day of to check if they were ready before leaving to get them and the cupcakes where never made. They offered to make them for the next day. They did so without a mention or any effort to fix there mistake. I had double checked and verified before hand and still they just forgot? The woman I spoke to said she would pass it along but she had no power to do anything to make up for it. Apparently no one dose or cares to. Worst customer service I have ever experienced. I came in last week to place an order for cupcakes and cookies the employee told me to come back when it was three weeks away from my event date. I came to the store exactly 3 weeks away from my event to place my order and they told me they couldn't do my order because they had to many for that day. They then told me I could do it for the day before but they would charge me a fee to keep the items overnight for me to pick up on the day needed. This is a review to add to the experience that my wife shared previously. I went to the shop with her and our three babies to pick up the cake for our first child's third birthday. I didn't set foot into the store as I was waiting in the car with my children but what happened was a bit baffling. We went to the store 20 minutes earlier than the pickup time and were told to come back in 20 minutes because that was when the cake would be ready. By 3:30 pm, when we were back from a little drive around the neighborhood, my wife went into the shop and only came out with the cake by 4:05 PM. In the meantime, I've seen two or three customers that walked in and got out with their cakes. Were they also told to come back at a later time than their original pick-up time? Well, we weren't given any explanation except that it was a busy day. 30 minutes may not be a big deal. But if you value your time and don't want to be sitting in your car without knowing what's going on in the store, this may not be your shop. (or be 30 minutes late!) read more

I really enjoyed the texture of the cupcake. It's between light and dense...the frosting is light and has a nice cream cheese taste. I didn't give it 4 stars due to the service. The service was very dry. The young lady at the counter never cracked a smile and it just wasn't a pleasant vibe in the store. The customer she was helping was much more friendly. Popped in just before close and scooped up 6 of the last cupcakes that remained ($15 I believe). My bonus sister told me about the macarons and how they were her new favorite treat. I ended up forgetting to even ask if they had any. Cupcakes: they taste homemade, moist, cake itself wasn't that sweet (not a bad thing), frosting was a mix of sweet and salty (every flavor I tried)...twas almost too salty for my liking. Sampled the vanilla, carrot, and lemon if i remember correctly. Favorite was the carrot (had a pecan on top). I also got to meet Rachel, aka "Ray." She was nice and personable. My experience was a little rushed but nonetheless very friendly...a nice lady held the door open for me on my way in and greeted me warmly. Upon exit, she was chatting with a fellow but stopped to bid me a good holiday weekend. It felt like I was visiting my aunt's bake shop kitchen...only Rachel isn't old enough to be my aunt. :) Next time, macarons; give them a whirl. read more

4 stars for the cupcake. 5 stars for the decoration and sweetest, most accommodating owner. I stopped by to grab a couple cupcakes for my son to select a flavor the day be fore his birthday. I submitted an order online after midnight the evening before I needed and 18 custom decorated Nintendo Kirby cupcakes in 3 different flavors were ready for me by 4 PM the following day. That's just awesome! I've attached a picture so I don't have to describe how adorable they were. The red velvet was my favorite of the three we had. It's somehow fluffier and smoother than the other flavors. The chocolate with nutella was also very good. Just the right amount of nutella to give flavor but not be overpowering. The vanilla was sadly just a little too sugary. My 5 year old liked this one best though. read more

Was the rudest place, I have ever been. The Owner was behind the wall at her desk letting us stand there and wait while it them a good 8 minutes to come out and great us. After reading the reviews, I realized that one needed to be at the store when it opened for a chance at any sort of cupcake selection. We arrived 15 minutes before the stored opened and there was a hand printed sign on the door saying there were opening 15 minutes late meaning at 11.15. We took a short walk and arrived at 11.15 on the dot and found the store had already opened and a line of people were already waiting in the very small area at the counter. By the time it was our turn, they had already sold out of almost all of the flavors. I realize allowing walk-in customers to take dozens of product out a time is one business model, but is it really the right model when you have such little product available when the store opens? While the staff are friendly, I am not certain that having to tell multiple customers within 5 minutes of opening to come back later when we have more product while allowing people to walk out with dozens is the best approach at expanding your customer base. But if alienating new customers at opening time is your goal, it seems to be working as people walked out with no product in front of us because 75% of the selection was sold out. Alas, we waited and were able to get 4 cupcakes and the man behind us cleaned out the rest while we paid. So within 6 minutes of opening or at 11.21 the entire front counter for walk-ins was sold out. Like I said, your supply and demand model for walk-ins could use some work IMO. I can honestly say we were not impressed with the cupcakes themselves. The cake part was moist, but rather tasteless. I could not taste any vanilla in the vanilla frosting. I will say the vanilla frosting paired with the chocolate cake was better but not repeat customer better. The snickerdoodle version unfortunately was not any better. My cat who loves cupcakes covered the product. So the wife, husband, and cat all voted a thumbs down on the cupcakes. I wish I could comment on the macaroons but being told "come back later" at an undisclosed time when they "might" be available does not work work for me when everything was already sold 6 minutes after opening. Check me in the minority on this bakery. Given the initial sales experience and the lack luster product, I do not see a reason to return. read more

To be clear, the issue isn't so much the 30-minute delay, but more that no one communicated that to me. Yes, you can be behind schedule. Sure, it can be that hectic day. Okay, you can be a small business owner and fine, you can be understaffed that day. It happens, I understand that, and that's not the issue. The real issue is that first, you/your staff didn't let me know you were a bit behind schedule. Second, at 2:15pm, your staff said it would be 20 minutes more, which means 2:35pm. When I called to put in the order, whomever I spoke with explained that your store closes at 3pm on Saturday, and that the last pick-up is 2:30pm. Now I did not want to be THAT customer that was running late for a cake pick-up and keeping employees from going home on a Saturday. I made sure to leave on time. To be punctual (or early in my case), is no small feat for a mom of two infants and a toddler. I explain this to show the effort and planning that went into my part. It's not too much to ask you/your staff to say, "Hey, sorry but we're running behind schedule today...it's going be closer to 3pm...we can give you call if we finish a bit earlier." And you know what, I would've been like, okay, there's a Whole Foods down the street, we'll pop in there and pick up a couple of things. I know how to navigate that and find a work-around because inevitably things happen. But I need someone to communicate what's going on. How would I know what's going on in your kitchen? But you/your staff kept us in the dark and that wasn't fair to me or my family when we're not given a realistic timeline. You said you've been in the business for eight years, so you must be able to gauge more accurately how much time you need to finish up a cake or several. 20 minutes vs. 45 minutes...wishful thinking? I'm willing to drive long and far for a good cupcake so I was shocked and amazed that there was a cupcake, bakery less than 2 miles from my home at Lakeside Market. The hours are limited between 11 am and 5 pm so I made a point to stop by during a lunch break. Sugar Rays is the cutest, country chic bakery every (tasteful and not too overdone). The owner's seems to have expressed herself well with the décor and the cupcakes. The cupcakes are "not" mass produced gigantic, overly sweet cookie cutter duplicates. These are some homemade, moist, creative flavors decorated beautifully yet minimally. I grabbed a vanilla and a raspberry "flavor of the day" that she was offering. Other flavors included a chocolate/chocolate, chocolate/peanut butter, and lemon to name a few. The icing is creamy and rich. I'm definitely not a baker but I believe she used vanilla bean (versus vanilla extract) because the flavor of the vanilla was sooooo pronounced and delicious. The raspberry cupcake included a fresh raspberry on top and was moist and delectable. It's just good ya'll.
