Hearing all the buzz about this place I decided to check it out. Walked in, and wasn't particularly impressed by the look of of it. It looks like a pumped up donut shop. I love sprinkles. So naturally I ordered a regular white cupcake with sprinkles on it. Woah, $3 for one cupcake in, Bakersfield? Lol. Okay... I reasoned with myself thinking I've never tasted a bad cupcake before and if nothing else, it's for the "if you don't try it you can't knock it" logic. WOW. I bit into it and to my surprise the frosting was EXTRA salty, I usually lovee frosting especially the vanilla variety with sprinkles on it, but jeez way to ruin it for me. Bleh bleh it was gross, (dry heave, gag). Not worth the boutique prices, if you want real boutique delicious desserts worth these prices, head onto LA to try Milk Shop or Fusion Tea Bar in OC, where it actually worth the price. For now I'll stick to Smith's Bakery when I'm in Bakersfield. read more

I realize that this is something of a fat kid thing to say, but one thing Bakersfield has been lacking for years is a good, contemporary bakery. Yeah, we've got Smith's (which is delicious!), but that's not a bakery you can hang out in-- plus their stuff may be delicious, but it's all very "classic." Needless to say, I'm excited to see places like Sugar Twist and Sweet Surrender popping up throughout town. Every few weeks, friends and I go to the little nail shop right next door to Sugar Twist to get pedicures, so yesterday, after our nails, we decided to fat kid out. I got the Nutella and Banana Cronut (it had a different name, but that's effectively what it is). My friend got the pineapple upside down thing. The cronut is yummy. I'm not a huge Nutella fan, so part of me wishes I could get a similar item with just chocolate and bananas. That said, I totally realize I'm alone in this world with regard to not wanting to bathe in Nutella. . . so, I get why they make this little delight with that. My friend really enjoyed her pineapple thing. She said it tasted like a hybrid between an old fashioned donut and a pineapple upside down cake. A tip for the management: we both agreed that our items would have been exponentially more tasty if they had been warmed up a little bit. I'm not sure if that's an option, but it would be a great one to have. Service was great- the gentleman helping us was cheerful, friendly, and had good suggestions for what to try. It was hard to decide which to try, but I brought home the baconator, the New Yorker(the famous cronut), the hamburger looking sugar cookie, the champaign donut called the bomb.com, and a free taste test of the cream cheese puff pastry. I ordered the Big Kahuna and the All in One sandwiches and ate there. The All in One sandwich had a big ugly black hair in it, I found it when I decided to take a few jalapeños off of it. Thank goodness I did, it grossed me out but they replaced it with a new one. Of course I checked the new one too, lol,hopefully nothing bad was in there that I DIDN'T see, but both sandwiches were delicious. Tastes like a regular chocolate cupcake Red velvet - moist, but a little too sweet. Vanilla custard - custard covered in chocolate. Very weak. Not my cup of tea Chocolate brownie - extra chocolaty. Moist. Can't go wrong with brownies. COFFEE: Salted Caramel latte - way too sweet. Tastes almost like the frappe at Mcdonalds. Hazelnut latte - a little less sweet with a hint of Hazelnut. Overall, it's okay. I couldn't finish everything I've ordered. I love non-sweet sweets and that's hard to find, especially in Bakersfield. My expectations were low so I wasn't overly disappointed. I absolutely love that this place is so close to the studio and so good!! Break burritos and biscuits and gravy are amazing. While the scones and assorted pastries are perfect. Try a scone you won't regret it, especially when they have the seasonal ones like pumpkin spice and orange cranberry yum!! We came in here for a sweet treat after lunch, but there's nothing sweet about this place or its customer service. There were two gals behind the counter, but only one of them was doing her job. The other was on a personal call. We waited in line, and when she was done with her call, she looked us up and down and said, "Can I help you?" in the most hostile manner I've ever encountered. We ordered a large iced green tea, a hazelnut blended coffee, and a pink donut with sprinkles for my son. After we pay, $7.26, we stand back and wait for our drinks (she had already given my son his donut). She then came over, and said in the same hostile manner, "We're all out of hazelnut syrup. What would you like instead?" I said, "Nothing. I'll just take my money back." She repeated herself, "What would you like instead?" I said through gritted teeth, "Nothing. I don't want the green tea or the blended coffee. Just my money back." She then gets her manager, and neither of them could figure our how to work the register (an iPad). He kept asking her for her log-in information, and then couldn't figure out which order was mine even though I told him twice that we had paid $7.26. In the meantime, the clerk came back with a huge jug of syrup and said, "I found the hazelnut syrup, so I'll make your drink now." I really didn't know how much clearer I could be. I don't want your drinks. I don't want your snotty attitude. I just want my money back. Meanwhile, the manger had located our order, and is slowly counting out $7.26. "Oh, how nice," I thought, "He's giving us our full amount back for our trouble." No, I was wrong. He just couldn't figure out how to subtract the cost of the donut from the remainder of the order. Once he figured that out, he gave us our reimbursement, but shorted us five cents. When I pointed it out, he gave it to me, saying, "Whoops." Whoops is right. Big mistake stopping here. I'm fairly in love with Sugar Twist. Great, prompt customer service and more than willing to accommodate custom orders! Some of their items seem super glamorous and are actually a little lackluster (the Princess cupcake and the Oreo cupcake for me were just too cake sense that it stole from the fun additions). However, there are some signature items that are unparalleled: the Maple breakfast sandwich (customized your way), the Gigantor, their dessert bars (pecan pie and 7 layer cookie were standard and good!) and their Nutella Cronut was fun but too light for me on the Nutella... Upon walking into Sugar Twist my A1C shot up 5 points which say's how good everything is! we were in the neighborhood yesterday and decided to swing by and grab a few and head home so we'd have something with our cup of coffee. I came here to because I read about the make your own donut bar but when I got here I realized why would I want to make my own donut when Sugar Twist already created such delectable pastries. Sugar Twist has a good variety of breakfast sandwiches under $5 each! I ordered the Croissant Sandwich which comes with a sausage patty, bacon, egg and cheese. The croissant is flaky, buttery and I couldn't ask for more. This sandwich is very filling and lasted me the whole day! My bf ordered the All-in-One which is a bagel sandwich with bacon, ham, egg, cheese, cream cheese and jalapenos! Even the bagel is covered in cheese. The sour jalapenos and cream cheese really complimented each other and made for a very unique breakfast sandwich! We also tried the Baconator which is a fluffy donut with maple frosting and covered with bacon! It was surprisingly good and a must for any die-hard bacon lover. We also tried other small treats like the Red Velvet Cake Pops and Jalapeno Poppers and they were excellent as well. Happy eating! read more

A: Sugar Twist Even though its name advertises a specialty in sweets, I opted for a savory breakfast croissant sandwich and was quite pleased. Unlike many restaurants where one must choose to top the egg with cheese, sausage, or bacon, Sugar Twist's breakfast sandwich (also available on a bagel, biscuit, or maple bar!) includes all of the above. Everything tastes freshly prepared and comes out of the kitchen piping hot. This is not your dollar menu fast food breakfast fare. Still, it's quite reasonably priced and very tasty. Seating is limited, but most people were taking their orders to go anyway. Service was friendly and efficient. Next time I'll have to try one of their donuts... though not the Gigantor (see photo). If I ever order one of those, it'll be to share with at least three other people. read more

1st time in and you get a free cream cheese puff! Whaaat?! YAAAAAA! I jumped on it, tried to be polite but was fooling no one - I ATE it (no mess!) as I ogled the display cases at this bakery! AHHHH! Not really known to have a sweet tooth unless the moment really strikes me but I was in fine form today! I grabbed an old fashioned chocolate donut looking thingy (99 cents!) and for hubby, his fave, a red velvet cupcake with cream cheese icing ($3 and so worth it!)! I found it to be reasonably priced for the freshness and the staff were very engaging. The cakes looked beautiful. Apparently, much of the best stuff (they are known for their cream puffs and I now know why!) can be sold out mid morning so best to get there early if you want something specific. There was still a LOT to choose from at 3pm and I have not a bad thing to say about this place. The staff had no problem telling me about their favorites and explaining all the different pastries. We ordered my son's birthday cake from Sugar Twist. You can see the end product in the photos section. Amazing cake - pictures dont do it justice. Their creative team really went all out and everyone was raving about the presentation as well as the taste. I like the fact that their icing is not tooo sweet. Its perfect. The staff was very friendly, when we went to order the cake, pick up as well as a few other times. Try their sugar cookies as well as the small cakes. The chocolate cake is great. I highly recommend them. Be aware that you will have to do a lot of paperwork for the custom cakes ( But I dont blame them - a few bad experiences from customers and the business has to wise up). read more

Came on a weekday evening for a sweet treat. They had a decent selection of cookies, donuts, cakes, cupcakes, and fruit tarts. The menu also surprised us with drinks and food options that I'd like to try in the future. Maple bar donut: this was eh. The frosting was good but the actual donut was not impressive. Perhaps it was hanging out since the morning but still a bummer. Vintage cake: 2 layers of vanilla cake with a bottom brownie layer with cream cheese buttercream and a fudge frosting above the brownie. The cake was moist and spongy, like a Twinkie cake texture. The brownie idea instead of a chocolate cake layer was creative but the brownie and fudge layer were sightly disappointing as well. The frosting was yummy with a light, smooth consistency. Cronut: really crispy, which I loved, but very oily. I know it's fried butter bread so it seems silly to complain about it being oily but I've had others that weren't this oily tasting. The service was good with friendly staff and the facility looked clean. There were not many customers at this time. It's nice that they're open late; not many bakeries are. Would love to come back and have some of the other items on the menu. read more

*Food* The baked goods are delicious. The pastries, donuts and cakes are all baked to perfection every time I get them. The only gripe my wife and I have had is that the fruit isn't always so good on their pastries and they don't cut away the green stem part from the strawberries (they remove the leaves, but the chewy, tart green bit remains) which just notches the food below absolutely perfect. The breakfast items are good as well, especially for the price. The iced coffee and coffee drinks are also always excellent! *Service* This is a big gripe for me. If you're running a business that serves the public you should expect nothing less from your customer-facing employees than friendly and helpful service. They don't always have to go above and beyond or be bubbly and smiley - but they sure as hell should be nice and pleasant to interact with. This has not been the case here for my wife and I on about 50-60% of our trips here. More often than not, the person helping us couldn't care less that we exist and come across more as frowning pastry dispensing robots than friendly humans happy to help. Several times we've encountered someone who had a not-so-subtle air of "go fuck yourself" to their demeanor; not for any reason seeming to stem directly from us as we walk up, say hello, and politely order with pleases and thank yous and gratuities. Nobody has been directly mean to us (no name calling or arguing or anything). It's just not been the pleasant experience I'd expect from a place selling beautiful pastries. Basically - we won't be back. The food is great but great food isn't hard to find. I expect a pretty simple and achievable baseline customer service experience where I am made to feel welcome and I too often don't get that here. For what it's worth, when the service has been good it has often been great - very friendly and helpful and happy to help. It's a shame that this hasn't more commonly been my experience here. read more

I'll let you in on a secret: I'm over cupcakeries. Sprinkles was so 2006, people (is that pretentious enough?). I didn't expect much from this place. I thought I'd hate it. I thought I'd scoff and say, "Oh god, way to go Bakersfield!" in that sarcastic tone locals know all too well. I'm eating crow. Oh, Sugar Twist. You're doing something right! I just stopped in and got 5 cupcakes. It cost me 11.75, I believe. 2nd date (aka red velvet): Meh. I'm kind of over the whole "omg red velvet!" craze. This is a chocolate cake tinted red, NOT a traditional red velvet cake any of your southern or midwestern gals, like myself, might expect. HOWEVER: the frosting is hella good, and the cupcake is yummy. I'm glad it doesn't exactly call itself a red velvet cake, or I'd just harder. Regardless, it's good. You'll want to share with your friends.. or hoard it all to yourself. The Codi: um, hello. Nice to meet you, Codi. You're delicious. And baked perfectly. And topped with yummy nuts and caramel and chocolate and why weren't you in my life sooner? Don't share this one. Eat it all yourself. The Goldmine: Oreos and pb? I'm so sold that I'm free. Seriously, ST. You're wonderful for creating this bad boy. SO good. The Las Vegas: I'm not sure if it's aptly named, but it's sinfully delicious. It's topped with mini M&M's, and you'll want the whole thing to yourself. With a name like Las Vegas, I'd expect it to be more flashy + extravagant but once I tried a bite I didn't care-- so good. I also got the birthday cupcake for a friend because it's super simple and cute, but I won't be trying it. I'll ask her what she thinks but I'm sure she'll love it. I'm so glad that you're close, Sugar Twist! Or not really? I want to eat all the things. My figure doesn't approve. I'll try the donut bar in a few weeks once I've worked off these awesome cupcakes. The BEST bakery treats! I am a baker and I am very picky when it comes to store bought baked goods! This is my one and only bakery in town that I go to. Not only do they have great baked goods, they also have a coffee bar, sandwiches and breakfast! Their cupcakes are out of this world good. They even have a "cupcake of the month". My favorite so far has been the Black Forest! Anything you get here will be delicious and never disappointing. The staff is great and it is always clean. Friendly, good selection. Go early or sprinkle donuts are usually sold out. TRY THEIR VEGAN DONUT! I love meat and am not a huge vegan person but have to be dairy-free for awhile. Their vegan donut is SO good! It actually tastes like a donut! No deprivation here. Also I crave their glazed donuts and I don't usually like donuts that much. Sugar Twist never disappoints! The owners and the staff are so friendly and so helpful. I think I can honestly say I have tasted probably about 80 percent of their items and I am in awe of their doughnut, pastry, cupcakes, and cake making skills. The Champagne Cake is my favorite cake and the Salted Carmel Turtles are a small piece of Heaven. Sugar Twist created a gorgeous and tasty Baby Shower cake for my nieces baby shower and I have to say it was the cutest cake I have ever saw. I'm getting married in November and I asked the owners to create a Lemon, blueberry cupcake creation and they are busy perfecting it as we speak. These people care about their customers and you can tell they love what they do because the quality of their product is the best in town! I wish I could give them 100 stars! read more

I had the worst experience I have ever had in a business. I went to pick up some treats for teachers and was treated so rudely by a staff member. She was bothered by every question I asked. She huffed and puffed right to my face when I asked her if she could please check what my total would be. I tried to ignore it and kept saying "thank you so much" since there was so much tension from her bad attitude. It did not help and she continued to treat me horribly. She didn't even want to give me my points that customers earn with purchases. She told me very rudely that she'd do it when she was ready. By the end of the interaction, she took my payment and just walked off. I was shocked by her actions but did not want a confrontation so I just got my treats and went to walk out. I looked over at her with a disappointed look and she screamed at me "That was so rude! You just rolled your eyes at me!!" She told ME this, after the way I was treated for no reason whatsoever. I then told her how horribly she had treated me and she continued to argue with me. I then asked to speak to a manager and the other employee told me there wasn't one. I left and called the other location and they also said there was no manager. I then emailed the owner the situation and got no response even a week later. This whole experience is still so upsetting to me. I will never return to any Sugar Twist. Especially since I didn't even get a response or apology from an owner or supervisor. I guess they are ok with this treatment of customers. So sad. read more
