I went here for the first time today and thought it was good. I had the samosas as well as the dosa masala. Both in my opinion were pretty good. We were here on a weekend afternoon, because of a chat craving that hit as we were passing by Devon. We had the samosa chat, vada pav, mango lassi and the thandai. All of those dishes were AWESOME!!! ordered some dal vada and south indian chevda. what to say? the dal vada is lightly fried making it very oily, so much so that with a little sqeeze oil will dripp down your finger. Usually these type of dishes like vade takes a little patience and time to well fry, so if the store is charging a certain heafty amount at least they can take the time to fry them properly where customers can get value for their money unfortunately which doesn't grow on trees. the same goes for the chevda. its full of oil and the taste is also oily. your tongue will be covered with so much saturated oil that you might not like any other fried food for a week. if you keep it in air tight container for a week then the chevda starts to smell of oil so badly that even the garbage bag denies to accept the trash. how difficult is it for these stores to sell quality products when they are charging no discounted price?? think twice before ording read more

I finally tried this place last Sunday, when it was both very busy and slightly confusing. My boyfriend and I shared a masala dosa and chole served with little round breads that I can't remember what they're called but probably should. Puri? My only complaint is the wait. It was so long. I felt like Bugs Bunny, staring at all the other customers imagining them turning into chicken legs (except not chicken, as this is a vegetarian restaurant). Numbers are yelled out and you have to be a very good listener, or have someone to send up to wait by the counter. The casual sorta-diner image and signs indicating "snacks" said to us "this will be fast food" but that was not so much the case. However - do not let the wait deter you! I instantly understood why it was so busy and why people had such big orders - my boyfriend and I were full with our two dishes, but I wanted more food anyway. I have been coming here for years. The food is consistently delicious. This place is a great and very affordable place to get authentic indian snacks such as samosa chat, masala dosa, and pani puri. Don't expect gourmet. Enjoy it for what it is; extremely affordable, satisfying, authentic, good portion sizes. My friend and I each had a chai and shared a masala dosa, pani puri and samosa chat. The total was $16 and we couldn't finish all the food. I highly suggest checking this place out. I haven't dabbled too much in the desserts because I don't have a sweet tooth, but if you want to try a dessert you've never heard of, this might just be the place for you. We love the neighborhood and have visited the Kabob House across the street from this place in the past (see review). But we wanted a snack after an afternoon of shopping at Patel Brothers, so we took a chance and went to Sukhadia's. After all, the sign does say "snacks". We entered at about 5:00pm on a Saturday afternoon, and the place was really busy. I was comforted by the fact that the clientele was almost exclusively South Asian. The latino line cooks and fry cook knew the recipes and how to make them so its all good. Now, if you are going to be stepping in, understand a couple of things. First, you are going to have a good long wait for your food. It is 'fast food' but served slow. If that's a deal-breaker, there are other good choices on Devon. Second, if you don't know Indian food intimately, you are going to be venturing into the unknown with the menu. I ordered some vegetable pakhoras, samosa chole, pani poori, and a vada pav. The samosa and the vada pav in particular were great. Savory, fresh out of the fryer, with great Indian flavors. A fellow diner actually come over to us to tell us how to eat the pani poori. Apparently we were conspicuous in our ignorance of the dish. It was a small 'puff' that you are to crack open, fill with chickpea masala, dunk in a cold green broth and pop into your mouth. We both appreciated the young man taking the time to educate us. Anyway, to sum it up...the wait is long and service somewhat chaotic (just like India, imagine that!), but the food is a good Chicago replica of Indian street food. Quite the mixed bag there. While they have good indian chaats, its entirely far too chaotic. We werent sure where to order for a bit there and it seemed pretty crazy. Once the food was ordered, there wasnt a good way of handing ALL of our order to us. some one else walked off with half my order because they ordered similar things right after us. perhaps take out is really the way to go. read more

We've been here twice and the word I'd use to describe what we've sampled is soggy. One trip was purely samosa oriented. And the samosas we sampled were limp, soggy, and oversized. Meh. We decided to give it another shot, and to eat in Sukhadia's since perhaps it was transportation that had led to limp samosas. This time we had the bhel puri and it was SOPPING wet, just swimming in tamarind chutney and coriander chutney. Unpleasant. I would give them zero stars but since that is not an option, I have settled for one star. I have been to the store few times before and definitely like the sweet and savory snacks served in the store. My issues are with their customer service. Being the only decent fast food joint in the area, they must feel invincible in some way. While their service has always been very slow even when the place is not crowded, recently their behavior reached a new low. I walked into the store with my husband one Saturday morning. The place seemed crowded but I wanted to get some sweets so I didn't think it will take very long. I waited for someone to take my order, some of the workers made eye contact but just ignored us. All this while they kept taking orders from other customers. After 7-10 minutes I called someone to take my order and we were told that we have to wait or we could leave. We left the store and are never going back again. If the store wants to maintain goodwill, they should have better customer service and need to be polite to everyone. I am definitely telling of my experience to all my friends and acquaintances who ask me (as an Indian) what restaurants or places to go on Devon street. read more

The old man at the checkout counter told me very rudely in Indian language 'there are no more samosas and I should get this straight, what's wrong with you?' who would treat a customer like that? Don't go her unless you're trying to eat microwaved, stale food. I ordered the aloo tikki chat and mango lassi. This restaurant has always had excellent catering and delicious food as we have used them to cater food for many events. Most recently we had ordered food for my daughters birthday party where we had chaat stations to include samosa chaat and bhel. The food was excellent and freshly prepared and everyone enjoyed it. The quantity of food is always more than sufficient and prices are very reasonable. The owner explained how to set up the chaat stations appropriately and gave instructions on how to prepare and serve the dishes. The food for catering was very well packaged with spill proof containers and was easy to transport and serve during our party. Overall it was an excellent experience and we would definitely recommend Sukhadia's to other and use there catering for other future events. read more

I had a very bad experience here! Besides the time wait of 25 mins for a simple order of kichdi, there were worms floating in the kadi they gave along the side. It was gross!! When I took it to the manager at the counter: 1. He did not apologize 2. He offered to give me chole bathura, which did not come even after 15 mins. I simply demanded my money back which he reluctantly gave. There was no apology what-so-ever!! Disgusting! I will never go back to this place. I'm not sure what was going on behind the counter when we walked in, but speedy service doesn't seem to be a priority here. We were about to place our order with one lady when she disappeared, and the gentleman who shifted behind the register seemed oblivious to our presence (and the growing line of customers behind us) as he chatted at length with a few people lingering near the counter. When we sat down to eat, we noticed all the tables could have used a good de-crumbing and wipe-down. As for the food, our samosas were decent. First time trying batata vada, so can make no comparison. They were fine. Our mango lassi was just OK--have definitely had better. A lovely place to introduce naive white people to the variegated palate of India's culinary regions. My favorite place to take people who think nasty Saag Paneer and flavorless butter Naan are typical Indian food. A great place to try South Indian and Gujarat flavors. Not the best for either, but the only place I know in Chicago of its kind. Kamdar plaza has some good chaat as well, but I can't go back ever since their Patra gave me a severe case of gastric distress... One summer I stopped by this place to get a drink with a lady friend who watched the entire reverse discrimination exchange that followed. The older man at the counter (I think it is the owner) ignored me, turned his back on me while I said, "hello" more than a few times and I literally had to show him my cash before he even acknowledged me. I did not budge from in front of the register. When I told him I wanted he said, "that's all?" I thought I would buy something else (caving in to pressure). He had an attitude towards me. He sold me a box of rancid sweets for twice the price. I had to wait literally for half an hour as people came and went while my drink was prepared. The girls in the kitchen snickered and smiled watching this exchange. The bathrooms were dirty as well as the tables not being wiped things on the floor etc.. I don't think I would ever want to eat here - there are better places in the neighborhood with good food and much friendlier service. Today when I went there I thought I would see if he was behind the counter which determined whether or not I would walk into the place - luckily not - the younger lady was fairly polite to me and gave me what I ordered very quickly and it was hot. The man that was extremely rude to me was there in the back somewhere but was not the one to wait on me. If you can avoid him at all costs, do so. He is ruining his own business with his rude behavior towards people. I don't know if this treatment is directed only towards other races, or women by themselves. I'm inclined to think it is possibly both. I can't believe someone is that ignorant to think that women don't have money to spend in a place of business (I am also a business owner) if they are not accompanied by a man. If I only want a drink why should I have to buy anything else? Is it that much of an effort to ring it up? Do not judge future customers just because they order one thing at the current moment. If this place wants to stay in business they need to be polite TO EVERYONE, no matter what race, male or female (accompanied or not accompanied by a man/husband etc.). Building good will is what a business usually tries to do to become more profitable and earn a place of respect in the neighborhood, not the opposite. Why did I go back? To prove a point - I deserve polite equal treatment. I can't speak to the quality of the food that is served, just the unfriendly and rude attitude of the owner which is a huge turn-off. I started going by here in high school for the jalebi. The texture and taste are incredible. If you haven't had the opportunity, try some. The service here usually leaves a little to be desired, but if you're nice enough and ask the right question they'll usually offer little samples of various treats and candies so you can figure out what you're in the mood for. It's a snack shop. Google. Probably best not to use their restroom. Questionable, at best... usually dirty. They are all mostly deep fried snacks... and mostly good. The dosa is much too greasy (but good), the jalebi is usually fresh. Always have enjoyed their kajju katri. Sometimes buy their masala boondi. Yum! Are you getting a bottled drink from the fridge? They have a self serve bottle opener at the cash register. Also... please use a straw or wipe the heck out of the rim of that bottle.
