This place was not very crowded on a Friday night, which was sort of concerning. Except the food here is excellent, so I'm not sure why no one was here! At the point we went here, they were not allowed to serve liquor, but that's okay! I was so full after my meal anyway. We started with the spring rolls, which were great as an order came with enough spring rolls for two. My husband ordered some curry and I got the drunken noodles. I liked that they can adjust the spice level on the drunken noodles since I can't handle the spice so well. The other couple we were with ordered one of the specials, which looked amazing. There are not a lot of thai options in Connecticut. I lived in San Francisco and Los Angeles for many years where thai restaurants were abundant. Sukhothai was...ok. I had the mango chicken which sounded great but was pretty average. I really liked their yellow curry though. That dish was above average in my opinion. read more

I was cranky from a horrible haircut, so decided that I was incapable of making dinner. So, my husband and I decided to visit Sukhothai, since we had driven past it several times saying the common, "Oh hey, we should eat there some time!" So, we did. We ordered two appetizers- spring rolls and fried dumplings, the iced Thai tea, Pad Thai with chicken, and the Spicy Eggplant that was on special. First, the appetizers: the spring rolls were well seasoned and crispy. They were just really small; however, we did get like 8 of them, so I think it equaled 3 large ones that you would have expected. The fried chicken dumplings were good as well. Each came with a homemade sweet and sour dipping sauce. The BEST item was the iced Thai tea. Traditionally, I'll nurse my drink over the course of my whole meal...however, I had that thing drained before the appetizer arrived! I'm still licking my lips. Next, the dinners. So, the Pad Thai had a bit of a burnt egg smell..."dog food smell" according to my husband. However, the taste was fine. He said that he wouldn't order it again, but he wasn't disappointed. Secondly, the spicy eggplant dish was comprised of mixed fresh veggies with well seasoned large chunks of eggplant covered in a light brown, beef broth(?) and a side of rice (white or brown- I got brown). I enjoyed every bite. It was good. Everything tasted homemade and fresh and the prices were reasonable. Also, I can't stress enough that service was friendly. Really, we had a nice experience. I don't eat very much Thai, but this was my 2nd time in a week (the first at Tamarind in downtown W. Hartford). So, let's compare. The tom yum soup was way greasier at Tamarind, but the shrimp were cooked perfectly there. Sukhotai's were rubbery and overcooked (but to be fair, we did take out, so they might've overcooked on the way home). Flavors were more refined in general (drunken noodles) at Tamarind, but the Bangkok duck (deep fried) at Sukhothai was oodles better than Tamarind's. Solid meal... if you combined elements of both restaurants, I'd end up with a 5 star review. Separate? Both shine in places, and thus both are 4 stars! read more

Very disappointed...what happened to the quality??!? I've eaten at Sukhothai probably at least 20 times in the last few years. If it wasn't for prior experience, I'd probably rate them even lower, but I'm only dropping my review to three stars...for now. I've been three times in the last 2 months. One of the trips was great per usual, but the other two were simply awful. Most recently was tonight, which was take-out this time, although 95% of the time I dine in. I was told my food would be ready in 10 minutes. "Wow" I thought. Got the food home. Was not only some of the worst Thai food I've ever had, but also some of the worst food of any kind. It was a dish I've had (from them specifically) at least 10 times, but this time it had been clearly reheated. The noodles were indescribably mushy, to the point of being practically a paste. They were all clumped together, and the overall flavor of the dish just wasn't there. I threw away the leftovers. That NEVER happens...usually I literally leave the plate clean when it's from Sukhothai. Perhaps it's a new chef, or they try to save costs by making large batches, and the fact that they weren't busy meant it wasn't selling fast enough? Not an excuse for me though. Charge me more, or give me less. If I want a heaping mountain of so-so food I'll get Chinese Take-out. . The whole experience just leaves me feeling so disappointed and deflated. I've brought endless people there, and told so many people how great it is. If anyone goes there based on my recommendations and gets served a dish like I did today, I'll feel humiliated and discredited. I've been so happy there in the past that I'm sure I'll give them another chance, but I'm not all that keen on the idea. It'll take several good meals in a row to get that star back from me, and one more bad meal to lose me to competing restaurants forever. read more

I went back with more friends this time for a birthday, and while our experience was a little less great, it's still an awesome restaurant that I would go back to any time. I docked off a star because some of my friends and I ordered curry dishes and it was a little watery. Not the best curry I've had. I'd stick with the noodle dishes. I'm going to agree with everyone... the service is a bit slow, but certainly not hours. The staff is always friendly and courteous. For a date, or getting together with family; this can be a really nice place. They do make the dishes fresh, and that has a lot to do with the time it takes to get to you. If you want fast food, go to McDonalds. (Great Quote: You can have your food done Fast, Good and cheap. Most places can do one, great places give you two, nowhere will give you all three) The Pad Thai here is really good. I don't agree that the other dishes lack inspiration, but I haven't had many of their currys. I have had some amazing salmon dishes. Their fried ice-cream is pretty good too. I'd suggest going with the specials, or the pad thai. read more

This was a great stop for lunch. The food was great and I had called in the order for my coworkers and I. There were 6 of us total and they had the order just right. I had wonton soup and drunken noodles and everything was cooked perfectly. The spice level mixed with sweetness level was perfect. I will definitely be back. Thai gardens in Middletown is still my favorite but this place is closer to my home and a close second in flavor. The only complaint I had was that everyone's food wasn't ready when we got there and I called a full half hour- forty five minutes before we arrived and we said we would be there at noon. I was at Sukhothai Restaurant a few weeks ago. I'm not a fan of the food from this region. I can't pin point it but if I'm not mistaken the Thai food here resembles the food served in the country (Southern Thailand). Lots of fish sauce and thick shrimp paste laced chunky bits of ginger and spices. Flavorful yes but frankly I'm not a fan because I don't like ginger flakes all over the place. Does it taste like something you would find in a Thai home? Yep but I prefer authentic Thai restaurant style meals when I'm having Thai at a restaurant. When I go out for Thai I want it to be something special. When I think of eating out Thai I think of wonderful ornate dishes with tons of Kaffir Lime leaves. This place wasn't as great as I wanted to be because I kept comparing it to my other favorite Thai places. So be warned if you like Southern Thai food then you'll like Sukhothai. I prefer flavors from the Northern region and the big city because of the Chinese influence (lighter flavors and less fish sauce and not as salty). The price was a tad too much for what was offered. I ordered a "meat salad" Yuam Nau and was totally disappointed. I understand there are different ways to prepare a dish but I was totally disappointed when my steak salad arrived. Traditionally the meat is grilled and then sliced. You can tell they sliced and then cooked the meat. Flavors all came from Mae Ploy's chili sauce. I could have made that myself, chili sauce and fish sauce. My dining partner enjoyed it but I was disappointed because I was looking forever to something "special". The process isn't time consuming but it does decrease the amount of coconut milk. I like my curries with a little coconut oil grease on top. Where was the Kaffir Lime leaves??? We paid $18 for that dish and I regret it. The hot basil with mixed seafood wasn't too bad. But gosh where were my basil leaves?? I know for a fact that basil leaves are dirt cheap when buying in bulk. They probably used 3 leaves in the preparation of this dish. The dish is supposed to be red but if you look at my pics they dish was brown meaning they used shrimp paste to give it some flavor. The dishes were dirty. I'm going to assume they don't have a dishwasher and someone is manually washing the dishes. The dishwasher does a decent job on the front of the plates but the back is just plain gross. Now the service was decent. I'll give them points for being nice and attentive but I can't justify going back simply because 1) I don't like food from the South 2) way too many shortcuts in the meal preparation 3) dirty dishes. Based on those factors I'll stick to something in Hartford. The combination of the dirty dishes and overuses of shrimp paste made it very hard for me to swallow. I've been to Sukhothai a number of times and never been disappointed. It isn't much for atmosphere (I can still picture the coffee bar and stage from The Equator), but don't let that fool you. They have a good sized menu, daily specials board, a selection of Asian beverages, and always offer generous portions - a rarity in Thai restaurants. I get the steamed mussels appetizer every time I'm here. The sweet and spicy sauce they come with is excellent! read more

Oh yes, Main Street. Thank you!! I love good Thai food, and Sukhothai has it. They have a full menu, with all the traditional dishes you could ask for. The Coconut Soup with tofu was soo yummy, hot and flavorful. I chose roasted duck for dinner, which was outstanding! The service was spot on, as well, bringing our drinks quickly, and always filling our water glasses. The staff also seemed to know and be quite friendly with some of the other guests, which says to me, 'they have a lot of regulars'. Always a good sign! Sukhothai is a great place to stop for either lunch or dinner as you stroll along Main Street in downtown Manchester. Be advised that they are closed mid-day, between 3 and 5, I think. A solid Thai restaurant with a good sized menu and a spacious and clean (if not sparse) dining room. We went on a Tuesday and it was obviously slow, but there was plenty of waitstaff (two different people waited on us) and the food came out without a long wait. Plastered all over every table were advertisements for a Thai beer called Chang, so naturally I went for it. Smooth and slightly sweet, it's the standard lager for the rest of the world. Not my usual cup of tea, but it went very well with the Mussel Curry I got, which was full of some very fresh and very large mussels. The curry itself is like most Thai curry, which is to say watery, but the flavor was intense, and right in my sweet spot as far as heat. I wish we had more rice to sop up the curry, there was a lot left in my bowl when they took it away. Got an order of the spring rolls as well, but these were small and fried in wonton wrappers. I guess the ones I was thinking of are "fresh" spring rolls in rice paper and paired with a peanut sauce. Oh well. I was dipping these into my leftover curry when a waitress came and asked if she could take away our plates. I said to take my girlfriends and leave mine, I wanted to dip the remaining spring rolls, but after a back and forth the waitress smiled and took them anyway. Visited 12/20/2013 for dinner with a group of 9. General impression: a run-of-the-mill neighborhood Thai restaurant. The atmosphere was a bit tired when we visited, with somewhat dated and uninspired decor. Most tables were empty at 6pm on a Friday, so the staff was hanging out and chatting in the back throughout most of the evening. Food: my pad see ew was a bit over-salted, but the flavor was generally on point. My friends' curries smelled quite good, though I've definitely seen more vibrant vegetables in a dish, even at this price range. The Thai iced tea didn't quite strike the perfect balance of a tea flavor strong enough to cut through the sweetness of the condensed milk without being too harsh (probably the result of a cheap tea that was scalded or oversteeped, resulting in an astringent yet unflavorful brew), so I'd probably skip it if I ever returned here. Ice cream with fried bananas was great, with the bananas fried in a crispy dough shell and ice cream flavors including coconut and green tea. Overall: not a particularly stand-out culinary experience. If you are in the neighborhood and have your heart set on Thai, this place might do... otherwise, there are probably better options to be found. read more

Sukhothai is my local go-to, hole-in-the-wall Thai place. They are nestled on a corner of Main Street in Manchester, with plenty of free street parking. What I love about this place is that the food is always so very fresh, and cooked to order incredibly fast. You can get in and get out, if you're in a hurry, or kick back and savor every bite if you're on a date. It has a great, cozy atmosphere. I've had the spicy pad thai, the mango yellow curry, and the spicy drunken noodle, all of which were great. I will say that the portion size has diminished as bit over the years, but alas, the food is still a great value. As far as getting the spice level of your dish right, order one up from the level you're used to, as they approach heat very carefully here. Or better yet, just get some chilies on the side. Can't go wrong there. This is not a super fancy, frilly, showboat Thai place. It's just a little Thai nook that can satisfy your noodle or curry needs, in a low-key spot. So, don't expect crazy presentation, or fancy decor. Do expect to have great conversation in the small dining room, over yummy food, with the inevitably interesting company you've brought with you. read more

I live down the street and was excited about the potential for gaining a Go-To Thai restaurant. I ordered in on my way home from work, and the lady that answered the phone was so pleasant---seriously just call her when you're having a bad day, she's so happy it makes you happier. I ordered the panang curry (extra spicy) and beef pad see ew. The panang curry definitely did not disappoint with the level of spice, however it was quite oily and the chicken wasn't all too appealing, but the taste was all there. The beef bad see ew was advertised to include chinese broccoli (my fav!) however, it had about one piece of chinese and the rest contained regular pieces of broccoli, strange. The taste was also sweeter than my liking (i've yet to find a Thai restaurant's pad see ew that compares to my Go-To back home!) Overall, its good Thai, not great but good. The service is great, and the dining room seems pleasant for a night out to eat. read more

While searching for food options on Yelp, I found Main Street in Manchester. This Thai restaurant is right next to a taco restaurant, and across the street from an Indian/Halal spot. My party and I headed to this spot, to decide which specific restaurant we would visit once we arrived. What a cute downtown area! Sukothai is in a great spot, and they're a great restaurant! The layout is a little weird, but the food and service more than makes up for it. And talk about a family business - the waiter was teaching his young daughter about the business, and had her deliver the check and pick it up. She was super cute - and everyone was smiling and jovial. The food was great, too! And they were great at filling up my water glass, which is always an issue for me, especially when eating spicy food. Their spring rolls are the tiniest things I've ever seen. I swear, I've taken vitamins larger than those things. I got the pineapple rice with shrimp, it was delicious. I like this place and will definitely come back for more! In that case, the food is actually fairly good - but in my humble opinion, not worth the incredible wait. The waiting just takes all the fun out of dining here and that's really too bad. Over the past several years I've been here about half a dozen times. My sense of the place is pretty consistent. The food rates more than the 3 stars I've given it. The ingredients are always fresh, well prepared, and very tasty. The menu offers many options, although emery too much of the fish is deep fried. All salmon choices are deep fried. This is truly a disappointment! The service and communication with wait staff is also disappointing. Last night was no exception. It was very hard to communicate my needs, although I was only requesting minor changes. She assured me that all soup broth was vegetarian, but then indicated the two soups I should choose from. The bathrooms are pretty awful and need to be redone! They might be clean, but both the men and women in our group noticed the poor conditions. read more
