Well stopped by for the first time and it was pretty decent for a steak house in Alaska. Went for tapas because the prices for everything else seemed pretty ridiculous. Other than that I wish they had a bit more smaller local beers on tap. I would say over all pretty nice experience the food was good. I would say my favorite thing was the spicy shrimp egg-rolls and the pork belly. Other than that the tuna was okay and the cheesesteak egg-rolls were decent. Well, Sullivan's is okay. Nothing special, a very run of the mill steakhouse chain that's on the fancier side - though I wouldn't put them above similar chains such as Ruth's Chris or The Capital Grille, which aren't that great in my opinion either. The service was odd. After we placed our drink orders and ordered our food my soup came out first, then 5 minutes later my wife's Caeser salad... then a few minutes after that the bread. Caeser was okay, the dressing fell short flavor wise. Croutons were nice and crunchy and the romaine was fresh. The shrimp and lobster bisque wasn't quite right, not as creamy as a typical bisque and didn't have that touch of sherry flavor you expect. Still tasted fine. Scallops were a tad overcooked and oversalted, but the sauce was sweet and creamy so it balanced it out. Ribeye was solid, no real complaints there. Came out medium rare as ordered and had a nice sear on it! For shareable sized sides the asparagus was kind of funny, 5 spears of asparagus didn't really strike me as very shareable even for two. But, the serving utensil provided was a fork... that they put inside of the dish they were serving the asparagus in? Lifting up a parmesan crusted fork wasn't ideal, again odd service choice. Bananas Foster bread pudding was delightful, and a nice saving grace to the evening. The noise was also insane! A private party was shouting and yelling during the majority of our meal, felt like being at a Dave and Busters. My husband and I have recently started frequenting Sullivan's more often and the food is always pretty great! We love coming for the Business lunch. 3 courses for $24.99, what a steal! As for dinner, the sides are Ala Carte so it can really add up if you're on a budget. We tried the Mac and Cheese and the Bacon/Cheese Scalloped Potatoes and both sides were amazing. Our filets were perfectly cooked and I love that they offer a choice of sauce on your steak. Lots of yummy add on's available for an extra charge and overall you're gonna spend a pretty penny here but the ambiance is nice with low lighting for a "fancier" feeling date in Alaska. I feel like the food is overpriced for what it is. The crab cakes were mediocre and lacking flavor. The loaded baked potato was a baked potato, nothing special for an additional $13. Our server was nice and the food came out quickly. The entire restaurant was smoky from the grill. Entertainment wasn't bad. Over the course of a week, we dined at this establishment twice. We chose the Bar Bites Menu because it seemed like there were some great items. Overall we tried the; Beef Wellington Bites, Cheesesteak Egg Rolls, Shrimp Egg Rolls, Calamari, and the Prix Fixe Menu from the dinner menu. The cheesesteak and shrimp egg rolls were delicious and our only favorites. There was some nice flavor to the protein and crunch to the wrap. Next, the calamari was not tasty. The sweet chili glaze on top was not a great compliment to the chewy, barely breaded appetizer. The beef wellington bites caught my attention before arriving the location. I was surprised during our first visit when the waiter informed us that they were sold out from the night before, yet still thrilled to return and try them. So, we did return and when I tell you that I was let down, I truly was! If you have ever tried a beef wellington, you know what the inside is supposed to look and taste like, so that's why I was thoroughly disappointed. The same shaved meat(filet mignon) they used for the cheesesteak egg rolls was the same stuffing inside the bites. In my opinion, that was not a good decision because when you cut into the bites they appeared mushy. The items we chose from the Prix Fixe Menu were the Shrimp and Lobster Bisque, Ribeye, and Bananas Foster Bread Pudding. The bisque was fine and had good flavor, I'd recommend adding a few slices of toast/bread. The ribeye was cooked to our liking and had nice flavor to it. Now, the bread pudding was perfect! It came with vanilla ice cream on top and was essentially the 'cherry on top.' The cocktails were pretty good, I would recommend the Gold Rush and Spicy Margarita! Took my family to dinner as a treat before we dropped my pops off at the airport. Very busy so I was glad I made reservations. We didn't order any apps since we were on a time crunch. My partner had the filet, while my brother and I ordered the New York steaks. My dad wanted to be different and got the ahi dinner. My steak was Oscar style and came with four spears of asparagus and the mashed potato's was served family style. My brothers steak arrived lonely on the plate. I expected more from a $50 steak. Everything was good but not great. What was excellent was their banana foster bread pudding. It's been few years since we decided to give this place another chance. Last time lobster bisque was amazingly salty I couldn't eat it, 38 dollar lobster was just boiled I couldn't swallow it. I saw promotion for the restaurant decided to stop for dinner before we go see Van Gogh. Omg it was so ridiculous we started laughing. We waited over an hour for appetizer had to tell waitress we have to leave soon. Cesar salad had a bunch of romain lettuce with charred croutons I thought I broke my teeth. Meat was so overcooked even waitress thought they were overcooked! We decided not to eat meat and pay. They overcharged me. Had to wait for manager to correct my bill. So disappointed with our food experience here. Ordered takeout and the delivery time was 60 minutes later than estimated. (This was due to the restaurant, not the delivery service) When we did get the food it was cold. Not lukewarm even. Chicken and mashed potatoes looked nothing like advertised on the online menu, the salad was a sad heap of droopy greens with nothing else - again, not as advertised - and I was concerned to even eat some due to the concern of how long it had been sitting out. Lastly, I called multiple times and the phone rang endlessly so I never even got to talk to someone to remedy the disaster of a meal. Will not be eating here again after this experience. read more

Hands down this is in the top 3 fine dining restaurants in Anchorage! The atmosphere is very inviting for fine dinning dress and etiquette. Atmosphere was very relaxing, yet quiet enough with friends to enjoy a great time with them over conversation. I was very impressed by the extensive wine menu and the nearby wine room that you're able to see the wines as you order from the delicious menu. We started with a Philly Cheese egg-roll, which was fabulously paired with a red wine. The salads and soups are unique and very good. The bread was warm and seemed to me made fresh! The menu has many options to choose from but my absolute favorite was the lamb chops. The steak was pretty good all in all, so I would give it a three out of five. It didn't seem to have much flavoring to it besides a regular steak. The sweet potatoes and regular potatoes we're done to perfection! Finally dessert, don't skip out here! Their cheesecake pairs very well as you finish your wine, or move on to a port. I made Thanksgiving reservations a month ago and my husband and I were very much looking forward to Thanksgiving at Sullivans! The two of us arrived on the dot for our reservation. After checking in, and waiting for 15 minutes the hostesses told us we could continue to wait (for an undeterminable time) for a table or sit in the bar. No apologies- basically take it or leave it. Normally, I would have left and gone somewhere else, but nothing else was open that we could get into without a reservation. How can you not have tables available for people who make reservations??? Without any reasonable options available we opted not to wait and sat in the bar. Not sure why we needed a reservation. Once seated we ordered from the fixed Thanksgiving menu which had been advertised repeatedly over the last month. Dinner arrived and the food was good. However, I kept getting an aroma of Propane or diesel fuel. The smell was strong enough that I finally asked a staff person what the smell was. She finally figured out it was the smell of a propane torch being turned on to burn an herb for one of the drinks being made at the bar. I highly recommend the management consider taking the drink off the menu or figure out a different method than the propane torch. The smell is absolutely over powering, it was like eating a meal sitting behind a bus with the engine running. There were three options for dessert, one of which was no longer available. So each one of use picked one of the 2 desserts left. We were then told a second dessert was no longer available. So we said give us the one dessert that was left for both of us. The wait staff came back a third time to tell us this was also no longer available. She was very apologetic, and we did end up with a very nontraditional dessert which was okay. But, how do you have a fixed menu, that people make reservations for and not only do you run out of tables but now you also run out of food??? My husband immigrated here so Thanksgiving is a very special and important holiday for us. We have come to Sullivans for drinks and bar food many, many times and we will continue to come for that. However, I will never trust this restaurant to provide ambiance or a dining experience for any special holiday or ocassion. This event was so poorly planned and executed. *Honestly* The only reason I'm giving them 2 stars is because our server was nice. I am typically someone who gives high reviews but this is the second time I have visited this restaurant and received slow service and over-priced/sub-par meals. Upon arrival and being seated my wife and I were very happy, because our host was nice and accommodating and got us a table right away, but after being seated is when things began to go down hill. I will say the overall ambiance of the restaurant was nice, not too loud, dim lighting, what you would expect of a steak house but nothing that blew my socks off. Our waiter was slow to get to our table to even get us water, and the restaurant was not very busy. I used to be a server and so I understand and am very patient when servers are overwhelmed, but I do not believe this was the case, as I could see multiple servers moseying and standing in/around the main dining room. I ordered a New York Strip med rare, which I realize is not the nicest cut, but it was chewy, over cooked, and not as high of quality as I would have wished for a $40+ steak. A few of our sides were cold, and my wife and I try not to be "those people" but one of the sides, mashed potatoes, was so cold they were unenjoyable, and so we sent that one dish back and the server brought it back out probably 10-15 minutes later, even colder than before. My wife and I will typically order a couple cocktails each when dining out but the first drinks we got were, to us, not worth the price, and so we ended up only getting those drinks. They also were somewhat more delayed to get to our table than expected for how busy the restaurant was. Now all of this could have been the server having an off night or something but this was the second or third time we had visited Sullivan's and thought maybe the first couple times were a one off as well but after we started seeing a pattern we figured a review was justified, in the hopes of saving other yelp users' money. We think there are better options in Anchorage for a nice night out at a steak house and have since, not returned to Sullivan's. Note: this review was sitting in my drafts and it's been a over a year or so since visiting, so management may have changed and things may be better, but from recent reviews it doesn't seem to have changed much. Perhaps the best meal I've had in Anchorage. On Thursday night on a work trip to Alaska, we sat at the bar for a late dinner. We experienced both great service and wonderful jazz music by a trio of middle aged musicians and vocalists. The trio was fantastic--Contemporary songs, strong voices that were always on key. The highlight of my evening was the cheeseburger egg rolls. I don't think I have ever tasted anything more delicious or delightful. It was a party in my mouth. This appetizer features filet minion, cheese and other add-ins and folded in a pastry dough and then deep fried and finished with a sweet and spicy sauce. This appetizer was so good my coworker ordered another one for his entree. The ambience at Sullivan's is top knotch and the service was impeccable--courteous and attentive. food was all together good they went a little to rare on some of the steaks but the service was terrible his name was Mclan and he took an hour and a half to bring our appetizers and it was 2 and a half hours until we got our meals and we saw so many people come in after us and got there's meals and left before we even got ours and then the manager Nicole was just using excuses for why it took so long such as "sorry the kitchen is taking a while" and not a simple sorry or anything like that and then when we said something to them they basically blew us off do not go To this restaurant unless you want to risk staying a lot longer then intended. read more

Since we were staying in Anchorage on Christmas day and all dining rooms were closed, we decided to at least treat ourselves to a quality meal in holiday celebration. We were frequent patrons of the Sullivans in Nebraska when we lived there and hoped this one would meet the standards and quality we'd come to expect. Apparently we weren't the only ones thinking a mouthwatering perfectly seasoned steak sounded like the ideal Christmas meal because it was very difficult to get an order in, so I advise calling early. After several attempts we were successful and our order was ready on-time when we arrived. While the hostess was a bit flustered with everything she had to do, she was still very nice and helpful. After getting back to our room we were pleased to find our food still nice and warm and ready for us to dive in. We shared a caesar salad which they correctly prepared without croutons for my gluten allergy and the lettuce was crisp and fresh with a generous sprinkling of parmesan. The shaved brussel sprouts with bacon and side of mashed potatoes were delicious and generous portions that were more than the two of us could eat. The real show stopper though was the perfectly seasoned and spot on temperature prep of both our steaks. The 8oz filets were absolutely flawless which is pretty darn impressive for 1. Christmas rush with probably an understaffed kitchen 2. Kept warm for take out without over cooking and 3. Just take out in general is tricky to get perfect with steak. Thanks to Sullivans, even though we couldn't be home for Christmas dinner, we got to be together and had the prefect meal. Sounds like a Christmas miracle to me. read more

We went to Sullivan's for our Christmas Eve dinner. This is something we have done each Christmas Eve and always loved it. This time it was the worst experience. Reservations at 7. We did not get our food until 9pm. They had run out of the sidedish we ordered and what came with the meal. Instead of a twice baked we got a few tablespoons of grayish cold mash. The food was awful. Lukewarm and truly mediocre. The filet minion was very thin and not tender at all. I thought it was more like sirloin pieces. We should have gotten the hint and left when we saw numerous other people leave. But we hung on hoping for a good meal after a long wait. We regretted not bailing and just going to Texas Roadhouse. At least the food would have been hot! A 300 dollar disappointment! Such a waste! Oh and the man in charge ( manager?) When told how disappointed we were said " I have only worked here 5 days!" . Went here twice during our stay on Anchorage. First visit was with the tour group we were traveling with. Service was surly and food was mediocre. The acoustics in the room were so poor I couldn't hear the person sitting across from me. Can't imagine what the cost paid was for such a disappointing visit. Our party of 7 had confirmed reservations for a wheelchair accessible table at 6:00 p.m. on November 28--we waited in a seriously overcrowded entrance until 7:30 p.m. when we were taken to the supposedly accessible table (I am a disabled vet) it required access via three steps with no ramp available . No other seating was offered that was compatible with a wheelchair. After two others in the group assisted me up the steps we were seated in a cramped corner table with no room to move on one side. Now about the food-after ordering our drinks , appetizers and meals-- service to the table was spotty and spread over at least 50 minutes. when my wife and I received our Thanksgiving $50 turkey dinners they were stone cold so we returned them. the server brought back two plates that had obviously been over-salted heavily by someone in the back of the house and were inedible. And the turkey was obviously a premade turkey roast that was presented dry and salty and not the roast turkey breast on our first plates --and it had in addition to the heavy salt an off taste. After one bite both my wife and I did not eat any more . this was , no doubt, the worst thanksgiving dinner in my long experience. Sullivan's you have some work to do. read more

The restaurant is warm, welcoming and tastefully decorated. Our booth was perfect. Our server was Dan, who was friendly. We ordered the ahi appetizer - was very good. We saw others have a bread plate at their table, but we didn't get one til we asked for it. We both ordered filet mignon, and for sides, chose the sautéed steakhouse mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, and au gratin potatoes. I also had a Caesar salad, which was tasty and well presented. Every course, from bread to dessert, was rushed. I hadn't even finished my salad when they brought out the steaks. The au gratin potatoes were lukewarm on the outside, and downright cold on the inside. Dan took them away to get a new order, but it took so long to get the hot potatoes, that we were already finished with the remaining items. We'd thought that Dan might take the potatoes off the bill, but nope. As he was clearing our table he told us that one dessert would be on the house, to make up for the potato issue - but when he returned to our table, he just handed us the bill. We asked about the dessert he mentioned, and he said "oh yeah, what would you like?" This was a Monday night, it wasn't busy at all. I can't understand why they were in such a rush to get us out of there. The rush was awkward and uncomfortable. Seven o clock reservation did not get served till 830 pm knowing good and well it was a birthday dinner. I was seated facing the chefs/cooks and although entertaining. It was far from what I would expect from an upscale steakhouse. Waiters, waitresses and the expeditor, constantly hung around, leaning on walls taking to each other and the cooks.. I have worked for 25 years in various food and beverage management positions in hotels and restaurants. The behaviors I witnessed were so unprofessional for an establishment such as this. At one point one of the cooks actually put the tip of his knife into the counter and placed his bearded chin on the handle. I presume he was cutting meat with this knife. Yuck. Two training sayings that were drilled into my employees and might help here, are, "If you've got time to clean, you've got time to clean" "Full hands in, full hands out" Good luck. I'm consistently happy with the food and service here. I pretty much always sit at the bar and the staff is friendly and remembers you after a couple visits. It's really nice. The atmosphere is also really cool and on more than one occasion I've had great conversation with another solo diner at the bar. I usually have a hard time deciding what to get because there's so many great options. Cheesesteak egg rolls, French onion soup, steak salad, bar burger...love them all! The food has always been outstanding. The individual servers are quite attentive and kind. The hostesses & management leave much to be desired. It is always inexplicably smoky in there. The bathrooms rival out of your local gas station. Often, the hostess is congregate in the front and literally ignore you until you are standing before them and then they have the loveliest personalities when they finally pay attention to you. If you can wade through this murky pond of mediocrity to get to the food, and it all comes out at the same time, More power to you.
