This is one of my go to restaurants for great tasting Mediterranean food. My favorite is the Kofta Kebab plate. I always ask for extra sumac and tahini sauce which they make there. I ate at Sumac over the weekend and this place is such a hidden gem! The Hubs and I shared the Mezze Sampler for 2 and a Greek salad. The sampler platter came with hummus, baba ghanoush, falafel, dolma, tzatziki and fresh pita bread. I am by no means a falafel expert, but these were the best I've ever had! They came out piping hot, perfectly crisp and not greasy. I enjoyed all the dips as well, particularly the baba ghanoush. The Greek salad was pretty standard, but fresh. My eldest ordered the Lamb & Beef Shawrma Wrap with a side of fries. They were very happy with their meal, as they are a huge fan of lamb. They also particularly enjoyed the seasoning on the fries and was scared to ask for more, but the father and son who run the place were very kind. They even offered to hire them one day, jokingly. We ordered from Sumac Mediterranean Grill for our chill stay-at-home wedding anniversary. We had Mediterranean food for our wedding plus I've recently discovered sumac as a spice that've enjoyed cooking with. 1. Mezze sampler Comes with hummus, babaganoush, dolma, and falafel. Hummus and dolma pretty good. The babaganoush had a good smoky flavor. The falafel seemed more dark and burned than normal but it tasted goos. More crispy on the outside with sesame seed. 5/5 2. Seasoned Fries Comes with 3 ketchup packets and is seasoned with... salt. Nothing to rave about it's probably frozen fries from Smart and Final or Costco Business and not worth a statin. Pass! Although, they are simple and crisped nicely. I would only order if you were coerces to eating here but only like American fast food. 2/5 3. Shawarma Feast Plate They weren't joking about the feast. The meat slices were so thick. Flavor was pretty good. Maybe on the salty side? I was really looking forward to the salad but it was not there though it was in the description. Chicken had a good flavor but kind of dry. The beef and lamb were also flavored well. 5/5 4. Rice pudding Not your roommate's abuela's arroz con leche. Maybe that's an unfair comparison but I was not a fan. The rice seems to be normal rice cooked maybe in milk and sugar so there is some white paste. Then topped generously with cinnamon. Overall, the dessert was kind of dry. Maybe this is how it is supposed to be, but I personally would not reorder. 3/5 5. Beef and Lamb wrap I don't normally like wraps but I saw the picture and it looked good. I got a slice from my husband and it was pretty good. I liked the ratio if veggies to meat and I liked the spicy sauce. 5/5 I wish we had gotten the side salad, that the fries had seasoning, and that the rice pudding was more moist. Service is quick and super friendly. Restaurant was clean. All the food items are priced decently. Always looking for great Mediterrean places, and although it's not close to me, I stumbled upon trying Sumac as I reminisce about the old days with Planet Granite. The location itself is a little awkward because it's right on El Camino - but parking was easy enough when I was there. The staff was really nice, and our party chose to sit outside in the back during nicer weather. The food itself was just alright - and also noticeably a smaller portion than what we're used to (especially with higher menu prices.) So that being said, I can say it's a not a terrible place to go to if making a decision elsewhere becomes hairy, but we definitely wanted a bit more in both quantity and flavor. read more

I think that was the most unexpected thing for me. I like how they cut it into little triangles. The white sauce that came with the food was very good and creamy, yet it tasted healthy. I got a falafel plate for pickup here recently. I am by no means an expert, but I have eaten a lot of falafel around here and this place makes the best falafel I have ever had. The exterior is crunchy and the inside is soft and moist and so fresh. You can tell from the moment you stick a fork inside it that it's different in texture from other falafel. The rice was also delicious, seasoned and warm. I picked hummus as the side so that came with soft pita. The hummus was really smooth. It was a lovely meal! My friend recommended this place for us to eat and it was definitely one of the better Mediterranean places that I've been to. Getting to Sumac is really straight forward, its on the right side while you're driving down the main road and there is usually plenty of parking at the back lot (especially during lunch). The vibe in there is pretty chill too. Theres definitely plenty of seating inside and theres even a bar area where you can talk to the staff while you're getting and waiting for your food. The staff themselves are really friendly and were really easy to talk to while I was there. They even gave me some free tea while we were waiting. The food itself was really good. We ordered a hummus (that comes with pita bread), falafel (6 pieces, they were huge!), and I ordered a chicken kebab entree while my friend ordered the kofta kebab plate. Let me tell you, the falafel there is probably some of the best falafel I have had (and I've had a lot!) It had a great crunchy texture on the outside and a nice soft texture in the inside. The hummus was pretty good too, I loved how they added some tahini which is definitely something I wish more places did. My chicken kebab was honestly pretty okay, but I definitely enjoyed the kofta kebab that my friend ordered. We've been here plenty of times, but haven't ever reviewed. Ordered Chicken souvlaki for son, Gyro Wrap for my husband, Kofta Kebab Wrap for myself, and an order of fries for all to share. Ordered on their website and arrived when told - fries had just come out and order was ready to go. I ate hot fries driving home with everone's lunch - my reward, right? They were hot. As they hould be! (shoulder check to a different Greek place I reviewed...) Everyone enjoyed their food, especially with the free extra tahini and hot sauce and the included tatziki. The chicken souvlaki was tasty but could have used more chicken - especially when considering how much gyro was in my husband's wrap. It worked out though because I gave a third of my Kofta to my son to finish. May I suggest instead of 4 chunks of chicken, you put in 5 or 6? Still yummy. All of it was yummy. read more

I drive past this place every single day and finally tried it. God knows I've been missing out bc the Hummus, the kofta and the musaka were some of the most delicious I've ever had. Especially the kofta, I can't believe how satisfying it was. Our server, honestly I felt like he was my cousin bc he had such great vibes, he came to our table to check on us and I'm pretty sure my mouth was full each time which told him everything he needed to know. There was no left overs and the pita bread kept coming bc he saw I needed more for my hummus. The service was very attentive, I felt very well taken care of. Also while I was there, this woman was trying to decide if she should get the falafel and a guy at the table next to us told her that it was the best falafel he had ever had bc you can actually taste the herbs in it and it's NOT DRY at all!! This place overall had really great vibes and I loved feeling at home. There's a bunch of tables inside and they even have outdoor section. They have tv's playing all the relevant sports and OMG I forgot to take a picture of my BAKLAVA. lol First of all, my mamas baklava is the best baklava bc she makes it with love BUT they made such a good baklava and put it on top of vanilla ice cream... I know it's not traditional but it's just so much better with ice cream. And whatever honey they used to make the baklava with really makes it stand out. So basically what I'm saying is that YOU MUST TRY THE BAKLAVA. MUST!!! I'm very impressed with this place and look forward to taking my family here. If I could give this place more than 5 stars I would!! On a recent visit to Belmont, I had shortlisted this restaurant as a place to try. We arrived into town rather late and called ahead to make a reservation but were not sure we would make it in time. The host was so kind and gracious, he asked us to just come along and not worry about cutting it close to the closing time. We tried the popular falafels, souvlaki (w/lamb), hummus with shawarma (as an entree), build your own plate (w/ lamb& beef shawarma, hummus, baba ghanoush, tabbouli), shrimp entree and lamb chops entree. Fantastic food- amazing flavor and absolutely fresh! We put all of our order in right away as the kitchen was preparing to shut down, but one of my littles were super hungry and asked for a second portion after tasting the delicious food. When we asked if they could squeeze in another order, they went above and beyond to refire the grill and prepare the order. We have rarely received such a sense of warm homely welcome and amazing service. I so wish I lived closer to keep frequenting this amazing establishment. read more

I hope I didn't just come on a bad day because the reviews of this place are great. Service-wise, this place is stellar. The staff had good energy. I ordered a chicken shawarma wrap with some fries because I was told they were amazing. The chicken was on the drier side. I was able to hide that by putting more white sauce on top but I'm really not trying to douse my wrap in extra sauce. I had high expectations for the fries but I wasn't amazed. I'll say they're on the thicker cut side which already aren't my favorite, but I really think they needed more seasoning. read more

We will second the high ratings for the baba ganoush -- my Lebanese friend said that it was some of the best she has had. Street parking right out front was easy Lamb and beef shawarma plate with baba ganoush $23.45 - the 2 meats were thin strips, dry and undistinguishable from one another. Rice had no flavor. Baba was decent, but I've had way better. Pita bread was just average, nothing special. Overall no good Hummus add-on for $1.50 - very thin consistency. Almost felt like it was watered down. Light flavor. Very disappointing because I love hummus and I feel like you can't mess it up. Not good Lamb skewer add-on for $6 - meat was cooked perfectly. Each piece was tender yet chewy at the same time. Meat must be poor quality. Not good Baklava $3.66 - flavor was ok, not too sweet, but very moist to the point that it felt soggy. Shawarma was amazing. They actually make their own sauces. The staff are Very hospitable and tends to your request. seating a little tight and the line can get a little lengthy. Only one cash register so be prepared to wait for a bit. I waited about 25 minutes before I got my food and it was kind of busy. I did sit down and enjoyed my chicken Shawarma and then I felt like I really liked it so I wanted to try the beef lamb Shawarma so I got one for later and that was great. It's an unexpected setting for a restaurant that turns out Turkish/Mediterranean dishes, including a couple of enticing rotating specials! After we sat down, the waiter showed us a picture of the Lamb Shank special of the day, and it looked too good to pass up! The shank was covered with a chunky tomato sauce containing peas and carrots and was served alongside turmeric rice and a whole stem of fragrant rosemary as a garnish! The shank was flavorful and tender but not too tender, such that it still had a nice bite to it! Nice! In addition, we got a platter with chicken shawarma (which was nothing but marinated and grilled chunks of chicken breast), Greek salad (mostly romaine topped with red onion, tomato, feta, olives), tzatziki (with huge cucumber chunks), and a small dollop of hummus (a bit watery). All of this was served with thin pita bread and two different bottled sauces: a hot sauce and a tahini sauce! While decent, this was definitely not the best Mediterranean fare I've had in the area. While I wouldn't be in a rush to come back, the prices were fair, the service was friendly, and the modern setting with large windows looking out on the street was just so cozy! read more
