I ordered the köfte salad with added chicken, and I don't think I've ever had a better takeout experience. Niche menu, and everything on it is done well. I find it a tad bit pricey for what it is and the fast-casual model, but you do get high-quality ingredients. Super good, quick Mediterranean spot in Russian Hill. I got the Kobte wrap which was decently sized and very good at a decent price point ($14). It came with two dipping sauce (one I think was tzatziki and the other was a red sauce with a bit of spice to it). Split the hummus with pita with my friend- only complaint here was there was too little pita for the amount of hummus provided (not a big deal, we just saved the hummus for another day). 10% off first time orders via their site was a nice bonus, and I'll be more than willing to pay full price next time I come back. read more

Wow, astoundingly delicious food. Locally-sourced ingredients! Organically-raised chicken! Huge servings. Unless you're used to super-sizing your meals, each entree will mean you'll have leftovers. I discovered Sumac through North Beach Delivers, last night. We ordered fixed-price meals, an entree plus an extra side dish, plus a soup. Every dish came with soft warm pita, so we wound up with way more food than we could eat, and lots of pita. The velvety, flavorful lentil soup with caramelized onions was one of my favorites. The meatballs too deserve to be savored slowly, in a nest of fragrant steamed rice with a chickpea serving on one side. I rarely find a restaurant that is workable for me, that uses locally sourced and organic ingredients. Even during a pandemic Sumac offers pick-up and works with Uber Eats for deliveries. How lucky I feel to have found this restaurant. I will order again, to picnic on healthful, delicious Turkish street food from my picnic basket while watching the sunset from my apartment balcony. I ordered pickup from here shortly after they opened up. My partner got the lentil balls, and I got the chicken bowl. We also shared the hummus and baba ganoush. I was not impressed with the chicken. The pieces were somewhat dry and not flavorful. The veggies were very basic, and left me thinking that I've easily made better food for myself. The hummus was very acidic, and tasted and looked quite similar to Sabra hummus. The baba ganoush was very smoky. I ordered it on a whim because I was starving and not thinking logically. My partner and I both didn't enjoy it, but I'm not counting that against Sumac. My partner loved the Red Lentil Balls Rice Bowl. She kept going on about how great it was, and didn't share. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing, because I personally have no desire to go back. Finally, they didn't give any Sumac packets. Seems like a strange oversight!! read more

"California-Inspired Istanbul Street Food" So far so good. Just opened this week. I stopped by, on my way home, and ordered some Tabouli. Golly! I can't remember if I've had Tabouli like this before! It makes previous Tabouli's all seem the same, as if they were from Tabouli Inc. Fresh greens here take the front seat. Pomegegranate seeds, a nice touch! All-in-all: five stars. I also took home the Sumac Labneh and Fresh Herb Labneh sauces. Both stellar. I can't wait to make some dishes to go with them. The next day, I tried the babaganoush: excellent, and the addition of red bell peppers a splendid touch. This is the kind of place to enjoy coming back to again and again, having something new on the menu, until finding what's most favorite of all. I also liked the music - which can be a critical factor for me. Plus the array of books for browsing includes some fascinating Turkish sources. There are also some colorful visual touches from when Joseph Omran (Le Beau Grocery - also Five Star) converted the space, formerly a small corner grocery, into lively diner/caffé. I was on a San Francisco trip with my girlfriend riding the bus from place to place and we got off on a random corner SO HUNGRY and saw this place and were like okay whatever let's just eat here and man on man did we find a happy accident with this place. I got the Meatball bowl and it was simply delicious. The bowl was popping with flavors, the sauce was delicious, the meatballs got better with every bite. I will never talk mad sumac about this place because the food is fresh and tasty. The staff are friendly and happy. The vent on the hood for the stove is non existent and there is no wine list. I got the red bean wrap. I felt great after eating it. The dipping sauces where incredibly good. I even ordered a second sauce for $.75 cents. It was that good. I raise my glass (filled not with wine) to the wonderful staff that took care of us and to the cooks and also, to my friend, Joe who suggested this place to plan our bachelor party for the 18th of this month January 2020. I got the half and half bowl but next time I'd probably just stick to rice because it was a little hard to mix the big leaves with the rice and the sauces. Sumac reminded me what a wonderful place we live in. As they post in their menu "California Inspired" their choice of freshly sourced and organic chicken choices are fantastic. Medley of grilled or sautéed vegetables carefully wrapped with protein. It brought me images of Mediterranean landscape. It made me think of origins of food, where they grow them, or what kind of people eat these. Great food not only fills the stomach but also thoughts and senses, and this place did both. You can tell how much the chef cares about the meal from their presentation. With side pickled fibers to intricate condiments that keeps you dipping the wrap into... I highly recommend this place. The ambience is more designed for take out but because the food was absolutely delicious and the crew were so kind, the sit in dinner with my wife became romantic. Live in the area and tried Sumac on a whim last night, and I'm already looking forward to going back today. I ordered the kofte meatball wrap and it's probably the best take out I've gotten in San Francisco after living here for 5 years which I know is a bold statement. The meatballs have a mixture of different ground meats with incredible flavors, and fat content that's well thinned out by the yogurt sauce, lettuce, and chickpeas. It comes with a side of hot chili sauce and what seemed like a yogurt based sauce which add even more to the wrap. These are most definitely homemade and they are generous with the portions. Saved mine in the fridge to use for later. I was also able to try the banana pudding with fresh bananas. Don't leave without getting this. Seriously. I ordered take out, and enjoyed watching the chefs in the open kitchen prepare my food. Everything I ordered was made fresh which made any additional wait worth while. It honestly seems like these guys were chefs at really good restaurants, and decided to open up a no frills, not your typical take-out spot that will end up being one of the best in the area. I was really excited to try this place as there's nothing really like it in the neighborhood. We walked to the top of Russian Hill and could hardly tell it was the right place since there wasn't really any signage outside. When we got in, it looks like things were just getting set up as the menus were just on paper at this point. When it came to the food, I ordered the Hummus and the Chicken Rice Bowl. The ingredients were extremely fresh and quality was great. The food itself is also super healthy and the price point is super reasonable. The only reason I give this a 4 is that the eating area is relatively small and it seems like they're still working out the initial setup (with the signs and menus). I've had a number of things on the menu here and have enjoyed every item. The rice bowls are well portioned and enough to stretch into two meals; my favorite is the kofte (lamb and beef meatballs). A brand new place in an established community. Great location within walking distance to San Francisco landmarks like Lombard street and Ghirardelli Square (if you feel like an after meal stroll). Quaint homey feel when you walk in. There is a limited menu but it was DELICIOUS! I got the (vegetarian) red lentil wrap and it was surprisingly satisfying, the Turkish flavors were crisp and refreshingly unique my favorite parts were the fried onions and the red sauce-which looked like salsa and was spicy-- but definitely exotic and memorable. I tried Sumac when it was still in its "soft opening" period, but I can already tell that it's going to be my new "too tired to cook, but still want something healthy & delicious" go-to option! Got carry-out last night for two. The owner (who seems super nice and eager to make his customers happy!) suggested the lamb meatball bowl and chicken bowl for our first time. Neither disappointed. The meatballs were some of the best I've had: delicate, juicy, flavorful. The chicken was equally tender and flavorful - they have really nailed the flavor profiles for those two proteins! All of the complimentary ingredients in the bowls played amazingly well with the chicken and meatballs. For dessert, the owner even threw in complimentary banana puddings to put the perfect finish on a perfect Netflix and chill night-in. I ordered the chicken wraps with hummus and hot pita on the side. The chicken wrap was phenomenal with an explosion of flavor and the side hummus was a very generous account. To top it all off I ordered the banana pudding and this is a MUST. I will be going back there for many reasons but the first reason is for the banana pudding, it absolutely turned my day around.
