Decided to grab dinner here since the next main city won't be for a while. Rhianon is waiting on us. She's pleasant. Ordered two bento boxes, one chili lime and one teriyaki chicken, I added a salad on top of the miso soup, vegetables and a California rolls for our two bento boxes. $43.96. The miso tastes different here for some odd reason. There's a lot of tofu and seaweed. The broth tastes a bit odd is all. The seaweed is also mushy and soft and is maybe overcooked. The broth is okay even though it tastes a bit odd The fried rice is not good, it falls apart and doesn't stick at all, it's dry like the boxed rices. Not worth the $2.50 extra upgrade. The teriyaki chicken is okay, salty, but more flavorful than the chili lime chicken. The chicken is not too dry and is moist at least. The California roll was loose and fell apart with each roll I picked up to dip into sriracha. The mixed green salad was so-so. Not sure it was worth the $4.50 upgrade. The veggies are okay. Food was all subpar. They charged us $0.50 for each side of sriracha. The only plus of eating here is that you won't want to eat all of your food, since it's bit very good. Regretting coming here and not going to the other place my husband thought might be good, Shabushi, it was a 5 star too. Oh well, you live and learn. read more

Came in to try out while visiting Pocatello. Came at opening time, they unlocked the door for us. Server was nice, brought us each a beer and waited patiently nearby for our order (no one else was there). We ordered a vegetable tempura which was excellent. It went downhill from there - we ordered a sushi sampler, and it was eventually delivered (again, no one was there). We enjoyed the beer while finishing the tempura, so no real problem there. The items were small, and it is always a bad sign when every piece had significant scoring (to make sure it is not tough). We both expected it to taste old, and indeed it did. Not bad, mind you, we've had much worse. Still, it seemed obvious to us that this was the old stuff given to the first customers to get rid of it before moving to the fresher items. We had planned to order more, as half a tempura and half a sushi sampler was only planned for our starter, as we had decided to conduct a family meeting there. Instead, we knew that the food wouldn't get better as we were getting, basically, leftovers. We instead left, hoping to find better. Not really cool. Once the chef realizes they need to do the scoring to make it even acceptable, it is time to move on from it. Would have absolutely been tossed in most restaurants. read more

Good restaurant should smell accordingly. You are greeted with nauseating smell of chlorine. Not appetizing by any means. If you order water it comes not filtered. Some odd kids begging from table to table trying to sell some posters for like $30. Won't take simple "no, thanks" for an answer. Waiting was like 40+ minutes so definitely not for a quick meal. Bathrooms are just horrible. My wife and I did a little vacation and walked down from our hotel to this yummy restaurant. We had eaten here a year back and knew it was good. My wife is not a big sushi person so she ordered a dento box with teriyaki chicken and cooked vegetables. They cooked the vegetables perfectly and the food was great. This is THE BEST sushi my husband and I have had in the Pocatello area! We've tried all of the other sushi restaurants and the quality here is unbeatable! We came here for the first time for our anniversary and we're SO GLAD we did! We ordered the dozo Domo off menu roll option TWICE! We just loved everything they were putting out. We told the server what we like and her recommendations were AMAZING. I wouldn't trust a restaurant to make recommendations for different rolls or custom rolls more than I do here! I've been coming here for years and have always been content with food and service. Tonight (6-30-19) that changed - in a big way. The waitress was very good. The family pretty much ordered bento boxes. Everyone got chicken, except me, I ordered the steak bento box. Family was happy with their meals, I was too...until I tried the steak. It's color was off but I went ahead. Immediately I knew that this was an older and reheated piece of meat. Couldn't eat it, also concerning in a sushi place - yikes, kind of scary to me. Couldn't help but wonder about the freshness of their other proteins. Waitress took it back and offered to get a new order. I couldn't at that point. She said the chef tasted it and it was just "overcooked" and that's why it tasted off. Yes, overcooked, but I also know what an older piece of reheated meat tastes like. I know why the tried to mask it. Kind of offensive but I get why they wouldn't admit it. Hoping it was a unique experience but again, concerning in a sushi restaurant. They brought the check, no apologies, no reduction in the bill, I couldn't eat my meal...However, they gave a 10% off coupon for my next visit. Kind of amusing. The mushrooms seemed dehydrated and certainly had no good texture or taste. I didnt finish it. We also used to enjoy the chicken lettuce wraps. Came on a Friday night and I get that they're understaffed and it was busy for this small town. I appreciated our server for apologizing for the wait. The staffs here are nice and attentive. I had their Emperor Roll, salmon and yellowtail nigiri. If it weren't for the jalapenos in the Emperor roll, I think I would have tasted the fish better haha. Beware! The sushi portions are small, so if you've got a big party, order multiple rolls to get what you pay for. The portion I had was just enough for me. It takes a lot of hard work to achieve 5-stars...and this place is doing it. Nice and comfortable interior, but no music in the dining area...only some 50's rock and roll flowing from the bar. Great service...it is nice to have someone ask how you dinner is...and keeps your glass filled. This is customer service 101...and he deserves a nice tip...!!! So, the food was real good...I had the tempura shrimp roll (excellent), spicy tuna roll (pretty good!!), and the well rated "Godzilla Roll"...that turned out to be something different than what my mind thought it would be...bur it was great. The only down part is that I couldn't open my mouth wide enough to put my food in...and my wife (and friends too) will say that I have a fairly big mouth...LOL. Let me see if I have this straight, I have to move 2000 miles away before Pocatello gets a sushi restaurant? I'm not exaggerating (I google-mapped it)--and on top of that, it's a GOOD sushi restaurant? I lived here 28 years with no sushi and the second I move, in comes Sumisu. That's some cold shit. (Ok, that's the end of my rant.) Here's the review: This place is awesome. I got the Godzilla roll--crab, spicy tuna, avocado, cucumber, asparagus, topped with seared tuna, and a soy and wasabi aioli. All the ingredients were fresh, the tuna was great, and the aioli was absolutely amazing (they should bottle it). Let me talk about size. It didn't even occur to me that "Godzilla" would be referring to the size of the roll. It was the biggest sushi roll I've ever seen in my life. Seriously, it may have been a foot long and over two inches wide. I couldn't even finish half of it, I had to get a box! My husband got the Tonkatsu bento box which came with soup, salad, tempura vegetables, rice, and a California roll. All of that for $7, which is pretty amazing. My only negative comment would be on the edamame we had for an appetizer. It was very oily...a bit too much butter for me, although my husband loved it. Yummy Japanese food at a very reasonable price, how can you beat that? note: they don't have alcohol and I didn't ask if they were OK with byob, I'll update next time I go in and have a chance to ask. read more

First.... Really cute decor. Second... CLEAN. Third... Great service! Our waitress was friendly, bubbly and attentive. And even more importantly.... THE FOOD!!!! Two coworkers and I ordered an app each and two rolls each... And our eyes outdid our bellies at least two times over. The edamame were based in this...buttery-garlicky bit of happiness that had us all moaning like idiots. We embarrassed ourselves. We also had the Crab Rangoon and tempura veg... Also good, but the edamame was unexpected entirely in its unique flavor. One coworker is now a convert. The rolls....Godzilla, Tiny Dancer, Yellowstone, Sumisu, Ghost Roll and Fire Dragon (this closet pyro couldn't resist a roll served on a bonafide bed of fire)... Each one as good as it gets. Sumisu was a lucky find for us in Pocatello, ID. Never thought we would find sushi in this quiet place, but there it was. Seems their two year anniversary will be on December 06, 2012. Simple design inside, a lot bigger than it looked from outside. If you want sushi, sit at the bar, it is well worth it. Both chefs working the bar that day were a pleasure to talk with as they kept us entertained and our plates full. We tried at least 8 different rolls, including the following: Ghost roll - Ghost pepper Aioli made in house is no where near as hot as i feared, and had a nice smoky flavor to go along with this roll. A good one to try. Salmon River roll - Creamier than I expected, but still a good blend of flavors. The slice of chili pepper on top gave it a nice kick Godzilla roll - Their version came out nice. Easy to find a version of this roll in restaurants and this didn't disappoint. Emperor roll - Light and refreshing, very nice late in the meal. All of the food out of the kitchen also looked good, but there was no room left to try any. The bento boxes were a good deal and looked great for lunch. The miso salmon also went by... so tempting. If I ever have business in the area again, I will have to stop by and check up on this wonderful little restaurant. I've gotten takeout here a few times over the last couple of years I've lived in Pocatello and it's always been pretty good. I finally got around to dining in a few weeks ago when I had family in town with some pretty demanding dietary restrictions and I thought sushi might be a good bet. I'm sorry I haven't dined in sooner. This place has way more ambiance than most places in Pocatello and wouldn't be out of place in a much larger city. What really impressed me was how accommodating they were of my family's dietary restrictions. We were not an easy table--no gluten, no dairy, no soy, no legumes, and my niece has a bad peanut allergy. Eating out is stressful for them (obviously) so it was really nice that the server was committed to helping everyone find something they could eat and the kitchen was happy to make menu alterations. My sister-in-law had a roll custom made for her by the chef to suit her dietary needs. It looked really good and she was happy with it. They also changed the way they made the shrimp in the bento box so my niece could eat it. I got a salmon bento box and it was all good as usual except for the fried rice, which was surprisingly bad considering the quality of the rest of the food. No big deal though, I'll just remember to get steamed rice instead next time. Thanks for making my family a great lunch and for being so pleasant about accommodating their dietary needs! read more

Sat at the bar, Justin and Daniel were awesome and so nice and interactive, they made some delicious sushi and was really nice chatting with them and watching their skill. Their nigiri and sashimi were outstanding, quality and freshness of their fish is apparent. Once I saw that dark purple ahi I knew it was going to be good. Their hamachi was amazing as well. Not a knock on Boise but haven't found any quality fish in Idaho until coming to Pocatello. Fled from a state that we wont mention, but good sushi was everywhere there so very very thankful to have found Sumisu in Idaho. Service was extremely slow and the waiter avoided us until the food came out. It took over 30 minutes to get our rolls ( 2 specialty and 2 maki rolls). There were 4 sushi chefs and 4 tables filled. I watched them pack 2 to-go orders before they even got to the sit-down orders! Head sushi chef also yelled for our waiter down the hall to tell her to turn off the TV volume because it was "annoying." We ordered the ghost roll, emperor roll, and spicy tuna/salmon. The ghost roll tasted the best and was spicy! The emperor roll was dry as the filling with just cucumber with avocado and was missing sprouts.
