Wow. I would have never thought I would find great sushi in Pocatello, ID, but I have. The Lea was delish. The lobster bisque was fantastic. My husband thought it just might be one of the best he's ever had. I had the teriyaki chicken bento box and was very pleased. The spicy tuna was great. Was actually really excited to try this place, but were just disappointed. the bento boxes were sad. The veggie tempura was falling apart with little flavor other than pure salt. The dipping juice was also pure salt. The chicken teriyaki and fried rice was pure salt as well. Don't get me wrong, salt can be great, but when there is so much that you leave feeling sick to your stomach? That's a problem. And no other flavor! My husband had the same experience. I only felt comfortable giving our baby plain white rice because of how bad the sodium amount was. The rolls were okay. We overheard someone at another table say it was better than Fuji hands down. As people who have been to Fuji many times, my husband and I just looked at each other and laughed due to how wrong this person was. I lived in a lot of places and had lots of sushi. Sumisu's sushi is good most of the time (occasionally the fish can be of varied quality, though it's generally good). I find their simple, regular rolls best and actually a good deal given their quality. Their fancy creations are good, but a bit on the pricy side. Their tempura is actually quite good. The other dishes can leave something to be desired, and their edamame is cooked in butter...??? Perhaps some people like this style of edamame, not me. Overall, if you stick to the rolls you will not be disappointing. I'm glad Sumisu exists in Pocatello! read more

I would like to start off by saying that the food was good but small. I usually get one sushi and feel fairly full but left still feeling hungry. Our waitress took our order and didn't come back to check on us for 30 MINUTES! I caught her as she was walking by to tell her we were kind of in a rush and came back minutes later with our food. We didn't order anything besides the sushi which should not have taken longer than 15 minutes max. I have previously had lovely experiences in Sumisu, though the last few times has been a disappointment. For one, the front of house always smells vaguely like sewer, which is unappetizing. However, the food is good, so it is a forgiveable flaw. The staff is helpful at giving recommendations, as well. However, the quality of the sushi has recently taken a downturn. Most notably, the spicy tuna roll was rubbery and had little flavor, and many of the other rolls (Portneuf and Dragon come to mind) lack dimension and significant flavor. I hope that that was just an off night, as we went on a busy Saturday, but it was still a surprisingly disappointing dinner from the previous times we have been there. read more

The food there is fantastic, and it's my favorite place to get sushi in town. However, the reason it's not five stars is because almost every time I go there they forget something with my order. Maybe worth 3 stars. The employee on the phone was super nice so a good 4 stars and they didn't charge me for eel sauce so still doing good. So Okay food, good service, eh building. This is one of my favorite places in Pocatello. You get a good amount of food (especially for lunch if you get the bento box). They have several options. I love the appetizers. The spring rolls are delicious! As is the tempura. The salads tend to be over dressed, but the dressing is light and good, so I don't mind. The three veggie options in the bento are all good. The house soup is a bit disappointing but still good if you are looking for a light option. The bisque is good, but very rich. I really like the Tiny Dance Roll and the Pure Bliss Roll--but all I have tried are pretty good. The Eugene Roll is weird for me with the lime. My one complaint is the way they call their food from the kitchen (I have only noticed this once, but it was annoying). They don't have a system to let the waitstaff know their food is up besides their voices...so it get load and annoying if they are putting out a lot of food (specifically if you are in seated by the kitchen). It is nice to see something like this surviving in Pocatello. Since Senang is gone (don't waist your time at the Brick) this is where I would take a first date in town. read more

This place has a decent Bento Box. Very over priced for the amount of food you get. It is more of a special occasion place to meet or for the person who doesn't care about price. I left really hungry after spending $15 on lunch. The atmosphere is one of the better ones for Pocatello but that's not saying much. If you're not that hungry then I say go for it. Went here on a whim for lunch. It was really good! The bento box lunch was a really good deal and even though it looked like a small amount of food I wasn't even able to finish it. The tempura pork was good, the sauce they put on it was fantastic! The green beans dipped in soy sauce were really good too as was the California roll. I'm looking forward to coming back to try more sushi. Cool find and now definitely somewhere I'm going to make a regular stop when I visit! Update: Went again for lunch and had the Chief Pocatello roll. Holy cow it's awesome and even waaaay better than the California roll. Also had the raw octopus which was surprisingly mild and meaty. I have eaten here a few times and I LOVE the food. The Teppanyaki reminds me of the food I at in the Japan pavilion in EPCOT. The Bento Box lunches at fun and very good. lots of amazing flavors! The edamame is amazing and my favorite roll is a tie between Sawtooth and Tiny Dancer roll. The only reason I give this place a 3 is the service. There is nothing more annoying to me than walking into a place and being ignored. The last time I was in the waiter never refilled our drinks and I watched our food sit on the counter, while he had a smoke break. Our food all arrived at the same time, sushi roll, starter, and meal, which meant we did not get the soup that was supposed to come with the meal. The first time I came here the service was great, but the longer its been open the worse the service has become. Well, my next visit was just a few nights ago. Thankfully, it was better than my first time! The rice was was better; but still, "off". I don't think it was very authentic. I've had a lot of good sushi in my life to compare Sumisu's to. Our service was also much better than my first experience. I ordered three rolls, and liked two of them. The tiny dancer roll (which I got last time) was chalky tasting. I'm pretty sure it was the shrimp tempura inside. I may go back another time, but I will probably avoid anything with tempura in it. For the quality I still think this place is overpriced. I had trouble deciding between two or three stars for this review but decided on three out of five since two of my rolls were pretty good tasting. The authenticity was lacking a bit though due to the rice. Sumisu, fix your rice please! I was happy to see some Grand Teton local beers in bottles available too!
