This is a small seafood market but has a good selection of fresh seafood…read more My mom lives in the area and comes here often to buy fresh seafood. She and I have bought brim, oysters, crab and shrimp. On our most recent trip it was local shrimp to make a gumbo. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, prices are decent and the selection good. There's always a line of people looking for the freshest selection at opening , which says a lot about the market. If I lived here, this would be my go-to seafood market.

You can always tell of a popular and high-quality seafood market by the smell when you walk in…read more Such as the case with H&J Seafood in Goose Creek. To be honest I wasn't hunting for fresh fish, rather I was making Jambalaya and I was craving Boudin to go with it. I called ahead to make sure they had some and the employee was very nice and while they offer many varieties, I wanted pork and rice. They took my name on Friday ensuring it would be available on Monday, which it was. Upon entering the none assuming establishment which I wasn't anticipating it in a strip mall, not that it's an issue as it's a safe area, but I was expecting a free standing establishment for some reason. The two people in there were very nice and quick to greet me. It took a minute for my eyes to lift up from the display case stuffed full of a plethora of seafood. To be honest I last lived in Charleston in 2000 and spent the rest of my life in Kansas City and Austin. Fresh seafood, especially from a dedicate monger was hard to find so it was a reestablishing my roots. H&J has not only the freshest seafood available this far inland, but plenty of cooking accessories including spices, sauces and accompaniments for all your needs. Back to the display case, blue shell crabs, oysters, clams, shrimp, scallops and more fish than I can label were all wonderfully presented as if it was a snapshot in time of the best they had to offer. If only my menu had planned for this, I would have indulged in breaking my wallet. Alas, I told the nice young lady I was the guy who called in the boudin, which she indicated to look behind me. In the free-standing fridges, I grabbed my prize while I pondered some of their other bounty. Focus...I had to maintain focus! To give a short review on the boudin, it sucked. This is a subjective point, one that I compare with many other versions I've gotten from Louisiana companies that specialize in Cajun Boudin. First there was some off-putting spice in it one that struck me odd. I texture was ok but I didn't like it. Again, I don't hold this against H&J b/c first it's a subjective matter and second it was packaged and shipped in. To wrap up, I've found my fish monger and I will be going back. I know writing a review of a seafood market while only purchasing a pork product seems disingenuous, I grew up in Charleston and was a chef, one can "smell out" frauds and this isn't a subpar place. The people are nice, the seafood fresh and the quality is the best you get unless you know someone with a boat. Drop on by if you need any sort of seafood products!

Stopping in to Earth Fare I was curious what the place had in store (sorry for the bad pun) to…read moresatisfy my curiosity. I will say there's plenty of parking outside with a very clean parking lot. There isn't too much inventory spilling out into the front of the store, which is oh so trendy, but it's tastefully done. Walking in the place is extremely clean, after some of the places I've been recently, this is very refreshing. I'll get this out of the way up front. I used to be a chef so when I see GMO, Gluten free, etc etc I cringe. There is hardly a definitive Government standard by which all these things are measured. Which means more often than not, it's a scam. If you want the real deal, farmers markets are the best bet. With that I observed the pricing like a hawk and comparable items had roughly a 10% markup. Now then I do love their house made foods. Cooking pizzas to order? Come on that's awesome! Desserts and cheeses are ok although I was a little down on their sliced meats and the variety. Their butcher was ho-hum and not very impressive. But... I spotted something I didn't anticipate Kangaroo, Ostrich and Bison to name a few oddities. I give credit for carrying very unpopular items around Summerville. FYI I've cooked ostrich before. It tastes just like beef only almost all lean meat for those watching your calories. I wondered around some more, noticing they had better cereal alternatives with less sugar. They lacked snacks like coconut crisps, but they did have a great assortment of dried fruits. Although I was impressed with their dried mushroom selection, no dried shiitakes! Generally, I like fresh, which they did have, but I wanted the juice from soaking them. Odd they have other mushrooms but not shiitake. The people here are fantastic. For some reason in my mind when I think of these "hippy" type of stores like Earth Fare I think very grounded and kind people. I wasn't disappointed as I asked the produce guy for something and he was all too eager to help out. If it were me, I would have been more like "check isle 3" or something. The employees are shining examples of down to earth kindness; something we all could use more of in these days. Overall, I like this place based on principal but those same principles are what keep me away. I'm not overly excited about slapping on GMO free labels when most of the time those are just buzz words to make an extra buck. Are there authentic companies out there? Sure but you really have to do your homework. Therefore, I remain committed to farmers markets. That said, I think this place is fine for those who like it. If you haven't been here before and are reading this be prepared for a slight price increase. To reiterate they do have an interesting variety of items greatly depending on specific products. I'm sure if you drop by you wont leave empty handed especially with the quality of people there to help.

A great place for fresh salads, exotic meat like bison and elk, and tons of sea food.read more
