We were just passing through on our way home from Christmas travels, but the whole family said that we wished we lived nearby so we could come back. Our 11-year-old is still devouring the fried chicken in the backseat. They had a great range of items, from the fried chicken to the open-faced roast beef sandwich I got to the omelet my husband had. They also had a reasonable list of choices for our super-picky 6- year-old. We didn't have room (or time) for pie, but they looked amazing. We heard several other tables raving about them, and they wee most definitely homemade. They had many options, including standard Apple, lemon meringue and coconut cream, as well as some more local favorites. Service was very friendly and helpful and the price was reasonable. We had three adult meals and a kids meal for under $40. Definitely a welcomed stop in a LONG drive from Illinois to Virginia. read more

What a sleepy little town! Our server wasn't the most attentive and there wasn't really anyone else in there that she was taking care of. The food was definitely the saving grace. They give great portions and everything tasted pretty fresh. I don't know that we would ever go back, maybe t we were in passing or something. read more

I was just passing through Somerset for the night and wanted some good late night eats, so after a Google search I stumbled upon this diner which was down the street from my hotel. It seemed like a late night haunt for the locals. I had the special of the night: Kielbasa and kraut with mashed potatoes and a root beer float. The meal was pretty good and the price wasn't bad at all, coming out to around $8.00. I was a little disappointed with the wait staff though, with mostly what looked like high school girls that were spread too thin. I waited a lot to ask for a glass of water and for my check, and I heard the head waitress talking to the girl that was my server that I've been waiting for the check (must have made it obvious because I had my coat on). Good old fashion diner. Hard to find these days. We're in from out of town visiting the Flight 93 Memorial. Excellent breakfast with wonderful friendly service. We liked it so much we had stop back by for some of their scratch made pie and coffee after our memorial site visit. read more

We recently stopped in for dinner on our way from Philly to Chicago. Boy, were we lucky!! This place is great. They have an in house butcher and I ordered the mushroom swiss burger which came with grilled onions and bacon. This was probably the best bacon I have ever eaten and the burger, although thin was absolutely delish! My husband had the hot roast beef sandwich with homemade mashed potatoes. And the pie. . . WOW. Homemade apple and lemon meringue. Very reasonable prices and good, friendly service. This is a real winner!!! read more

Our meal was delicious--classic diner fare (omelet and toast for me, burger and fries for my boyfriend). Our waitress was really terrific...friendly and attentive, even though we aren't locals and some of the other folks seemed to be. Food is good, but on more than one visit, server was mean to my children. This time she gave one of them a hard time about an electronic device that he saved his money to buy. I don't normally allow electronics at the table, but I made an exception, because he JUST got this himself, and he was proud. He was not being rude or non-social. We were in Somerset for the night and wanted a mom and pop kind of restaurant for breakfast. We stumbled upon the Summit Diner and I am so glad we did. I had scrambled eggs with cheese, potatoes that we cut fresh there, not your normal hash brown potatoes and the were excellent. I also had bacon and toast. My boyfriend had a ham and jalapeno omelette. The food came out and the portions were very large and the food was excellent. My husband and I travel between Maryland and Ohio several times a year, Somerset is a convenient stopping point. Summit dinner is a homey place to stop and eat. Service is great and atmosphere is casual. read more

Old school diner so has potential. No big stand outs on typical diner menu. Pies were just awful. Won't be returning which is a shame as we drive through this area in route to Pittsburgh and would love good place to stop. Unfortunately the Summit Diner is not the place to stop. read more

Not too familiar with this area, but found this restaurant/ diner to fit our need for a quick bite. I had the roast beef sandwich with gravy and fries. Portions were ample and good. Very reasonable prices. If you like diner food, may be give this place a try. The building is old and has the old counter and stools along with some booths. There looked to be an attached dining room, but the employees said that section wasn't open. The place could use some TLC. 4 stars for the food and service, but building is showing its age. read more

True to what it is, a roadside diner. In-the-box diner fare. Our breakfast items - scrambles and omelets - were made with fresh ingredients, not greasy. But we did make a new discovery - Scrapple, described by our server as, "fried pork product mixed with cornmeal" - of course we had to try it. Kind of looked like brown Spam. Apparently in PA you top it with syrup. It tasted exactly like I would expect something described as "product" to taste. Now we know we can live without it. Service was very friendly. read more

My husband and I were raised in Somerset County and came up to visit. We went to the Summit for breakfast they were very busy the front was full so we went to the other room. There was only one table available by the door to their kitchen. Every time someone went in or out cold air blew on me. When two tables came available I asked our waitress if we could move, she very rudely said no I have people waiting for them. As we waited for our food no one was seated in the one table but we couldn't move. I asked another waitress for the manager, she said I haven't seen her for a while. We finally decided to leave as I was so cold. The nasty waitress came and said your food is ready to come out, I said forget it we are leaving. Another waitress came and said we could move to the outer room which we decided to and stayed. I saw the manager and told her what happened. Our nasty waitress came complaining to the owner and was told to shut up. Our new waitress wasn't real friendly either until she brought the check then she smiled. My guess in order to get a tip. This was the worst service we have ever had there. read more

My daughter-in-law and I stopped in for lunch. As we walked into the diner, a couple was leaving so we asked if the food was good. They said it was great and to be sure to save room for the coconut cream pie. Our waitress, Emily, was exceptionally friendly and helpful. She is a gem! She recommended something from each page of the menu. The food was good and lots of it. And yes, I did have the coconut cream pie. Love the old diners and Summit was great. read more

I'm a sucker for railway car diners. Passing through on a Sunday 2pm-ish. Contrary to the info on google, they WERE open. My girl and I sat at the counter, and ordered breakfast. That done, I quickly went to the jukebox, sunk $2 in it, and our food arrived as I selected my 6th and final tune. Very busy when we got there, it quieted by the time we were done. I was then able to ask our server if she knew the person who had put so much loving care into the selections available on the CD jukebox. "Yeah, My Mother." I heard that same girl call another lady who'd been circulating either "Gran" or "Gram." I was very taken with the place, it was a welcomed oasis on a pretty taxing drive from Indiana to NYC. I see too many of these great old diners suffering from the neglect of owners, or worse yet, their communities. Glad to see The Summit bucking the trend - thank you so much! read more

Saw some of the previous reviews regarding dinner so had that meal across the street at the Pine Grill. This was our breakfast meal the morning after the night before. Ordered some eggs with sausage patties - sounds pretty mundane, so why the 5 stars you may ask. Simple, those sausage patties were the best I have ever had! Made fresh onsite, they give you two HUGE patties. Not some half-dollar sized puck from a tube of Jimmy Dean, but more like two 1/4-1/2 pounders. I would have gladly been happy with just one, but two made my day (and I am sure my cholesterol) go sky-high. Their particular seasoning blend was just divine. Can't say enough about it. If you are planning a trip to the 9/11 memorial or to Fallingwater and are staying in Somerset, this is the breakfast joint to eat at. read more

Service worse than Dicks at Myrtle Beach. If you want to be scolded, ignored and treated like crap, go here. Maybe that's your thing if so you'll love it. First you stand at the door like an idiot. Nobody says anything like whats your name or we'll have a seat soon. The attitude is shut up or leave. We'll get to you when we damn well feel like it. Then if you do get a table stand by it and wait until its cleaned or holy hell will rain down on you. Then after that wait one hour for your food. The food is very good but not worth the verbal hazing you have to endure to get it. I've been going there 40 years and I am done with it. read more

From the looks of the outside of this diner, I was hoping for something a little more remarkable. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a very standard run-of-the-mill diner. If that's what you're looking for, you won't be disappointed. We stopped by this place on our cross country road trip! I don't know how the 60s would have looked and felt like except for seeing in movies but I guess this place comes in pretty darn close. Warm friendly staff. Food cooked family style. They even have a menu which proudly says they opened up in 1960 July 11. Although the server was quick and friendly, the food was subpar again. The side salad was old (lettuce wilted and cucumber soggy) so I asked for a fresh salad. Imagine my surprise when the same salad came back sans the wilted lettuce. This was my 3rd and final time going to this establishment. read more

Waitress -Chloe - was Friendly, very attentive and double checked that our bacon was cooked as ordered. Food was traditional breakfast tasting but prices are great and quantity good. Great place! Good food and low prices. I had the turkey club with fries and a piece of gob cake. The sandwich was huge and delicious. The fries were good too. I had to pack the gob cake for later because the sandwich filled me up and the block of cake was large. If you don't know, gob cake is like a Hostess Suzy Q. I think it's a PA thing. Also, try the sausage, I got the breakfast special to go and took a piece of the sausage before I gave it to the kid. Service was great also. You could tell this was a place with a lot of regulars because the staff seemed to know everyone. If I'm in the area again I will surely be back. read more

Not bad- I have eaten here 2 times now in a matter of days. First night was a burger and shake- it was quite good! The Oreo shake was very smooth. The burger was cooked to medium- service was good! But will definitely be back again for another burger. I went for breakfast on AM- had the breakfast special and pancakes. Again it was good- the sausage was made in home- nice to see- and was very good- but also very greasy. Everything else on the plate- home fries, eggs, toast, and pancakes were all delicious.
