Honestly, I wasn't expecting this to be as good as it is. I had the hibachi chicken and shrimp, and right from the start, I could tell this wasn't going to be a gloppy, oversaturated mess with sauce from Sysco (Sysauce?). Instead, Sumo Grill cooked up some perfectly cooked chicken and shrimp that were topped off by a not-too-sweet sauce, complemented by perfectly steamed vegetables. It was all so good and filling that I went back again two days later, and the steak was also cooked exactly as it should be. Good service, too: friendly and welcoming and efficient. read more

Stopped by after a round at Franklin Canyon. Sumo is in a nice strip mall right off the highway with plenty of parking. Walked in and received a friendly greeting at the counter. Large varied menu with lots of hibachi style offerings. Saw a sign that said all the beef was wagyu. I ordered the beef and scallop combo with garlic fried rice and wife got Ty hibachi deluxe with beef, chicken and shrimp. Got a side of spicy edamame and the Gyoza. Edamame was really good... gyoza was a little cold inside so was cooked from frozen. Food came out after about ten minutes. It was piping hot and freshly made... scallops and meat cooked to order. My little family & I left the rankin pools so you know we had an appetite after some sun & swimming. I was looking for something yummy nearby & found this. When I was younger Beni Han Hans was only for special occasions & always with my grandparents before they passed so when I read hibachi I said say lessss... I kept reading it was way better than Han Han's too so of course I had to try it. Unfortunately, my bb girl fell asleep in the car so I can only review the takeout. The portion size is crazy, way bigger than I expected & I'm so glad it was cus it was hella good. I got the steak and shrimp combo with the fried rice. The steak was tender, both meats weren't overcooked and the veggies were cooked perfectly too. I did get a side of garlic butter & I'm glad I did. Smothered that on my rice lol. Honestly, I'd give it a 5/5 if only I could have it with the mustard sauce from benihanas. Regardless, this will be a regular spot I order from. We found this local hibachi spot on a day we didn't feel like cooking and decided to get takeout. I'm a big fan of hibachi - I've been to Benihana for my birthday more times than I care to admit! Sumo Grill is very no-frills compared to a place like that. There are no chefs at your table cooking or throwing shrimp tails into their hats, but the food itself is so much better and it's much more affordable for a casual night in! We ordered mixed tempura, a steak and shrimp combo, a chicken and salmon combo, and garlic fried rice substituted for plain rice for both. The meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The garlic fried rice was SO GOOD, don't pass it up! And the tempura was so fresh and crispy. The portion sizes were pretty generous too - we didn't think we'd have leftovers but we did the next day. The family working at the store were so friendly and got our food out in 15ish minutes piping hot. We love supporting local Asian owned businesses, so we'll be back here whenever we're feeling like hibachi! read more

Located right off the freeway with plenty of parking. Came in on a Tuesday night and was able to order right away. Greeted as soon as we entered. There were ~6-8 tables. Dining area was clean, bright and spaced out well. Shrimp tempura - fresh, hot and really crispy. Not too salty, slightly sweet tempura batter 10/10 Steak, shrimp, and chicken hibachi with garlic rice - steak was rare (what we ordered) and was juicy. Chicken was not dry. Shrimp had a good "snap" to it. Veggies weren't overcooked, wish they had mushrooms but the zucchini, broccoli, carrot mix was still good. Garlic rice was not too salty and had great garlic flavor. 10/10 Miso soup - very hot, had tofu bits, seaweed and scallions. Not too salty and was very balanced - 10/10 Overall, for a "fast food" type hibachi the food was excellent. Still a little expensive but a fraction of the cost for a Benihana with the food being even better quality and great portion. Would definitely recommend. read more

My favorite is Hibachi Steak and Shrimp with Garlic Fried Rice and their fresh vegetable mix in a light sauce. I also have had the Hibachi Steak, Chicken and Shrimp Trio with the same sides and it was delicious! My new favorite addition to my meal is a 3 piece order of Japanese Spring Rolls (I can't spell the actual name) with a delicious dipping sauce. I had read about this place on Ubereats. Vallejo is somewhat of a food wasteland these days, so I've turned to an occasional splurge. It was SO stinkin' hot on Saturday that I COULD. NOT. COOK. I think I took two showers, maybe three that day. I decided to splurge ( 57 bucks for rice, salmon/shrimp/veg combo, and sesame balls.) for dinner. I am SO glad I did, because all the food was fresh, clean tasting and delicious. I could only eat half of it (reheating tonight!) and would 100% go back, although I will just hit it on the way home from BART instead of going the UBER eats route. Pretty sure this would not have cost as much. BUT it was indeed really good 'fast food' and I hope to high heaven they open another spot. COME to Vallejo! WE NEED good healthy spots! Sumo Grill is my new fav!! They are run by the same family who runs Fuji Grill in Brentwood. Martinez is a lot closer than going all the way to Brentwood so I knew I had to give this place a try. They are located in a small shopping center right off of Highway 4. The interior is small but I expected that it would be, they have a few tables for dining inside but not many. The owner/manager was very nice and welcoming, I immediately sparked up a conversation about Sumo Grill and Fuji Grill. The menu is no frills and has quite a bit to offer. They have a nice variety of appetizers, meat/poultry/seafood hibachi plates, pork/chicken katsu, kid's meals, fried rice and yaki udon. They also have vegetarian options as well. I ordered the Hibachi Steak and upgraded to Garlic Fried Rice instead of steamed rice then I ordered a side of garlic butter. I love that the food is cooked to order and you know that you're getting fresh food. The steak was cooked medium-well and it was cooked to perfection. It was very tender and flavorful, the vegetable were cooked to perfection and I really love the sauce that they cook the dish in, the flavor was on point. The garlic fried rice was amazing and had a great garlicky flavor and also had some egg in it. I think the garlic fried rice would be even more amazing if it had some veggies in it as well. The meal came with two sauces: yummy sauce and ginger sauce. The ginger sauce is quite good and not too overpowering, I actually add that to my rice. The yummy sauce is different and a little sweet and it pairs very well with the steak, along with their delicious garlic butter. The portion size is great as well, I made two meals out of this one meal. Lots of steak and veggies. Rice filled to the top, they definitely give you your money's worth. Overall the food was delicious, the customer service was great, portions are great, they are a bit pricey but totally worth it. I highly recommend trying them out as affordable and casual hibachi spots are hard to come by. I will be back!! read more

Happened to be driving by, saw the signage and remembered the name from a FB group post. So impressed with the hibachi! I'm no hibachi expert and it's not something I find myself ever craving so was so pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the steak & scallop plate. Meat was tender and flavorful. There was also a bed of veggies underneath the meat. I admit I'm not a fan of veggies in general so when I saw that, I was like, eh. But I ate them anyway, because I'm an adult, and I ended up loving them! Cooked to the perfect texture, covered in the delicious sauce, I could've eaten a bowl of just that. The fried rice upgrade was yummy as well. Also had the tempura, fried calamari, and chicken skewers. The appetizers were ok but the hibachi is what really shined for me. I think this place is small family owned because there was a boy manning one of the registers. Reminded me of my childhood helping out in my parents' restaurant. Definitely a business I want to support. Note: if you order online, there's a $1 surcharge for each dish, which is expected to cover the fees, so calling in your order will save you a few bucks. They also have lobster hibachi for a limited time but it's not listed as an option online. Just a sign posted in their store. read more

My husband and I LOVE the steak and shrimp combo. We get one to share with garlic fried rice with a gyoza appetizer and that feeds both of us. We get an extra side of ginger sauce that I happily pay for because it's so good I could drink it! They have single serving crepe cakes in their fridge that are really good, though not house made like almost everything else there. Every time we've ordered, our steak has been cooked to perfection, the shrimp is delicious and the veggies are cooked well. The seasoning is excellent, never too salty. The staff is always very friendly, and though the restaurant is small, it's clean and well lit. I'm continually impressed by everything we've had here.
