Of all the sushi places I've tried the past couple of years, this was my favorite. Was. I decided to treat myself after a radiology appointment since I was in the area. All I could think of was the excellent beef sun pod I had before. They don't have it anymore, at least, not at lunch time. The entire menu has been redone. You can only get bowls, rolls, or wraps now in terms of sushi offerings, as well as a selection of Thai and Burmese dishes. It's BYO for bowls, rolls, or wraps. I didn't try a bowl or wrap, but a baseline roll (with up to three fruits/veggies) is $5.99. After that, you have to pay to add other ingredients. I stuck with avocado and added cream cheese for $.50 and fresh salmon for $2.50. Basically, it cost me $9 for a Philly roll that's $5-6 anywhere else. The roll seemed a little larger, but considering most sushi places have lunch specials where you can get two rolls for a little less or three rolls for a little more AND soup, it didn't seem like a great value. The plum wine was a generous pour for under $5. Service was good. I prefer black rice, but that's no enough reason for me to come back again. read more

I'll start with the best (which was mediocre at best) and that would be the sushi. It didn't have much flavor, but it looked pretty. Next is the chicken curry & paratha. Now I'm not sure how curry became part of Thai culture, but my standards are pretty high for traditional chicken curries. They failed miserably. It was definitely attempting to be a traditional Indian chicken curry, but lacked so much flavor and spice. The paratha looked like what you would expect, but it was too chewy and not crispy as it should be other than the outer crust. Finally, the pad see u. My favorite Thai restaurant to go to when I come back to Buffalo to visit family. I'm pretty basic and always get the beef pad Thai. But it's such a classic dish and it's so delicious. Their Thai iced tea is phenomenal, perfect sweetness without being too rich. Also a huge fan of their black rice sushi. So, obviously in times of COVID 19 we have to be extra careful where we are ordering from at the protocol. I have to say that Sun is doing a great job of this! For my birthday we ordered Kat Kyay Kit and jt was amazing as usual. The only gripe I have is that I didn't feel my dish had enough tofu! I wanted more pieces but the noodles themselves were tasty! We also ordered the steamed chicken dumplings, calamari (which was pretty good despite being tame out). My favorite part was definitely the black sticky rice pudding with sweet potato! It is delightful and I will go back to order take out just for dessert (I have done this many times and you don't really need to call ahead much and can call on impulse because it takes 2 mins to get ready) It's definitely a go-to! The access we have to Burmese food in Buffalo is a treasure. I don't live in town anymore but come back to visit whenever I can, and this is a spot I come to for food I can't get many other places. I am so grateful for the delicious contributions our Burmese neighbors have made to Buffalo's food culture, and am glad that this second location is expanding the reach of Sun Cuisines! Takeout from Sun Cuisines was my meal of choice to celebrate a big educational milestone with my family. We got the flat wide noodles/kat kyay kite, Burmese fried rice, samusas, and a black rice salad. Everything was delicious, but I particularly enjoyed and recommend the noodles for a unique dish that is still accessible to all diners. We ordered the noodles and fried rice hot and didn't find them to be particularly spicy, which was a little disappointing for my family, but might be your cup of tea if you're not a fan of heat. I really appreciate that they allow you to explicitly indicate vegetarian or vegan preparation on any dish on the menu where it's possible. Fish sauce can be sneaky in East Asian noodle dishes and the fact that they've offered beforehand to omit it is a comfort to me as a plant based eater. Remember when Sun Cuisines was a great place to go? Yeah, me too. The ambience, service, and food used to be stellar! Not anymore. Four of us arrived at 5:30 on a Sunday evening after calling ahead to reserve a table. The restaurant wasn't terribly busy when we arrived. There was nobody there to greet us. A server pointed us to our table. (Note, did not seat us, just pointed.) We seated ourselves and began to peruse the menu. I remember when their menu was a classier affair, with lovely descriptions of their offerings. Now it's just a mashup of glitzy food photos. It's hard to read and it no longer lists prices. We had to scan the QR code pasted on the tabletop to find out the prices. I didn't hate that, but it was clumsy as the link took us straight to their takeout service. A server took our beverage orders and then vanished. It was 15 minutes before he returned with the waters and ginger tea and asked for our menu orders. Another 15 minutes passed. Nothing. And another 15 minutes. It was a full hour since we'd sat down before 1 appetizer and 1 salad were served. The 2 soups? Finally arrived almost 15 minutes after that. Our server's explanation during this time was that the kitchen was understaffed. Thinking it was a Bills Sunday, they didn't expect to be so busy. But the restaurant really wasn't busy. There were more empty tables than tables with patrons, although they did have a steady stream of people picking up take-out. (Who gets preferred treatment, the in-house diners or the folks picking up take-out?) The entrees were tasty when they finally arrived. But after sitting there waiting for what felt like forever, we ate a few bites and packed up the rest to take home. Because we asked, they discounted the bill by 10%. It was hot day. We were walking along Main Street under the burning sun looking for lunch. We decided to go to a place with Poke Bowls, but couldn't stand the heat so we changed our minds and chose Sun Restaurant which was on our way. Inside was nice, cool and very quiet. There were maybe two tables occupied. The interior is dark colored which added to the positive ambience and coziness. After a while we finally met our hostess/waitress. Generally everything was taking more time than expected, but we had plenty of time. The lunch menu had an option not on the website, the "Sun Special Lunch Box". It had little bit of everything plus soup of the day. There are some options, like the kind of roll you want California or Mango Roll. Unfortunately, our waitress didn't ask us what kind of rice we prefer. I would definitely skip black rice and go for the traditional white kind with seaweed paper if I had known. We ordered "Burmese Lunch Box" with Chicken Curry for $12.50 and "Thai Lunch Box" with Shrimps for $13.50. We both opted for California Rolls. When our boxes arrived we immediately had some issues. First I was concerned she forgot about our soups, but she didn't. She brought them later and it was miso which was in my opinion the best part of the meal. Next we had to ask for chopsticks, not a big deal, but I didn't want to eat my roll using fingers. The Veggie Spring Roll which was fried came without any sauce to dip in, so we had to ask about it, too. 'Premium House Salad' was a mystery for me. It didn't show on the menu's picture so 'premium' was kind of an intriguing term. However, it was just a little bit of sad looking romaine with pieces of cucumber and tomatoes, again no sauce or any dressings was available with that. I think it would be much better to replace it with rice because our proteins needed something to accompany. The Thai curry shrimps were tasty, but there was a lot of liquid. It would be perfect to mix it with some grain. My chicken curry should be called pulled chicken because of the consistency and the flavor. It didn't have any, or maybe had just slightly, taste of curry. If this wasn't enough, our fruit salad had unripe mango. I didn't eat it. So generally it was rather a lame experience. It was actually my second time at Sun Restaurant in Williamsville. The first time, I learned I'm not a fan of black rice sushi rolls. I gave a try one more time but still, not my thing. It's heavy and overpowers the taste of everything that is inside. Previously I also had Seafood in Clay Pot, but possibly wasn't a dish which made me come back again. The atmosphere is impressive. However, beautiful decor and calming music do not make for a good meal. My hubby ordered Mango chicken with a fried spring roll. I chose the sesame chicken. The fried spring roll came out first. It looked and smelled good. I was so hopeful that our food was going to be great! Hubby ate both spring rolls. Our entrees came out with tiny bowls of rice on the side. My plate was full of gross red colored muck. The chicken had a weird, spongy, grissle type texture. The whole dish consisted of this inedible "chicken" and yucky, red saucy stuff. There were 4 pieces of cold, hard broccoli thrown on the outer edges of the plate like an afterthought. I gave the terribly undercooked broccoli to my hubby, which he munched on because he wasn't impressed with his food either. His "chicken" looked like the same stuff that was on my plate - mostly gristle and fat literally swimming in red sauce. He tried to choke down as much as he could before he couldn't take any more. He also left quite a bit of food on his plate. Although the waiter was somewhat apologetic, he made no offer to take my uneaten entree off our bill, which was surprising. We paid the full amount, sans tip, and I treated my wonderful hubs to a delightful frozen yogurt dessert at YOTALITY nextdoor, which was a happy ending to the sad meal we just had. read more

My go-to Thai and Asian fusion spot! I love the green goddess sushi (vegan) with black rice, and the vegetable spring rolls! That is my usual order but everything I have tried has been absolutely delicious and fresh! My husband typically gets the sesame chicken and notices a drastic difference in the quality of the food compared to other places. I only knock them down 1 star because of how long the food takes to be ready. I have only ever ordered takeout online, both for ASAP and a set time, and I have never gotten my order at the time it says it will be ready. (And I order once per week usually). I've gotten the notice that it's ready before the set time, showed up at pick up time and waited 10 minutes, I've showed up 20 minutes late and they were just finishing up my order. I know we are still in a pandemic and there are staffing shortages so I try to take that into account with what time I place the order for, but I would love to see their timing improve. read more

They have Burmese, Japanese, and Thai. They have sushi rolls that are black rice - what! I've never heard or tried it before. They had a lot of yummy options. I ordered the grand avocado black rice sushi roll. It was delicious!! Very big and filling. I wasn't sure how I'd feel with the black rice, but I liked it! It's different and nice!! I also ordered a custom made avocado and cream cheese black rice sushi roll which was delicious!! I love avocado & cream cheese rolls so the black rice was a nice touch! I also ordered the vegetarian udon noodles. Vegetarians beware- they use fish paste (like most Asian restaurants) so just ask without fish paste! The udon noodles were alright. It lacked a little flavor but once I added pepper and a little bit of soy sauce, it was great!! We also ordered the seafood in clay pot and something else (I forget- sorry!) and it was really good! My dad really liked the seafood in clay pot dish. I really liked how they had a lot of vegetarian options and had glamorous vegetarian rolls. It's so hard to find vegetarian sushi that's full of ingredients. It's usually the standard avocado and cucumber roll -_- so it was super nice having a variety of vegetarian rolls!! The staff- wow!! I noticed every single restaurant during my trip in Toronto, Niagara Falls, Buffalo/Williamsville, and Nashville automatically gave me a plastic straw. It really irritated me that no one asked and I had to waste a plastic straw every time. It really upsetted me. So many plastic straws being used and wasted. I'm sure not everyone wants a straw too! I definitely don't want it if it's plastic. So it was REALLY AWESOME that he asked if I wanted a plastic straw before he automatically gave me one. This was the first and only restaurant that asked and I really really appreciated it. So THANK YOU!!! Keep doing that please!!! Sun Cuisines is the most well known Burmese restaurant in Buffalo and only having been to the other location, I was excited to visit the second location that had opened fairly recently in the Village of Williamsville. Initially walking in, you can tell that the whole place had been completely remodeled inside and a lot of thought went into it so that provides a nice ambience. I came with a party of six and had reservation. We ordered three appetizers and our main dishes. My only real complaint is that it probably took more than 40 minutes for our appetizers to come out. Our server never really checked in to let us know he progress of when they would come out. Besides that, everything was wonderful. We got a black sushi appetizer and I was pleasantly surprised at the freshness of the raw fish and black rice. My main dish was the chicken coconut soup was just delightful!! It is not something you can find at many places in Buffalo so the flavorfulness and uniqueness of the dish was really wonderful. Overall, they have unique dishes that are fresh, my only real complaint would be that the food comes out slowly with not the best service. However I think the tastiness and freshness of the dishes makes up for that. In fact, I am a little afraid because they deliver and have pickup and I live so close! Fantastic. I didn't know what to expect from this restaurant as I have never been to a Burmese restaurant. The food was sooo fresh and delicious! I couldn't stop eating it. We had sushi as an appetizer. Their Mango roll with the black rice was amazing, and it was so much fun to watch them make it. By far my favorite part of the meal was the pumpkin shrimp soup. Something I wouldn't normally get, but it was so creamy and the shrimp was large and cooked perfectly. I'm not sure how anyone eats Americanized "Chinese food" after eating from this place. There was no grease, no soggy rolls, just perfectly delicious food. Another thing that sets this place out from the others was the drink selections. They had flights of saki!! The restaurant looks so amazing. Their decor is really cool with bamboo and mirrors! The sushi that my husband had-- was a good palatable one. He had all of them at one go. I am not a huge fan of sushi but i tried the salmon sushi and kind of liked it. Wouldn't go in for a second bite. However, the Panang curry that I ordered was very very good. I do like a little creamy curry and a bit more spice, but I wont complain. The veggies were fresh and crunchy, there was ample chicken pieces and the curry itself was such a refreshing one. So i can imagine if someone comes in for the first time, will surely be blown away by their quality. Will I order my usual again from this place? I guess not. Still, it was among the best Thai dishes I've had in Buffalo. Sun Cuisines offers a healthy alternative to the traditional white sushi. Their sushi uses black rice which has a nuttier flavor. Additionally, the sushi is wrapped with rice paper rather than seaweed which also changes the flavor profile for people more familiar with the tangy sushi. We made reservations and found the place to be very nicely decorated. Once we were seated, it was a very long wait before a waiter came by with a menu, glasses of water. Since the restaurant was fairly empty, and we could see staff hanging around the bar, there didn't seem to be a reason for the wait. The food also took a while to come out, but we've experienced mixed prep time for sushi at different restaurants - our 2 faves (Fuji and Teton) can fluctuate wildly. Beautiful salad and very tasty miso soup included.The sushi boat we ordered was impressive (lobster roll, crab roll and sashimi) and the black sushi was a curious treat for the eyes and taste buds. The sashimi was generally fresh though some pieces were stuck together - knife skills or knife sharpness issues. One thing that did mar the evening was the bill. We decided to pay with cash, and for some reason, it took them 21 minutes to return. We had to flag down our waiter to remind them we were waiting for our change. In some restaurants, when you pay cash, there's a delay getting your change back as they hope you're leaving the entirety as tip. Since I don't usually tip 35%, I prefer to get my change and decide what the tip is. Yeah, call me old school that way. I'm not saying this is what happened at Sun, but the long wait for the change did remind me of other, less scrupulous restaurants. I generally prefer the white sushi rice, but Sun was a nice change, and they have a broad menu of Thai and Burmese dishes worth trying next time. And next time, I'll use plastic. read more

Normally this place is ok for quick food. I don't know what was going on but I ordered Pad Thai with duck and I got a roasted duck which is a not pad Thai. The server was hesitant to take it back. He said he could make the duck into pad Thai which sounded terrible since this duck is overly sweet. So I got a whole meal that I didn't eat boxed it up. I was so excited to hear Sun was coming to Williamsville and this location did not disappoint! I came for lunch and ordered the salmon Mega Sun Roll, which came with dumplings and soup. Everything was delicious. I felt like the mega roll was a little light on the salmon, but otherwise it was great. Everything tasted extremely fresh. The sun will come out tomorrow. Sun Cuisines is a nice restaurant in a awful plaza in Williamsville where most businesses don't succeed. This was my third time eating here in a year. I'll get to the point. The Food: For an appetizer my girlfriend and I had the sushi. No joke this was amazing and I'm picky on my sushi. The flavor was perfect and wasn't too fishy. Might be on of the best rolls I've had the Western New York area in a long time. For the main course I had the Pork Pad Tai. This was my second time having it. Fairly big size portion. I wish there was more pork. It's tasty and filling but not anything amazing! The Staff/Service: The waiter was very friendly and helpful with any questions. The service was fast. Ambiance: I like how the restaurant is set up. It has a nice date night feel with out being over fancy. You can dress up or be casual. Plenty of seating. Overall: Another solid experience at Sun. This is a go to restaurant. The food and service are excellent. The atmosphere is very relaxed.

Went in Saturday evening. Seated quickly. Waiter brought to the table. Waited a good 10-15 mins before a server acknowledged us... ordered dumplings and pad Thai. Took a bit to get the food.. over all the quality and taste was good. Will suggest to ask them to make the pad Thai spicy as it was mild... place was clean inside and inviting.. will be back at some point .. read more
