The sun will come out tomorrow. Sun Cuisines is a nice restaurant in a awful plaza in Williamsville where most businesses don't succeed. This was my third time eating here in a year. I'll get to the point. The Food: For an appetizer my girlfriend and I had the sushi. No joke this was amazing and I'm picky on my sushi. The flavor was perfect and wasn't too fishy. Might be on of the best rolls I've had the Western New York area in a long time. For the main course I had the Pork Pad Tai. This was my second time having it. Fairly big size portion. I wish there was more pork. It's tasty and filling but not anything amazing! The Staff/Service: The waiter was very friendly and helpful with any questions. The service was fast. Ambiance: I like how the restaurant is set up. It has a nice date night feel with out being over fancy. You can dress up or be casual. Plenty of seating. Overall: Another solid experience at Sun. Three points of Good. 1-Nice modern atmosphere, sizable place and seemed clean. 2-The food was good.....but for a Top Rated place I expected better. Early 50's fellow wearing a plaid shirt and ball cap eating behind the sushi bar most of the time. Tues, 4:50 and only one other table of 3 girls in the place who had already ordered. I waited 10 mins before going up to the sushi bar to give him my bev and app order on way to the restroom. On the way back he asked what I had ordered. Still just me and the 3 girls in the place. My Beef Curry dish was a stew that only needed ladling into a bowl but took 21 minutes....after my app. A cook brought it to me as I imagine he got tired of looking at it sit in the kitchen. Finished my meal and waited 15 mins for my check. Another 10 mins for him to come back for it. Left 10% so I saved the other 20%!!! We've been to the location on Niagara Street a few years ago but this is our 1st visit to this one. Service was excellent and portions were generous. The Sashimi pieces were VERY generous! My friend suggested this place for lunch. I was definitely interested in this place since there are not many Thai or Burmese restaurants in Buffalo. I am a huge sushi fan so I was interested in trying out sushi with black rice! Black rice sushi has a similar consistency to brown rice, a little on the "harder" side. I get really nervous ordering food I'm not familar with or not seeing a photo, but my Thai Kee Mao was delicious! It was a different twist to noodle dishes I'm generally used to. There was so much flavor and had broccoli and red peppers. I was surprised to see how this place also had a yelp coupon for a free ice cream (Green Tea or Red Bean)! The place was really clean and I really liked the decor. I would totally come here again to try other dishes. I am a notoriously picky eater that makes trying new flavor palettes and dishes about as easy as unmedicated childbirth experience. (I've done it twice, and it's not easy.) But I enjoyed myself at Sun Cuisines. In addition to hitting up the fabulous Yelp event, my husband and I ordered some items off the menu as I just had to see how different my favorite sushi rolls would taste rolls. And my did it taste nutritious and delicious. Both my husband and I were blown away at both the presentation and how everything paired well together. And the portions weren't bad either! The customer comes first at Sun, more than just about anywhere I've ever been in Buffalo. If you want to eat in a restaurant, Sun wants you to eat at theirs. Therefore, we should all want to eat at Sun! Vegans rejoice because fee places in town will be as happy to serve you, provide numerous options in every menu category, AND customize items on the menu for you. Appetizers, soups, salads, Thai entrees, Burmese entrees, black rice menu, and dessert options all include vegan options. See a local specialty you want to try? They will leave out the meat, seafood, fish seasoning, etc, and never make you feel bad for asking. Furthermore, all the food is delicious!! If you like spicy food, they won't disappoint, but they can also keep it mild. Great tofu dishes, noodle dishes, curries, soups, and black rice mango rolls. We are lucky to have two Suns in the area. Hmmmm, well, Sun is the epitome of just okay'ish Thai food for me. We have ordered takeout pick-up from here a handful of times, and ordering online via their website is easy. But the food continues to be meh', compared to our favorite Thai places in the 716. Prices are high for the average portion size and quality that you receive. For example, Pad Thai with tofu is over $14, and is served as a sloppy pile of noodles and veggies, no care to detail of presentation, with not much veggies at all, and a skimpy amount of tofu. At every other Thai restaurant we like, it is served with some care to the presentation, and a more substantial amount of veggies and tofu. The taste is decent, and they will accommodate dishes to be vegan when possible, so that is a plus. But what really prompted me to demote my review from three to two starts are some recent shoddy dine-in experiences. There is a handy parking lot out back. When we entered through the back door and were waiting at the counter area to be seated, my shoes were literally, seriously sticking to the floor. The first time we came in, I gave the benefit of the doubt that perhaps there was a recent spill. But then visiting again, yet again my shoes were sticking to the floor. I now definitely question the overall cleanliness of the restaurant, if the floor is this grimy. :-( A second issue we had was they refused to take a Yelp coupon. We dined in, checked in, and received a coupon. We came back about a week later to use the coupon, and the server refused to honor it. He said it was very old. I told him we were just in last week, and received the coupon in Yelp Deals just a week ago, it was not old. He still refused to accept the coupon. This is just very poor customer service. The coupon was a $5 savings, and it is just bad business to give a coupon and refuse to accept it a week later when it has no expiration date, over $5. I have worked in customer service, and no the customer is not always right, but in this case I was. Don't devalue a returning customer over $5, especially when your floor is filthy. Our conundrum with Sun is they are the most convenient Thai food for us, so chances are we will likely return, at least for takeout. But whenever we're able to pick another Thai option, Sun is definitely not my first choice. read more

I am picky about my sushi and these guys get 5 stars and two thumbs up! Three of my main sushi pet peeves: Cooked vs raw: I prefer cooked fish! How tight is the wrap? Please don't fall apart! Price: I'm not cheap but I'm not bringing in six figures either So I ordered the Golden Crispy Shrimp Roll. Cooked! The price was ok..$8.35 I think it was. Not crazy expensive... After all I was dining on Main St in Williamsville, so, enough said. Next... the roll. Would it make it to my mouth in one piece or would it fall apart when I just gaze at it? It was rolled just right, did not fall apart, and the pieces were good sized... just able to fit in my big mouth. Surprise of the meal: Black rice. It had a bit of a nutty flavor... subtle but noticeably not plain white rice. I enjoyed eating something that seemed a bit exotic. And I reasoned it may very well be healthier than traditional white rice. Second surprise of the meal: I loved it so much I ordered another one! I thought the interior decor was very nice, a great atmosphere. Our server was pleasant and on point refilling the water over and over. The only drawback was that because of that attentive server and his regenerating water pitcher, I had to stop to use the restroom on the way out. Have to be honest... I could not wait to get out of there. There was a funky sewer kind of smell in there that was gross... but the weather has been crazy stormy that week so I reasoned it may be attributed to that. So check out Sun Cuisines, have a good time with the black rice, and try not to drink too much water. Just sayin'. read more

My husband and I went to dinner there tonight and I want to start by saying the staff could not have been more responsive and patient. Several patrons were difficult and demanding and they were endlessly kind. We started with sweet potato sun roll. My husband wasn't really a fan of the combination I liked it, get the black rice it added a really nice sweetness. I ordered the mango chicken which I wasn't initially sure of but once I figured out the bite ratio of chicken, sauce and mango it was good. My husband ordered the pad prig pow which was good but he thought it was very under seasoned compared to when he had it there last several years ago. By far the star of the show was the pumpkin stew (shwe payon thi hin)! It tasted delicious, perfectly seasoned, and it was filling without being heavy. I really cannot recommend it enough. My only possible change might be to get it without a protein next time, I got it with beef but it didn't add much to the dish overall. read more

Delicious food, have gotten takeout from here many times. Our favorites are the Burmese Pumpkin Stew and the various fried rice dishes.

I hate to say it but I'm embarrassed I didn't know this location was even here three years after they opened. I was prepared to drive out to their Blackrock location which I've been to to discover one 5 minutes from my work! I ordered a regular Pad Thai and an order of fresh chicken spring rolls. Man, I thought nothing could unseat Teton Kitchen in my mind for Thai but I was impressed. That Pad Thai was fantastic and loaded with flavor. I loved and enjoyed every bite. Their chicken spring rolls (which fell apart unfortunately) were equally delicious and came with a super tasty peanut sauce for dipping. I really enjoy this place and their foods and I can't wait to try some of their famous black rice and try their Thai curry! The restaurant is nicely decorated and we were greeted promptly with a big smile. We had the Philadelphia Roll and Chicken Coconut Curry Soup to start followed by the Vegetable Pad Thai and Curry Chicken. Everything was so very flavorful and it was great to try something different. Well this place is going to the top of my list for favorite restaurants in the Buffalo area. To start, the restaurant is decorated beautifully. Its very modern and new. The menu has a wide variety of amazing looking options. There is a section for their black rice sushi and plates. Then they have a Burmese section as well as a Thai section. Deciding what to eat is definitely the hardest part. I went with a miso soup and a black rice roll since it's on their sign, I had to try it. The soup was very yummy. Now to the roll, I got a salmon special roll. This was INCREDIBLE. I love their use of fruits and veggies in the rolls, it gives it a unique twist. My roll had a chunk of mango on the top, as well as cream cheese and veggies inside accompanying the salmon. I loved it, I absolutely loved it. After much lurking and stalking, we were thrilled to see the new Sun finally flip on its "Open" sign. It's walking distance from our house, so you can just imagine our excitement at one of our favorite West Side restaurants setting up shop in our neighborhood. Overall, our first experience was pretty good. Service was excellent and the ambiance is great (although a little less authentic-feeling than its city location). We ordered the spicy crab rolls, which were excellent. The pad thai we split was also very good, although the noodles were a touch on the overcooked side. Of course, this was offset by the fact that it took our food only about 10 minutes to hit the table, which was great for my rumbling stomach. This place just opened up on Main St. in Williamsville. I joined several friends for a lovely dinner and we tried all kinds of sushi, main dishes, and desserts. I would suggest trying their black rice sushi that they are known for and the Panang Curry, medium spice level. The General Tso's Chicken was perfectly fried up and dished with plenty of sauce covering every morsel. The Pad Kee Mao was not super spicy nor the noodles overcooked or soggy. The noodles had a slight firmness but were cooked throughly and the dish had the proper ratio of noodles to veggies. The sides of rice looked like cones or little mountain peaks and we all had a laugh at how perfect it looked next to our dishes. The Thai iced coffee was practically a dessert on its own! Sweetened with milk and coconut, it was lovely to sip on a warm day and perks you right up! The Tom Yum soup and the pumpkin soup were not super spicy at all (even on medium spice). The pumpkin soup is bland initially on first taste but as you have a second and third bite you will taste the flavors of the other veggies mingled with the pumpkin and it's served in a pumpkin. Very original! The Tuna sushi, rainbow roll sushi, and the sweet potato sushi were all delicious. Not like some places that give you tons of rice with little fish, but equal amounts for the 8 piece rolls and arranged conservatively. The black rice does not overpower the fish nor undermine the flavor of the fish. A nice complement to the fish and veggies. The spring rolls and the samusa come with a special red sauce (house sauce) on the side that it not super spicy but gives both dishes a nice little kick to the appetizers. For dessert, I ordered the fried banana with green tea (or red bean) ice cream and my friends ordered the red bean so we could test both. The table was split on which was better (I liked the green tea with the bananas). The bananas came fried up in wontons shaped as triangles, with chocolate sauce swiped over the top. Perfect ending to the meal! Everyone tasted all dishes and we couldn't find one we didn't like, even with our varied tastes and the array of flavors we all selected. Service was super fast for our group of 9, the waiter Joe was exceptional in his knowledge and patience, and the decor is modern and classy. I will be back to try some of their other fusion dishes. read more

We love Sun's extensive menu, featuring Thai, Burmese, and sushi. The prices are fair and I've not had too many dishes that I don't like. The samusa appetizer is delicious, crunchy phyllo on the outside and a spiced potato mixture inside. The calamari is inconsistent, and the gyoza is very run of the mill- probably frozen. The black rice salad is supposedly something they're know for, and for good reason; it's delicious. It's a cute place in the village and our family likes it. My son really likes the green tea ice cream. If you have a baby just know that there is no changing table in either of the bathrooms. read more

I've heard a lot of great things about Sun cuisine, especially the black rice sushi, so of course I had to give it a try. I got the coconut shrimp roll with black rice and the chicken coconut noodle soup. My boyfriend got the catfish chowder. Neither of us were particularly fond of our meals. His dish came with so little vermicelli he had to eat a second dinner when he got home. I didn't really care for the sushi, it was pretty tasteless and wasn't worth the hype. My boyfriend did try some sushi from my friend's sushi platter and he said those tasted better, but they weren't better than the normal sushi we get at other places. Overall I don't quite understand the hype, maybe I didn't order the right dishes but no one at my table was particularly raving about their food. If you have never tried black rice sushi before I would still recommend trying it. I will probably need to give Sun Cuisine another try in the future. read more

Ended up coming here for lunch today (Saturday) after reading some reviews and wanting to try some of the less common sushi rolls they had. The place itself is very nicely decorated and has great atmosphere. The staff was super friendly and eat us quickly. The menu carries a bunch of different Thai, Burmese, and even some Asian fusion options. I ended up ordering the miso soup (a must for me) along with beef tataki roll which is basically vegetables and black rice with a nice piece of beef wrapped around it. The meal was absolutely delicious and is leaving me craving to try some more. I would definitely come back here! read more

I saw this on Facebook and, although I live in Arizona, I felt it was worth posting here on Yelp. If they were within 100 miles of me I'd go there as often as possible. "Little story. So my husband tells my son (who has autism) to run in and get a take-out menu from Sun Restaurant. They even practice it in the car beforehand. Then my son goes in and my husband is waiting...and waiting...and waiting...so finally decides to see what's going on. What's going on is that my son is at a table, eating. Apparently, he told the hostess "I'm hungry." So she sat him down and asked what he wanted to eat, and he answered: "beef." She told her cooks, "hurry, this boy is very hungry," and made him a beef curry with rice. She said that he was so sweet she was planning on letting him eat for free. Nice venue, it's a little dark with the lighting but a perfect date night. I had black sushi and miso soup that was delicious. The service was fast and staff is friendly. The price for portion is spot on. They have a full that is well priced. No changing tables in the bathrooms though. Overall a great place, I'll be back. read more

I enjoyed the sushi here I think this place is pretty good and I like the black rice concept. The sushi was good, the tempura was and is always my favorite but it's pretty hard to mess that up. We asked for nigiri with white rice and we were brought a sushi roll. The other sushi was good but didn't taste as fresh to me as other sushi places in the area. The ginger was not crisp or fresh tasting and the wasabi was straight horseradish. They have a ton else on the menu which is awesome and I can't wait to try some of the other options. It's kind of confusing that you can order by circling on your menu or by asking the server to write it down. I think that's where the confusion may have happened with our nigiri. Despite my boycotting the black rock location (severely deteriorated service, increased prices yet reduced portions - see my other review), I decided to give the new Williamsville location a try. I thought, maybe they'll have great lunch specials... not so much. First, the menu stated that you get soup and salad with your lunch, but apparently they've stopped doing the salad, which we were only told after we asked when the salads were coming. Already reducing your offerings after being open for only a little over month? Bad idea if you ask me. Not explaining that to your customers at the time of ordering? Even worse. Secondly, most of the "lunch special" menu started at $10 if it's vegetarian... with meats being an additional $1 and shrimp $2. So the prices aren't really all that "special", yet the portions are definitely of the "special" lunch sizes, that's for sure. Don't get me wrong, the food is tasty, the decor is nice, and the people are friendly; however, there was no organization surrounding who's serving which table. We sat at the table for at least 5 minutes (they were not busy at all, maybe 6 tables of customers) before someone brought a tray of water over and dropped 2 off at our table and said she would be right back to take our order. But then while she was dropping off all the other waters, another girl came and took our order, and then the first girl came back to take our order except we had already ordered. Btw, not all of them speak fluent English, when asked how spicy, my lunch companion said "barely any", and the girl could not understand and kept repeating "medium?" When our miso soups were dropped off, it was also on a tray full of others for other tables. I don't know why but I just felt like we were at some kind of cafeteria where everything was being mass produced and mass delivered. There was no rapport with any of the servers because they all have a hand in something and seem disorganized and lacked communication (also an issue at the black rock location). Normally I'm not this critical, but with so many other restaurants in the area (Saigon Bangkok, Korea house, wok and roll etc) offering delicious Asian food with larger portions, cheaper prices and better service, I can't help but be brutally honest - "I've had better". read more

Became a Sun's fan since I first tried their signature black rice sushi at their Black Rock location. And then they opened the Sun's Roll in downtown and started offering black rice sushi burritos. Now they even have a location 10 minutes away from where I live! This new location has a much more modern setting and larger dinning area. Although Sun also serve a variety of Thai cuisine I keep coming back mainly because of the black rice products! They never letted me down. Came here on a Friday night at around 7 it was pretty busy, luckily we didn't have to wait for long to be seated without a reservation as the place was packed. Total wait time from being seated to the arrival of our food was around an hour. I believe they changed the recipe of the Beef tataki black rice sushi. The sauce on top was absolutely unnecessary it covered the taste of the beef while the thin slice of beef was the whole point. They didn't use to add sauce as I recall or maybe different location has different recipe. Main dish was the Pineappple boat, simply amazing! Give it a shot if u haven't already. read more
