I came here with my daughter after getting our hair cut at Whacos (a great place near by with good prices). My daughter has gone vegan and I am trying to support her. She is so convicted and though she looks great and quite healthy, her convictions run much more deeply about the whys which are not just health based and I am very proud of her and perhaps a little convicted myself, but that is for another blog... SunCafe was interesting. The ambiance was right off of Cahuenga Blvd with two tables placed outside to signify patio seating, though it reminded me more of the kind of seating you might find at a carwash as you wait for your car to finish up. It may just be the location and that they don't have a lot of room to work with but I think that they could use a few large potted plants and perhaps a little more of a trendy picket fence or European style gated atmosphere to make the seating outside more inviting. The interior seating was a nice surprise. The staff was pleasant enough and brought us water in a glass bottle and left it at our table which was a nice touch. Though the water was warm and I know that there has got to be something about that being healthier, I have to have my ice or at least have a few bottles in the fridge and serve them colder! They brought ice to me, though I felt a little judged for asking (though that may have just been me being sensitive) My daughter chose the Portabella sandwich and I chose the marinera pizza. Each came with a choice of sides. I had veggies served raw with a pummice dip. All quite good. The one thing that I must say about the the vegan places that I have tried is don't call something a pizza when it is sooo not one. For $12 I got their version of a little pizza the size of a small pita with grilled carmelized onions and tomatoes (was that the marinera they were speaking of?) and some other ingredients specified on the menu when I read it. All tasty but not a pizza by any stretch of the imagination. Just call it something else! (like grilled carmelized veggies on a pita~ or even veggie pita pizza) And sorry, marinera is not grilled tomatoes. I would have chosen the pesto version if it had been explained to us better. I guess I feel that for around $30 + tip and no drinks it was a little pricey for lunch and though the service was friendly, I wish that they had spent more time being a little more informative in regard to the menu. They were obviously at change of shift when we arrived because they were counting receipts at the table behind us which was a little uncomfortable. There was metered parking in front of the restaurant and for some reason we only were able to put less than an hours worth in the meter we found down the street so that also, took a little away from the experience because we felt rushed. Voted by bestofraw.net as the Best Raw Food Restaurant in Los Angeles, I wanted to give their organic cuisine a try! Can't miss the beverages, they take up a third of the menu with fresh juices like: apple, beet, carrot, celery, cucumber, ginger, kale, lemon, orange & spinach and smoothies and shakes like: sweet kale, cacao, superfood, strawberry superfood, mint shamrock & pineapple superfood. The Fresh Young coconut is re-fresh-ing! cold & served cracked to order. Make sure you ask for a long spoon to help scoop the coconut goodness from its shell. I passed up my usual salad and sandwich options and went for the Specialty Supreme Pizza. Talk about different, this was my first experience trying a raw pizza. The raw sun crust texture was crunchy, the ingredients of rustic marinara, sun chorizo, tomato, cashew cheese, marinated bell pepper & onion was surprisingly good, a nice sweet n spicy blend to healthy pizza If i wasn't in a hurry I would have tried dessert, the Raw Cheesecake and dark chocolate brownie looked most divine. The reason for the 2-star is service is lacking! The workers are naturally beautiful and although physically present and pleasantly sweet, they are beyond unfocused. I was taken here by some vegan friends for my birthday, and despite being an avid meat eater, this taste of this food blew my mind (IS THIS REALLY NOT CHEESE?). Along with Real Food Daily, Cafe Gratitude, Crossroads, and the list could go on... Sun Cafe would be towards the top of that tasty list! Guilt-free noshing y'all! We had a short 20 minute wait as we arrived on a Saturday afternoon during lunch time but the staff was professional and friendly. The space is small but vibrant with a clientele that ranges from women in yoga clothes to mohawks and suits. On to the food... ah, the food. I had the toughest time fighting off the urge to order the entire menu. The good news was that both of my lunch dates dug the concept of us all ordering something different so that we could expand our taste options! I opted for the Southern-style goodies that included the Biscuits & Gravy starter and Mac & Cheese ($14) entree. I nearly ordered a Pineapple Superfood Shake ($7) too but knew that I'd have to be carried out of the restaurant if I did that. The Biscuits & Gravy ($6) were a smaller portion size but boy, did they pack a punch! The two open-faced wheat sliders bursted with flavors from the SunChorizo, cauliflower mash, spinach, and savory mushroom gravy. Up next was the Mac & Cheese... and I am almost mortified by how dang happy I was to have this steaming hot bowl of cashew cheese sauce, quinoa pasta, tomato, lemon basil, and garlic pecan crumble placed in front of me. The flavors meshes perfectly in this comfy dish yet I didn't feel bogged down or bored halfway through inhaling it like I normally do with some other takes on this comfort food classic. I could eat here everyday and feel refreshed. The food here is so healthy and packed with superfood and things you wouldnt normally think to eat that you just feel good having it. The shakes are huge and amazing, the lettuce leaf tacos are my favorite starter and when on the menu the vegan shepards pie is great! And im from England so I would know. They used to be located in a much smaller building and had to move and expand due to popular demand. What an awesome ambiance! This location is a new location for them-they have been here for roughly two months. I can't tell you how long this place has been on my bookmark. A lot of work and thought went into this place in regards to decor. I chose to sit outside and I loved the atmosphere from the lil fire pit to the nice cozy patio area. Service: From the moment I walked in, I was just laughing and chatting it up with the hostess. Our waitress also was a doll and so I really appreciated the great, friendly service. Food It was just okay in all honesty. The super kale smoothie..ohh my..my fellow yelpers did not let me down. I really liked it (tad too sweet for my taste but good). Being a meat and potatoes man, I have always had a LOVE/HATE relationship with the vegans and their food (and their hemp clothing). But this restaurant may very well have converted me to the enemy and their strange ways. I had: the vegan portobello sandwich nachos salad w/ natural onion rings and raw kelp noodles tiramisu. The food is so good I almost cried. I crave this food everyday now and I've only been there twice. My body responded so well to Vegan food. I didn't feel bloated and was full for HOURS. It's so good, the only thing I can truly compare it to is being "high". Literally when I eat here, I feel slightly high. How is it that the nachos taste so much like the real thing but BETTER?? How do they do that???! How can that be possible?? The nacho chips are replaced by jicama chips and the sauces are ambrosia. It tasted so cheesy but there's NO cheese. I'm going to keep this review brief. I like many things about SunCafe. I like the ambiance, which as the name implies, is bright, warm, and welcoming. I like the servers, who are friendly and attentive. I like the patio dining area because it's nice to eat outdoors in our pleasant SoCal weather. I like the food, which is tasty and well presented although I'd say the portions definitely run on the smaller side. What I strongly, strongly dislike are the prices. A lunch for two can easily run over $50! I don't mind paying extra for quality ingredients, a pleasant atmosphere, and even to support a cause (organic, cruelty free, etc.). But I certainly don't expect to pay this much for a meal and leave the restaurant still hungry. I think this may be a hit or miss issue depending on the entree. The Kale Colossus Salad is quite filling, but the Mac and Cheese looks more like an hors d'oeuvre than a meal. I would probably return to SunCafe, but only for special occasions and not as a regular dining spot. read more

After reading so many great reviews, I was really excited to try SunCafe Organic. Unfortunately, I think I set my expectations a little too high. I had made a 9pm reservation for two on a Saturday evening. The hostess was very sweet and showed us to the booth she had reserved for us. Our server came over and explained the menu and informed us about the specials. She said she would be back in a moment to take our order. About 10 minutes later she came back. That was pretty much how the rest of our service from her went. She just wasn't around, like I seriously never even saw her. Maybe she took a dinner break or had all of her other tables outside? Here are the details of what we ordered: -Lettuce Leaf Tacos (raw): These were my favorite. Great flavor and very filling. -Mac & Cheese: This was the most talked about dish in reviews. It was good, but I didn't find it to be as fabulous as I expected. However, it was luxuriously creamy and had some delicious burnt crispy sections from being baked in a skillet. -Garlic Italian Mushroom Pizza: There was just too much black garlic oil on here. It was simply overpowering. If there was less of that I think I would have actually enjoyed it. -Coffee Shake: This was my husband's drink choice. Not the best idea at 9pm, but he loved it. Definitely had quite the caffeine kick though! Would be perfect for brunch. The dishes all came out in a timely fashion, but none of them were brought by our server. After finishing our meal, our waitress was still nowhere to be found. I think another server could tell we were getting aggravated and brought our check to us. Portabello sandwich was okay.. but not so great for the $. Real Food Daily prices for food that doesn't really compare in quality. I took a girlfriend to a Kings game and in exchange she treated me to dinner. We parked at the meters in front. There is a small lot in front with valet. I recommend going this route. Both my friend and I ended up getting $65 parking tickets for expired meters. We sat outside because it was a gorgeous day. There's an outdoor fire pit, setting the perfect mood lighting for dinner. We split the tempeh blt and chili cheese fries. The cheese fries came out first. These were a bit of a letdown. I was expecting something resembling the real thing. What we got was boiled baby potatoes with beans and a dollop of "cheese". I get that they don't fry their food, but they should rename this dish. I couldn't detect any of the fake meat in the chili at all. We both regretted not getting the sun nachos. The blt came with a side of the best kale salad I've ever had. The creamy dressing was so good and I couldn't believe it was vegan. The focaccia bread was really good, too. Again, amazed that it was vegan. I loved the familiar addition of rosemary. For dessert, we ordered the raw cheesecakes. I got the pumpkin because it's a seasonal item and I'm a sucker for all things pumpkin. My friend got blueberry because the server told her he liked it better than cookies and cream. It was so pretty with that purple marbling. Both cheesecakes were good, but I think blueberry was a slight notch above pumpkin. The crusts were gluten free, I believe. They seemed to be nut-based. I was beyond happy to try this place out! We drove almost an hour to eat there. My expectations were very high and I wasn't disappointed. The place is nice and well decorated. The servers are great, good customer service etc. They change their menu from brunch to dinner and say they are closed but you can still order beverages while you wait for the menu change. The food is good, I enjoyed plenty of their raw vegan options and everything was delicious. The prices are a bit high and to be honest the price doesn't compare to the portions. They portions are very small. You can make reservations from the yelp app! The Peking situation is absolutely horrible! Very little parking right outside so good luck finding parking elsewhere. Sunpower (now SUNCAFE) is my favorite raw vegan restaurant in Los Angeles, and one of my favorite vegan restaurants overall. (Note, not all the food is raw, but it's all vegan) My first experience here was at a friend's birthday party, and I got to try a sampler of all their best dishes. I enjoyed it all so much and I felt great afterwards. The best things about this place is their sauces and raw pates. Better than Raw Loves Rawvolution in Santa Monica and better than Cru in Silverlake. First let me just say, as I've said previously, the Raw food rocks my socks. After eating a raw meal I feel energized and recharged. If I'm going out afterwards, I'm full of energy and will be able to party for hours. If I'm on a date, you can bet I'm gonna rock that with some extra gusto. It's that awesome. When I think about what I crave when I'm going there, there's quite a few dishes that I just love. Order the Kale Shake. You might think "Holy Crap, why is Kale being used in a shake?" TRUST ME. Kale is awesome in smoothies, in shakes, and in desserts because once sweetened up it's awesome. I learned this after trying their The nachos appetizer is just awesome. I suggest get it with the jicama instead of the chips. The crunchiness of the fresh vegetable with their spicy and well seasoned "taco meat" goes amazingly well together. If you're not sure, get it half and half, but I assure you you'll love the Jicama slices! New to their menu as of their third chef (they go through chefs fairly fast, which might not be a good thing) was garlic bread. Being a vegan, you just don't get decent buttery garlic bread anywhere. Here they have achieved that flavor that I haven't had since eating at it at Vinces Spaghetti when I was a kid. In terms of salads, get the Kale Salad. It's hard to get kale perfect so that it's not too crunchy, not too chewy, and not soggy. They nail it with perfect addition of nuts and creamy creamy sauces. In terms of entrees the pesto pizza is just awesome. The crust is crunchy and nutty, and the sauce is decadent. The toppings, slices of marinated mushrooms, are fantastic. One time I think the pizza was a bit overdone somehow, so they brought us out the raw kelp noodles in alfredo sauce to make up for it. I couldn't of been more pleased. The noodles are warm and the crunch is really nice.. and the sauce is extremely buttery and creamy. I wish I had their secret! The service is awesome too. I've met the owners a few times, and they're great people. I went there for my 39th birthday and they gave me dessert for free. All in all, check this place out. Suncafe is actually my first vegan, dine-in experience. To the point where I had to ask the waiter about the pork items to discover its vegan. smh. It definitely opened my eyes to the vegan culture. Since discovering Sun Power on August 20th, I have gone back 7 times. If that says anything about the "POWER" of Sun Power! I feel so good since doing my modified cleanse with a vegan meal plan. Sun Power truly assists me in this! Sun Power Burger is very filling. I ate half and had the other half for lunch the next day. The Supreme Raw Pizza was rich and filling. I barely ate a quarter of it before I was full. The Curry Salad is satisfying and delicious! It normally comes with marinated tofu but I substituted it with their Sun Power Chorizo. So good! I had that two days in a row! The Raw Kelp Noodles with Marinara is just as yummy as with the pesto sauce. I still marvel at the fact that everything on my plate is raw and vegan. It is too delicious to comprehend! The Strawberry Superfood Cashew Shake is nummy nummy! Still need to try the Kale shake! Their water is filtered Kangen water (7.5 pH) They also have 9.5 pH too! Overall, I thought SunCafe was pretty mediocre. The best part of this restaurant is the ambience. It's very picturesque and Instagrammable, has cute decor, and the area near the back with the bench has great natural lighting from the skylight. Great place to take pictures. However, the food was pretty mediocre. My friend ordered the "2x Award Winning Mac and Cheese" and I got the Sheppard's Pie. The mac & cheese didn't really taste like mac & cheese at all, and we were skeptical about the title of "award winning" for this dish. You could really taste the cashew; didn't taste like cashew cheese at all. I've had vegan cheeses that really tasted like actual cheese, and this is not one of them. The macaroni was like the kind you'd find in an Easy Mac package: thin, straight macaroni. The sheppard's pie was decent, but nothing too special. It was accompanied by a choice of side salad (kale or mixed green) and some garlic bread. I chose the mixed green salad, which was pretty plain and simple. The garlic bread was kind of bland and had a weird texture that I can't say I like for bread. I didn't hate the dish, but I don't think it was worth the money. As for service, it was kind of slow, even with more than half the restaurant being empty. We waited around for several minutes when we walked through the door and made eye contact with several employees without anyone telling us if we would be helped soon or not. After we were seated, it took a while for our waiter to come back and take our order, and then it took a longer than normal restaurant wait for us to get our food. However, I decided to have their Kale salad. I was surprised that the half portion of the kale salad is ginormous! It consisted of shredded kale, pine nuts, tomatoes and banana. I surprised myself that I actually could not finnish the half salad in one sitting. The service here is fast and prompt. Soooo GOOD! I'm a born-again vegan and after a week of my vegan cooking my goodness was this place amazing!! Found it on yelp. I would take it any day over the best milkshake in the world! Mmm creamy, chocolaty and somehow richer and better! Also, I wasn't completely sold on the crust for the pizza, it's a very distinct taste & texture but altogether is was good especially being raw. (Then again it was the Mr. Meat Eaters favorite so go figure.) Next on my " to try list" is the kale shake! One negative? One of my new favorite vegan restaurants! The 4.5 overall stars for this place does not lie - it really is that good. My friend and I decided to order two items to share and we got the Lettuce Tacos and Pesto Pizza with a Watermelon Lemonade. Lettuce Tacos: I loved this! It's the perfect starter. It was so light yet flavorful at the same time! The vegan chorizo they use adds the right amount of flavor and they use lettuce as the taco shells, hence lettuce tacos. Comes with four tacos. I'd say this is definitely one of the must-trys at SunCafe. Pesto Pizza: We got this with the SunCafe crust. The first few bites of this was pretty good, but afterwards it became just a little too flavorful... I think it's because of the olives? Or maybe the crust? Just a little overwhelming after a while, but either way it wasn't bad and I still plan on trying another pizza next time with the wheat crust! Also, this comes with a side so we got the Hummus and Pita. Watermelon Lemonade: I think they use fresh watermelon juice for this so it was really good and refreshing! $5 a glass is a little steep, but I guess you're really paying for quality. The place is a little bit hidden so pay attention to the signs and the address but it's a very nice pleasant cozy environments like a home. The staff is amazing they're all very helpful when you have any allergies to any questions about the menu, any dislikes or likes and want to substitutions there willing to accommodate you as best as they can. I'm always interested in checking out new Vegan spots, so I gave SunPower a try for dinner last night and had the following: *The "Lettuce Wrapped Taco Appetizer" which was very good. *The "BBQ Burger" which was pretty good, but dry. *The "Kale Soup" which was very good and a large portion, too. *The "SunPower Pizza" which was mouthwatering and delicious. *And an Arnold Palmer to drink, which was spicy and refreshing. Overall, I like SunPower and will go back at some point, but it feels more like a lunch spot to me than dinner. read more

This plant-based restaurant has a lovely outdoor patio and free parking lot during the day. I really enjoyed the large ceasar salad and tempeh BLT on gluten free ciabatta. Happy hour from 4-6pm weekdays is a great deal, with half-priced wine & beer & apps. Pinot Grigio during happy hour is only $4.50 per glass! Apps such as nachos, grilled veggie tacos and bbq cauliflower are under $5. They have many gluten-free items but sadly no gluten-free beer. I don't understand why they would not carry gluten-free beer when they highlight all their gluten-free menu options but I was super disappointed at this oversite. And you can get a full meal here no problem - one that even a carnivore will appreciate - with appetizers, a main course that is satisfying, and a great looking desert. Best vegan food! Stopped by this place while visiting Los Angeles back in February and fell in love! Everything I ordered was delicious, wouldn't even know it was vegan! Ladies and gentlemen, no words can describe how delicious this place is. I really don't understand how a raw vegan place can be this AMAZING! Someone from my workplace is an all organic, vegan, healthy freak and she told me about this place. I didn't really think anything of it, but boy was I wrong or what!!! My cousin and I decided to go for lunch today and so that's where it all began. The place is so cute once you walk in! They have both seating inside and outside. Of course, today in California the weather was beautiful like any other day so we decided to sit outside. I wish I knew the name of our waitress but she was super friendly! My cousin ordered the vanilla shake and I ordered the cacao(best thing on this planet next to water) it was super rich and amazing!! I really don't know any other words to describe the drinks. Anyways, we ordered the lettuce tacos(12 out of 10), pesto pizza(also a 12out of 10) and the portobello mushroom burger which was ok I guess but I personally didn't like it. Overall i am OBSESSED over this place and I will be back very soon! You get what you pay for. With the two shakes at $8 each and the three other meals it came out to $60 but honestly it was super worth it! Everyone must go! Loved it !!! This place was amazing. Great customer service. Food was delicious. We had Mac n cheese, pesto and broccoli pasta and avocado toast for dinner. Forgot to take a picture lol Then for dessert we had a cupcake and apple dessert. The dessert was on the too sweet side for me, but my son loved it. The parking for this place sucks so I recommend street parking. You get a nice date vibe at night because the lights are dimmed and they have really nice lights outside. It's definitely on the pricey side, which makes sense with the kind of ingredients they use. I really enjoyed the root vegetable au gratin it's vegetables like you've never had before. The nachos were really big we couldn't finish them with two people, so I recommend the mini if you aren't feeling up to par with a nacho challenge type serving size. The menu has almost everything you could think of from lasagna to tacos. It's like a vegan heaven. read more

Food was great! I got the lettuce tacos and mini-nachos. Both were very satisfying. The person I went with (not vegan) even loved the food. The staff was friendly! They made sure I was attended to, made suggestions when I asked for recommendations, and answered all my questions (yes, the menu is fully vegan!). Design of the space was beautiful! (And this is coming from someone who does interior design for a living). The only issue I had was that there was no signage right at the entrance (where the outdoor seating is at). I had to walk through all the outdoor seating to get inside and figure out that I need to sign in to be seated. I would definitely go again to try out the rest of the food. read more
