This delightful restaurant made what began as a train wreck of a night into the best one of our Austin trip! Joseph was such a good waiter. We waltzed in one hour before closing time and not for a second did we feel unwelcome. On the contrary, the entire staff was warm and friendly. There was a waitress who called my friend and I beautiful and made our experience that much more special. Now let's talk about the FOOD. Wowzaaaa the ceviche was fresh and limey, just perfect. The grill platter had chimichurri, the most delicious green beans I've had in a long time, and the steak was so good. But the highlight for me was definitely the crispiest Brussels sprouts I've ever had, stolen from my friend's plate. I'm not a Brussels sprout person but now I'm converted. I am so so so torn about this place. I guess that's why it's taken me so long to write a review even though I've been infrequently visiting since the first week the restaurant opened as Sundancer Grill about TWO years ago. And, I guess it's why this review is so scattered. :/ Merp! It's always nice to have a new place on the Lake. Dining and drinking with a view is my jam! But the food quality has to be solid and prices have to reflect said quality - lake view or not. The food at SG is SO hit or miss! If I would've written this review after my first three really disappointing visits, it would have easily been a 2 star, borderline 1: can't cook eggs correctly (they did get the poach right on a Benedict after three tries one visit - lol), French Toast is a joke, etc., and NO Brunch drink specials! Sacrilege! Still true FYI. Note: Sunday Brunch from 11-3. Arrived once at about 2:45, was seated, server finally came to table at at 3:01 and took our order only to return about 10 minutes later to inform us the kitchen said "no." [see pic of check-in] Come on! Contrarily, my most recent visit was surprisingly enjoyable, except the service. Sadly the one thing that has been consistent since day one - less than desirable, inattentive, unprofessional, not well trained waitstaff (this in my experience with the service industry is usually a reflection of poor management). They finally have real pint glasses for beer (not the cheap plastic ones); however, there is a bit of an identity crisis: $10-15 apps and entrées served on ceramic plates, in plastic baskets, or on tiny flimsy plastic throw away plates (that I'm not certain if they re-use or not). Pretty funny actually. IMHO, the way to approach this place is during Happy Hour for half off apps (the Crab Hush Puppies were actually fantastic and loaded with lump crab!) and a few drink specials (like $1 off) or visit on Tuesdays for BOGO Burgers (they are massive and quite good; dine-in only special). The HH Crab Hushpuppies and 2 burgers with fries for under 12 bucks (!) pushes SG just at the 4 star mark for me. Other than that, most food items I've tried have been lackluster, not worth the price, and it's really not a top pick to "do brunch" - they don't do it well. :'( Overall: Good view, open air concept is nice during the less sweltering days, and decent happy hour. Just don't go in expecting good customer service. Definitely an area in need of major improvement...keep on sailing! read more

Was in the area and hungry, saw the Yelp reply and decided to drop in. Small place with a great perch overlooking the marina and lake. All of the tables were full, which is always a good sign. We waited 45 minutes for a table for 5, at one point there were 6 empty tables in the dining room, none of them next to each other. If we weren't on vacation we probably would have left. All I can say is it was worth the wait! We ended up in Layton's (bartender) section. He took excellent care of us including some custom drinks that were AMAZING!!! Last Sunday was the second time I took my family to eat here. The first time was so long ago that I only remember that it was a good enough experience to give it a second try. The first lunch here was outside on the deck and the ambiance of watching the sailboats cruise in and out of the marina was a treat in itself. Last Sunday was a beautiful sunshiny day and the nice weather attracted a crowd at this lakeside grill. The hostess mentioned a wait time of 35-40 minutes but we were promptly seated in less than 20 minutes. While waiting for our table, I was able to order a couple of Pain Killers from the bar. Although the drinks weren't what we've come to expect at Pussers or Foxy's in BVI, they were good and were not stingy with the "good stuff". The waitress was pleasant but seemed a little overwhelmed with her station...(they were busy). My Costa Rican wife had been around Ceviche her entire life and we order it whenever we get the chance. The Ceviche was outstanding! Normally when Gringos or Mexicans make Ceviche, they tend to "cook" it too long. They leave it "cooking" in lime juice so long that the fish, octopus, shrimp or whatever meat it's made out of has a STRONG lime taste. Sure it should taste like lime but it should be tart. This Ceviche was clean, FRESH FISH, and had been cooked to perfection. It was a generous serving of fish. I ordered a bacon-wrapped shrimp dish and it was excellent! My shrimp also tasted fresh. I was born in Port Arthur so I have a pretty good idea of what fresh shrimp should taste like. My wife ordered a salad with grilled chicken and we shared dishes. Again, no disappointment here! Our daughter and her friend enjoyed their virgin Piña Coladas and even had to request a second helping. They were able to order chicken and fries so they were happy that the menu was kid friendly. Came here because we wanted to see the sunset and it was rated high. Took some friends from out of state. Was greeted promptly and sat down right away. We ordered some cocktails and they were good. My husband raved about the Mexican martini we skipped the appetizers since we had a late lunch but we ordered the popcorn or fried shrimp. She had no complaints, I ordered the stuffed salmon. It was cooked perfectly but lacked a little flavor, the other 2 members of the party ordered some sort of mixed entree with shrimp and steak. 1 member of our party has food allergies and asked the Brussels to not have the parm cheese added to it. The kitchen staff or server forgot and unfortunately all the food was on a bed of parm Brussels sprouts so the cheese touched everything on his plate. She brought more cheese-less Brussels out but the his dinner was ruined. The view was ok, the food was ok, nothing special to me but it's probably my own taste. Though the menu was small, I enjoyed my meal! The fries were excellent but the tater tots seemed a wee bit greasy and tasted like they sat in the fryer longer than they should have but weren't crispy enough either so it was a weird consistency and taste. We live nearby and decided to grab early dinner on a Friday night. Place was not unusually busy. Food I ordered the shrimp basket, my wife ordered the grilled chicken sandwich. Her sandwich and fries were good. I substituted Mac and cheese for my fries which was a mistake as it was too salty to eat. Shrimp was decent but not a good value- 5 small ish shrimp with a salty side and bland coleslaw for around $15.00. Service Again the place was not that busy. Our server Noah finally noticed us after a good 10 minutes. We asked up front for two ice waters and an unsweetened tea with sweetener. We got one ice water and one tea and only received sweetener after we asked again. Also, no sweet and low, which is normal for most restaurants. When the food arrived we had to ask for cocktail sauce and ketchup. So we sat there with our food getting cold waiting on condiments that are a given in any other restaurant. Noah did not return once after dropping off the cocktail sauce and ketchup to see how we were doing, he seemed to consciously ignore our table. I finished my meal with an empty tea glass, see photo. Great location with beautiful view! My wife located this business, which I had no idea was about 2 miles from home and I never knew existed. I followed the signs, seeing "yacht club" and quickly second guessing our summer day, flip flop and shorts attire, but not to worry...a very casual location and we fit right in. The food pricing was average and much better than I anticipated. The choices were plentiful and when the food finally arrived...it was also very good. My only issue was that my wife and son and I were seated and placed our orders 15 minutes prior to about 6 other couples, seated after us, and our food came out 10 minutes after theirs...so not sure what happened there. Came here for my graduation dinner with a party of 20 people. Service was a bit slow but it was only understandable considering the whole restaurant was full. They accommodated to me bringing my own cake and made sure it was brought out at the appropriate time! The food was good, and the view was spectacular. I got the mixed grill, and the seafood (bacon wrapped shrimp) was good! The steak was good with the green sauce. Mashed potatoes were so tasty! My parents loved their food. My bf liked his shrimp tacos. It was a good place for a family experience. The price was a tad high but it's only right since the location is so nice. Bought my dad and family for his 90th birthday and requested a quieter location which was provided. Then discovered a party of 19 with 12 kids would be seated next to us. I asked if they could move us and they were completely understanding and moved us. The food was great, we had salmon salad (awesome); catfish basket (very good); chicken sandwich (ok); the grill combo plate was outstanding. Appetizers were generous and drinks were very good. Prices were reasonable and for the amount and quality it was worth it. They surprised us with the bread pudding dessert for my dads birthday which was shared among the table. That was excellent. I had an extremely troubling experience here. I am an Austin native and have been coming to this spot for years. On Tuesday night, I was enjoying an evening on the lake with some out of town friends at our friend's kayak and boat rental business across the lake, after we had gotten off work. We spend a lot of time out at their business and usually paddle across the lake to eat at Sundancer Grill. Our friends had just closed up for the day and we wanted to take the out of towners to paddle over and eat at Sundancer. We arrived at the restaurant, said hello to the hostess, were seated outside and took our seats. After a few minutes, a waiter came out to provide waters, we commented on his bucket hat and how it would be a good idea to start selling these at our friend's business, and then the waiter said he'd be right back to take our orders for drinks and food. Some guy that I assume was the manager then came out and told us the waiter was tied up (not sure what that meant as we were one of five tables occupied in the entire restaurant) and that he would be taking our orders. He went on to say that it seemed we were over served and wouldn't be able to give us any type of alcoholic beverage. We are all 30 years old and over, and assumed this was a joke. No one had had anymore than one single beer the entire day (as we had just gotten off work). Once we realized this man was serious, we questioned what he was talking about as our behavior since arriving was more than normal, if not subdued. He wouldn't provide us an answer even after we questioned him again and respectfully asked for clarification so we could work to resolve the "issue". When we couldn't receive the decency of an answer, we told him we would take our business elsewhere and left. My friend who runs the business across the lake was very upset with this encounter as he recommends his patrons to paddle over for lunch/dinner every single day and their clientele base is only growing. This is no longer going to be something he recommends and this was made known to the staff working at the time, but no one seemed to care. I would truly like to understand the "issue" that seemed to have occurred causing the staff to treat us in this way, for absolutely no reason. Even the table next to us was confused as to what was happening. I would implore the owners to check the security cameras from the night (approximately 9:00pm - 9:07pm on Tuesday, August 10th) and observe our behavior as there is nothing that would indicate justification for how we were treated. Very weird for a lakeside bar and grill to turn away 5 paying customers, who were not drinking, on a Tuesday night during August when I have been to the establishment on a weekend when there were multiple belligerent parties out of control but no issues were had with them. Really cute place with good food after being on the water on all day. Our waitress started out awesome however and fizzled. She brought ice waters for all 8 immediately which we really needed. Then she just would disappear. I had a cheeseburger and fries and my daughter the fried shrimp. Both were very good. Two others ordered the chicken breast sandwich and it was inedible due to the char and zero flavor.
