So bummed to give this place a negative review, but it sounds like we had a very similar experience to one of the other reviewers on here. We were in the process of ordering and saw that we were being handed little cups of tartare sauce. Neither of us are big fans (personally prefer lemon/vinegar on our fish n chips), so we said that we didn't need any. Immediately we were asked, "tourists?" We're not tourists, nor should that matter. From then on the service seriously lacked. We continued to be polite (smiling, please, thank you, etc.), but got little-to-no response and felt like we were being judged for everything we did. When our food was ready, we also weren't acknowledged or told it was ready, despite waiting right there. It seemed like we were no longer welcome because we don't like tartare sauce?? Thinking back, we should have just taken the cups and thrown them away to avoid all of this, but that felt wasteful. We ended up eating outside, and that was nice, but overall it was not a good experience. TLDR: the fish was good, the chips were good, wish there was lemon/vinegar. Don't let them know you don't like/want tartare sauce. Unfortunately, we won't be returning due to the service. read more

I went to get the calamari but they unfortunately had sold out so I decided on the prawns and fries. The prawns were very fat and the batter light. The tartar sauce paired nicely. Definitely will be coming back again to get the calamari! The interior was nice but a little cold, plenty of seating though. There's outdoor seating but it was too cold to sit out there. What I sought is what I found. A solo meal, devoid of complex rituals: how long is the wait, leave a name, starve in line, seek waitstaff, etc. But I wanted a good fish, not the deep fried McDrek emulsfied and extruded. Felt like a been-there-forever beach spot found anywhere along the east coast's beach towns, yet it was Alki Beach, in sight of Seattle proper, but a world away, split off by traffic and temperament. Asked what to get, got a no nonsense 'buddy' perfunctory: Fish and Chips. No time for chatting, though noone else was in line at my early time. And it emerged, at the pickup counter, wrapped in butcher paper with some tartar and ketchup. Don't be fooled by its almost sad, forlorn look. It's my photography. This fish n chips shop serves great fish, they are located directly across from the beach. I ordered the combination meal with halibut, shrimp, oysters and fries. The fish and shellfish were cooked perfectly and had great flavor, the fries were a little overdone but had good flavor. Overall, I was satisfied with the food I did ordered, except for the side of coleslaw that wasn't very good. There were out of a lot of things unavailable, like scallops and iced tea. I had to order what was available. Also, they could not take American Express cards. The food was good, as well as the location. If you are looking for fish and chips, this is a good spot. read more

A cute small shop on Alki beach. Their fish and chips, albeit on the small size, were super high quality and not salty at all. Great coleslaw and chowder as well. However, price is high for the portion. The owner was also rather grumpy, at least on that day we went...so keep that in mind when you go check them out. read more

I love all of the one-star reviews. Looking for the manager? The owners work the front counter and fry the fish. Yes, they're abrupt. But they make the best fish and chips on Alki. I've been coming here for 30 years and have never had a problem with them. We ordered a large fish and chips and a clam chowder to share. The fish was flaky and not greasy. Hubby loved the breading (it was like the rougher breading, not beer battered). I prefer more beer batter style, but still liked it. The clam chowder was creamy and really good. I'm glad we got the large size as it was perfect for sharing! I have frequented Sunfish for over 30 years - not just as a customer - but also as an employee in my teen years. The brothers who own it, Michael and Peter, are salt-of-the-earth people! They hail from Greece, and a fishing background, so they KNOW fresh fish! As a former employee, I can assure you that they only use the highest-quality ingredients, and make everything, from the tartar sauce on up, from scratch. They change out the deep fryer oil all the time and separate the fries from the fish, so the oil doesn't give the fries that fishy taste and the food is never greasy. I can't tell you how much I love this spot!!! Such a gem at Alki. From the food to the owners, everything about this spot is just so wholesome. The owners are so kind. It may take a bit as they aren't this "fake customer service" but they are hard working and genuine. They work from sun up to sun down. They don't even let you write in a tip like all places ask for. I visited sunfish for the first time and I really enjoyed their cod fish and chips. The cod was delicious, tender and juicy with light breading. Fry's was kind of bland but malt vinegar fixed that problem. The tartar sauce was ok nothing special to my taste, it tasted more like mayo. To me the sauce has to elevate the flavor of the fish but instead it overpowers the fish. Clam chowder was nice creamy and tasted good. The atmosphere is great and enjoyable to be there. Nice big slices of cod (they didn't have salmon that day) that erre some of the better tasting fish I've had when getting fish and chips. The fries in the other hand were a letdown.
