Fresh on our Detroit-style pizza binge, our first since moving away from Detroit, we chose Sunny Hill for our next stop. We walked in right after they opened for a Saturday lunch and were the second group seated. Crunchy Cauliflower ($18) - Amazingly robustly crunchy breading surrounding a tender roasted cauliflower inner core. It's so evenly breaded and adheres so well to the moist interior that it almost seems like a commercially breaded frozen cauliflower. But these have to be homemade, right? They are sprinkled with a chili crisp-esque aleppo oil, which is dry rather than oily, and has a bit of sweetness to complement the heat. It's all on top of a super creamy and thick cashew and cilantro sauce. It's fresh and nutty, and really delicious. (5/5) Now onto the pizza. Taken from another of my reviews: there are several characteristics that define Detroit-style. Firstly, the base must be a thinner and chewier focaccia dough-like crust, pillowy on the interior and with a crispness on the bottom and sides that are somewhat greasy but not overladen*. There must be flavorful Wisconsin brick cheese (or blend), buttery and fatty, melted on top and spread until it spills over the sides of the crust, creating a crisp caramelized frico ring surrounding the pie. The pepperoni must be underneath the cheese**, and the flavorful tomato sauce, typically in several wide lines, is spread atop the cheese. There must not be too many toppings to prevent the crust from compressing and ruining the texture. *Note 1: The fat/grease is very important, both to allow the crust to crisp up and to act as a hydrophobic layer to prevent sogginess. **Note 2: This is the one trait I dislike since it makes the pepperoni limp and soaked with grease. Loyal w/ Pepperoni, 4-Square ($31) - Before I get started, I have to say that the pricing for the 4-Sq vs 8-Sq is bizarre. In no world should an 8-Sq pepperoni pizza be $56. Not to mention it's actually MORE expensive than the 4-Sq on a $ per square inch basis! And you get 4 less corners? People pay a premium at Jet's for their 8 corner pizza! I'm sorry, for a value proposition, this pizza gets a big fat zero. Usually Detroit-style take a while come out, typically 20+ minutes, often over 30 minutes. This one took less than 15, which I found very curious. Surprisingly, the pizza actually comes cut into four slices instead of six, unlike pretty much everywhere else on the West Coast. It looks picture perfect, with the two saucy racing stripes across the top and a superior lacy frico crust along all edges. It's seriously a sight to behold, one of the more perfect Detroit-style pizzas I've seen in a long time. It's after lifting a slice up that things start to unravel, at from a traditional technical perspective. Instead of baking the toppings on raw dough, Sunny Hill seems to either par or fully bake the crust before adding toppings, then bake again. This means the crust doesn't fully meld with the toppings, resulting in a crumb that's extremely airy and light and a taste that's somewhat disparate rather than harmonious. It's more akin to focaccia with toppings rather than pizza. And yet this allows the base to be fully fried on all sides, lending a superior buttery browned flavor. Unfortunately this method of assembly causes an issue - the frico literally slides off the bread. Even before picking up a slice, I could see it separating from the dough and melted cheese bleeding through. The top is a little more forgiving, so the melted mozzarella and brick cheese mixture does manage to mostly adhere. Speaking of the brick cheese, it really does make a huge difference in flavor. This blend is miles better in flavor complexity and fattiness as compared to most Detroit-style places around here that use pure mozzarella or a blend without brick cheese. The sauce is very good as well. It's balanced between sweetness and acidity, spiced just enough to add flavor but still keep the fresh zing of a great tomato sauce. On top of the sauce, the pepperoni is charred and cupped. It seems to be carefully applied so there aren't too many overlapping pieces. This ensures the pizza doesn't become too salty, which is really appreciated. Value-wise this pizza is terrible. $31 is the most I have ever paid for a 4-sq pizza. Heck, it's more than I've paid for many 8-sq pizzas. Luckily for Sunny Hill, I don't usually include value in my ratings, but I was seriously considering dropping the score here. (5/5) I think with this pizza, traditionalists will cry afoul. People who are more open minded will accept that this is a delicious pizza regardless of all the flaws. I'm in the latter group, although with a caveat: What Sunny Hill serves is emphatically not Detroit-style; It's a great Detroit-style-Inspired focaccia with toppings. Bathrooms - Two unisex rooms.

As a fan of Detroit-style pizza, Sunny Hill has been on my list for a while. Then I stumbled across an article stating that Sunny Hill has one of top burgers in Seattle, so I had to go check it out. This place was fairly busy upon arrival. Someone came up to us immediately and politely asked us to wait a few minutes for them to set up the table for us. As we were waiting, someone else showed up to take our drink orders. As soon as she took our order, our table was ready. Very systematic and phenomenal service! This is within the first 5 min of being there! The building seemed a bit old and there was a rustic vibe to it. It's not very big and a bit intimate. I wouldn't say it's really designed for groups bigger than 4. Our food came out at a reasonable time after ordering. We had ordered the Arcade square pie with mushrooms, the Lord General square pie, and a Sunny Smash Burger with cheese. Hot honey on the side. Arcade - wanted to keep it somewhat simple with this one so I can get a general understanding of their pizzas. It was loaded with toppings. A bit too much, but I believe it's because of the added mushrooms. The dough was slightly too chewy. I tried it with and without hot honey. I preferred it without. The pizza had too much going on. The flavors were there, but it was a bit heavy. Lord General - this pizza was much better. The flavors were more balanced. It was lighter on the toppings, making it easier to eat with the dough. The sausage and soppressata were a very good combo. They compliment each other very well. Sunny Smash Burger - this burger was very solid. Although it's a smash burger, it's pretty big. The toppings were simple and delicious. The onions was definitely the star of the show. It was heavy on the pickles. A bit too much for my liking, but would be great for pickle lovers. This is great alternative for people who don't want a pizza. Overall it was a great first experience. My only regret is not getting a round pizza to taste the crust. The groups around us all had round pizza and it looked amazing. I'll have to try it next time.

I stopped by Sunny Hill for a late lunch. They open at 4pm on weekdays and 12pm on weekends, making it a great spot for a weekend lunch. Service was friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was clean and inviting with plenty of natural light. They serve both round and Detroit-style square pies. I ordered the Loyal square pie (4 slices) with castelvetrano olives and mushroom. I liked the sauce and the crust, but I personally would've preferred a bit more sauce and olives on my pie. There are plenty of pizzas and toppings to choose from, and it's also possible to customize the order. The chocolate chip cookie, while a little pricey, was excellent and very tasty.

My review is for takeaway. I finished a walk around Green Lake and thought I definitely earned a pizza! I heard Sunny Hill had one of the best Detroit style pizza and round pizzas in Ballard. I placed an online order for their Lord General round pie. By the time I arrived at Sunny Hill pizza, my pie was ready! It was a Thursday night around 7:30pm and there were a few people in the restaurant. The server greeted me warmly and handed me my pie. It smelled really good! By the time I got home, the pizza was still warm. The sausage olive thin crust pizza was delicious. They added just the right amount of toppings so you can taste each flavor. The crust had nice coloring and it was crisp. Everyone has different preferences for their crusts and I like mine crisp vs chewy. I would go back and dine in to try their other pies.

Great little food stop. Friendly and quick service with street side seating, indoor seating and a rear heated seating area. We tried their square pizza and waffle fries. Both were great and loved their garlic ranch sauce and hot honey. Will definitely be back.

Sunny Hill has an inviting, neighborhood feel. It's in North Ballard by Golden Gardens so could be a good hang out or date spot. If you can, snag a table by the window. It's ideal for people-watching and soaking up the afternoon light! A random touch, their glass cups are adorably shaped and perfect for drinks. What We Ordered: Gem Lettuces ($18): The bonito lime Caesar dressing added a unique twist, and the furikake sprinkled on top gave it an umami kick. The romaine was fresh and crisp. 4/5. Really Good Burrata ($18): Kind of not good. The burrata wasn't quite there and the rhubarb yuzu kosho accompaniment didn't elevate the flavor as hoped. But honestly, for this dish, maybe it's just me and I can't appreciate the yuzu kosho! 2/5. Roasted Asparagus ($18): This dish had a lot going on, but in a good way, and the accompanying flavors complemented it well. 4/5. Death by Misadventure Square Pie ($30): The pizza was tasty but portion size was basically for a single person. It's a lovely spot to catch up with friends over a drink and a bite, but it may not be the best value. It feels very Seattle food scene in that way-- iykyk

I got the arcade pizza to go and ate it while walking around in the area. I should have taken a picture from the outset but I couldn't because I scarfed half of it down too quickly. It was incredibly good. My wife actually thought it was so so but I told her she needs to rewire her brain. I think it's because she's trying to lose weight so she doesn't like thick pizza. But for me this was heaven. The pepperoni was perfectly crusted. I believe that's the mallard effect or something other. I also liked how it had both sauce and tomatoes, so it tasted extra juicy. And what's good about this is that there's no crust with no toppings on it, this is good all the way around. I also saw the chef taking a baked chicken quarter out of the oven and throwing it over some greens. And a few other people sitting down got some meatballs that looked good. I need to come back here and try it off. The ambiance is pretty upscale but comfortable.

Saw the sunset at Golden Gardens and the smell of delicious pulled us here!

One of my favorite pizzas in the area. The crust was crispy yet still fluffy. Definitely recommend adding hot honey to pair with the pizza. The burrata appetizer was just as good as the pizza to me. The bread was flavorful (I think they add like fried or dried garlic?) and nice texture to go with the burrata. It is a bit pricey and the space is a bit cramped, but I would definitely come back to try more.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR GOOD DETROIT STYLE PIZZA IN YOUR AREA, STOP READING THIS AND NAVIGATE TO SUNNY HILL. We tried the smash burger and the cheese pizza here. As you can probably tell we were big fans of the pizza. Initially we had doubts that it could warrant the price in comparison to something like Jets Pizza, but after trying it we think it definitely does (or at least comes close). The pizza was not super greasy and the dough was so good. They don't try anything weird with the sauce it's just plain good sauce. The burger on the other hand was a bit dissapointing. It was really greasy and honestly it wasn't anything super special. The pizza was clearly the highlight. The service was great, nothing negative that stood out. We came a little before 5pm on Saturday and had no issue getting a table, but we did notice it started to get busy after 5. When we came there was also plenty of street parking. There is outdoor seating and a balcony out back.

We went on a Saturday at 4 pm and it wasn't too busy, so we got seated right away. They have plenty of seating to choose from - indoor, outdoor and backyard. Both outdoor spaces have heated lamps. They started getting busy around 5pm. We got our food pretty quickly and service was great. We ordered the burger with fries and the loyal Detroit style pizza. Let's start with the burger. It was pretty average. I liked the caramelized onions which added a nice sweetness to it. The party itself was a bit too salty for me. The fries were sooo good. You could tell they were made fresh and didn't taste processed or weren't super oily at all. Perfectly salted too! The pizza was one of the best I've had in Seattle. The crust and dough were good to perfection - beautifully crispy yet soft and chewy. The sauce was sweet and flavorful as well. Would definitely one back here for the pizza!

So disappointed! I tried the deep dish pizza for the first time. Too much bread, not enough toppings. Was dry and chewy. $12 for a tiny glass of wine. Beet salad at $16 was underwhelming. Unless you are in the neighborhood and starving, don't recommend. read more

We ordered two vegetarian pizzas, one round and one square. They were both delicious and my partner especially enjoyed the square deep dish style one. The restaurant is is a great looking space and is comfortable to be in. There were many families there with small children so maybe not the best date spot, but this is expected in a neighborhood joint. The service was excellent, probably the best I've had anywhere in the last 6 months. The servers were attentive, chatted us up, noticed low drinks etc. Would recommend. The only downside of this place is that it's pretty expensive. At The Ridge Pizza on Phinney we get a large pizza and a salad for what we paid for two small pizzas here. The service at Sunny Hill far exceeds the grumpy servers at the ridge though. read more

This place has been on my list for some time being a New York transplant in search of the best pizza. I was intrigued by the Detroit style pizza so we ordered the War Child (square). Really enjoyed it but for a little 4 slice pizza $29 felt like a bit much. On the same topic we also ordered the $7 chocolate cookie expecting for it to come warmed or have something else to justify the price but it was just a cookie, albeit very thick, in a to-go wrapper that we had to heat up and eat at home. The cookie was really good (there is sea salt on top if you're into that or if that is sacrilege to you, FYI), but for us just not worth the $7. I imagine the prices are on the high side due to it being a small space with limited seating. The table was a bit cramped for me as I was on the aisle side so had to be conscious of not impeding the aisle. Everything else was good. My girlfriend got their wine of the day (really good) and I got one of the hot toddy drinks (hit the spot). The appetizer was a flatbread with burrata cheese and some sort of jam and now I want to try and make something similar at home. You'll have to hunt for street parking (or take the bus). Would be 5 stars because it was really good. I'm ok paying up for local ingredients, but the $7 cookie is what tilted the scales towards leaving a 4 star rating. read more

We visited this spot after an enthusiastic recommendation from a friend. It's a lovely space in a cute area. It must be high rent because the value is off. There are no kid options, so you're going to have to pay a minimum of $24 for a cheese pizza if you bring a kid along with a standard palette. The starters are equally as pricey and a single cookie cost $7 for dessert. To make matters worse, the tip machine came out with settings at 20, 25, and 30%. We ended up overcharged in the end, but the manager quickly and kindly reversed that. One small pizza, a starter, and a cookie ended up costing over $90. Hmmmm. read more

We ordered the "Arcade" and the "War Child." The Arcade was incredibly salty. (I got 100% of my yearly sodium in one meal.) I'd rate both pizzas as mediocre. And they were pretty expensive ($60 for two smallish pizzas--one large pizza at Pagliacci's is $32.). When my wife picked the pizzas up at Sunny Hill, the server added a 20% tip to the order. My wife immediately changed the tip to zero. We won't be back. (We'll stick with Pagliacci's.) read more

Nice service, fair priced, great location, and dang good Detroit style pizza! What more could you want? I loved my time dining at Sunny Hill, mostly in part to the cozy atmosphere and friendly service. Felt like I was dining at a friend's house! We shared a square pie and loved every bite. Our first time at Sunny Hill and we will definitely be back soon. We walking in on a Friday night, it was packed but I was able to grab a table inside with no wait. The big guy who greeted us was super friendly and the entire staff were great in general. We ordered the tomato salad which was delicious. We were torn on what style of pizza to order but knew we wanted the Bunker. Our server was so awesome and gave us a solid recommendation to go with the Square style. It was soooo f-ing good! Light and crispy even though it was Detroit style. 10/10 recommend Also want to shout out our server who was awesome. read more

Yo this is the GOOD shit tho. People be out in restaurants risking their lives these days but I literally don't know why when you could just get takeout pizza from Sunny Hill and have the best dinner possible. Pros: - Detroit style pizza is BIG gas -- it's yummy and crunchy and chewy in all the right places - the staff are attentive and professional - the lil mamas peppers + sausage is a match made in HEAVEN Cons: - none Yeah anyway this place bangs and I'm so glad it exists. read more

Spectacular - I wish my conscience would let me keep this to myself - but oh well, here you go.... Spent the last 4 years looking for the best burger in Seattle - and BAM! Totally unexpected Sunny Hill nailed it. I was in the area in a nice day and just wanted to grab some lunch. Little did I know how good their food was. I sat on their outdoor area and drank a premixed cocktail and enjoyed my to-go burger there on their patio/sidewalk. The cocktails were so good I brought one home for later. Enjoy! read more

Super solid neighborhood spot with both regular and thick square pizza. Service is prompt and friendly, though they do get fairly busy. The last time we got the Caesar salad it was overwhelming salty. We've enjoyed most of the apps and pizza we have tried. read more

Food is fantastic, service is fantastic, drinks are fantastic. Giving a 5/5 because you really don't feel like you're in Seattle here! Only gripe is that during this time of year it's 1,000 degrees if you eat inside and pretty comparable outside (those heat lamps are strong)! Hopefully they can figure out a better way to regulate the temperature, because it did make dining in less comfortable. Other than that, Sunny Hill is perfect. read more

We tried the "Detroit Style" square pie. As consumers of actual Detroit Style pizza, this half hearted attempt did not fool us. Actual Detroit style, like all good pizza, has fresh unbaked dough as the base. Sunny Hill for some strange reason thinks it is OK to start with a pre-baked base that appears to be something like ciabatta. All I can say is it does not work. Our pies were in the oven such a short time that the center of the pre-baked base did not even get hot. To top off the indignity of this ersatz Detroit Style pizza, it is extraordinarily expensive. Based on our experience with the Jet's Pizza chain, which makes delicious Detroit Style pizza using unbaked dough as the base, Sunny Hill's is more than double their price. Aside from the disappointing pizza, we pre-ordered the day before. Upon arrival at our requested time on a Friday at 7 PM, our order had not even been started. We had to wait way too long to be disappointed by this pizza. Had the pizza been great we probably would not have minded the wait. While waiting I had the opportunity to observe the kitchen activity. The traditional round pies looked like they were much better and more authentic than the Detroit Style square pies. A word to the wise, stick with the round pies! read more

I saw the Times review on best takeout fries in Seattle. Yep, it all true. Those waffle fries are killer and still very crispy after a 5 minute drive home. My only complaint is that they were extra salty. I'll be adding a note to my next order asking for a light hand with the salt, otherwise I'm happy. We ordered a square pizza, 2 burgers, fries and an order of meatballs w/polenta. It was more than enough food for 4 with 1/2 the pizza and a meatball left over. It was close to $100 after tax and tip, so it's not going to be a weekly dinner option, but for sure I will be getting waffle fries on the regular. read more

Updated Post after eating here for the 2nd time. I was craving the square arcade pizza so my husband and I came in for dinner. I was super disappointed the 2nd time. The pizza wasn't hot, it was barely warm. There were hardly any toppings on it. My husband got the burger with a lettuce wrap and then a side of fries. The burger was tiny and the fries didn't come out with the burger. The fries came out after my husband ate his small, boring, burger. The reason to order fries is to eat with the burger. There was no apology about at all. I feel they should have done something to make up for their mistake. When they come around with the machine to pay, please note that their tip percentages are based on the total bill with tax. That is not OK. You don't tip on the tax, because tax is not a service the restaurant provided so it's uncool they're doing that. We will NOT be back. This place is outrageously priced for the amount and quality of food you get. Do yourself a favor and if you want the Detroit style pizza, go to Costco and buy the 2 pack frozen Detroit style pizza for $11.99. It's delicious and you'll save yourself $30 on one pizza. Or, go to Station 18 and get a great pizza for $16. Original Post: We ordered the square Arcade pizza that comes with pepperoni and pickled serrano and it was absolutely delicious. The crust around the pizza is this lovely melted, crusty cheese. Toppings on the pizza were really good. The downside is that this pizza is literally 4 pieces. It's 8 1/2" x 11' and it's $26. That's quite overpriced if you ask me. We'd order this pizza to go once a week but not for $26. Not a fan of the tiny glasses for drinks. Can you give me a normal size glass - please.... And when they bring the machine around to pay, their tip percentages include the total INCLUDING tax. That's really deceptive and wrong because tipping is based on the total bill before tax. If it wasn't for the price and deceptive tipping practice, I would have given this 5 stars. read more

Let me first by saying I love that Sunny Hill is within walking distance to us and their online ordering system is great. We've had their deep dish and regular pizza and it was okay. Nothing spectacular. When we saw they started brunch it looked amazing on Instagram, so come Tuesday I was quick to order my Sunday brunch ahead of time. We ordered a porchetta breakfast sandwich and one of their hash brown dishes. The food was so salty it was almost inedible, and the reason I say almost is because we spent $35 on two breakfast items, you better believe we ate that. We are no strangers to the culinary world, so this was extremely disappointing. 10 minutes after eating and my mouth is still tingling from the amount of salt they used. Adding to my review: originally posted this as a 3 star review however within an hour of posting, Sarah from Sunny Hill called me to discuss. They offered me a full refund and said they wanted my experience to be a good one. I appreciate the quick response to this and I will be go back and try them again. read more

Some of the best pizza I've had in Seattle! My boyfriend is from Detroit and thought they did great on the Detroit style; I don't have the Detroit background but the pizza was SO good - crispy, buttery, cheesy sides and the round pepperoni cups. Detroit style was what got us wanting to try this but we also ordered a Speckoli and it was also very good! We did curbside which was super slick. Well for certain be back and I'd even bring out of towners here. I am giving it 4 stars only because I called to add a side of "feta ranch" (how good does that sound?!) which I had forgotten to put on initially and they took that down and said they'd add it to the card they have. However, sadly, this wasn't in the order when we got it home. Any other fellow sauce/condiment lover knows how this can be a bummer! That's still understandable, but when I called to make sure we hadn't been charged for it since we didn't get it, the person on the phone sounded annoyed/irritated and almost a bit rude...and not apologetic at all. It was weird since they were super friendly when I placed the order and we otherwise really liked everything but it was just kind of a bad ending. But we'll be back! read more

First time at Sunny Hill - had a really nice meal with my family for Father's Day. We got a couple different (round) pizzas which were delicious, some fried spicy cauliflower which was really tasty and some mushroom toast which I thought was 'good.'. Had some of their seasonal lemonade which was amazing as well. I do wish we had been able to have the Detroit style/square-pan Pizza. It was my driver for wanting to go there for Father's Day and we live about an hour away so I was a bit bummed. Unfortunately, I'm not able to have cheese on pizzas anymore due to an intolerance, but I've been having pizza for years without cheese including many Detroit and Deep Dish (which have become favorites of mine over the years) and they said they weren't able to accommodate. I suppose they have their own reasons, but I've never encountered a place that wouldn't accommodate that - it's not that uncommon. I'd love to go back sometime but as far away as it is from us, I'd really want to try the Detroit style... hoping they'll accommodate at some point. read more

Awesome little restaurant. All staff, especially the waiters are very friendly, nice, helpful, pet lovers, and professional. The food is good especially the hamburger and fries. And I love the grill onions. It's a little pricey, but worth it. The square pizzas and salads. You won't be disappointed or hungry. It's a small neighborhood and parking can be difficult. read more

It's a casual pizzeria, on one of their busiest days ever. Setting and cleaning up the table (especially when seated outside) is not a problem for our group as we do it every week. Which is why it's upsetting that we opened our spot to someone that left such a nasty review. What stood out to me wasn't poor service. It's that despite how overwhelming it must have been to work post-FIFA, Karin was able to take orders, bartend, serve food, and close out checks with professionalism. Sometimes no matter how much effort someone puts in, not everyone leaves happy. The pizza is fantastic! I love showing up every week and trying what new slice they have come up with (in the year that I've been coming here there legit hasn't been a repeat). Despite the busy night, our server checked on us regularly and was very personable, stopping to chat with us about the local sports scene. There's plenty to look at, inside and out. If you can snag a seat outside, you'll get to enjoy the waterfront. Inside, the decor is industrial but fun. Not sure if this runs all the time, but when we were there, the tvs were playing vintage beer ads, which was quite fun. They also sell some pretty good t-shirt designs. As others have mentioned, it's that taller bartender (Alex?) who repeatedly comes across as arrogant and dismissive to us; a less than desirable character trait for a bartender. It's such a pity because that is the sole reason we now lead our groups to spend their money and patronize other establishments instead. Recently we did give Diller another try, but sadly it's the same story and thus this feedback. Hospitality makes a HUGE difference. Bartending isn't just about making a good drink and expecting tips. As someone who tended bar all over Seattle for 23 years, I know how much energy and attitude shape a guest's night. When the service feels cold and passive-aggressively rude, it's hard to feel good about the experience. It's disappointing, because this place has so much potential. Hopefully management considers bringing in weekend staff whose personalities reflect the warmth and atmosphere the space deserves, there are plenty of more qualified bartenders in Seattle that would gladly fill their spot.
