This is an authentic diner with good food at reasonable prices for the locale. I went for breakfast three times during my visit to mid coast Maine, and all were very good. It's hard to believe a place like this actually exists. It's one of few "hole in the wall" establishments that live up to the expectations. I've never had better eggs anywhere else in the country. They were just eggs. Nothing special, nothing fancy. No unique ingredients or secret recipes. Just eggs. Yet, nothing else I've had can compare. The taste, the texture, the presentation - all of it. Phenomenal!! The food, service and environment was great. Although the restaurant is on the smaller size it is very quaint. I had the blueberry pancakes which were outstanding and filled with blueberries. My husband had the french toast which was light and fluffy. Even though portions were huge, we had heard their blueberry muffins were homemade, so we ordered one to take home with us. It was fantastic & well worth it. It seems most New England older coastal towns have short cobblestone sidewalks - which are adorable and I wore a smile of happiness from around the corner, under the lifted Impatiens within polar white latticework. To click my heels in that moment like Singing in the Rain (Dick Van Dyke?) Waving to the morning faces drowning in the sun of another summer morning. Eggs Bene brought me but I'm always immediately thinking of Benedict Arnold's story when I hear the name - and he deserved what he got - the homemade Corned Beef hash confirmed my reservation. The yolk broke upon the first light explorotory piercing of the fine thin egg fleas and toasted rye is the preferred transport for me. People here like me, they're engaging and I see the sincerity in they're faces, unlike many of my inland experiences and fool hearted expectations. By 11am, our tummies start to growl after a busy morning of patient care and we start thinking about tasty lunch food. You can't go wrong with chicken tenders cooked to crispiness on the outside and tenderness on the inside. It comes with crispy fries (not greasy & not tasting like old grease). The short walk to Southgate from BIW fuels our hunger and we are always pleased after lunch and ready to tackle the afternoon workday. It's also located in the touristy historic section of Bath, Maine if you are visiting. They close at 1pm right after breakfast and lunch service so plan accordingly. read more

If there is the grilled cheese sandwich and turkey noodle soup special, get one there and another to take home. When there are cakes on the counter, give them a look cause they are so good. The folks who work there do a great job handling oodles of folks eager for a great meal. Bath must be a per capita breakfast joint leader. This is the sixth place for your early meal that has opened in this increasingly happening town. It is really not new, having moved from southgate across the shipyard, but the new location in town is ideal for breakfast before walking around to shop, explore galleries and bookstores (3!). I stumbled across this mom and pop place while on the most unexpected time, but after giving it a shot at 7am I tell you it's worth it, the food taste fresh, the service was nice and after hearing the back story you kinda want to root for their success. But besides that the food was great and at a reasonable price, yes the place is kinda small which is the reason for the 4/5 but they make up for it with the home feeling and at 7am that's what you kinda need to feel at home. Their menu is nice and simple nothing exaggerated, and the service was nice and fast but not too rushed. Overall 4/5 and hoping this place stays, for the next time I am back in maine I know where to get my breakfast at! read more

Fort time here, it's a great little breakfast spot. I had the Southgate omelet with hash browns. The omelet was an everything but the kitchen sink and cooked to perfection. I asked for the hash browns to be crispy and that's exactly how they were prepared. I was told by several coworkers to next time try the breakfast burrito. read more

I got the eggs Benedict and was so happy to see that it wasn't an over cooked mess. Delicious! My daughter got a pancake and bacon and loved it. This place is great, very family friendly. There's coloring books and toys for kids to use. I went with a family member in a wheelchair, and he was able to use the restroom here, always a plus. This is a recent find for us and we are so glad we gave it a try. Maine has many breakfast/lunch cafes, and this one does not disappoint. The staff is friendly, they are taking Covid precautions, and the food is delicious. The place is small, but cozy. We were welcomed upon entering, and the food came out quickly. sh"I went to Southgate, recently on a Saturday morning with my two grad daughters. The younger one, 12, ordered pancakes, hash browns and bacon. The older one, 16, ordered about the same. I ordered one egg, cooked medium, home made corned beef hash and coffee. The 12 y.o said "the home fries don't have any onions", something most Mainers add to home fries. The older one didn't say much, but I sure did. My egg was over REALLY EASY, barely cooked and so runny, YUCK. The corned beef hash was out of a can!!!!! When I went to the counter to pay, the lady asked me if everything was "ok" and I said NO (didn't yell). Just told her what I was complaining about and she had the nerve to say, "Oh, you must have gotten the canned corned beef hash" DUH I told her if the canned is on the menu along with the "home made" people would have a better insight as to what they are getting. She then took NINE dollars off my bill. I will never go there again. read more
