This is a comforting retreat from an overload of fried seafood. My wife and I ordered the tofu (not fried) vermicelli bowls. Generous size with a good amount of veggies. Kids had the grilled chicken over rice and scarfed it all down. If you're feeling adventurous, try the durian smoothie. It's made from real durian and it's fantastic! It's not a good sign when you go into a restaurant during dinner hour on the weekends and find the place empty, but I'll have to guess that it's just because the locals don't know about this gem yet. Good. More noodles for me! I had bun. It was so simple and so delicious, with lettuce, pickled carrots, Thai basil, cucumber, bean sprouts, and some of the most perfectly cooked tofu I've had in a long time. And rice vermicelli, of course. My dining companion had beef pho, which he said was also really good. He said the broth was perfectly seasoned. A warning - he ordered a medium size. It was as big as your head. (They also offer a large. I'm guessing they bring out a gallon bucket for that!) He ate every last drop of it, too - it was that good. The pho is amazing no surprise. Yet the hot and sour soup is the best i have ever had. My friend and I go about twice a month; more in the winter and order two big bowls of two different soups. We eat half and then trade. It is awesome tradition. The portions are so large one is always taking something home. This used to be Saigon Cafe. The new place does not live up to the former restaurant. It is a BYOB but it does not advertise it. Being your own water, extra napkins & soy sauce. Service is terrible. This place is decent for being the only Vietnamese restaurant here on the island. And for that I'm going to assume getting international food out here is costly so that's why they charge so much for their dishes. Im not use to the pho here, a little blain but it's enough for you to feel like it hits the spot. The bbh here is not too bad! It's probably what I consistently order the most here and the grilled pork with rice. The staff is friendly I think some of them are Vietnamese, which is cool because I haven't bumped into many Asians here in Newport or Middletown. Everything they have here tastes like the dish you expect, it's just toned down a lot on flavor. Price is expensive but I can't blame them, it's the only viet place here. We are maybe here 1-2 time a month. I gave 4 stars because although I don't think it's as authentic, they are very accommodating, very friendly and they are always busy here, some might argue that I should be rating it on food more so than the service, but I actually enjoy the staff here. For a while I passed by those place thinking they were just a breakfast place but one day I stopped in and was so glad I did!! I love Phö and it's not a common cuisine in this area so to have found this place is outstanding! Every once in awhile i will crave pho, and then eat it for 5 days straight. So ive eaten plenty of pho in my day. This joint is right up there with the best ive had. The broth is good, the meat is good, veggies are fresh. I got takeout....they skimped a bit on the meat, but ok, fine. This review is limited to the pho. I haven't tried anything else here. I've had the pho a few times. It tastes good, but it's heavy on noodles and light on meat. The tripe and tendon pieces are itty-bitty. There's no other Vietnamese options around, so it will satisfy a craving. But they'd have to up their game if they were located in a bigger city. read more

Mediocre and pricy Vietnamese food for the amount they give you. Pretty disappointed. I got the pad thai and it was made with the pho noodles, not the flat noodles and it was greasy and on the sweet/sticky side. My friends got the fried rice and loiemain .. Not good either. This is the only Viet place near Newport so our options were limited, but the service was fantastic and the food was just as good. The rolls were amazing, the pho was very flavorful, and the pork chop on rice was my favorite. Thank goodness this place was here otherwise we would have had to travel to Providence for some pho. Sunrise is a wonderful place. Having lived in Vietnam, I can attest to the fact that that the food is authentic southern style and always fresh. The decor is not much to look at, but you should really go for the pho and the garden rolls! Also, I have been bringing my kid here since he was old enough to eat solid food and he really enjoys the grilled pork and the fish tank. The owners often have their children in the restaraunt on the weekend, so you know it's a very family friendly place! read more

Sunrise has become a weekly staple for my coworkers and I. They serve great Pho, fried rice dishes, and Vermicelli. I have yet to try one of the stir fry dishes or fried noodle dishes, but I can safely assume they will be just as great. The atmosphere music is pleasant as well. Sunrise is a GEM! My husband works down in Newport often, and pretty much every time we are in town we stop by to get some pho. This place is seriously one of my favorite establishments, no matter what time of the year. Pho is hot soup, but I'd eat it on a 90 degree day from Sunrise in a heartbeat. I will be honest, the first time I stopped in, I was slightly off-put by the fact that it is in a small strip mall and it doesn't look promising on the outside. Well, GO IN ANYWAY. You won't be disappointed! The service can be a little bit slow, so try not to go in if you're in a rush, but the food is totally worth the wait. We also love getting their summer rolls. They always taste fresh and delicious. We were just saying that we always get the same thing when we go, but we have a friend who has tried something new on each visit and has never been disappointed. I should probably branch out and try more of their menu selections, and I can guarantee that I will be back again to see what else they have to offer. read more

This place opened up sometime last year in the previously occupied Saigon Cafe. It is waaaay better that the old place it replaced. I've only had the pho and lemongrass soup, but they are always good everytime I come in.
