I told my buddy about how this place served pho, so he wanted to come here to try it. From my last review, the service is still a little slow. There was only one Vietnamese female working the tables. There was a male that comes out from the kitchen that could help her out. I ordered the B8 pho, the one with all of the beef pieces in it. We also ordered the spring roll. The spring roll was whatever. I had better. The peanut sauce was really thin and wasn't that flavorful. The pho was decent. The broth has good flavor. They had all of the pieces of beef that pho should have, so that was a plus. The noodles were not chewy, so good there too. The bean sprouts were horrible. Very soggy. read more

Good local spot - authentic Vietnamese food. I have family friends that are Cambodian and worked at their restaurant - and one of the cooks was Vietnamese and this restaurant made me feel like i was there :) always a good thing. Their spring rolls and egg rolls are great, peanut sauce is good. I've tried the pad thai and the pork chops - very tasty. Service is quick and not expensive. Unbelievably mediocre...at best!! I ordered the pork chop with rice, and as an appetizer egg roll. I initially asked for a half order of egg roll thinking that it would come out with six pieces, but the lady told me it was two pieces so I just opted for a full order of egg roll. When it came out I swear it had to be frozen and prepackaged lumpia that they just microwaved. It was bland and the way that the wrap was folded, it had to be pre-manufactured. It also came out with a half-torn piece of iceberg lettuce, it honestly looked pretty sad. The eggroll was about an inch and a half long, it came with two of them and they charge $5.50 for it, unbelievable! When the pork chop him out, it looked a lot better but the first thing I noticed was the Porkchop was about a quarter of an inch thick. Are kidding me??? The pork chop with so damn thin! You may pull the wool over the eyes of the people on this island... but not from me I was born and raised in Guam and thus knows really good Vietnamese food! Get your act together! read more

FIVE dried, burnt chicken wings for $9.00, are you kidding me, shame on this restaurant for letting these be put into the take out box, and not 6 as is typical, but FIVE! So angry! Next, my shrimp and vegetable dish had NO Asian vegetables at all, regular mushrooms, cauliflower, carrots and onions and the shrimp was HARD and small and only 6 tiny shrimp, and scant sauce, again, ANGRY! The ham rolls had NO indication or taste of ham???? What's up with that! Needless to say, we will not be revisiting this establishment. I have had the most delectable, delicious and out of this world Vietnamese food over the years and this place needs to really step it up. Maybe the chef on this evening was new, but I really feel like calling them up and complaining. $67.00 right down the toilet!!! read more

Hidden gem on the island! Wide variety of Vietnamese food to choose from at affordable prices too. I've dined here several times already (both to-go and sit down) and have tried many different dishes they offer but my favorite by far is their vermicelli. Very filling and full of flavor. Solid restaurant for Vietnamese food! I need to go back and try other stuff from the menu but I recently had lunch here on a rare chilly and raining summer afternoon and it was perfect. It's your un of the mill strip mall restaurant as far as aesthetics go but food is too notch. My girlfriend and I split s pork Bahn mi before our Pho bowls came out and man o man. Pork Bahn mi has to be the most perfect sandwich. Then our bowls came out and I immediately tried the soup before doing anything else and it was amazing. Amazingly flavorful broth I just added a bit of hoisin and garlic chili paste out of habit. It came with the normal bean sprouts and Thai basil. I love the crunch the bean sprouts give. I don't live on the island but it's close enough where I don't mind the drive. I'll be back for sure for some more Bahn mi! read more

I am a Newporter who loves Vietnamese food. I have eaten Pho, particularly, from Saigon to NYC and onward. I love the stuff. So, when I found out Newport had this lil gem, I was happy to give it a go. I ordered the Pho (B1) and my companion ordered a beefless option (G8), we started with the spring rolls. All of our choices were terrific. The broth in the pho was not weak (as I have experienced in other vietnamese restaurant), and the meat was sliced/cooked to perfection. Noodles were also cooked perfectly and as slippery as they should have been. The broth was seasoned plentifully, and the only thing I needed to add was Saracha - the vietnamese hot sauce staple - which is an option in Pho (as it isn't meant to be spicy dish). In my companions bowl - the veggies were perfectly crisp, not over cooked. The seasoning was a mystery however, quite pleasing. And the tofu seemed fresh and as adequate as tofu can be floating in a bowl of deliciously seasoned chicken broth. The hot tea warmed us up on a cold winter's night and the only thing that stopped us from ordering the Vietnamese coffee was the late hour. Our waitress was very attentive and efficient. I recommend this place highly...the food is great and the service is hospitable. The decor is nothing radical but the dinning room is very neat and clean. For the price and all other factors...i won't complain and do plan on visiting again soon. read more

Soild place to get pho in Rhode Island, but I think what got me was that I didn't seem to get enough noodles in my pho dish. I think I made the mistake of ordering a small bowl and not a large. Either way you really can't go wrong on a rainy cold day than to get a bowl of "noodle soup". I think what really hit the spot for me was that I also wasn't feeling well and how best to take care of cold than with some pho! The soup tasted pretty good and hit the spot. I had the rare steak, which tasted good, but I think I could have went for the well done steak instead. Service was great and we got our food very quickly! read more

Just visited this wonderful restaurant for the first time last night, but we will definitely return. We ordered two appetizers, ham rolls and shrimp cakes. The ham rolls were wrapped in a delicate yet firm rice paper (not rubbery at all), and bursting with Vietnamese "ham" (really a smoked pork preparation) and crispy fresh veggies and basil leaves. The shrimp cakes were a revelation, clinging to sugar cane "handles", and with a complex flavor that blends sweet and earthy components (thanks to a bit of mam tep in the mix, I'm guessing). I had the bun (rice noodles) with marinated shrimp, pork and egg rolls. This was a sensible portion that might have benefited from a few more shrimp, but the flavor and freshness of the ingredients was beyond reproach. My companion had the basil fried rice with chicken... she asked for the spiciness to be toned down, and I feel the dish suffered for this. I'll order it myself next time and have them go full throttle with the chilis! The people running the restaurant were very efficient and cheerful. We called our order in and took it home, so the only thing we missed out on was the "atmosphere." And frankly, that wasn't missing much. The interior is plain and mostly undecorated, but it's new and scrupulously clean. If you've never tried Vietnamese food, Sunrise is a great introduction (just make sure you're not ordering one of the mainstream Chinese dishes they also offer, such as Szechwan shrimp or sesame chicken... these seem to be confined on the menu to the category "Chef's Special Stir-Fry"). Yeah, I love this place, man! This used to be Saigon Cafe and the interior is almost identical to what it was when it was Saigon, but I dig the place much more now, and I go much more often. I mean, Saigon Cafe was fine and all, but I never really gave enough of a fuck about it to write a review. But yeah, the lunch specials are a decent deal, bubba! A cup of soul and a lunch special for like $6-something. I usually get the tofu with spicy vegetables or with lemongrass or whatever the hell. And the veggies always seem to be really fresh and cooked perfectly. And these motherfuckers actually cook tofu well, too, for whatever that's worth to you. But yeah, the service always seems to be good, too. I will say I miss the WTF-MIDI selections that Saigon Cafe used to play, shit like the Godfather theme and random-ass showtunes. However, I'm pretty sure that random upright piano is still in there for whatever the fuck reason. Do beware, they are closed on Wednesdays because why the fuck not, right!?! I stopped in on a whim while experiencing a craving for pho. The place was slow, and I was immediately seated by a very nice waitress. I asked for water and perused the menu. The water had small chunks of food floating in it, which I was willing to overlook to enjoy my meal. I order my standard thin slices beef and tendon in a regular sized bowl of pho. I was brought over some of the customary add ons, but no jalapeños. When my Soup came I was initially pleased by the good size and amount of meat and tendon present. However, that quickly faded. The tendon was hardly reconstituted and gamey tasting. If you didn't know before, tendon in Asian cooking is generally bought dried and requires several hours of boiling to tenderize it and remove the nasty taste. It was very clear that they don't do that here, and it was so off putting that I had to remove all of it before eating my soup. The soup itself was fine- in the fact that it was edible and hot. Would I come back? No. The broth had little flavor and lacked the lip-smacking collagen present in traditional pho broths. In all, I would say the food was edible, but not an accurate reflection of the wonderful broths present in other pho in RI. read more

We love Vietnamese "pho" and went here on a chilly November night. They have a chicken noodle soup that they claim is not a true pho, but I ordered it and it was fantastic. Hubby got the beef version and we shared some "fresh rolls" (I think that's what they're called). I didn't think the rolls were quite as good as I've had elsewhere, but they were decent. The woman who waited on us was lovely, and service was pretty fast. We'll definitely go back next time we're in town. read more

I've recently got hooked on visiting Sunrise Resteraunt, whenever I need to please my asian food cravings - after all there really isn't a whole lot of good asian restaurants in Newport/Middletown. I really like it at Sunrise, the girl who works the counter is extremely pleasant, and the resteraunt reminds me of some of the places I've wandered into while in New York City. So what's not to like about it? So far I've only had the chance to try the lunch special (k6), and the spring rolls, and both were very good -- Well the Spring rolls were OK, but I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to those, as I tend to make them myself. I'm hoping to go next week and try some of the Pho. read more

My hubby and I wanted a quick place for lunch and I had received a 10% off coupon in the mail for this place earlier in the week, so we decided on Vietnamese. We went at about 1:30 on a weekday and it was slow which was nice because we had our 7 month old nephew with us. The staff was really friendly and we didn't feel like we were disturbing anyone with the baby (which is always nice!). I had the beef brisket pho which was really good and my hubby had the claypot, which was even better. We had spring rolls to start and they had the typical peanut sauce for dipping. I've been meaning to get to Sunrise for several months, since a friend had sent me a link to their page and asked if I wanted to go. This is my second pho restaurant, so I'm no expert, but this place was a bit better than the one I tried in California. We started off with summer rolls (goi cuon, or nim chow to most Rhode Islanders). They were pretty tasty and had a nice mix of sprouts, rice noodle and basil with a slice of beef inside, which was a slightly different twist than I usually have in this dish. The sauce was the thicker peanut sauce like you get in most LA restaurants with goi cuon. I still prefer the clear rice vinegar based sauce that many RI restaurants serve with nim chow, but this was a bit thinner than the peanut sauces I've had and was a nice compliment to the rolls. I ordered the large pho with thin sliced steak. The broth was okay, but I did end up adding sriracha to spice it up. They brought a plate of sprouts and basil with a lime to add to the bowl. The sprouts were crisp, plump and fresh and the basil was also very fresh and plentiful. I would have liked a few jalapeno slices and more cilantro, which they had already added to my bowl - but I didn't ask, so no points off for something they probably would have given me. There were plenty of noodles and the meat was very good - much better than my other pho experience. We finished off splitting an order of lychee. They were served in a large glass with ice cubes and a spoon. I've never seen lychee served this way - but they were very refreshing after the hot soup. We arrived in what I would call the latter end of the lunch shift, so there was just a single waiter working. He was both friendly and attentive and happily answered all of our questions with a smile. I still want to try more pho restaurants as I do enjoy this dish and this sure is the time of year for soup in the northeast. read more

I visit here whenever I'm on the island. For a long time, the papaya salad with tofu blew me away and I had it every time. It's gone, but there's the best tofu bahn mi I've ever had here now, so I'm happy. I'm also big fan of the tofu stir-fried with lemongrass and chili. It's great as a Vermicelli bowl. The summer rolls and sauce could use some work, but they've never been bad. Everyone is friendly, the food comes quick, and the ingredients are fresh. Great food. read more

In the midst of Dunkin Donuts, Dunkin Donuts, and... Ma's Donuts, here you can get an absolutely awesome avocado shake (which seriously rivals even Del's as a summer treat) or a thoughtfully prepared tofu cabbage salad with chopped fresh mint and peanut dressing. That salad is hard to not finish in one sitting, although it is easily a serving for two. It's just that good. Food and drink like this are not found easily in suburbs. The atmosphere (I've only been in for take-out at lunch on weekdays) is quiet, almost hushed. But casual. One man at a table, Some take out. Perfectly nice service. I've got to say... I was not impressed! Neither the service nor the food sparked any interest in me at all! I came here with a few friends and my husband for lunch. The place smelled rather bad to begin with, but I guess that is what you get when all sorts of Vietnamese food is being cooked. The service was very slow. There was one woman waiting on all the tables, and although it was not busy, it seemed like it was too much for her to handle by herself giving the fact that she was moving slower than a snail. One of our friends needed to be back at NAVSTA Newport by 10 of 1 and we didn't leave the restaurant until nearly 12:40. Mind you, we got there at 11:15! And we all ordered a lunch special. My food was bland and I ultimately got sick when I got home. I doubt I will be back. The only thing I found worth praising was there homemade avocado boba. read more
