Choosing a brew house in downtown Issaquah is a relatively simple proposition given the area's limited options. The Issaquah Brewhouse (a Rogue property) has my preferred atmosphere for contemplating the life lessons only available at the bottom of a sudsy pint glass, and the widest beer selection (though understandably focused on Rogue beers). But if you can't subsist on beer alone and insist on taking up valuable space with food, Sunset Alehouse is the clear winner. Owned by the same folks behind Jak's (whose Issaquah location is just across the street), Sunset shines when it is time to dine. Paneled in wood, with pleasantly diffuse lighting, a smattering of TV's for following the game and filling awkward conversational pauses, and with restrooms featuring posters of vintage sex symbols (love the Farrah poster in the men's room), Sunset Alehouse feels like you want a neighborhood bar and grill to feel, but retains enough unique character to be easily distinguished from one of "those" Neighborhood Bar and Grills (inc). The specials menu, unlike at most places of similar aesthetic, is ever-changing, inventive, and generally a solid bet. Standards (burgers, cheese steaks, sandwiches, etc) are well executed, and come with enough intriguing tweaks to keep things interesting. The Carne Asada is surprisingly creditable, as are the unique Asian fusions that make their way onto the menu. Staff is well-informed on the menu, and eager to make recommendations when asked. If you get an unsolicited piece of advice from your server, do yourself a favor and follow it. I've never been disappointed in what has come out. Overall a solid pick for a decent beer selection and a satisfying meal to go along with it. read more

First impressions, decent selection of beers and good apps. The entree was okay, I ordered the chicken fried chicken with jalapeño gravy that came with mashed potatoes and season vegetables. The chicken was more like schnitzel and the seasonal veggies were broccoli and carrots. My biggest gripe was the mashed potatoes, dry and flavorless, no thanks. Make sure to specify to wait until your done with your appetizers to bring your entree. Great ambiance and friendly staff but stick to the appetizers and beer. I'd come back for the loaded tots alone! Oh and the sunset salad was good too! I'm willing to give another shot and hope for a better entree. read more

We went on a Friday Night and the place was buzzing! Sports on all the TV's, couples and friends and families filled the tables. Warm fun atmosphere. We ordered the gumbo and quesadilla with chicken to start. The gumbo was spicy and very good. The quesadilla was filled with chicken and cheese with pico and lettuce on the side. We decided to split the bacon cheese burger and it was really tasty. The Meat was fresh and had a great beefy taste. Lots of bacon and good cheddar cheese, onion, lettuce, pickles and tomato. The fries were big and fluffy inside, crunchy and golden outside. The drinks were well made, long island teas. The beer selections were interesting. Beer prices were good. Selection not so much. When your name has alehouse in it you should have more than 10 beers on tap(4 were big brand beers). Burger was good. We have met up with friends for dinner at Sunset several times over the last few months. The food is consistently great- everyone has been happy with their meals. I've had the carne asada the last two visits- the chimichuri they serve on the side is great. Loud loud loud. Zero ambience unless you're willing to count televisions and noisy patrons. Too many hard surfaces that simply amplify the noise. Underwhelming and overpriced food. Gumbo was the only standout in our meals of soup and caesar salads. Despite the touting of "bold flavors" on the menu, the caeser salads didn't have much flavor or character -- my wife thought they seemed "mayonaisey". I would have preferred a stronger hand with the lemon and anchovy. My kids thought the kids meals were OK (Declan says 'a six') but at $7/ea + $2.50/ea soda it's a bit stiff. Gumbo was pretty good-- possibly worth returning for. It was spicy with chunks of meat and sausage and topped with pickled okra -- But after you add in the two $5 pints, we'd just spent $65 on soup, salad, and two kids meals in a noisy sports bar. My husband and I have gone Keto, so unfortunately, a lot of my favorite things are off my list of things I can eat. But I can dream,,, can't I? One of my favorite dreams involves a Reuben with a side of onion rings, 2 tarter sauce and extra straight up horseradish from the Sunset Alehouse. Then there is the Sunset Burger, the fish and chips, the pretzel with homemade cheese dipping sauce, all I can say about these tasty items is 'Nom nom nom nom!' This morning I made the mistake of going to the Sunset web sight and I looked at the specials for October. My mom is German so the thought of speatzel and schnitzel with mushroom gravy was almost more than I can bear. I was literally starting to drool as I read the menu. Their specials are always amazing!! I. LOVE. SUNSET. Best staff ever. Is their food out of this world? Well, it's pretty darn good, but no. It's a pub. I don't come here for fine dining though. HOWEVER... the way they treat to THIS regular (I live down the street)... I'll keep coming back till I'm 97. Seriously; a great group of people. My only wish is that they'd become more like one of their other establishments, the El 42 Cantina, and just be a 21 and over joint. The crying babies and kids can get obnoxious, but still. Stumbled on this place on our way back from a hike and we were starving so decided to check it out. We were seated quite quickly and they have outdoor seating as well. I ordered the carne asada, which is a basically a make your own taco plate. It comes with rice, steak, beans, onions and tomatoes. It kind of annoyed me That they didn't ask my presence on how I like my steak cooked. It came pink and I hate pink steak. Overall it was not all that good, pretty bland. My brother got the boneless buffalo wings and my friend got the bone in buffalo wings. Both of them agreed that the boneless were much better. We were aiming for Jak's but it was closed for renovations so decided to try Sunset Grill. Rather disappointing overall. We were there for happy hour - the burgers were smaller than Jak's and just didn't satisfy the same way. I had a creme brulee for dessert - and it was not good at all - grainy, runny on the bottom, cold most of the way through except where some warmth came thru from the carmelizing of the sugar on top. When I splurge on dessert I really want something delightful and this was not it. We had some other items off the happy hour menu but it's been a few weeks since we were there and can't remember what they were - only that it wasn't memorable at all. Ken, Thanks -- that's more reasonable for the soda. But, for a place like the Alehouse I just don't see a split charge. This isn't a fine restaurant where people are expected to get dinners. We could have gone in just for two glasses of soda for $2, or a couple of beers. Or I could have bought a beer and my friend just have tap water. A split charge in a restaurant isn't for the great amount of work you have to do, it's because you're losing revenue from a seat. I've been here more then a handful of times as far back as maybe the second day they were opened, and as recent as last week. I am a little sad that as they have become more popular it has definitely gotten a lot louder in there, but it is worth it to me because I like this restaurant so much. Their drink selection is kind of small - but all the wine that I have had there is both extremely yummy and in a very generous glass. My boyfriend is disapointed with the beer selection, but is usually able to find something he ends up really enjoying from their choice of one to three special or seasonal beers. The food is amazing! I am a little disappointed with their vegetarian selection (maybe one, two dishes at most) but I am not a vegetarian so it only bothers some of my friends who get dragged along. If you love spice try the three chili silly - I go with some boys who love love love spicy things and they get this almost every time, and even prefer it over the deuce burger. The Italian Chicken sandwich is also good, but my go to is the "Keeping It Real" Burrito, wet, with chicken. YUM! So good. It is huge, so I ususally eat half of it and then take it home for lunch the next day. More recently they have also added specials, like Jak's steaks, I haven't tried the steaks yet but I've tried a couple other specials and they have all been really good. I also like the addition of more fish items on their menu and pasta. Overall, this is just my go to place when I am looking for something to eat. The food is always good, the drinks are always good, service is great, they have TONS of TVs for the guys, and I can sacrifice it being a little loud for all that. read more

Jak's is superior in every way, from food to price to service, and directly across the street, so SA needs to pull their head out. I travel ALOT and feel like I specialize in finding brew pubs via Yelp. I am absolutely astonished with this find! Amazing staff, not just Tracy, but everyone else that said hi or made small talk. Clean, FUN atmosphere with good ole 80-90's playing and sports on the TV. Sat at the bar and met several really friendly people which is also a rarity! I stayed in Issaquah because rooms were booked up in Bellevue. In the future, I can say I will make the extra trip to stay here and visit the Sunset Alehouse again!! Keep it up and thanks for the hospitality!! Food-wise: Chicken fried chicken w/ mashers and jalapeño gravy ROCKS! Highly recommend! The Black Raven brown is delicious as well!! Updated review- After my initial impressions over the years the service has lapsed. I find that the servers are generally more interested in their people and each other more than anyone else, especially the guy that works behind the bar most evenings. First time I've been in this bar/eating establishment. I sat down at the bar, and right away the friendly server asked me what I'd like to drink and offered a menu. I decided on a half spicy buffalo salad. It was delicious, and for a "half" order it was also large! The IPA I had was very good as well. They offer several craft brews. Like some others, I don't understand some of the mediocre reviews. So, here goes. Great selection of beers, the hummus plate is the best I've ever had, amazing tuna melt, the shrimp tacos are better than you'll find at any mexican restaurant in the area. This is my favorite place in Issaquah. The vibe is chill and the people are awesome. My favorite sandwich on the regular menu is the Santa Fe Chicken. A little spicy, delicious. If you get a salad, go with the bleu cheese dressing- best in town. My favorite in the specials menu (only available sometimes) is the Bahn Mi sandwich. Incredible! I stumbled across this place after finishing up a hike near North Bend. They offer a dozen or so draft beers from the local area with a few main beers. Additionally they offer cider and gluten free beer by the can. The burgers were tasty and served quickly even though we stopped by on a Saturday afternoon. This is a great place for a beer and pub grub no matter which direction you are headed on the I90. read more

They have good local beers on tap and good rotating guest beers too... have gone here a few times after work and even though I have gone 1 to 1.5 hours before close the servers have always been extremely nice and took good care of us. Kudos to the staff. I have tried their tots, wings, nachos for apps and their sunset burger here. Everything tasted great and you can tell they use good ingredients for their food. Classic bar food done extremely well. The bold Caesar was a nice take on a classic with a bit of spice. I eat Caesar salad (as well as a Reuben) pretty much anywhere I go. I would def eat this salad again. We had Reuben (obvs) and the cheesesteak. Both sandwiches had good meat, veggie, cheese to bread ratio. The meats were tender and flavorful on both sandwiches. I assumed this was going to be standard mediocre bar food but was pleasantly surprised and satisfied. The staff was really friendly and willing to take a moment to chat/answer questions. 10 hours on the road to pick up my son from EWU, saving room for a good dinner, we planned to go to Jak's, as we've done in the past. Knowing it doesn't take reservations, we were hoping the wait would not be that long. It was an hour and fifteen minutes. After deciding to go to the Sunset Alehouse, my impatient self wished I had waited the hour and fifteen minutes. (And I take the blame for us not waiting at Jak's!) At Sunset Alehouse we were all pretty confident it would be as good as Jak's. It wasn't. I don't think they are sure the direction they want to go with the restaurant theme. Alehouse or sportsbar (a lot of TV's). Is it Tex-Mex, Asian, Italian, Southern...? There are way too many items on the menu that don't really blend well. My son and beau, started with the Gumbo. They said it was good, not great. I tasted it, and it lacked a really nice roux. It tasted more like a chicken soup with gumbo fixings thrown in. It was also way too spicy! I can stand a little spice and my son loves spicy food, but he said, he needed to stop eating it or otherwise risk heartburn. My main course (and my beau's) was the Gyro. It was pretty bad. I kept wondering, did they accidentally give me lamb, because the meat really was unidentifiable. My son had Prawns with Angel Hair, and from what I could see, it lacked the creaminess you'd expect from a pasta with white sauce. He said it was ok. This kid has been eating dorm food and was not impressed with this meal! He too had his heart set on a steak from Jak's. Sorry, kid. I'm certain I won't go here again. There are way too many other places to choose from in that area, and I learned my lesson, a good meal takes patience, and the next time I go to Jak's I'm staying for as long as it takes to get that good meal. read more

Issaquah has too few good restaurants, and I think this place is a success primarily for our lack of better "casual" options and it's association with Jaks. It is otherwise average, and while their beer selection is decent it is as good as you'd expect from any other PNW restaurant (Mac & Jacks, etc.) There are a ton ofTVs for watching whatever games are on. Only a very small portion of the already-small restaurant is adults-only, and unfortunately that means that even at 9pm on a Friday night you're likely to feel you are more at a neighborhood family restaurant (kids tossing food and toys on the ground, etc) than a respectable ale house. The association with Jaks means if you order anything with steak it will be a solid choice. Their specials menu can have pleasant surprises, but it's bar food that is solidly normal - nachos, turkey melt, steak sandwich - rather than aspiring for greatness. The staff is friendly, gossipy if they know someone, and seem quite young. Twice while waiting for a table they've mistakenly given our table to someone else, which is frankly enough to make me not want to go back. I don't mind a 20min wait, except when they've turned it into 40 (offering a table in a section to the people behind us they'd not offered to us, etc.) More experience or better training would probably help. read more

By far the best burger in Issaquah. I have been searching for the best burger in Issaquah since I moved out here and I have to say that nothing beats the Sunset Ale House Burger. I have tried a few other things on the menu but every time I go there I can't seem to try any thing new. It's always the sunset burger with Cheddar cheese. read more

Got a XMas gift card for Sunset Alehouse/Jak's. Decided to try out the alehouse after skiing with my wife and son. We were huunnnngry. Waitress took our order, after 45 minutes when our food didn't arrive, we asked. She said she just checked on it and that the ticket was lost. They were making it double time... She returned with free nachos to tie us over and at bill time, bought my beer and my son's soda. Mistakes happen, she made it right. Food was tasty. Would come back again! read more
