Tried this place after a walk on the beach and can honestly say these are the worst tacos I've tried in SF. To start off, the tortillas were cold and the meat was barely warm. The menu said the tortillas are hand made, however, the tortillas were not made to order. As someone that has grown up in the restaurant business, claiming tortillas for tacos are hand made, gives the impression they are made to order and these seemed to be reheated. The carnitas were dry, and the best thing was the escabeche. The Al pastor lacked flavor and was also dry. Real Al pastor is slow cooked specifically to maintain its flavor. This place is a gem! I've been here for several weeknight dinners and it's a great casual spot in the neighborhood. Service is always friendly and we never have to wait very long to get seated. They're open daily and close at 10 or 11 pm depending on the day of the week, which is nice since many restaurants in the Sunset don't stay open past 8 or 9 pm. We visited on a Monday evening for dinner and ordered crispy carnitas tacos (3 per order), one street dog served with steak fries, quesabirria (2 per order), and one horchata. The carnitas tacos were juicy and flavorful, and there was a nice balance of sharp raw onions and tangy pickled onions. The tacos were a little on the small side as I could finish one in two bites. Plus, there could've been more guacamole. The street dog was massive; the bacon wrapped hot dog was meaty, and the toppings were very generous. The accompanying steak fries were pretty standard. The quesabirria was deliciously meaty and cheesy and the tortilla was nice and crisp; 1-2 tacos per person is all you need since it's very rich and heavy. The consommé for dipping was good with a nice consistency (not too thin). Service was friendly and dishes came out in a timely, staggered manner. What a little gem for Mexican food! I ordered the quesabirria tacos and they came with generous chunks of stewed beef. I also added mushrooms and they were just delicious. The tortilla also was very crispy and tasted homemade. My boyfriend ordered the carnitas flaunts. Finally able to try this place after walking past it so many times since they opened a year ago (maybe more?). Came to meet with a friend and there were plenty of seats indoors but if it's a good day, you can also sit outside. But slight warning, you'll have to deal with the noise from the N Judah and also the brisk winds. Service was really quick. We got seated right when we arrived and our orders came in about 10 minutes from ordering. We ordered the Chef Juans Ceviche that came with taro chips and I ordered the Quesabirria for my entree. The ceviche was delicious. I'm not sure if I enjoy the taro chips (something about the texture) but the ceviche itself was flavorful and it wasn't too spicy. The Quesabirria was a hefty meal. The shell was crispy and the filling was tender and retained its moisture in the cooking process. Would definitely come back with a larger group to try some of their other options. read more

Really really not what it used to be. This is my fourth time here in four years, and I can't remember the last time my opinion of a restaurant changed this drastically. Their food menu has dramatically reduced and I couldn't tell if you could even get a burrito after 4 pm. I ordered their 'birria ramen' which replaced what I considered the best thing on their menu bya country mile- the posole. Theoretically it sounds great, but it's execution is very poor for a 19$ dish! The consume is mushroom based and does not have the depth, spice or warmth of one. Shouldn't even be called consume. The dish is also 75% noodles and they don't even give you a big speed for it. My egg was pretty much hard boiled and the amount of beef for the noodles they serve is absolutely paltry. The coke I ordered was $5 and was, generously, half a can in a cup full of ice. Rip off. The guac was substandard, though the tortilla chips were the highlight of the meal. If you haven't been here in a couple of months, or even a year, honestly just skip it and go to tres dogs a couple more blocks west. House margarita for 12$ was also barely passable. You can look at my previous reviews and see that I'm detailed about what I like or don't like. This isn't the loud ramblings of a hater, I'm not that well off. Won't be going here again. Bring back the poodle and don't take it off, would be my only advice to this once great establishment. read more

The carne asada taco was my favorite, while my husband liked the crispy picadillo as it reminded him of having Taco Bell tacos while he was a child. Great little neighborhood spot in the outer sunset. I brought my parents here on a Tue for lunch. We found street parking less than a block away. Sunset Cantina has both indoor tables, bar seating, as well as a fair # of outdoor tables within a parklet -- no shade, tho typically not an issue in the sunset as it rarely gets too hot. Even on this first day of the current heat wave, it's still nice & slightly cool here. Via a happy coincidence, we realized after we ordered that it's Taco Tuesday, which means $2 off per taco plate. The meat is flavorful and portions are decent. Coming in a close second is the al pastor tacos which does have pieces of pineapple that a lot of al pastor places leave out. The carnitas really good too with some crunch in the meat! I have also tried their brunch and got the al pastor hash. Honestly...I found this a little underwhelming. I loved the pineapple pieces but the meat and overall flavor profile felt lacking. Maybe because the meat was in bigger chunks? It also lacked spice! Service is usually pretty good - attentive. HH pork taco, once again overflowing with pork, pretty yummy. I did ask about the Flautas, was told it was "2 cut in half". Most Flautas everywhere else are small, so I thought, sure, I can manage that. When they arrived I was blown away by the "heft" of each half. They were HUGE. Super stuffed and hot. But not crispy, which was a bit disappointing and though full of goodness a bit underwhelming in flavor. Maybe if the meat had been grilled, I don't know. Only made it through 2 halves and took the rest home. None of this will deter me from returning, but may stick to just the tacos with a side of grilled corn or a salad. The margaritas was delicious, they added salt to the rim and the drink was strong and hit the spot.
