Our office had food catered in from Sunset Grill. I absolutely love the bite size veggies & chicken in the chopped sunset salad. Every bite was fresh tasting along with the sunset vinaigrette was amazing with every bite! Next we had the Hawaiian Skewers w chicken. This dish was grilled to perfection! Red peppers, purple onion, chicken, pineapple, potatoes with an Asian marinate. The key lime pie was luscious in a graham cracker crust with whipped cream on top... I could eat the whole pie! Really wonderful service and ambience. I had shrimp tacos--they were good, and the shrimp was well cooked. As far as my refined senses go, The ingredients were not top notch or the freshest. This is one of my absolute favorite places in Overland Park for many reasons, the main one being their AMAZING breakfast. When I lived out of state but came back to visit, I made sure we would stop at Sunset before heading out on Sunday. The breakfast skillet is always delicious, the breakfast quesadilla is to die for, and the bloody Marys never disappoint. Everything is cooked to perfection every time. 10/10! read more

Nice spot to stop for a late meal on a Friday night. The food here is quite good, and different enough from the area to make it feel more like you are changing things up a bit. Affordable. Good service. Atmosphere like a Ft Lauderdale tourist trap. :-) They have a live band on Friday nights, and the bar side was fairly packed. We sat on the restaurant side, and could hear just fine. We could also hear the normal cover music piping through the overhead speakers. It was a tad bit distracting. So... I asked them to please turn off that cover music so we could better hear that fellow pulling together decent covers of old classics. Our server assured us that leaving the cover music on was a mistake, and left to take care of it... and nothing changed. We ate through our great meal prepared exactly as we'd asked, high maintenance changes and all; boxed up our leftovers; paid the bill; and all while live and recorded music of different styles competed for attention around us. I'm sad to have to give Sunset Grill one star, without even getting to try their food. My mom's birthday was yesterday, and she wanted to have dinner somewhere that we could sit on a patio. Since we had a large group (6 adults and a baby), we wanted to make sure we could find a place where we could make reservations on the patio. We called a few places late yesterday morning, and found that Sunset Grill was one of the few places that you could make reservations for their patio. We made reservations on the patio at 5:15 P.M., and got there shortly before. As soon as we pulled up to the restaurant, we could tell that the patio was completely full. It was clear when we walked in and told the hostess that we had reservations on the patio at 5:15 for 7 that they had messed up. While they had our name on their reservation list, it apparently wasn't noted that we'd specifically asked for outdoor seating. It hadn't been a simple miscommunication on the phone - we had been extremely clear that we only wanted to make reservations if we could make them for the patio, which they said we absolutely could. After some hushed talking amongst some of the employees, they eventually informed us that they did not have an outdoor reservation for us, and that it would be 45 minutes before we could be seated outdoors. Since we had other plans for the rest of the night, we did not stay. Since it was a Saturday night, at this point it was now too late to find immediate outdoor practically anywhere. We were extremely disappointed since we had specifically chosen Sunset Grill because we were able to make the patio reservations. Now, our whole night looked different because of their mishap. Luckily, Mi Ranchito nearby was able to seat us outside pretty quickly, but we had been looking forward to trying a new place in Sunset Grill. Unfortunately, we will not be returning. read more

Brought my wife for a nice evening dinner out. Disappointed that the band cancelled, but such is luck. Ordered the 14oz Ribeye and was blown away! Perfectly seasoned and cooked. I've had dinner her for 10 years and never ordered it, but now I'm hooked. I split it with my wife, who also ordered a half salad. Plenty for both us. Appetizer was the Texas Shrimp. My wife and my daughter were there the other night for dinner. Sat outside on the patio because of concern for covid 19. The have a sign stating mask usage. However on the patio there were three large groups having a good time. There were a group of ladies who should have known better. When one of their group would arrive hugs all around. Sitting at a table of small tables put together no real distance between them and not a mask on any of them. I guess looks may be more important. This was my first and last visit to this place. Ate here for the first time tonight Friday at 7:15pm. Was greeted and sat down immediately...and our server Kailani was amazing. Very friendly, and served us immediately. Food was good, service was great. I will be back simply because these people care about customer service! I'm going to get the sourdough Frisco burger next time! My wife loved the Parmesan pasta and I ate all of the artichoke and jalapeño dip. I'm so glad we stumbled into this little gem. read more

This is way out of my neck of the woods but trekked down here to meet a friend for lunch. I was so pleasantly surprised. The staff were all very friendly. The food was great. I got a half salad and half sandwich. The salad was huge. I got a southwest salad and turkey melt. They were both delicious. My friend ordered the chopped salad and told me she wanted me to taste hers so the waitress brought me my own little side of that too. It was sooo yummy. I don't know if I'll make the long trek out there to eat but if I'm in the area (or even close) I'll make a point of going back! read more

This place is just all right. Bland, uninspired food. See my picture of the biscuit (singular) and gravy. This was the "Biscuits, Gravy and More" off the Sunday breakfast menu: one wimpy biscuit, meatless gravy, bland fried potatoes (no onion, no peppers, no seasoning). All served nice and lukewarm. Had the parmesan chicken stir fry for lunch another time. While the flavors were decent, it was mostly a bowl of wild rice with a couple bites of chicken thrown in. My parents and I dined on the patio just recently and had an overall pleasant experience. We had all had experience eating at Gambucci's several years ago before it closed and enjoyed their chopped salad. Apparently, management from that restaurant is currently managing this restaurant so I very excited to get a taste of it again. Our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. When I told him I had a gluten allergy, he recommended the chopped salad and the black bean soup. Food came out quickly, and portions were large. The chopped salad was perfect, crisp and fresh. The tastes of the sweet and salty were wonderfully balanced. The black bean soup had a dollop of.. I think pineapple in the middle. It was thick and hearty. First time here-with a toddler we have to do carry-out more often than not. There was a coconut shrimp craving in the family today-so a friend recommended Sunset. When I opened up my box of Beachfire Chicken Nachos which were $9+ I was super bummed to find a large plate of chips with not much else. I even moved it to a plate thinking the good stuff had settled to the bottom-nope... Just more chicken sprinkles and chips. I posted the coconut shrimp pics as well. Yes!!! We would go over and over! The happy hour options are great. I would highly recommend the jalapeño and artichoke dip which is on the happy hour appetizer specials. This review is for the bar section only, not the restaurant. Met a friend here on Friday night around 9:30 PM. He told me Sunset Grill is his favorite drinking spot and that he'll usually spend all afternoon/evening here. I can definitely see why: They checked my ID at the beginning but didn't take my card or make me pay after each drink. It's like they trusted me or something. By recommendation of a regular, my drink of the night was something called "Brass Balls." It had peach, and pineapple, and I really don't know what else... 1st drink: Amazing. 2nd drink: Still so so good . {vodka soaked pineapple} 1 sip of my 3rd drink: and whoa, the room is spinning. {cup of some sort of chocolaty thing} A couple waters later and I still can't shake the dizziness. Darn those Brass Balls. Our bartenders were ridiculously great. The second my glass was empty, they were handing me another one. Each time some high-maintenance girl ordered some over- the- top frozen drink, our bartender would bring my group the extra from the blender. That's what I do as a barista, and that's what set this place far higher than the others. I visited the bathroom at least 5 times that night and it was CLEAN. Very clean and very cute with quotes and flowers on the walls. I was scared of what my tab would be at the end. All of the before-mentioned came out to $17.25. 5 something each for my drinks and the pineapple and chocolate sample were on the house. I approve. Oh, and to make things even more perfect, the band played oldies songs all night. I don't remember the names, but I remember knowing most of them. One of the songs was "Sweet Caroline." Strong drinks. Generous bartenders. Oldies songs in a bar. My new favorite place to drink. read more

$18 shrimp fajitas came with 6 small shrimp. Fish & Chips the cod was extremely over cooked - appeared to be in the fryer for 2x as long as it needed to be. Shrimp pasta left a lot to be desired, overall the best thing we ordered was the baked potato soup and a side salad. I'd stick to the burgers / sandwiches which to be fair looked good but limited options for a Friday during Lent left us ordering items you should probably avoid. read more

Smoked Turkey Melt was pretty tasty. The Charros beans are a nice alternative for a side. Strong and delicious drinks (sunset margarita - yum), but they don't have any specials that are worth mentioning. Waitress was nice. Plenty of parking. This is a pretty decent place for a casual lunch or dinner. I hadn't been here in years due to it being so unbelievably mediocre. But, I was invited here with friends and they managed to improve my opinion. I'm not sure if they came under new management or just decided improvements were in order but the menu looked quite different and the food was WAY better. I had some chips and salsa which was good (granted that's pretty darn hard to screw up). Then I had the veggie burger and sweet potato fries. I'm a bit of a sweet potato fry connoisseur and these didn't disappoint. They definitely weren't the best I've ever had but for a decent restaurant they are a lot better than most places. Our service was also great. I'm glad this place has gotten so much better and I've got another restaurant to keep in mind in this area. read more

The one start is for getting seated immediately. If your a minority and on a time crunch I wouldn't go here. We sat there for 15/20 mins just for waiters to keep looking at us walking past us and taking everyone's order except ours. We didn't even get asked what we wanted to drink. We've been coming here for years and have introduced many of our friends to the restaurant. Recently I took a friend from Lincoln, and raved about their salads. My friend had a Paradise Salad and really enjoyed it. I had the Fried Chicken Salad and it was horrible. The chicken tenders were all breading, overcooked and cold. They have the best salads in Johnson County! The San Diego and sunset salads are my favorite. The homemade dressings is what really makes them special. I would love to have a better review of the place - meaning, I wish I had tried more. I can honestly only review off the to-go service, and that Sunset Chopped Salad. So, as far as to-go, I call, they have it ready at the bar, staff has always been kind, place is clean and tidy (and usually packed, so good business!) - but that salad. I learned about this salad when a coworker brought it in on a pot luck/food day. This salad, might be one of the best out there. A mix of so many things, chicken, tomato, gorgonzola/blue cheese (?), onion.. so much more. The dressing is light and tasty. I've been here previously and had excellent food, but it has been at least 6 months since my last visit. Tonight, was definitely a sub-par experience. The chopped salad (which used to be amazing) was lacking and no toasted bread accompanied the salad which used to be included. What really stood out was the poor service. I have never seen so many younger kids, wearing Sunset Grill shirts, standing around and doing absolutely nothing accept talking (including curse words) and goofing off. My server was SLOW and didn't check in anything until I asked for the check. They were not really crowded except for bar area. Don't know that I will return. read more

If you've ever wondered how to screw up the traditional egg/potato/meat breakfast, eat here. The food was cooked poorly and tasted awful, the ingredients obviously cheap, and every visible employee was high school aged (immature, inexperienced, and uncaring). I'd say it was a one-off experience, but everything about this place shouted, "This is the norm!" Everything seemed like cheap, frozen, processed slop cooked by an army of underpaid high schoolers who are working here as punishment.
