We visited the Sunset Grille on our first Keys vacation, on my parents' recommendation. Atmosphere: Typical Keys "tiki bar". We came on a Saturday at dinnertime, which meant every one of the gazillion TVs was tuned to college football. Which was fine, and the crowd was pretty vocal and clearly enjoyed watching the games. We came on purpose to see the sunset. This partly worked out -- our table was "inside" -- I use quotation marks because it's not really inside; it's just under the thatched roof instead of downstairs in the open. There was a wait for a table downstairs, so we opted for "inside". Our table's sunset view was blocked by a gigantic outdoor TV screen set up downstairs. We could have asked to be moved, but we were hungry and tired and didn't bother. When the big moment arrived, my husband and kids went over to the railing and got some pictures, so that was all right. The drinks are expensive. Maybe if you're from NY or DC, they're not, but I'm from Baltimore and I thought $10 for a mixed drink was a bit much. Good, flavorful drinks, but a little high. The food, though? Wow. I had the Shipwreck Grouper, which was FANTASTIC. That fish tasted like it swam up to the dock, got caught, brought inside, and cooked within minutes. The key lime/banana sauce was tangy, not too sweet, and there wasn't too much of it either. My husband had sushi, which he said was among the best he's ever had, and some conch chowder (loved that too). For its relaxed atmosphere, excellent food, and friendly staff, we'll definitely come back and recommend it to others. read more

I went to this Restuarant on July 13th, 2015 and was there for a total time of 7 hrs. I have never witnessed such a negative staff, poorly cooked food, poor presentation and taste. In addition, the bartender and bar staff were rude,condescending and not informed of what alcohols they served nor were they aware of what we're in their drinks. We had a party of 6. Because of the above mentioned...this venue lost a huge amount of revenue... And not only only from our table, but from other tables as well. The food quality is not worth paying for The inconsiderate staff and their negative comments towards their customers were astonishing to hear. The only thing that this place has for it ....is their swimming pool which was exhilarating and the guitarist/artist. Other than that....I would stay away unless you need a quick dip read more

Great ambiance and lots of different areas to hang out in. Not too crowded, even with a lot of people. The staff were all super friendly (despite having to deal with a lot of a-holes. I heard other tables. Some people are just terrible humans...) Chris was top notch. Great customer service and super friendly. The live music was also great. Dude was mad talented. The food is fine. Not winning any Michelin stars, but it does its job, and the seafood is fresh. Drinks were strong. Sushi was delicious and salad. My husband got the special of the day and liked that as well. Good service and view was nice.

We ate here twice, once for lunch and two days later for breakfast . Lunch service was poor, the food marginal. I had the mahi BLT and my hubby had the grouper sandwich. Both sandwiches were served slightly soggy on the bottom which tells me for food was sitting in the kitchen. Two days later we stopped for breakfast , hoping our poor experience was just a fluke, however we soon found out it is the norm here. Again it took nearly 20 minutes before a waitress appeared. The pancakes were terrible, cold and the waitress actually asked " do u want syrup?" Seriously? My breakfast was cold but my hubby's omelet was hot and enjoyable. Obviously the other food sat waiting for the omelet. My advice. Keep driving because the service SUCKS so bad even food food won't have a chance here. This a frequented spot. Usually love it but I took family there and had a wait for a table which is common. I had no problem with that. I wanted to show family the pool and get a drink while we wait. My sister and I waited at the bar for over 30 mins to get a drink at the upstairs bar. The bartender Rave looked at me over 10 times and just kept ignoring us. The locals next to us even commented on it and tried to get her. I finally had to say can I get something when you get a chance and after that she acted busy at the server pick up location still ignoring us. Finally the male bartender came over. We drank those drinks and my brother in law tried the next time and she ignored him for 15 mins until he said something to her. I understand staffing shortages but waiting that long while being seen but she only got the locals drinks 2-3 times in that period is ridiculous. We all are paying customers. read more

Used to love this place but the last 2 times we've gone, we were turned away because they had stopped seating for the night. It was 8:00 on a weeknight! What's up with that??!? Why not just ask us to wait for a table, which we would have happily done, but to just turn people away?? Probably not likely to try again read more

Awesome experience with kids!!! They had a blast swimming while waiting for the food. Made waiting A LOT easier. No asking where the food is. Also, can't beat the views of the ocean and bridge. Plus, my wife approved of the Key Lime Pie. read more

Unfortunately you can't give negative stars. What a disaster the pool was cloudy, service slow, the bar and kitchen understaffed. Ovens broken but we were not told how many items they could not serve until after we had been seated an hour. Clam chowder looked like it came from cat food jar and hog fish Martinique was in edible. Two members of the party left at the 2 hour mark because they were hungry and went elsewhere to get food. Reported the pool to the board of health. read more

I spotted the Sunset Grille out of the corner of my eye on the drive to Key West. I figured that with the outdoor waterfront patio it would be a terrible tourist trap but I decided to check it out on my way back anyways. Being December, and the lowest temperatures on record, the pool & patio were closed but I sat facing out through the plastic sheeting at the water anyways and there was enough of a view to break up my long day of driving. I ordered the lunch special - a local crab & avocado sandwich ($13.99) and was offered extra coleslaw when I said I didn't need the fries. The sandwich was delicious and the coleslaw was good for coleslaw. I thought that the wine was reasonably priced, I had a glass of what I usually buy at the grocery store in California for under $6. Service was very friendly and when I went up to the bar to pay I was offered a plastic cup to take the rest of my soda water with me. The only snag was my sandwich came with tomatoes when I asked for none. I definitely plan to stop in again any time I'm driving through the Keys. read more

Really nice patio right on the water with views of 7-mile bridge, and got to watch a gorgeous sunset. TVs everywhere to keep up with the playoff games. Food was just ok. Even though we saw some great reviews and tried some of the suggested items, nothing we had was fabulous, or even great, or anything we would come back for -- everything was just ok. Unfortunately, although our server was very friendly, she was really slammed and forgot to bring a glass of wine and two side salads ordered as appetizers. Gorgeous, outdoor seating with a sunset view, live music, a pool (bring your swimsuit and towel, just in case!) and tiki bar. This is what every vacation should have. They were able to accommodate our group of 18 at sunset and service, though slow at times, was fun and generally good. Too bad about the uninspiring food. The menu had everything from fried mozzarella sticks to two pages of sushi (mostly with mayonnaise-y sauces decorating them). I skipped that and went straight to the seafoods. The seafood chowders were delicious and creamy, the raw and boiled seafood options were fresh. Some of the other fancier dishes didn't impress. Since we paired the food with a variety of rum drinks and the outdoor setting was awesome, we had a great time. This place is great for groups. read more

Got the wrong check too a long time to fix. We were still going to tip on $47 and change but they never came back to charge our card. If you are a tourist its probably great. There is a nice view and a pool. Seats outside on desk or under the large tiki hut. Drinks are served in fun cups as well. But, the shrimp was frozen and the hog fish sandwich was not hog fish :( Disappointing to not have fresh seafood in the keys and to try to pass off fish as another. As a South Floridian and a frequent traveler to of the keys, this is not a place I would stop again. read more

We waited at least ten minutes before anyone came over and took a drink order. Then, we waited another ten minutes for the drinks. I had the fried hogfish sandwich which was pretty terrible, the bun was hard and the fish was over done. Disappointing food and lovely view. Arrived midafternoon for a late lunch. Had the hogfish sandwich. Could hardly taste the hogfish for the cheese and mushrooms. Too much bread for it all. Fries were tasty, though. Dining companions had chicken grilled salad, and crab cake sandwich. Salad was neither good or fresh although the chicken was ok;, crab cake sandwich was average. We asked at the hotel front desk where to go for the best sunset, and they immediately recommended Sunset Grille & Raw Bar. This restaurant showed up on multiple "must do" lists while I was researching our trip to the Keys, so I was worried it would be a tourist trap, but it actually wasn't bad. It wasn't as busy or as crowded as I was expecting. We were seated at a table outside, right next to the water, which was perfect since our main goal was to watch the sunset. There was some netting and fencing in the way, but it was understandable since the pier is still being rebuilt due to the hurricane damage. We ordered a couple happy hour drinks and conch fritters. The drinks were meh but the conch fritters were pretty good. They were slightly spicy, which surprised us at first but we ended up liking the flavor. The sunset view was gorgeous. While it's not the most romantic spot, due to the kids and the noise, I'm glad we checked it out. It lives up to it's reputation as a great spot to watch the sunset. read more

Food and drinks were good but the service was horrible! We waited for over 40 minutes after being told it would be 15 minutes and then once seated it took over 30 minutes to get our drinks. Non-Food Review: Nestled at the end of Marathon Key just before the 7 Mile Bridge is this grand establishment where plenty of fun in the sun is to be had! Great for visitors and locals; this restaurant and bar offers plenty of seating, a outdoor pool, great food and drink specials daily along with live bands and all around fun for the entire family. It's position on the coast is ideal for gazing upon the colorful sun after a long day as it sets on the horizon and glistens off the water. The staff was friendly and I enjoyed my visit with friends while on vacation. One thing I would caution is that the entrance sneaks up on you so be careful because if you miss it, you wont be able to turn around until after the 7-mile bridge! Cheers! read more

I had some raw oysters to start, which are always great. And that Volcano Snapper is rediculous! A giant portion of snapper topped with a rich creamy topping of crab and scallops. There was a very potent smell when we walked in, like a mix between urine and birdseed.. Not sure if it was the open-air concept or what.. It dissipated after 5 minutes, but didn't give me a great feeling going into the place. Brandi was our server and she was very unfriendly, she never smiled, she looked like this was the last place she wanted to be. On the menu, it said the Cubano was the best in the Keys and when I asked Brandi about it she simply said "yea, its okay." Wow, that's how you sell the best Cubano in the Keys?!? At any rate, I ordered the Cubano and my wife ordered the crabcake sandwich. The food came out, it was nothing special. The cubano was alright, but I've definitely had better. My wife said the crabcake sandwich was okay, didn't have much flavor to it and the chipotle mayo that came on the side tasted like thousand island dressing.. Yuck! As we were walking out, Brandi was standing at the host stand talking to the host. She didn't even acknowledge us as we walked out, literally we were a foot away from her, not even a thanks for coming, or have a good day.. The concept of the restaurant is great, open air with a view of the water and bridge and their own pool for pool parties.. I'm guessing this place is better if you're buzzed up and looking to party but i would not waste your time if you're looking for good food or service.. read more

Great location, beautiful view, great pool and amenities at sunset grille. The staff was decent but the food for our table wasn't very good. We ordered the conch chowder and it gave everyone heart burn to start. It's a very heavy and spicy broth. The taste was just ok. We all ordered seafood. Catch of the day , the grouper and a couple of lobsters. All 4 of us were disappointed and 1 of us were unable to eat it all. The grouper was horrendously over spicy and when we told the waitress she said oh I am so sorry and walked away and delivered the check. Need to offer a replacement or something because we had to go somewhere else so he could get something to eat since his was not edible. Only reason they get two stars is the location and the bar is awesome. They have a very fun area with corn hole and a swimming pool. I would only go there to drink in the future. We had got on the the wait list for a table at approximately 7:00 we did not get sat till 8:30 and the table service was awful. This is a good place to really soak in the island feel. Especially great if you have kids because there is a pool to go swimming in! The food is good not fantastic though. But service is ok.... Every time we go here it is an hour wait and you can go to the bar to get appetizer but it's pointless because the bartenders only serve the locals. The prime rib, shrimp, quest, and ribs are amazing!!! You can never go wrong when ordering those!! The views and overall experience of being on the water and watching the sunset set into the water is priceless! Yeah, maybe the food and service isn't that amazing. But when you are sitting under a huge tiki hut in the Florida Keys watching your kids swim in the pool and enjoying the amazing views it's completely worth it and a great place to go! read more
