This was the automotive shop that I tried when I first moved to Reston, and I've since found another mechanic that I prefer. The service is above average here, but it was sticker shock and a misdiagnosis that caused me to switch. First of all, they really make you comfortable while you wait; this is something a lot of automotive shops don't do. Admittedly, my current mechanic's waiting room is sterile, impersonal, and has the bare minimum of uncomfortable chairs and small tables. The waiting area here is equipped with comfortable chairs, refreshments, and entertainment. The staff are really friendly too. However, the second time I went in to get an issue with my car looked at, things didn't go quite right. Long story, but the short version is that they misdiagnosed an issue that I was having and quoted me a lot more than I thought it should be. When I brought it to another shop for a second quote before I emptied my wallet, I found out that it was a different issue that would cost me about a third of what I was initially quoted. I had nothing major done here. Just inspection and tire rotation. However, the service was outstanding. The nearby SL Sunoco station told me I had to sit and wait in line to get these things done. These guys let me simply drop the car off the night before and they called me the next morning when it was done. When I went to pickup the car the vibe was great. They had a clean, comfortable waiting room and the guys behind the counter were very helpful. I could tell this place is really customer service driven. Also, the cost of the rotation was less then what Sunoco was going to charge. I'm thrilled to know there is a clean honest auto shop here in Reston. I'll be taking all my cars here from now on. I don't typically write reviews for places, but I decided to pop my cherry for these guys - they are awesome. I had to get a tire repaired at another, big-name "Tire and Battery" company. They told me that my TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) sensor was rusted-over and needed to be replaced before they could fix the tire. I went to these guys for a second opinion and not only did they tell me my TPMS was fine on the damaged tire, but that they checked all the other sensors as well. They saved me from a $300 repair job. Jason, the guy who I was dealing with on the phone (I had dropped it off and returned to work), kept me really informed, was extremely helpful and based on their work - honest! Today was my first visit to Sunset Hills automotive. i called before I arrived to ensure there was not 20 people waiting for their emissions inspection. I arrived and the gentleman told me there was one car on the rack and I would be next. I heard him inform the tech he had another emissions waiting.....so here I sit 1 hour later and two vehicles were taken before me.....needless to say I'm not very happy. Like most long-time Virginia residents, I've had my share of experience with vehicle inspections. The ideal inspector, in my view, is someone who will catch the important things (Wow! You have no brakes!), but give a person a pass on the minor things (By the way, you have a 3 mm crack in the corner of your windshield). Most mechanics fall somewhere in the middle. But not the guys at Sunset Hills! They seem to think that minor fraying of a wiper blade is grounds for failing a car and then pushing an overpriced parts purchase and installation. In their defense, wiper blades are supposed to be inspected, but minor fraying does nothing to hinder the performance of the blades. Failing my vehicle was just a nice way for these guys to make a quick and extremely easy buck. read more

As a female who has had her car worked on multiple times by Sunset Hills Automotive, I can't shout it from the mountain tops loud enough how well I feel treated when I get work done there. The staff at the customer service counter is more than helpful, they never try to "nickel and dime" you to pad their bottom line, and the actual work done on the cars speaks for itself. RE: Liz H. "How much will you charge me to cook this SPAM sandwich and tater tots? Ok, how much will you charge me to cook this filet mignon with roasted potatoes? What!?!?!?!?! I used to be a loyal wiygul customer until they did me wrong one two many times. One of my coworkers suggested Sunset Hills Auto and I am so glad I went! First I went because my car desperately needed something under the hood replaced. (Totally forgot what it was!) but Jim was awesome and super helpful. He was to the point and didn't try to sell me anything extra that I didn't need. That was quite refreshing. The second time I went was for an oil change. Out the door was $92... So pretty steep for an oil change, but I guess that's what you pay for quality service. I will be back next time my car needs anything. TL;DR You have to pay for the reading of the code caused by Check Engine Light. I wasn't able to enjoy their service and my communication with the staff was rather short. The 2-star rating is because reading the status code is not free. Cost me $126 (about the price of the diagnostic tool itself). AAMCO does it for free. Granted, I had to ask this in advance. Coworkers Bad experience: A co worker's belongings were stolen from his car. There were no signs of forced entry so either an employee was the culprit, or they were careless enough to leave the car unlocked while it was sitting in the parking lot. My bad experience: I brought my car in for an oil change. They asked if I had my own oil. Coincidentally I had just picked up a box from Costco so I said yes. They ended up using my oil and charging me full price for an oil change....so I asked, how did I benefit from using my own oil? The guy said only if it's synthetic would it have saved me money, which it wasn't. Thanks for warning me. read more

TL;DR: They screwed up and basically told me it was my fault. This review is based on my most recent experience at this shop, which is a bit unfair because I've taken two cars here over that last five years for minor work and have been generally happy. This time I took my car in for some real simple work -- take off the winter wheels and tires, and put on the summer wheels and tires. First thing I notice when walking up to my car is that the hood isn't closed properly. That's weird because there would be no reason to open it. Then I try to get the car going and it starts making a loud groan. I jump out and see that they've put the summer wheels and tires on wrong. My car has staggered wheels and tires (wider in the rear and narrower in the front). They had put the wide wheels and tires on the driver side and the narrower wheels and tires on the passenger side. Amateur mistake, but forgivable on a busy and 90+ degree day. I go inside, probably not with the best demeanor, but I never get really testy (I'm Canadian and I get teased a lot for being too nice when things go wrong), and say that I have an issue with the work done. I explain the issue to the man at the desk, and he tells me that "it would have been nice if you had told us" about the different sizes (sounds innocuous, but the tone was accusatory). Sorry, but it is not my job to tell you how to do your job. Especially when checking tire size before you put them on the car should be standard operating procedure. Sure, most cars have square wheels and tires (same at all four corners), but it is common for sports cars to be staggered as mine is. This attitude infuriated me, but they set things right, and I was on my way in minutes, until I realized that the tire pressures were wrong because they didn't bother fixing that when they fixed the placement. In the end I can get over the oversights on what is often rote work, even if they got to me at the time. Lapses in concentration happen and the mistakes in this instance were not catastrophic. But if you're in the service industry, it is your job to know how to provide the service, and not the customer's to tell you how to do it. And when you screw up, it's definitely not the time to cop an attitude. read more

Local automotive shop that is certified to conduct Virginia safety and emissions tests. - SERVICE: I came here for my Virginia safety test, and was given expedient, friendly service. I had scheduled an appointment on their website and received a call later that day confirming that they had received my request. They noted at that time the tests are usually conducted on a first come, first serve basis. They also proactively suggested I look into whether I need a Virginia emissions test as well, since they deduced my number as being from out of state - I don't, because I just had the test done in my home state, but I was glad they mentioned it since new residents might not be aware of these requirements. I showed up the morning of the test, handed over my keys, and was able to leave just 30 minutes later. In the meantime, I read in their waiting area, which has a Keurig machine and comfortable leather chairs. read more

They just finished plugging a run flat for me in 45 minutes and for 20 bucks. It is the day after Thankgiving and they were open. Many auto shops are closed. Often told you cannot repair a run flat but they did this morning. Am thrilled to be back on road. First time customer too. read more

It was 8 a.m. REALLY cold. I was late. I pulled up into the turn lane and was back in the middle of the lane in line to turn. I hopped out of my car for something and to my dismay when I turned to get back in the car was locked. It was running and my phone was stuck inside with my gloves. It was very windy with a wind chill obnoxiously low. The Sunoco auto repair shop was in the distance and so I took off running. The green light came and people were honking, dodging my car, and angry. I ran over to the station and frantically asked for some help. Morgan came out from the back and graciously cross the road to help me. I had absolutely zero cash on me and wanted to tip him but couldn't. Not only was he very understanding and helped me for free he was also very good natured and didn't come across as inconvenienced.. The whole thing was embarassing. Morgan pretty damn good looking he handled it very sweetly. And I was, as usual, a clumsy mess. Thanks Morgan and Sunoco Auto for the rescue. I would never hesitate to both recommend anyone here but also to take my vehicle here as well. Clearly they care and thus I would trust them with my vehicle any day. read more

First off, to Liz, most car repair places can't really give you a true-to-life quote unless they look at the car. That's just the way it is. But boycott this place and feel free to visit Merchant's or Good Year in Reston (both terrible, by the way)......keep Sunset Hills to the folks who appreciate independently owned and operated car repair places. These guys have worked on my car doing everything from basic oil changes and inspections to changing tires and brake pads. They're reasonable, quality-driven and have the happiest customer service of any car repair shop I've been to (all of the above must explain their recent expansion). Plus a free shuttle to pretty much anywhere in Reston or Herndon. They are on the right track for further expansion. read more

After a costly repair on my car, another highly reviewed repair shop in Reston urged that I also spend a ton of money to replace the struts on my aging (but well functioning) car. Without mentioning any of this to the crew at Sunset I asked for their opinion. The said that if I wanted to, the could replace the struts - at a much lower cost. But, they then said that they would not recommend it; the car really didn't need it, and the improved ride would not be worth it. They also, knocked down the arguments for why this repair was necessary that I was fed by the first place. I hate being lied to, and always feel I'm getting ripped off when it comes to cars in general. But, in my book, when you find people who will give it to you straight AND give you good service you stay with them. These guys have my business henceforth. Went in for a tire repair. They found two screws and plugged the leak. No appointment necessary and I waited about 30 mins. And they only charged $20! Clean comfy waiting area, clean bathroom! I previously had a tire patched at one of the national chains that required an appt (3 days later) and a 2 Hour wait and was charged $35. Sunset Hills has earned a new customer. read more

So I went down the street to Wiygul Auto where he squeezed me in and shuttled me home. Called me back a few hours later and all set! I really like this shop. I have been to several shops in numerous years, but never had a good shop like these guys. They fit you in when you need to, they have walkin oil changes, and other stuff. We've been using them for a couple of years now and are pleased with their service and the convenience. You don't have to make an appointment in advance as long as you're willing to leave the car. They will drop you off somewhere nearby (the Wiehle Park & RIde lot is close by), although I've never taken then up on it since it's right next to the W&OD, making for a pleasant walk home. They do safety inspections but not emissions, but they will take it somewhere for the emissions test if you can leave the car. read more

THESE GUYS ARE GREAT! Every time I go in there I end up having my bill come back less than expected. They are quick and straight forward about all of the work they do and what things they expect to run into if any are expected to come up. Do not trust. Brought in car for check engine light. They charged me $500 to replace spark plugs and a coil. Felt like rip off but if it fixed problem, so be it. Picked up car and noticed it would barely start. Planned on taking back but within few weeks I drove home and saw engine smoking. Called them and they said it was ok to drive. I brought back in and they told me gasket blown and would cost 6,000 to fix. Car worth less. So I wasted $500 on a bs misdiagnosis and probably did further damage to engineer bc of this. On bright side, bc of their dishonesty or incompetence, I got to spend thousands on a new car. read more

This shop isn't very honest. I took it in bc my window didn't work. They wanted to charge me $800 to replace a window module and $1200 to replace control arms. There was no way I was going to pay that. I took it to a friends shop out in chantilly and he told me the wire to the module was disconnected and I didn't have to replace my control arms. My experience at Sunset Automotive was one you don't typically get in other shops- in the best way possible! The gentleman at the front were very attentive and quickly got me settled while my car was looked at. Morgan, the mechanic who looked at and fixed my car, was incredible!!! Not only did he listen to my long winded explanation (when he probably could figure out what was wrong 30 seconds in), but he diagnosed the problem and spent time explaining it to me. He even took a video to show me the parts that needed to be fixed! No mechanic has ever taken the time to show me, describe it in layman's terms, and ensure I understood what was being done. He was the best! I'll definitely be asking for him by name when I go back. In a customer service business where people are usually (I would assume) not happy to be coming into the shop (because something is wrong with their vehicle) the whole shop was extremely friendly and provided excellent customer service. read more

I have been getting my car serviced at Sunset Hill for about a year now and I have been impressed with each visit. The people running the front are always friendly and forthcoming about the service, price and any options. I am not a nuts and bolts guy but I understand the industry and can provide some self service to my car. So I know enough to realize that these guys don't try to up sell customers without reason. I also appreciate that they let you know that a service will cost you money. For example, I got an oil change but my two tail lights were out. The mechanic came out and explained the issue and quoted the price. Some places just do it and ask forgiveness later. I hate that. It's just about the worst thing a body shop can do, and they don't even come close. On top of this, the services provided and efficient and well done. It's about all you can ask for. When I first became a customer there were only 2 locations and the service was good. Now that they have expanded I do not recommend them AT ALL. The last 2 repairs I had done were a total waste of money and not at all acceptable. Unfortunately, they didn't seem to care. I had to have a new exhaust system installed to pass this year's emission's test. They installed it twice and it still isn't right. The first time they didn't even use parts that fit my car and tried to pass it off as being okay. The second time they used parts that were a closer fit, but they did a sloppy job and it looks ridiculously bad.They said it was the best they could do. The other repair was to fix a leak in my trunk, but after taking it back 2 additional times - it still leaks. A total waste of money. DO NOT GO HERE. read more
