There's mismatched chairs and tables in the middle of the convenient store. I don't think it's been wiped down in a REALLY long time. I arrived on a Saturday at 1pm. Without cash. Traveled 5 miles out of my way to the nearest atm, and returned. Waited an additional 15 minutes just to place my order. After placing my order, waited a full hour for a bacon cheeseburger with an egg on top. Granted, the 2 person kitchen was very busy, and the burger was pretty good when it finally got to me. However the hour that I waited, nursing a tepid black cherry soda, gave me ample time in which to note the numerous health code violations occurring in the open kitchen. The cooks handled note pads, phones, markers, and ready to eat foods indescriminately, bare handed, and in the hour and a half that I watched, the cooks did not wash their hands or put on a pair of gloves once, accept after handling raw meat one of the cooks took the time to rinse her hands with cold water before going back to the flat top. The prep area looked as though it had not been cleaned and sanitized in months. If none of that bothers you, by all means go get yourself a decent burger, but caveat emptor; this is a DIVE. I think at one point it was a gas station, but now they just sell sandwiches, eggs, and convenient store goodies. This place is about as country as it can get. Everyone orders burgers here, that's what they are known for. You can actually call ahead and order. I've called twenty minutes in advance and still waited another twenty minutes when I got there for my burger to be ready. You'll be shocked at the business this place does. There isn't waiter service. This is a walk up, order, and sit in whatever seat you can grab type of place. Conversations in the place typically consist of who is hunting what today, or building what, or the latest updates on so and so's kids. That being said, it has an extremely dirty feel. I would always comment on how nasty the grease build up in the kitchen looked. Lo and Behold, a few months back they had a grease fire. I have been to this establishment four times, but the last two times that I went, on July 19, 2017 and April 11, 2018, I got food poisoning from their "famous" Sunshine Burger. The July 2017 visit caused mild stomach cramping, and the April 2018 visit caused a high fever. My companions on the April visit also got food poisoning. The burgers were great, no doubt about it, but I'm never going back to this establishment as long as their food preparation and cleanliness standards are so low that they cause food poisoning on a regular basis. read more

I read a review about this place 8 years ago and it stuck in my mind but they were 20 miles from home, and no burger is worth a 20 mile 1 way trip. Recently I was driving out Georgia Ave and drove by this Gs Station with a Burger sign on it. I wondered if it could be the one - after all how many burger joints hide out in gas stations? i stopped, got a bacon cheeseburger, and it was incredible! Juicy, well seasoned, huge and delicious. The burgers have fresh toppings and plenty of them, and when they add bacon, it is not two crappy little strips, it's LOTS of bacon. The food is excellent, freshly prepared, not too greasy and reasonably priced but not cheap. The decor is early 50's basement, and if you want a burger - it is the place to go! It is only a 20 mile round trip now, and I go often. That first morning I stopped, the 2 long tables were filled with deer hunters after their hunt and it was very busy with quite a line. I've heard about this place for a long time and had the opportunity to go. Did not realize they only take cash. Saw the sign on the window and walked in anyway hoping they might have an ATM. I greeted the woman behind the counter and asked if there was an ATM. "Nope." That was it. She offered no other assistance. No apologies. Nothing. She could have cared less. Someone just needs to take over the store and make it presentable and offer a selection of items to make it an actual store (and competition for the one across the street that is so expensive); or better yet, someone needs to redo the place and make it a diner by putting tables out for patrons since the counter and few tables are always filled. I've driven by this place for all of my life and had no idea what was going on inside. Lol! Thanks to a Yelp email about places to find delicious burgers in MoCo, I learned! I stopped in yesterday with my 75 yr. old mother and my 9 yr. old daughter to order take out. Of course, we were just amazed at the amount of people waiting to place an order; one after another, each ordering their own customized burgers. The one thing in common? Everyone's "base" burger was a bacon cheeseburger....from that point each and every order was different; there was a lady that wanted ham & egg added, another wanted sauerkraut and there was even a guy ordering a bacon cheeseburger with an egg and peanut butter! Each time the sweet lady behind the counter would write the order down and tell the customer to wait while going back to loading up these large steaming burgers with all the fixings. The lady working the grill had her hands full as well! She had 20 burgers going in various stages of cooking, easily a pound of bacon going and she was toasting all the buns. Following everyone's lead we ordered our custom bacon cheeseburgers and proceeded to wait about 30 minutes. I wasn't upset by the wait because these ladies were BUSY, but all the while just as pleasant as they could be. We paid the cashier (yes, they do take credit cards) and rushed home to enjoy our "Best Burger's in MoCo". Our burgers were delicious! The size of the burger patty is very generous as was the requested toppings as well as the bacon and cheese. I would definitely go back and order take out again. On that note, I can't imagine dining IN the place; it truly is disgusting. (No, I didn't venture into the restroom like some other Yelp-er's) I think from now on, I'll call ahead and just run over and pick up the burgers to go. Every single person who came into the Sunshine General Store as I sat and waited at the counter ordered the same thing--a cheeseburger. That's a sign. And when the place is starting to get full at 11am, that's another sign. Indeed, Sunshine General Store serves one of the best cheeseburgers of all time. I knew I was in for a special treat when I watched the lady slap a massive hunk of fresh hamburger on the grill. It takes a while for something that large to cook, so I had a chance to get to know some of the regulars who congregated at the counter. The pros knew to call their orders in ahead. But I was in no hurry--I love places like this--totally old school. As for my cheeseburger, it was as good as advertised. Massive, fresh bun, not overly dressed, tasty. This place might win my vote for best burger experience ever. I have been twice and both times it took me a few days to get over it. I love the atmosphere although i get why some might complain. This place is like james bond posing as a garbage man to sneak into the kremlin. When you arrive, your first thought is wtf? It is an old dingy not well stocked convenience store. In the back are 2 ladies grilling their butts off though. I do not get why or how they do it, but their hamburgers taste like no other. Fresh meat, well seasoned, and huge patties at a low cost. I ate outside on the picnic tables today as it was nice weather. I went with grilled onions and bacon and shared with the wife. I took some fun photos including a panorama of the inside. I will try to post here on yelp. This place should be on tv and possibly have its own show. How the food can be so amazing and have such a loyal following but never invest in fixing itself up is beyond me. In a way, you dont want it fixed up. Where to begin. I think Ray C. summed things up pretty nicely. You pull up and think, "I'm at a gas station, I think, no ones getting gas though so why are so many cars out front during lunch," and so you go in, some of the usual gas station type munchies, chips (they have Utz Red Hot chips, 100% win) drinks (such a nice variety, they still have some Pepsi Throwback leftover) and then you go over and realize they've got more burgers than you can count going on the grill, or its half covered with bacon as they're replenishing the stock that just went. With so many burgers cooking, what else do you think you should order? Regular, with cheese, with bacon, or with cheese and bacon (they put on a good deal of bacon imo). Lettuce, tomatoes, onions (GET THEM GRILLED), pickles (sweet or dill), hot peppers, mustard, ketchup, mayo, sauerkraut, sunny side up egg.... my point is, if they have it, they will put it on the burger if you ask them to. Personally I go cheeseburger, ketchup, mayo, grilled onions, and lettuce. Sometimes the tomato gets in the way or falls out so I came to just skip them altogether, but man thinking about it is making my mouth water. You can sit and eat there at the counter or the tables they have set up, or take it to go. If you're eating there you can pick up drinks and chips and open and eat them. Just remember to pay for them on the way out, I mean come on, how many small places will let you do that before you pay. Oh yeah, they'll cut your burger in half unless you tell them otherwise, which usually makes you get halves that have different amounts of meat. I will say though, ONE time I did have an overcooked burger, it was still very good, but a little on the dry side, but this is ONE out of the countless times I've been there, and I frequented it a few times a week for a month or 2, but can only make it out every once in awhile now. Oh my God....omg omg omg this is the dirtiest place I've been so far in the USA....got pancakes and eggs with ham. Ham was disgusting, pancakes had a soap taste I felt like if i was eating powder soap at some point...it had crumbs of black stuff on top I don't know where those came from...eggs were OK. I tried to go to the bathroom don't even attempt that I'm sorry to say there was crap all over the toilet even on the tank of the toilet....omg this has been the worst experience in my life I will never go back never....it doesn't even deserve the one star....I don't know how the Health department can have this place open....I'm sorry if food and location are not good my stars are this time an overall grade. This was quite the experience. The place was PACKED. The staff were very friendly and working extremely hard to get all of the orders right. I couldn't believe that they could keep everything straight. We had to wait a really long time, but I don't fault the staff. It's just that the burgers take a long time to cook (they are HUGE). I loved the huge burgers at the Sunshine General Store! If you're an old native Washingtonian, the best description I have is the burgers taste reminds me of Little Tavern. This place is definitely the opposite of fancy, and certainly not where you would have "date night", but if you're in the neighborhood, and you spot the general store on the corner, I recommend you go in and have a seat at one of the few stools by the grill. One unique thing about the grill is everyone talks to everyone. Nobody was looking at their phone. The menu is very limited, and you cannot get french fries with your burger. Your limited to what's available on the racks inside the store. Mostly chips, soda, and water. Prices are very reasonable, the staff was very friendly and talkative, and burgers are very good. One evening, a friend of mine instant messaged me saying that he wanted to go to Sunshine. I asked what and where that was and he responded that it's a store that has one of the most delicious burgers ever. He then proceeded to tell me that in was in Georgia and New Hampshire. Thinking how absurd he would be to go to a whole different state to get the burgers, I figured he saw it on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Little did I know, he meant the intersection of New Hampshire Ave and Georgia Ave, which is only a few miles from my house (terribly embarassing). Upon first arriving there, based on first impressions, it would seem that it was a run down gas station. Boy was I wrong. Upon entering the store, you are greeted with candy, chips, ice cream, and sodas all over. And they have a giant variety on drinks. Moving a little further into the back, there was a crowd of people waiting for their orders to come up. You get a nice road side diner feel in there, with all sorts of people getting their breakfast/lunch/dinner fixed up for them. The cooks are very nice and are more than willing to make your burger the way you want it. As Tommy M stated: if they have it, they'll do it. Their menu has a variety of sandwich items, but also breakfast items as well that is cooked to serve. For my very first time, I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger with grilled onions. Boy was I in for a surprise. Upon looking at what was on the grill, a giant 1/2 lb burger was being prepared for not only myself, but other people as well, ordering up to 4 burgers at time even. They pile high the bacon (copious amounts) and all the other toppings you would put on a burger. Receiving the burger (which was cut in half unless asked for), my mouth watered. Biting into the burger for the first time was instant euphoria and ecstasy in my mouth. The burger was so juicy and delicious and the bacon was nice and sweet (maple bacon I'm assuming). I downed that burger in an instant. The method of payment is also very nice too. You get your food immediately upon order, and you have the option for your food then and there, or doing it after. How great is that? Long story short, do not judge a book by its cover. By appearances of the store, Sunshine looks like a run down place. But what's inside is an amazing surprise that will have you coming back for more. The nice home feeling is a great one that will just add to your experience. I will definitely be going there more often (also knowing that it isn't states away is more assuring). P.S. If you're ordering your last meal before they strap you to the table and inject you, this is the burger you would want. I've never been disappointed from my first bite all the way to the last. They are consistently wonderful, hot and perfectly cooked. Don't pay attention to the aesthetics around you, focus on the burger, it's all about the burger. Used to buy worms and licenses for fishing at Tridelphia Lake here when we were kids, but that's all way in the past for this store now. The grill in back is semi-famous for its massive "Sunshine Burger", but we go for the egg n cheese sandwiches that our kids have loved growing up. Chicken salad sandwich is my other fave here. This really is a low low-key country food counter that is fun just to break away from urban cookie cutter places, and if you're an old local, the chances you'll see acquaintances is high. I drove by this general store for years not knowing that they sold amazing burgers inside of it. I had a few friends tell me about it, but you ussually dont expect a general store to have good food. What I came across was quite the surprise... The food was unbelievable. Not the cleanest establishment, but oh my are the burgers amazing. They have a large variety of burger toppings including scrapple which is bar none the best scrapple I have had in my entire life. You can have it cooked your way, with your preferred toppings. There is litterly two tables for seating so not the best seating around, but the amazing tastiness of the food outweighs the lack of seating. Try this place out! You wont regret it! read more
