You really get that small-town, older American, Norman Rockwell, feel. But this isn't about just the vibe. After your massive patty is cooked, and the toppings are added (ask for pickles!) you are presented with your food. You will see then that this place is all about the meat. Today brought me to Silver Spring and I decided to go back north via Georgia Avenue and finally stop by TSGS. Home of the Sunshine Burger which I must try next time. I sat at the counter wondering WTF I was getting into. Dark. Dank. A little dirty. I arrived at the tail end of the lunch rush and placed my order with the server (Margarita?) consisting of a simple bacon cheeseburger topped with LTM, onion and dill slices. After I ordered, others came in. My single burger on the grill quickly became 15 balanced between "here" and "to go." Phone was ringing off the hook for more carry out orders. The burgers looked freshly prepared for the grille. The sizzle was music to my ears. Within 10 minutes I had this masterpiece in front of me ready to devour. And I did. One tasty bite at a time. The patty seemed to be a half pound. Bacon generously topped the beef. It was very, very good. Loved it. Glad I stopped by. Is TSGS the best? Tough call. But the experience of this joint is a plus. The staff was very friendly. I tipped well over the norm as some were leaving singles on the counter for burgers rounding off at nearly nine bucks. Don't do that. Seriously. Sunshine is incredible...my father ordered a burger with cheese, ham, bacon, egg, tomato, and lettuce. He confidently stated that this is the best burger he has ever had. It doesn't look like much from the outside as previous reviews have said, but sitting at the counter has a distinct charm. The ladies working the grill are friendly and warm, and regulars come through one after another. I would not recommend this for a vegetarian as all of the food is cooked on the same grill which is full of meat. They do have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich though! I happened to be in the area and had previously read the reviews for the burgers at the Sunshine General Store so I decided to stop in. The SGS is a little store and old gas station. When you go inside its not much to look at and so old that parts look a bit dirty, but if you can get past that and get to the back of the store to the very old grill you're in for a treat! When I was there, there were about 6 or 7 people, a few eating at the only indoor table and a few waiting for burgers. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger. They do have maybe 10 other sandwiches but none had been reviewed and I wanted a great burger. It takes about 20 minutes for burgers and you can call and order in advance. My burger was ready and since I was kind of far from home and it was too hot to eat outside I settled for my car with the AC. I unwrapped my burger from the white paper and took a bite from what must be a 1/2 lb burger. It Was bursting with flavor and one of the best burgers I've ever had. Nothing fancy but a flavorful burger from start to finish. When I ordered I was disappointed that they didn't have fries but truthfully the burger was big and I couldn't even finish it so I don't know where I would have put fries. Finally got to try this place. I drive by it every day around 4:45-5, which means I always just miss them. Made a special trip at lunch time and glad I did--that was a giant tasty bacon cheeseburger. Really nice work. The patty was thick and huge. They cooked it well/medium-well. Normally that's longer than I'd like for such a thick burger, but nothing was lost here. Really really juicy with a nice crisp to the edge. Big sesame seed bun--nondescript but they get full mileage out of it by buttering and toasting it. We stopped after a soccer tournament nearby due to the positive yelp reviews. The setting is very rustic, but the burgers are delicious and the service is friendly. We waited 20-25 minutes for 3 bacon cheeseburgers (we came at 12:30 pm in a Sunday). Seating is limited. There were lots of locals calling in orders to go. We were happy to learn that they take credit cards now. There is a large selection of drinks and chips to accompany the burgers, as well as homemade banana bread. Today was a disappoint in regards to the visit to this establishment. To start, we were in route to meet a friend at Waredaca and we passed the Sunshine General Store and Grill and my wife noticed the sign and remember she went there as a kid when she would go horse back riding and so wanted to go get a burger because of how good they were went she went as a child. We continued on to Waredaca and told our friend to jump in the car so, we can go back and get burgers to take back to the brewery. We did so. Once we walked through the door, it was dark and just an odd feeling of discomfort with the decision we just made, at least that's how I felt and was open about it. There were many people in the area waiting for burgers or indulging in their lunch however, being a person with a keen eye for attention to detail, I noticed many things that raised many flags. In a few words, it was a run down, disgusting establishment from the grille to the store itself. With no one taking an initiative to do anything to keep a clean place of work, it was unfortunate we made the choice to follow through with ordering. Our burgers were done, we took them to the front counter, paid and were on our way back to the brewery however, I could not let go from the experience we were all just had when we were so excited to start. Even though I had my feelings, I had one bite and could not believe I did so, with how filthy the place was. My wife had maybe three bites and our friend attempted to at least eat half before we all put them back into the plastic bag and walked it to the trash can where they now sit and deteriorate in their own grease. After all of this rambling on, it goes to show that first impressions are everything and that the feeling in your gut is real. We could not get past the fact that the place was a terribly disgusting that we could not even eat more than a few bites just because we had spent the money on it. To read other reviews and hear that the place shuts down with no notice for "no reason" it makes me wonder, were they shut down under inspection? Who knows, but that makes sense to me. read more

In the little town of Sunshine, Maryland you will find the Sunshine General Store. It is surrounded by old gas pumps that pumped their last drops of gas years ago. The windows are barely see through and some are even boarded up. The bathroom is just a little closet converted into a bathroom, where they still store all the cleaning supplies. You start walking toward the back and you walk past the store shelves (which are mostly empty) and might hold one or two cans of soup. BUT THEN YOU SEE, the old old menu. That's how you know.. you are now in the promise land. You will have to wait 30 min, but if you will ever take my word on anything i say, take my word when i say, this is the BEST burger you will ever have. They are soooo juicy, sooo big, and they will never disappoint. The staff are the sweetest people you will ever meet. Please don't let looks fool you here. This is a MUST. read more

I love the Sunshine market. I get BLT's from there very often. The burgers are also delicious. The hamburger patty's are massive, and the BLT's are also huge. Everything is cooked very fresh, so yes you will have to wait 20 minutes for your hamburger. This is not McDonald's. The only reason I gave them 4 star instead of 5 is because they don't have a great ordering system. They have completely missed my order after I waited for 25 minutes for a BLT. The gentleman that ordered after me received his cheese steak so I inquired. They apologized that they had flipped the page too soon and just missed my order. Also, you sometimes have to stand and wait a while they take phone orders. Most companies handle the customers in the store first, then take the phone orders. It can get pretty packed on the weekends, especially sunny days. I have seen many groups of people stop for lunch. Don't let the gritty exterior or nor the caution tape around the empty gas pumps deter you. This place is worth it! The interior is pretty dingy and lacks windows; there is one family style table, and a few ripped up bar stools for sitting inside, which can become very crowded with people waiting for their orders. The exterior does have some picnic tables if it's not too hot or too cold. Killer big, handmade burgers sold inside a kind of skanky but very friendly general store. Extremely busy. The two ladies behind the grill run their butts off and know almost all of their customers. Worth a drive to the (sort of) country. You order your burger or hot dog (or, if you are "different" and a sandwich) and then grab a soda from the glass cooler, chips or whatever from the shelves. The sandwich counter only sells sandwiches and cole slaw. But don't get the cole slaw. Hear they have an awesome breakfast. But imagine it would get quite crowded. We came upon this spot unexpectedly, when we were visiting a kennel in the area. I needed some gas for our trip home and asked where the nearest station was to fill up. The kennel owner directed me to the nearby Sunshine General Store, and informed me with quite a sheepish grin that they happen to serve "the best burgers in Maryland". Well no further prompting was needed, as my curiosity was awakened as well as my appetite. Anyway, we pulled up and I could tell that something was not right with the gas pumps, so we decided to just go fill our other tanks. We walked into an old, decrepit, general store, with rotting ceiling tiles, mold, and curiously chosen products sprinkled throughout the racks and shelves. Some areas like the salty snack stand looked well stocked while others looked like they could use some dusting. At first, we didn't see anything so we asked the cashier if this is the place that we can get the best burgers in Maryland and she pointed behind us to a tiny counter busy with lunch folk. There were maybe four stools, a picnic bench, and two ladies behind the counter feverishly putting mounds of ground beef onto the griddle. This was as bare bones an operation as you can get. No fry baskets, no menu, just an old fashioned board with grey letters that were discolored from all the grease and dust. We ordered our cheeseburgers and then stood around waiting for them to be cooked to order. I had high hopes, since the meat looked fresh and generously sized, the buns were toasted, and the clientele looked like they drove a bit to get there. I was almost salivating envisioning the juicy drippings running down my chin. The weather was good, so we sat outside at some other picnic benches that were nestled next to the roadside. We unwrapped our sandwiches and were ready to be blown away or at least impressed. First bite, hmmmm, second bite, hmmmmm, third bite, frown. Although the patty was generous there was no juice and not a lot of "beefy" flavor.. The bun though soft like, was almost brittle, and it kind of fell apart. Reminded me of those preservative filled rolls (wonder bread anyone?) that seemed to last forever because they never got hard but instead morphed into a whole different texture on the tongue. Not good. In the end it was just alright. Hate to say it, but Five Guys had more umphhh. Guess there won't be any "road trips" to come to this joint. Burgers: A+. Hygiene: F-. In addition to the general and utter lack of cleanliness, the people handling the food were not wearing gloves while I was there. I don't care how much you wash your hands, this is a cardinal sin in food preparation. That said, of course, the bacon cheeseburger is flat-out the best anywhere. They use Kunzler bacon, which is excellent, and the beef tastes very fresh. So I split the difference and gave them 3 stars. I certainly wouldn't make it a habit to eat in a place this vulnerable to bacterial contamination but as a once-every-year-or-two treat, I can live with it. PS. Bring cash. Okay, yes...this place is kind of dirty and run down. Fine. And yes, they lose a star for that because at first I was put off by it, but my world changed as I ate my meal and conversed with those that worked at the counter. I heard great things about Sunshine Burgers before I ever tried them. I also drove past the Sunshine General Store many, many times without ever going in... or even thinking that some of the best burgers in Maryland were just inside. As others have stated, the outside (and inside) of this place is the definition of a Dive. The building looks to be in disrepair, there are gas pumps outside but I've never been there while they've been in service, inside there are tiles coming up off the floor, I've caught glimpses of the bathroom (but haven't dared to go in), the rear counter looks like it was installed in the 50s and abused regularly since then, the floors look dirty and the walls... well, you get the idea *deep breath* All that being said, this review is about the food: I've now eaten here a number of times and had breakfast here once. The food is always good as is the service. Keep in mind, this is a no-frills dining experience, but if you want a good tasting generously-sized hamburger for a reasonable price, don't drive by the dumpy little white paint-peeling general store on the corner of Georgia and New Hampshire. If you're a bit worried about the "ambiance", you can always take it to go. Personally, I'll take good food from a non-chain restaurant any day of the week. read more

My favorite eating establishment when I'm in a casual mood - which is almost always! My husband and I have been eating here since before he was my husband (eons and decades ago). The breakfast is wonderful and well worth the wait. The bacon is absolutely superb, and eggs are perfect. But the steak subs are my favorite - and the tomatoes are out of this world, even when they're out of season. I've taken my kids to this place on my way to the Glenwood Library, and they love it, too. Yes, it's dingy and dirty and the bathroom is repulsive. No health food here, either, so don't bother asking for whole grains or salads. It's the character of the grill crowd that makes this place incredibly comfortable. If you don't live in the country, but wish you did - try it. But don't stop for gas. They don't have it anymore. read more

I had a friend bring me a burger (just because i was hungry and lazy at home) from Sunshine, and the burger was hot and delicious even after having made a 20-minute trip. I happened to be around the Brookeville area the next day and had to stop in. Although the place is dingy to say the least, the service is friendly and burgers are amazing. The entire menu is delicious but the Sunshine burgers....the BEST burgers I have ever had in my entire life! The burgers run around $6 but are worth every cent. The breakfast menu is very reasonable.
