A Hidden Local Gem in San Pedro! If you're craving fresh, flavorful sushi in San Pedro, Sushi 21 is the spot you don't want to miss. This place truly feels like a neighborhood treasure--unassuming from the outside, but once you sit down, you realize you've found something special. The All You Can Eat option is absolutely the way to go. The fish is consistently fresh, the rolls are beautifully made, and the portions are just right so you can try a little bit of everything without feeling overwhelmed. From classic favorites to creative specialty rolls, every bite tastes like it was made with care. The chefs are attentive, friendly, and clearly take pride in their craft. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming--exactly what you'd expect from a long-loved local spot. Whether you're a sushi lover or just dipping your toes into Japanese cuisine, Sushi 21 makes you feel right at home. San Pedro has many great places to eat, but Sushi 21 truly stands out. Fresh food, great service, and an AYCE menu that's worth every penny. A true hidden gem that locals know and love.
I have been to this place maybe once before but I never really went back because it is in an awkward place. There is not a lot off foot traffic around, and I am not really sure where to park. Admittedly, these are not barriers that I cannot overcome. They are not a mountain half the size of Fuji, they are just inconveniences that I rather not deal with. And then one day, I was walking back to my car, and I saw someone who I thought might use a meal. I later learned his name was Oliver. I asked Oliver, if he would like a meal on me. He explained that he was just going to KFC for something to eat, so yeah, he could eat. We both entered and sat and enjoy the fare of Sushi 21. And the place was a pleasure--- a big Arigato! I owe to them. As I sat with Oliver, I took notice of the decorations. One specifically called my attention. It was a Japanese person, dressed in a regal robe, maybe a Kimono, scribing in parchment, not sure if it was papyrus, cause that belongs more to Egyptian culture. I wondered what the person was writing? A recipe for miso soup? A Haiku? Wisdom for the ages? I chose wisdom for the ages cause the person seemed lost in wonder yet focused in thought. That is how I get when I write wisdom for the ages. One of my favorite Japanese proverbs is the following: The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, and the second best day is today. Maybe I said it wrong. But I know I got its spirt right. I thought that Oliver could benefit from this moment. He shared that he had moved to California for a fresh start after painful years, but he already felt behind. He did not share much just that. And I did not want to hear more, if he was not ready to share more. I am glad that he accepted my offer, as I would want someone to buy me some food, some good food with color and dignity, if I ever was so hungry and broke. And this place did offer good food that had color and dignity. This is best represented in Oliver's order: a Bento box. As the picture shows his chicken teriyaki Bento Box came with rice, miso, some gorgeous colors, and more sushi that I expected. I tried one of his shrimp. It was good but I wanted sweet shrimp with some wasabi under the shrimp, you know the kind that cleans your nostrils. He enjoyed every bite of his food. He cleaned his plate. He did not talk much, but heard a lot from me. He was kind, and allowed me share and he reflected as best he could. He was trying hard to practice principles of good personhood. And listening to me was a grand way to achieve the feat. He maintained eye-contact, did not use his phone, and shared that he was aiming to do better in life, in general and for that he needed focus to make good decisions. It was a grand sushi meal. My salmon and tempura roll hit the spot, in such a way where I enjoyed every piece with gusto. It looks pretty too. They cared about their presentation. The edamame came too hot to eat. Once it was cool, it was exactly what I needed--- garlic edamame that was not spicy. I have grown to hate spicy as I have grown in years. Two final interesting points. The miso soup did not come with a spoon. The server explained to me that in Japanese culture the miso waas drank from the bowl, like Belle learned to do after seeing the beast. I have been too many sushi spots and I have always received a spoon with my miso. Next time I will try to slurp my miso, and see how that goes. I have done it with other soups and I love it because the flavor nestles in the bottom and then you slurp and get concentrated flavor, like an injection of uncut flavor in the palette. The second interesting point is the concept of kintsugi which basically means that a broken vase can be fixed with gold, and the final product is a broken vase with gold lined cracks. The end result makes it more beautiful. Imagine a flawless beauty, like the Mona Lisa, with some milk foam on top of her lip. The messiness atop her smile is a wink to remind us that human beauty is cut and rebuild, and that journey makes the beautiful glow with meaning, like the wrinkles of worry in a mom when her son breaks her leg. Hopefully Oliver one days become the vase with broken cracks filled with gold, and if he does he sees himself as more beautiful for the journey that took him to that point.
Ok ok. I read the reviews and let's just say, if you can't beat my moms RBF then you ain't it. lol perhaps it's a culture thing, but I found the owners wife straight forward but not rude. Perhaps because I too have a RBF and can relate? Either way it was the best money I could have spent and the sushi was delicious. Service was fast and the salmon exquisite. I also tried the calamari salad which was fried calamari over a bed of lettuce and cabbage with a delicious dressing. Had a Philly roll and salmon roll. Really no complaints here. Will come back!!! Parked on the side street and very clean inside. Restroom also clean.
I was in the area for my dog to get a bath, was looking for somewhere to grab a quick bite, and stumbled across Sushi 21. With a modest exterior (and not too many reviews) I didn't have many expectations, just a good, quick bite. The food was excellent, great quality, had all the flavor! The staff were very kind and gave me their recommendations which were delicious! Also the pricing was totally reasonable!! Now I'm excited for my dog's next bath because I can stop by and get lunch again!

We order their beautiful party trays for all our events for years. Their party tray are stunning. We placed an order today we got our order in styrofoam. We purchased a "party tray" not take out in styrofoam trays! The customers service was crap, made every excuse possible and hung up on us. If you don't have the supplies for a party tray do not accept orders for a party tray!!!! We where responsible to bring the main dish, this isn't Sushi 21 quality. The first picture is from our last order. How can you expect your customers to expect this PARTY TRAY IN A DAMN STYROFOAM CONTAINER. We live down the street from sushi 21 our business will go to Roll Top Sushi from now on. read more

Absolutely love this place that has been a Pedro staple for years. The family that runs it is so friendly and the food is delicious. They've updated their menu with new rolls (tried the Godzilla and the Aloha this time) and they were great. But I can't come here without getting Jose's Roll and a Baked Scallop. read more

Not the best, and almost the worse sushi I've had. Tried this establishment with a carry out order. I've always seen it on the way home, and everywhere else was to be closed by the time I made it there. Late night closings are always a plus for a person on the move, especially at night. Placed my order in through the website, and said it would be no longer than 25 minutes max. Gave them 35, and still had to wait an additional 20 (easily). My order consisted of a Tiger Roll and Rattlesnake Roll, and when it was ready the lady so nicely called my name and just stuck a bag in my hand and walked away; lol whatever. Both rolls looked fresh, Tiger Roll was good, but the eel on the Rattlesnake tasted odd . . . so odd that I knocked it off and went in just for the crab and cucumber. The eel sauce was also pretty disappointing . . . although it had the thick consistency it tasted very watered down! I don't think I will be coming back here because I can find mediocre sushi anywhere. However, I gotta shoot a compliment for the chopsticks that were the already-split kind! We were looking for a place to get some good Sushi and happened upon Sushi 21 in San Pedro. I must say, it was excellent. They have an "All you can eat menu." My husband, I, and a friend did just that, we ordered all we could eat. From the presentation to the service, it was delightful. So don't be a stranger to the restaurant on the corner, stop by and fill up. read more

If I could leave negative 5 stars, I would! Horrible! I ordered the chicken teriyaki rolls and they didn't put any teriyaki on it. And the rolls were all messed up. My mom ordered a veggie roll and hers is a bunch of lettuce. Awful experience! Not worth the $$$. 7/11 has better looking rolls than this. read more

I have driven by this place numerous times! It's been on my mental list of places to try (Pre-Yelp for me). So, yesterday, I finally ate here. Parking is tricky! This place is next to a hotel and the hotel posts signs designating some spaces are specifically for them! Not sure if they'd actually have you towed, but I don't like to take chances. It is pretty quiet here, unlike other Japanese restaurants! There is very little or none of the traditional shouting of greetings and thank you's in Japanese. We were in a hurry when we left, so I don't recall any of the banter when we headed out! We ordered the Tanaka appetizer, which is jalapeno pieces stuffed with crab & spicy tuna and then deep fried. It came out nice and hot! It is very tasty and has a great combination of ingredients! It wasn't spicy, even with the Jalapeno, but that's okay. My husband ordered the Teriyaki Beef Bowl and he liked it. He said it was a little on the sweet side. I got the Tempura & Sushi Bento. When it arrived at the table, we noticed that the tempura wasn't even hot. It might have been sitting at the counter a few minutes...that's about all it takes for it to cool off. It was a disappointment. It tasted like other tempura I've had. The Sushi pieces (3 out of 4) were good. About that 4th piece of sushi, it was Whitefish, which I never get. It was soooo chewy, ewww! Maybe that's how that fish is, but I usually try to swap it out. I didn't try to do that here because it seemed pretty set. The Bento includes a tiny salad & some slaw with a vinaigrette dressing similar to that of Chinese Chicken Salad. I also ordered 2 pieces of Freshwater Eel... I must say that I enjoyed them! The service started out okay. The one lady seemed to have a disgusted demeanor about her when we asked her for a refill of water & extra napkins. We looked at each other and couldn't believe it! Our waitress was okay. I would come back for the AYCE (All You Can Eat) during lunch time, it is a good deal for $20.95. If I can choose the sushi I want, then hopefully, there won't be a problem with getting something I don't care for!! There is a nice variety of rolls offered, sushi and other dishes to eat. So... First time I personally have been here in over a year. What I noticed right off the bat was that they removed all the booths and replaced them with tables and chairs. Way, WAY more seating space now. (We had a relatively large group, 8 in all). We were just slightly hesitant / concerned when we walked in and noticed the makeover, (because of the redeaux), thinking maybe ownership had changed. But my eldest daughter immediately spotted the owner behind the sushi bar, so all our initial concerns were immediately quelled. (That's good thing). Sushi is still good, just as good as I remembered from previous visits. Not necessarily "blow me away" or "the best I've ever had good", but still, pretty fecking good. The wife and I decided to get the Bentos Combo's, which included sushi, (1 piece each of Tuna, Salmon, Snapper & Shrimp), sashimi (2 pieces of Salmon and 2 pieces of Tuna) and teriyaki, (chicken for me, beef for her), just so we could try one another's Teriyaki. They also come with salad, (awesome), and of course Miso soup, (also awesome). The rest of our table's order, (which we all shared), consisted of Octopus rolls, Baked Mussels, Eel rolls, Lobster rolls, (now those bad boys ARE out of this world), Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura and a couple assorted others I can't remember because of the food coma we were all in afterwards. Then we threw in some Hot Sake, Sapporo's, Asahi's and Black Raspberry wine to wash it all down. All that jazz, for 8 peeps, and less than $200.00, (before tip of course). What a bargain!!! If I were to complain, (definitely not enough to drop a star), it would be that the service was a tad slow... And it really wasn't that busy in there. Not the chef's fault either, it's the servers. But, they were courteous and friendly, not like some other reviewers have claimed. Still a favorite, especially since if need be, I could always just roll my fat a$$ down the hill to get there, and right back up to get home!!! read more

One of the best places around LA! I've tried same tasty sushi only on Roll Roll Roll in Korea town and one more place in Manhattan beach! I really enjoyed HIGE Dynamite roll and Special Eall roll. Will definitely be back! Highly recommend! read more

This place is my go-to for sushi. The Jose Roll is hands-down my favorite roll of all time. It hits the spot every time! The AYCE is a staple for them. It looks like they've added some more options in the last few months. If you are a fan of sushi, give it a shot! read more

Unbelievably Phenomenal!!! Fresh, flavorful, scrumptious! Family!!!! I feel beyond blessed to have them in my community. Really, the sushi is always Fresh and so tasty. Ahhhh I sang the entire way throughout my dinner, and lunch the day b4, and dinner the night b4, and lunch b4 that.....I hope you catch my drift. In my photos are the roll I ordered that was rolled like a sloppy burrito that fell apart when you touched it. My lobster roll (longshorette) was basically a Cali roll with burnt lobster and cheese on top that was chewy and rubbery. The hand rolls were WARM (a supposed to be cold item) and no ginger, wasabi, or soy sauce was given. Our order had a thing of teriyaki sauce so maybe they mistook it for soy sauce? The only thing I ended up eating was the cup of white rice and miso soup. Very disappointing. The dogs enjoyed it though because that's where it ended up, in the dog bowls. read more

Don't be fooled by the low star rating: I have HIGH standards for sushi & this place exceeded them. I spoke to the owner regarding the bad reviews & here's a simple explanation: her customers were leaving little to no tip and therefore she had to start charging parties of 6 or more gratuity. Makes sense right? This is a very common practice upheld by many restaurants all over. And as for the customers who were "chased after" for their lack of or little tip, let's all try to remember that no sane person would chase after any customers that left a practical amount of tip. My point: don't be cheap. The servers here have to make a living somehow. Anyways, onto the FOOD: - Tempura +5/5 I'm not a huge fan of fried foods but if I'm going to eat tempura anywhere, it'll be here. There's a a HUGE variety in the order so def don't miss out on this! - Sashimi loveboat +5/5 Wow, this was the deal breaker for me. The sashimi was AMAZINGLY SO fresh! My family and I were so impressed and couldn't stop marveling at it's high quality. Seriously, you NEED to order this! SERVICE: - was great. I expected bad service from the prior reviews I read, but my family and I received great service the entire time. Overall, I don't eat sushi that often but I will definitely be coming here the next time I get any cravings! read more
