My favorite sushi in STL - hands down! I discovered this place after craving sushi and ordering takeout. I never expect much from to-go sushi, especially when it sits in a car for a bit before delivery, but I was shocked by how well-packaged and FRESH everything was! I have since been back for in-person dining and while the atmosphere isn't anything special, the service is excellent and the sushi is always fresh and delicious. PLUS, they have their all-you-can-eat and combo dinner options which are very reasonably priced. I personally can't eat enough sushi to make the all-you-can-eat worth it for me, so I usually go with the combo that includes three rolls and two small appetizers. This restaurant was poppin big time. It was so popular that we knew we had to stop and try it. Just a short 35 minute wait and we were in. We started off with miso soup which may have been the best I've ever had. Followed by crab cakes, pot stickers, and grilled chicken skews. All of which were awesome. The main meal being sushi was great with a wide variety of rolls extremely well prepared. At this point it was a five star experience until we ordered the fried Oreos... We all got an order of the fried Oreos and we were hooked. Hands down the greatest fried Oreos we have ever had. So good that we all ordered another round of them. I sent to Sushi Ai with two of my friends to get all you can eat Sushi. I wasn't that hungry and ended up getting edamame and volcano rolls. Both were good. My friends liked the fact that the all you can eat sushi is buy one get one half priced on Sundays. This is a regular event for them so they both like the place. The food was great, but the service was just ok. It took a long time to put in our orders every time my friends requested new rolls. Perhaps it was just an off night for our server. Most people seemed to be ordering from the all you can eat menu; however, Sarah and I already had our hearts set on some specific rolls that weren't included in that menu. We ordered the Crazy Spicy Crab Roll, Green Dragon and Supersonic Roll (which happened to be Sarah's favorite). All of the rolls had great flavor with a fair amount of kick. One of the best sushi joints I've been to! The all you can eat sushi for $12.99 is a STEAL! I wouldn't be able to find a deal that great where I'm from in California! The service was also phenomenal. The waiter we had was alert and attentive; and the food came out fairly quick. Just know if you don't finish your sushi they charge 50 cents per piece, so don't over order! Have you ever said to yourself, "Holy crap, I could eat a ton of sushi right now but I am a broke boi/gal that doesn't have enough money for multiple plates"? If so, the solution has come. Sushi Ai's $19.99 all-you-can-eat extravaganza. Sushi Ai is a nice, quaint Japanese restaurant in the heart of downtown Clayton that is known for it's all-you-can-eat sushi deals for lunch and dinner (though it is still a good restaurant to sit down and order). The deals run at around $14 for lunch and $20 for dinner. The restaurant is (usually) clean and is accented by dim lighting and shades to resemble a typical, modern, Japanese restaurant. *NOTE - They charge you for whatever you ordered and didn't eat/manage to finish* On our visit, the service was excruciatingly slow. The waiter took their time to deliver drinks and take our orders (5 minutes each). This was the main reason that Sushi Ai didn't receive a 5 star rating as we opted for the all-you-can-eat option (and that was mainly collecting our sheets that we ticked off). However, when the food did come, though, HOO-WEE it was good! The $19.99 all-you-can-eat dinner allows you to select from a HUGE variety of appetizers, nigiri, standard rolls and some specialty rolls. For my first course, I ordered the spicy tuna roll, black and white roll (eel roll), salmon, white tuna, and eel nigiri, and lastly, the volcano roll. The sushi fish was tasty and fresh for most rolls/nigiri and each specialty roll was accented by an array of different sauces (volcano - Spicy mayo/sriracha; black and white - unagi sauce). I was surprised as most all-you-can-eat's give you lower grade fish to maintain costs. The only fish that did not taste that great was the tuna (and maybe there was something off that day). I then opted for some gyoza, the spider roll, yellowtail nigiri, and a traditional salmon roll. Again, everything tasted great, had good proportion of fish/rice, and was plated well. I was pleasantly surprised with my experience at Sushi Ai, which is located in a great area of Clayton. When I walked in, the place was about 30% full and by the time I left, there wasn't an empty table in the place -- now I know why. They have a full menu and an all you can eat option too. Being a sushi lover for over 20 years, I've never tried AYCE, but I was feeling it might be worth a try (after I saw several others with great looking food in their tables). The sushi options were great on the AYCE menu and everything I tried was prepared well and tasted fresh. I tried several nigiri options and two rolls -- everything was excellent. I would have happily paid full price off the regular menu, that's how good the quality was. I read a few reviews where they pointed out sub-par service. That was not my experience. Everyone was friendly, the service was prompt and noteworthy. Mara, my server, came to my table multiple times and timed everything well. I was skeptical due to my experience at the other store but willing to give it a try. I looked at the menu online to place my Togo order. Took about 15min for my three rolls. While I was waiting I checked out the yelp page. The prices on this yelp page do not match the company web page. I was even more surprised when I got my check and the price was yet another amount! As for the food I was blown away surprised. It was wonderful. Rolls were full of flavor and fish and the crab salad that came with it was fantastic. At first glance I wasn't sure if I was going to like this place. I went to the location downtown first and just wasn't a fan of how it looked on the outside. Of course you should never judge a book by its cover and I'm glad I went in. I really love this place and come here anytime I had a sushi craving I need to satisfy. We came in for an all you can eat dinner for $19.99 per person. It was around 4:00pm on a Tuesday evening and the restaurant was free of customer expect us. Food was pretty good as the fish/sea food was fresh. The restaurant was clean although the smoke from the smoke shop got suck in where we are at every time the door was opened /closed. Service was slow at first and has become more attentive after a new server took over the care of our taAll went pretty well until we found a piece of glove (the blue object in pic) in a slice of the sushi roll we ordered and was not offered an apology or any form of compensation. I think I finally found my sushi fix! I was impressed by the sushi, considering that Missouri is a land-locked state. It was still not as good as sushi you'd find on a coastal state, but it's not really fair to compare it to those locations. All thinks considered, this is a great place to go for a sushi buffet. My experience at this Clayton location was a hundred times better than at the Downtown/Olive Street location. The only downside is that the atmosphere was extremely loud. We came on a Saturday night which is a very busy time. Despite the chaos, waiters were very organized and attentive to whenever we needed anything or to when we were ready to place another order. I love how the only catch was that you have to pay for leftovers! No time limit, no limit on nigiri, and fast service! We got our orders within 10 mins after placing them it seemed like. It was fast paced, allowing us to efficiently stuff our faces with sushi. The more people you have the better because you can try more things that way! The salmon nigiri wasn't as good as what I'm used to, but the squid nigiri was yummy. The Crazy spicy crab roll and Boston roll were so good that we reordered them on our second round. I wasn't sure if this place was even open since there were no pictures or even a phone number listed on Yelp. Since our hotel was near by I thought we'd just drive by and see... Turns out it's open and it's a great little spot! We had the AYCE lunch. Not an extensive menu of items (compared to some other AYCE places), but the quality was on point. Smooth pieces of tuna and salmon, just the right amount of rice in their rolls, tasty spicy tuna (I know that's usually a simple item, but theirs was really good!), dumplings were crispy, shumai was fresh, and every roll we had had awesome flavor and fresh fish inside. We waited as everyone ahead of us went in and wondered after 35 when we'd be up as I have to work tonight. I've long been used to playing the All You Can Eat game. You get less fish, more rice, but you still walk away feeling satisfied. Today boundaries were crossed. Sadness was generated. I ordered my first of two plates and it took thirty minutes to arrive. So I handed over my second form, figuring it would take a while for more food to arrive. In this case it took less than five. No big deal. Service wasn't awful either so the place gets a 3. But what that gave me the opportunity to notice was just how much rice had been added to the second batch of nigiri. These pieces were loaded up with so much rice that it was almost impossible, and somewhat uncomfortable, to eat in a bite. I removed some rice from each piece to make doing so possible again, and waited to see if they'd implement their per-piece charge for leaving food behind, which they didn't. So, yeah. We decided to try out this place for my birthday and it was a nice surprise. We shared the spider roll, California roll and the honey cream cheese and crab roll. They were all yummy. I decided to try a scallop sushi and it was also delicious. We opted not to do the $19.99 for all you can eat as those items filled us up. I did take advantage of the buy one get one free beer and enjoyed a couple Sopporos for the birthday. The nice surprise was when they found out it was my birthday (thanks to my girlfriend). They brought out the fried cheesecake. And I have to say I would never order that in a million years but it was incredibly decadent. Great service and good food. Just came here with my two buds. I just did the yakitori and salmon sashimi appetizer, which were filling by themselves (for my small stomach). The yakitori was all right, the chicken's better with the sauce. The salmon was nice, the wasabi mixed in with the sauce has a nice little punch. I saw the Hokkaido crepes and was curious, so I gave the green tea a try. Totally worth it. A subtle flavor that waits until the end to hit you, and a gentle chill from the ice cream inside. The all-you-can-eat sushi is a must try for anyone in the area. The appetizers are great and sushi is pretty good quality. It's much better than anything I've had at a grocery store (include the Whole foods, and trader joes sushi), but noticeably lower quality than the sushi restaurants on Delmar and CWE. You must finish what you order, and the rolls vary in size. I've had a variety of wait staff, each one significantly different from the other. Some staff are friendly and really make sure that you are taken care of, I've also had a couple waiters who seem jaded and walk away before making sure that there is nothing else we needed. The beer is buy one get one free. The better waiters will let you know that, a certain jaded waiter did not mention that the first time I was there when I only ordered one beer. I've eaten at this place several times over the last 6+ years. Food is always prepared well, that I can see. Service on the patio is extremely lacking, to the point where I've had to get up & ask for water refills, the check, etc. The most recent time for dinner today (6/17/2019) a witnessed Zoey (whom I asked for her name after the fact), remove cloth napkins from a table that had just had 9 people at & stick chop sticks back in them as if they hadn't been used or touched. That is NOT sanitary. I then asked her if she was putting them out on the clean table for future patrons to use & she removed them quickly & walked to the back to talk to another server with a look on her face as if she had been caught in the act. I had high hopes for Sushi Ai and they were exceeded during the Sunday All-you-can-Eat lunch my family and I enjoyed. For appetizers we ordered miso soup, gyoza, and tempura fried vegetables, all very tasty. Then, we ordered perhaps one of everything on the menu. We could not have picked a bad maki if we tried! And, while the nigiri I ordered was not bite sized like I would have preferred but was instead gigantic, nothing of the flavor was missing. After our dessert of tempura fried OREOS (whaaaat?) It seemed the staff were more preoccupied with gossiping and talking to one another. A little annoying but it was dead after all. I ordered miso soup, a salmon hand roll and their spicy crap sushi roll. The miso was REALLY salty but still good. The quality of salmon was really good but not the highest of quality. The spicy roll was really good and spicy! Overall, I just wanted some sushi and while the food was good, it wasn't anything special.
